Welcome to The Art of Magic! We are happy you’ve joined us for a fun-filled evening of art, good food, and music. Most importantly, you are helping the Morgan Arts Council (MAC) continue our mission of Getting Art Out There.

Art & Elegance is MAC’s most important fundraiser of the year and contrib-utes substantially to our ability to maintain the Ice House as a community center and home for artists to display and sell their works, musicians and actors to perform, movement instructors to lead classes in dance and fitness, the Digital Media Center to create and broadcast community interest pro-grams, and to teach children and adults art in its many forms. All of these ex-periences serve to enrich the lives and well-being of Morgan County citizens and attract thousands of visitors to Berkeley Springs each year.

Outside the Ice House doors, MAC remains vital in bringing events and programs at little or no cost to families and individuals. The Arts Integration Program Partnership, which brings art into Morgan County Schools, and the Summer Concert in the Park Series are leading examples of how we educate, entertain, and inspire everywhere we can.

This evening is a collaboration of the MAC family of artists and volunteers in support of our many programs by recognizing their contribution to communi-ty and economic development.

My work involves both the camera and the forge. For me, photography and metal exist in the same realm. I see the world both through my lens and the fire of the forge, a combined exploration that drives my artistic vision. Before the digital age, photography involved silver in the film and prints. For me, working with met-al sculpture is just a much larger extension of that connection to the elements.

I come from a centuries long line of metal artists and blacksmiths dating back to 1738 when my ancestors came over from Germany. When I was a child, my father gave me my first camera and darkroom. Since then, I find that capturing images with my camera allows me to see the world in such a way that I can create those images in other media as well. Decades of professional experience in both photography and metal allow me to capture the vision of a client, the feeling of a sunset, and the scope of my own emotions .

Award winning metal and photography can be found at many galleries in the Mid-Atlantic region as well as the sculpture garden at our mountain studio & gallery at Frog Valley in Berkeley Springs, WV. My photography also appears in exceptional architectural and interior design publications. My commissioned work is found throughout the DC-Baltimore region and up and down the east coast.

Delving into new artistic challenges on land & water dovetails with my lifelong love of photography, sculpture and art as a whole. Combine that with my passion for architecture & travel and I have what fuels my creative drive.

A native of Elkridge, MD, Mary learned to sew from her mother and continued in high school home economics classes. She started to learn quilting in her 20s and later moved to Morgan County in 2007 where she joined the Delectable Mountains Quilt Guild. She has been very active in the Guild, serving in various leadership positions and for the last four years has been commissioned to make the Apple Butter Quilt. Coming from a military family and as the mother of a Navy veteran, she is an ac-tive member of the Quilts of Valor organization’s local group, Mountain Mommas. She has made and donated 23 quilts for local veterans. The king size quilt donated to Arts and Elegance is entitled “Memories of My Quilts”. Its inspiration came from 17 years of designing quilts and loving fabric. “The way fabrics play together is magical to me, says Mary, “and I have been told I have an eye for color.” We agree.

Tara Fly has always seen “cat people”. As a child, she was convinced that she was a cat in human form, and she knew immediately when she picked up a paint-brush that her subjects would be cats.

She moved from Bowie, MD, to Berkeley Springs with her family in 1994, and attended Berkeley Springs High School (Class of ‘98). She focused on performing arts in school, and has no formal fine-art education, aside from one freshman art class taught by Morgan County artist, Mary Anne Haines.

Tara took up painting in 2009, at the age of 29. She works in acrylics on canvas and wood panels, using a multi-layered technique similar to oil painting.

Tara has participated in curated shows in Seattle, WA; Costa de Caparica, Portugal; and Aberdeen, Scotland; attracting collectors from around the world. Her artwork has been published in Catster/Cat Fancy magazine, and also used in fantasy art Tarot decks. She self-published five calendars (2014-2018) using Kickstarter, and was interviewed by Hagerstown Business Magazine in 2015.

Her home-based studio in Funkstown, Maryland is closed to the public, however she participates in art festivals throughout the year, including the Apple But-ter Festival in Berkeley Springs. Her artwork can also be found at Give Purrs A Chance cat adoption center.

Michael Cantori spent his formative years in both our nation’s capital and in Europe, with an exorbitant amount of time sequestered in his father’s subter-ranean workshop, “Dunninger’s Encyclopedia of Magic” in hand. He went on to receive a degree in engineering, while excelling in the martial arts as both a competitor and instructor. He quickly gave up a traditional career path for the art of mystification and prestidigitation while concurrently managing numerous small businesses within the arts, as well as teaching self-defense for various institutions.

In addition to being a full-time performer, Cantori has taught graduate level classes in magic and awareness at the University of Maryland, has read the fortunes of congressmen, senators, and rock stars, and finds the time to de-sign & craft magical apparatus, which he has supplied to some of the finest illusionists in the world.

He continually challenges himself within the magical arts, ever searching for the best routines, insights, and mysteries to share with his audience. Thus, he is an avid historian, author and scholar of theatrical magic, science, health, and mysticism, extending great homage to past masters such as Alexander Herrmann, Karl Germain, Nate Leipzig, Anna Eva Fay, Alexander (the man who knows), Nicola Tesla, and ... well, the list is quite grand.

Yvonne Salcedo Williams, a native of Bogota, Columbia, moved to the United States at the age of 10. She received the highest caliber of ballet training under direction of Marie Hale of Ballet Florida. In addition, she has studied and worked with world-renowned choreogra-phers. Yvonne danced professionally with Pittsburgh Bal-

let Theater for four years and thereafter in many countries worldwide.

In 1992, she founded Arts Triumphant Dance Theater in Jacksonville Florida and then brought this school of ballet to Berkeley Springs, her husband’s hometown. Yvonne is dedicated to teaching, training and mentoring young people. Many graduate to join dance companies and Broadway productions as well as to become ballet teachers and choreographers across the country. Most importantly Yvonne instills her students with love, joy and commitment to excellence that will make them soar at whatever they may do in life.

For much of her musical career Mary Hott has played a supporting role, helping other musicians realize their own musical goals. While living in New York City and lat-er in Boston, she was a sought-after recording studio session singer and background singer, largely due to her ability to quickly learn a vocal passage and get it right on the first try. Her musical interests turned to the blues, and she was soon fronting several bands, including a ten-piece R&B Soul ensemble with regular appearances at The House of Blues and festivals and nightclubs throughout New England. She has shared the stage with nationally known musical acts as diverse as The J. Geils Band and Asleep At The Wheel. Mary’s own original music reflects that diversity of musical interests, with elements of blues, funk, soul, rock, jazz and traditional country blended into her songwriting. Mary Hott’s debut album “Shaman Lover” showcases her songwriting talent and musical diversity in collaboration with the arranging and performance mastery of guitarist Billy Thompson.
