We’re an Honor Band at a Blue Ribbon School, and the musical instruction our kids enjoy is extraordinary. All band students participate in one of our three concert bands (Symphonic Winds, Wind Ensemble, or Concert Band). We’ve got an award- winning marching band, two jazz bands, and a fantastic winter guard program. The band program consists of two high school concert bands, jazz bands, percussion ensemble, an indoor drumline, an indoor color guard, and a marching band. The band program has been named a Virginia Honor Band for the 2006-2007, 2007-2008, 2008-2009, 2009-2010, 2010-2011, 2011- 2012, and 2012-2013 school years after obtaining superior ratings in both its Symphonic Band and Marching Band programs, during state and district assessments. Metropolitan Area. Originally composed of five music majors from Howard University trying to raise money for tuition during the Christmas season, they have now grown to a 8-piece ensemble consisting of brass, a rhythm section, and vocalists. Gaining popularity from playing at local Metro stations, DuPont Brass started out professionally playing for weddings, banquets, and other private events in the surrounding area. Thanks to the foundation laid in their earlier years, DuPont Brass has had the opportunity to perform in conjunction with the D.C. Jazz Festival and on the prestigious Kennedy Center Millennium Stage. Consistently touching the hearts of the community with their heartwarming testimony, DuPont Brass has been featured on WPFW's “Live at Five” three times and featured in the Washington Post Newspaper five times. Through their training in both classical and contemporary styles, the young group has developed a sound that mixes varied genres of music, including jazz, hip-hop, and R&B. Their latest release entitled Eclectic Soul is a testament to that sound. The United States Navy - Sea Chanters (Chorale) The Navy Band Sea Chanters is the United States Navy’s official chorus. The ensemble performs a variety of music ranging from traditional choral music, including sea chanteys and patriotic fare, to opera, Broadway, and contemporary music. Under the leadership of Senior Chief Musician Adam Tyler, the Sea Chanters perform for the public throughout the United States. At home in Washington, they perform for the president, vice president and numerous congressional, military and foreign dignitaries. In 1956, Lt. Harold Fultz, then the band’s assistant leader, organized a group from the Navy School of Music to sing chanteys and patriotic songs for the State of the Nation dinner. 6/19/2019 Phil Wiggins & Rick Franklin (Piedmont Blues) Harmonica player, songwriter and music director Phil Wiggins is regularly ranked in the Living Blues Readers and Critic’s Polls as one of the top harmonica players in the traditional blues. Today Phil is the only living player of the instrument to hold the prestigious honor commonly referred to as “Living Cultural Treasure.” Phil is accompanied by the Piedmont guitar picker and vocalist, Rick Franklin, a swift practitioner who carries on the D.C. acoustic blues tradition and has been a part of the D.C. blues scene for a long time. 6/20/2019 Moonshine Society (R&B) Moonshine Society delivers high energy roots rock, blues, and old school R&B in a style guaranteed to keep audiences dancing, toes tapping, and the drinks flowing. 6/21/2019 Russkie Musikanti (Russian) The Russkie Musikanti is an ensemble of the Washington Balalaika Society, the largest Russian folk orchestra in the United States. The ensemble wears traditional Russian costumes and performs on authentic Russian folk instruments bringing the music of Russia and Eastern Europe to the broader community. A typical music program includes a sampling of different styles of Russian and Eastern European music, including some music that was especially composed for these folk instruments. There are happy songs and sad songs, songs to dance to and songs to listen to – music that reflects the vastness of Russia and Eastern Europe and the diversity of their people. Patsy’s Honky Tonk Torch & Twang, performs classic country and honky tonk music in the Baltimore/Washington area. 6/28/2019 Empty Bottle String Band (Old-time, String Band) The Empty Bottle String Band originally formed to play a one-time stint at a local farmers market, but it has already reached new heights in popularity all over the Southeast U.S. The band specializes in playing toe-tapping, highly danceable traditional Appalachian music and is known for its upbeat fiddle tunes and feel-good music. The band’s impressive stage presence is coupled with a delightfully self-effacing strength and confidence in its music. 6/30/2019 Padmarani Rasiah Cantu (Indian Classical Dance) Bharatha Natyam, an ancient classical dance form of India is acknowledged as one of the world's oldest art forms. The dance showcases Indian mythology through theatrical entertainment. A traditional repertoire commences with an introduction, special movements of the limbs, and intricate rhythmic footwork. It then blossoms into storytelling through hand gestures and facial expressions and concludes with a brilliant exposition of pure rhythm. Together they ignite an audience with their love for music, combined with a magnetic passion and enthusiasm. Add to the mix their talented rhythm section, Patty Dougherty (drums) & Greg Hardin (bass), and this band will undoubtedly get you rockin’ & a-rollin’ through the night. The 19th Street Band has had the honor of sharing the stage with country music stars such as Rodney Atkins, Craig Morgan, and Chuck Mead. They have opened for The Wheeler Brothers and Spirit Family Reunion at The Hamilton as well as Grammy Award-winning Western Swing icons, Asleep at the Wheel, at The Birchmere. 7/17/2019 Blue Sky Puppet Theater (Puppets) The Jester's Box ia one of the Blue Sky Puppet Theatre's most charming and unusual show! The jester, Ralph, is off to see King NFAFETMHL, the king who Never Found Anything Funny Enough To Make Him Laugh. If Ralph can make him laugh, he will gain fame and gold. But, if he fails, he must endure a jester's greatest humiliation - getting hit with a pie! He makes camp outside the King's castle. After rehearsing his magic act, walking on a tightrope, and dancing on hot coals, Ralph lays down to take a nap before performing for the King. As Ralph sleeps, one of his rag dolls, "Freddie", comes to life. King NFAFETMHL shows up! Freddie proceeds to go through a series of hilarious tricks, making King NFAFETMHL roar with laughter in doing so!! This "Table Top" performance is a major stylistic departure from the rod puppets behind a 6ft curtain that we're famous for. This 35 minute presentation is an intimate show that is performed Bunraku style on a custom built table with the performer visible. It accommodates 150 amazed and delighted viewers of all ages. 7/17/2019 City of Fairfax - Main Street Community Band (Concert Band) The City of Fairfax Band Association, Inc. added its newest ensemble, the "Main Street Community Band" (MSCB), in February of 2009. This band is led by Geoffrey K. Seffens, long-time Lanier Intermediate School band director and former director of the Vienna Concert Band. Their repertoire ranges from Baroque to Beatles including works by Gabrieli, Stephen Foster, Holst, as well as some arrangements by members of the group. 7/18/2019 Maybe April (Country) Maybe April is a Country Americana trio made up of Kristen Castro, Katy DuBois (Bishop), and Alaina Stacey. Hailing from Simi Valley, CA, Jonesboro, AR, and Chicago, IL, the three met in the summer of 2012 at a music industry camp in Nashville, TN. They wrote a song that would later take them to Los Angeles to play at a GRAMMY week event, along with Bonnie Raitt, Kris Kristofferson, Allen Shamblin, Gavin DeGraw, J.D. Souther, Joy Williams from the Civil Wars, and many others. Since then, amongst hundreds of shows, the girls have opened for Brandy Clark and Sarah Jarosz, played Pilgrimage Music Festival and IBMA's Wide Open Bluegrass Festival, and had their video "Last Time" premiered on CMT. Maybe April is recognized for their three-part harmonies, strength as instrumentalists, original songs, and shared roles as frontwomen, each adding something different from their musical backgrounds to create a unique sound somewhere in between Americana and Country. 7/27/2019 The British Invasion Years (60s, British Invasion Rock) More than just the Beatles, this nostalgic musical tribute spans the entire 60s British Invasion era with music from BOTH sides of the Atlantic, and is three acts in one: The first act includes songs by iconic British groups such as The Zombies, Dave Clark Five, The Rolling Stones, The Hollies, Herman's Hermits, Gerry and the Pacemakers, Manfred Mann and many others. As bassist/vocalist Bobby M notes, “We’ve always had a large fan base because of the wide variety of music and nostalgic aspect of our show. Cheryl Wheeler has to be seen to be appreciated. Nothing you read and nothing you hear from her albums prepares you for how good a performer she is. Chery's songs have been covered by artists as diverse as Dan Seals, Peter Paul and Mary, Kenny Loggins, Garth Brooks, Suzy Boggus, Melanie, Bette Midler, Maura O'Connell, Sylvia, Kathy Mattea, and Holly Near. If they think she is great, then you owe it to yourself to learn more if you aren't familiar with her. She is a gifted songwriter with a beautiful voice. From other people's comments about her you can learn that she is a natural story teller with a fantastic sense of humor. At an early age, Frankie Addison demonstrated his commitment to excellence in music while at Terrell Jr. High then later at Shaw Jr. High School, as he performed and traveled with the marching band, jazz ensemble, and concert band. However, it was at the Duke Ellington School for the Performing Arts where he released his creative talents as a musician, and classical and jazz saxophonist. Frankie formed his own jazz group, "Front Line Jazz Ensemble”, at the age of 17. 8/16/2019 Wayne Henderson and Helen White (Traditional Appalachian) Wayne Henderson is a National Heritage Award recipient honored for his craftsmanship as a luthier and his renowned finger-style Appalachian guitar playing. His instruments are coveted worldwide and he sports a long waiting list for his guitars, mandolins, and banjos. Wayne's lightening fast, articulate playing style was influenced by Doc Watson and EC Ball. His repertoire includes Appalachian fiddle tunes, Carter Family melodies and a few swing and rockabilly standards. He has won more awards at the Galax Fiddlers Convention than any other competitor in its ‘seventy-seven’ year history. Helen White is a singer, fiddler, guitarist and tunesmith. Helen has toured extensively with Wayne in the U.S. and Europe. Her compositions include works for theater and video projects as well as a Booklist honored recording of original songs for children. 8/21/2019 Junkyard Band (Go-Go, Funk) The Junk Yard Band is a go-go band, founded in the early 1980s by children playing on improvised instruments. The band was formed in 1980 by children, ranging in age from 8 to 13, living in the Barry Farm government housing project in Washington, D.C. With go-go music gaining in popularity, and the band gaining local notoriety, the band began booking performances at schools, recreation centers, fundraisers, and government agencies. They have toured extensively playing in well know venues such as Capital Center, Richmond Coliseum, John F. Kennedy Center and the Apollo Theater in New York City with LL Cool J. The band had eventually made enough money to purchase real equipment and made the change. These guys and a girl grew up in and around Washington, D.C. The scene was small and all the Punks, Skins, and Mods intermixed in those days. Gary Davis, Pink Anderson and Robert Lockwood? And toured with Arthur Big Boy Crudup, Hot Tuna, JJ Cale & Bonnie Raitt ? Roy can. He has the stories, the licks, and the mystery of timeless music in his fingers. He’s been featured on a PBS special and interviewed by Terry Gross on “Fresh Air.” He’s also a regular at Fur Peace Ranch, where he teaches along with Jorma Kaukonen. When he brings his 'Tour Bus' to town, a one-man blues-fest ensues. He plays and he entertains, feeding us music and stories, and the evening is a celebration for us all.
