AUGUST RECESS

Advocacy Tips: At Home Meeting with your Legislator

While NAHC often meets with U.S. Representatives and U.S. Senators

in Washington D.C., nothing makes a greater impact on a lawmaker

than hearing from his or her own constituents. Elected officials want

to hear directly from their voters.

You, your staff, patients and families, are uniquely qualified to be the

best advocates for the home health care and hospice communities.

Change is achieved through strength and unity of voice, and together

we can make an extraordinary impact.

WE URGE YOU TO:

1. Contact your local representatives’ office and set up a time to meet with them in-person, in “your own backyard” while they are home for August Recess.

FIND YOUR ELECTED OFFICIALS HERE

U.S. Senators | U.S. Representatives

2. Prepare in advance for your meeting:

• Print out the Fact Sheets associated with our key legislative issues.

– NAHC S.433 FactSheet

– NPP FactSheet (Revised 04-10-19)

• Familiarize yourself with the topics and facts.

• Check to see if your elected official is already a supporter/co-sponsor of the legislation OR has yet to commit.

• If you decide to go to your meeting as a group, decide who will be your main spokesperson in advance and who will be a note taker (in the event there is follow-up later).

• Remember! You are already an expert, the preparation you do ahead of time is an added bonus.

3. Meeting Day Logistics and Best Practices:

• Bring with you copies of the Fact Sheets, Business Cards, and any other materials you think would be relevant to leave behind or have as references for your legislator.

You are first-hand experts on

the issues and opportunities

affecting home care and

hospice services today, and

your representatives need to

hear from you.

• Arrive early — being prompt and courteous is always appreciated.

• Remember, you are an ambassador for the home health care and hospice communities- conduct yourself as one (be polite, and a good listener, and gracious).

• Try not to be disappointed if you meet with one of their staff members. Legislators are busy people even when they are at home. Their staff is there to listen and share what you have to say directly with the legislator. They can be profound advocates on your behalf.

• Your or your spokesperson should:

– Introduce everyone

– Be clear about the purpose of your visit

– Speak slowly and clearly throughout

– Review the key facts and information related to the legislation

– Clearly explain your ask- please support the legislation/OR Thank them for their support

– Allow for questions

• Make time to learn something about them, and what they care about to help build a rapport and create the backbone of a future long-term relationship.

• If possible, invite the legislator on a home visit with one of the families as part of their constituency.

• Ask them to take a photo with you to commemorate the meeting/event (elected officials love photo ops, and you can post it later via social media or send a copy to them in your following up activities)

• Before you leave, thank them for their time and let them know you will be following-up and you look forward to building a relationship with them.

4. After your meeting:

• Send a follow-up thank you note or email to your legislator/or their staff reiterating the main issues and your ask.

• In the coming months, be sure to check in periodically with your legislator. Building on-going relationships with them can be instrumental in garnering their support for current as well as future issues.

• Let at NAHC know how it went! Email us at [email protected] and let us know how your meeting went and if we can assist in any way.

AUGUST RECESS

Writing a Letter to the EditorDuring the congressional recess this year, NAHC is encouraging advocates for the home health care and hospice communities to write a letter to the editor of your local news publications in support of the Home Health Payment Innovation Act S. 433/ H.R. 2573 and the Home Care Planning and Improvement Act S. 296/ H.R.2150.

These two important pieces of legislation, if passed, will help ensure that all Americans can continue to access quality home health care and hospice services when they need them.

What is a Letter to the Editor?

When you feel strongly about an issue or a piece of legislation and you want to influence people to take action, you often need to reach a larger audience than your close circle of influence. Writing a short and concise letter to your local newspaper or other regularly published community newsletter can be an excellent vehicle to get the word out and generate additional support for your cause. Letters to the editor are often the most widely read pieces in newspapers or magazines and can be extremely powerful.

How you can help?

We need you to help get the word out and to help generate support for this legislation. Writing a letter to the editor is one way to expand our advocacy efforts and NAHC has made it as easy as 1, 2, 3 to participate and make a huge impact.

Step 1:

Head to the internet and research your local newspaper or other publication specially looking for where to send a letter to the editor or other comments.

Step 2:

Once you find the name of the person and their contact information, choose one of the templates below and address the letter to the either via snail mail or email.

Make sure you fill in your name and other relevant information within the template.

*Note, feel free to write your own letter if you have the time or interest. Creativity and originality are encouraged. You can use our templates as a guide.

Step 3:

Send it on out with a lick of a stamp or quick click of your keyboard. And, feel free to cc [email protected] if its digital on the correspondence.

Social Media GuideThe majority of U.S. Representatives and Senators are avid and enthusiastic users of social media platforms, including Facebook and Twitter. Many of them manage their own accounts and respond personally to messages. These platforms help them understand what you, their constituents, care about and give them candid insight into the world around them.

We encourage you to stretch your social media muscles and engage with your Representatives and Senators this summer using this easy how to guide.

Step 1:

Find and Follow your U.S. Representative and Senators:

BEST PRACTICES:

Social media can be a powerful influencer for positive change, but it also can have pitfalls.

If you are going to use social media to advocate, make sure you are careful about what you are posting:

• Before posting a photo, ask yourself if this is “work appropriate?” Or, “Would this be something I want the whole world to see?

• Stay away from any abusive or foul language. Remember you are an ambassador for the home health care and hospice industry whether in person or online, and we want to put our best foot forward.

• Keep your message positive. If a legislator attends an event or supports a bill, thank them on social media and include a picture if one is available.

• Most importantly, be creative and post often. Social media is powerful but is only as good as the amount of noise it makes. The more often you post, the better. And, don’t forget to let your personal passion shine through.
