Consider the students you teach and the colleagues you work with. What can you do to better communicate with them? One of the most effective means of communicating with others who come from diverse socio-economic, cultural and linguistic backgrounds, is to learn about those diverse backgrounds. Just knowing the vocabulary that pertains to a minority religion, and understanding the importance of certain holidays, for example, can go a long way in letting others know that you care about them as individuals. When students know you care enough to learn about them as individuals, they are more willing to invest extra effort into their classwork. Check the Schoology site for more info.

The multiple dimensions of Hispanic identity reflect the long colonial history of Latin America, during which mixing occurred among indigenous Americans, white Europeans, and enslaved people from Africa and Asia. Although Latin American countries and the U.S. have parallel histories of slavery and colonialism, about 15 times as many African slaves were brought to the Spanish and Portuguese colonies than to the U.S. Today, people of African
