Coaching StaffField Manager, Greg Tagert Year-By-Year Managerial Record *= League Champs

Pitching Coach, Alain Quijano Alain Quijano returns to the Gary SouthShore RailCats in 2019 for his fifth straight season as the team’s pitching coach. The RailCats pitching staff in 2018 finished with the second-best ERA (3.65), issued the fewest number of walks (227) and intentional walks (two), committed the fewest number of balks (one) and finished with the most complete games (seven) and complete game shutouts (three).

Since being named the team’s pitching coach in 2015, Quijano has had five players have their contracts purchased by Major League Affiliates — RHP Matt Solter, 2016 (San Fran-cisco Giants); LHP Alex Gunn, 2016 (Arizona Diamondbacks); RHP Christian Herstine, 2016 (New York Yankees); RHP Karl Triana, 2016 (Baltimore Orioles); LHP Carlos Diaz, 2017 (Miami Marlins).

Quijano played nine seasons of Independent Professional Baseball, including three with Gary (2009, 2011, 2013). Quijano’s best season with the RailCats was on the 2013 Cham-pionship Team, in which the southpaw won a career-high and RailCats single-season-high-tying 12 games. Quijano finished the season 12-7 with a 4.05 ERA in 21 starts, striking out 82 batters in 133.1 innings. Quijano concluded his professional baseball career in 2014 with the York Revolution of the Atlantic League, posting a 10-10 record with a 4.59 ERA in a career-high 28 starts and 168.2 innings pitched.

During the college baseball season, Quijano serves as the pitching coach at South Suburban College in South Holland, Ill. Prior to being named the pitching coach at SSC in 2019, Quijano began his coaching career as a graduate assistant coach at his alma mater Grand View College from 2005-06, before returning as an assistant coach from 2009-2010. Qui-jano was then the pitching coach at Iowa Wesleyan College in 2011, before serving as the pitching coaching and recruiting coordinator at Moraine Valley Community College from 2012-13. Quijano was then the pitching coach at Olive-Harvey College from 2015-16, before being promoted to head coach in 2017.

Quijano resides in Oak Lawn, Ill., with his wife, Rebecca, and their two children (daughter, Maryanna; son, Maximus).

Third Base Coach, Doug CoeDoug Coe joins the Gary SouthShore RailCats for his first season in 2019 as the team’s third base coach. Coe will also work with the catchers on an every day basis.

Coe played two seasons of Independent Professional Baseball as a catcher for the Windy City Thunderbolts of the Frontier League from 2008-2009. In his first season of profes-sional baseball in 2008, Coe slashed .227/.402/.394/.796 with two home runs and 13 RBIs in 24 games. Coe concluded his pro playing career in 2000, slashing .171/.271/.244/.515 with three doubles and five RBIs in 15 games.

Prior to his pro career, Coe played collegiately at Lawrence University and at the UW—Stevens Point from 2004-2008. Coe was a two-time All-Midwest Conference selection at Lawrence from 2004-2005 before transferring to UW—Stevens Point in 2006. As a junior in 2006, Coe played in a school record 53 games and was named All-WIAC Honorable Mention and Second Team All-Midwest Region after finishing second in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) with 13 home runs and 117 total. Behind the plate, Coe threw out 57% (13/23) of baserunners in 51 starts.

Coe batted .481 with one home run and seven RBIs in seven games as a senior in 2007 before suffering a season-ending knee injury. Coe received a medical redshirt in 2008 and was given a fifth year of eligibility. As a redshirt-senior in 2008, Coe was named the WIAC Position Player of the Year, First Team All-Region, Second Team D3Baseball.com All-American and First Team ABCA All-American after .438/.542/.810/1.352 with 67 hits, 27 extra-base hits, 15 home runs, 59 RBIs, 124 total bases and a .994 fielding percentage.

Coe was inducted into the UW—Stevens Point Athletics Hall of Fame in 2018, becoming one of 19 baseball alumni to be recognized. During the college baseball season, Coe works as an assistant coach at his alma mater, UW—Stevens Point. Tagert has won three league championships (2005, 2007, 2013) and has finished with a .500 winning percentage or better record in every season except one since being named the team’s manager in 2005.

The RailCats qualified for the American Association playoffs for the second straight season in 2018 after claiming the North Division Title on the final day of the regular season. Gary also finished with a single-season franchise record 59 regular-season wins in 2018. The Railcats regular-season Division Title and back-to-back playoff appearanc-es were also firsts for Gary since merging from the now defunct Northern league to the American Association in 2011.

Tagert’s most recent player to have his contract purchased by an MLB affiliate was shortstop Ryan Fitzgerald, who had his contract purchased by the Boston Red Sox on May 3, 2018.

Tagert has developed three Northern League Pitchers of the Year, two League Rookie of the Year winners, a Northern League Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, five Baseball America All-Independent League selections, eight full-season Northern League All-Stars and two full-season American Association All-Stars.
