What is a FCPS Green School?
A FCPS Green School reduces environmental impact of buildings & grounds, has a positive effect on student and teacher health, and increases environmental and sustainability literacy among students and graduates through inquiry-based, student-driven initiatives.
To that end, Fayette Co Public Schools Sustainability Team believes that all students deserve the opportunity to be educated in healthy, sustainable, efficient environments conducive to learning. To serve the holistic learner, our comprehensive, inclusive approach to sustainability focuses on the three pillars of sustainability

Fayette County Public School’s Sustainability + Wellness Strategic Plan is a five-year roadmap that builds upon our schools’ strengths, momentum, and years of sustainability progress in building efficiency, environmental literacy and student & staff wellness that has established FCPS as a national leader in sustainability. In all realms of our work, the Sustainability + Wellness Strategic Plan must focus on how we are promoting the learning, achievement, development, and well-being of each student by closely monitoring its alignment with FCPS’s vision to prepare graduates for college and career, engaged fully in their communities and ready to excel in a global society. This Plan seeks to improve FCPS’s stewardship of fiscal, natural and human resources by empowering students, staff and families to improve sustainability + wellness on each school campus. The Plan guides a practice-based understanding of the relationship between sustainability and student learning.
The Plan reflects a future-oriented perspective on sustainability that is optimistic, emphasizes development and strengths, and focuses on human potential. They are aspirational, recognizing that our changing world will continue to transform—and the demands to improve economic, wellness and environmental literacy along with it.
The district-wide Steering Committee is chaired by It’s About Sustainability chairpersons Logan Poteat (Energy Engineer), Tresine Logsdon (Sustainability Curriculum Coordinator) and Debbie Boian (Wellness Coordinator) and includes insight and expertise from diverse working groups representing all operational and instructional teams.

The Plan is a living document that will be systematically reviewed by the Sustainability + Wellness Steering Committee, a team of diverse stakeholders representing each of the five focus areas. A critical metric to be considered will include schools’ annual performance on the Sustainability Scorecard, a benchmarking tool organized by the three pillars of Sustainability + Wellness: Environmental Literacy, Building Efficiency and Student Wellness.

Sustainability Scorecard
Each school submitted a Sustainability Scorecard to benchmark our schools on the three
pillars of sustainability: building efficiency, student wellness and environmental literacy. Based
on a point scale, the Sustainability Scorecard provides schools an opportunity to learn best
practices in sustainability from each other and national norms and earn Bronze Bloom (top
30%), Silver Leaf (top 20%) or Gold Tree (top 10%) recognition, along with the top achievers is
whole school sustainability (cumulative score). Gold Tree school principals were recognized at
an October 2018 District Leadership Meeting.

National Green School Award After Fayette Co Public Schools accepted the Best in Schools- School District award at the
March 2016 Green Schools National Conference in Pittsburgh, PA for
embracing the three-pillar model of sustainability to holistically address
environmental literacy, building performance and student wellness,
FCPS It’s About Sustainability continues to lead the nation in
empowering students lead the way towards healthier, greener school
campuses in Lexington and serves as a model for districts across the
nation.
Energy Savings & Financial Stewardship 2018-2019 gave FCPS Sustainability many reasons to celebrate:
Tates Creek Elementary was FCPS’s eighth consecutive Green Ribbon National School.
We were able to achieve a reduction in the Energy Usage Intensity (EUI – Energy use per square foot of building area) of approximately 6% for the district leading to increased cost avoidance.
Grant funding provided by Kentucky Utilities and facilitated through the Kentucky School Board Association provided funding for energy efficiency projects that replaced energy inefficient metal-halide lighting in eight of our gymnasiums with newer, more efficient LED lighting. These were installed over the summer break in 2018 and are expected to provide utility cost savings in excess of $30,000 annually.

Electricity bills provide energy usage in kWh (kilowatt-hours) and natural gas bills provide
energy usage in MCF (thousands of cubic feet). Since these are different units of measurement, they must be converted into a common unit to accurately analyze data. To
compare usage equally, they are converted to thousands of British Thermal Units (kBtu).
The metric to determine energy efficiency of a building is the EUI or Energy Usage Intensity. This
metric measures how much energy is used per square foot of conditioned building area and is a good way
to compare dissimilar buildings to one another, or compare one district as a whole to another district. It
is hard to compare the energy usage of a high school to an elementary school if you are using raw usage
data, but when you compare the energy use per square foot, it becomes more clear and much easier to
understand how efficient (or inefficient) different buildings are. From 2018 to 2019, FCPS was able to
reduce the district-wide EUI by 6%.
In the above graph, you can see that even as our district is growing rapidly in square footage from
new buildings and renovations, our energy consumption is still declining. This is thanks to newer energy
efficient technologies utilized in our schools, in conjunction with building occupants becoming more
aware of how their actions affect the district’s energy consumption.

energy consumption divided by the district-wide building square footage.
With the increasing energy efficiency of our district, in addition to audits of our utility bill rates,
FCPS was able to reduce its electricity and natural gas bills by approximately $400,000 from 2018 to
2019. At the pace that utility rates have been rising over the last decade, it is imperative that we
continue the trend of improved energy efficiency. The more efficient we are as a district, the more
funds we will be able to divert back into the classroom.

What are we doing to reduce our utility bills other than just trying to conserve energy?
FCPS Sustainability is constantly monitoring utility rate structures to make sure we are
on the best possible rate we can be. The latest audit of our utility structure performed
will save the district approximately $240,000 annually in avoided costs.
FCPS Sustainability is hosting listening sessions with the lead custodian or campus
foreman, sustainability coordinator, and administrator in charge of grounds at each
school. We have been and will continue to meet with each school to discuss issues of
energy consumption and sustainability.
Implementation of our new Sustainability & Wellness Strategic Plan in the 2019-2020
school year will inform our decisions and projects moving forward.
FCPS is on a favorable course and we believe this trend will only continue as all stakeholders
become increasingly engaged in our district energy efficiency and ecological footprints. Since the
energy management program began in 2010, FCPS has been able to avoid the rapid increase in utility
costs it had been experiencing for many years prior. Even though we will still see increases in costs
due to rising utility prices, FCPS has seen a cost avoidance of over $12 million just from energy
reductions alone since 2010. That amount does not even include the cost avoidance from rate
structure studies, natural gas contracts, rebate programs, and similar initiatives implemented for the
district!

E=USE2 Education leads to Understanding Sustainability, Energy and the Environment
continues to engage, celebrate and empower our students to analyze their own
collected data to design and implement awareness and sustainability
improvement projects in partnership with numerous and diverse community
partners.
E=USE2 works in conjunction with the Kentucky NEED Project, KGHS (KY Green & Healthy Schools)
and LFUCG’s LiveGreen Lexington program to provide students, administrators, faculty, staff and
community partners with guidance to help make informed decisions about sustainable practices and
environmental efficiency for the well-being and benefit of the Lexington-Fayette County area and
social, environmental and economic health of our community.
By choosing smart, sustainable options, schools improve students’ environmental literacy, save
natural and financial resources and provide healthier, more effective learning environments by
applying 21st Learning and STEM skills. E=USE2 is based on five basic principles: assessment, raising
awareness, educating, monitoring, projects and partnerships (A.R.E.M.P2).

Design 101 and Renovation 101 Teams
Through our Design 101 and Renovation 101 Team
program, architects and engineers from design & renovation
projects are invited to meet monthly with E=USE2 students to
serve as liaison between their school renovation and school
community.
The instructional objective of these teams is to
incorporate “green” infrastructures within instructional
strategies, acquaint students with architect and engineering
career pathways, and train E=USE2 students as liaisons to the
school community on design progress and the benefits and functionality of sustainable, high performance
components of the renovation. E=USE2 students met with architect/s and
engineers monthly to interpret site plans and construction documents, take
hard hat tours, practice architectural techniques, engage in hands-on learning
with models and discuss many components of the school renovation.
Students use this information to develop a PowerPoint presentation to be
delivered at faculty meetings and for parents at Open House.

leveraged ILP (Individualized Learning Plan) data to engage 7th-11th grade students in hands-on activities
around 8 career clusters and post-secondary
programs.

Outdoor Classroom Coalition
There are currently 43 Outdoor Classrooms of all types and sizes in our schools and a great deal of enthusiasm among parents, students and teachers for outdoor classroom space that includes rain gardens, community gardens, vegetable gardens, native/pollinator gardens, sensory gardens, herb gardens, etc.
The Outdoor Classroom Coalition, launched in June 2018, is an alliance of community partners, local businesses and educators who have a passion for growing and nurturing Outdoor Classrooms in our city, charged with implementing the following six Action Items to schools:
1. Develop a protocol to help connect school Outdoor Classroom projects to community partners + resources to help schools with primary needs: supplies, design, summer maintenance, curriculum integration, culinary connections
2. Develop curricular + wellness justification for outdoor learning programming to begin a dialogue with FCPS Facilities on design guidelines
3. Define critical needs and apply Coalition support to each 18-19 Pilot School (William Wells Brown, Frederick Douglas, Deep Springs)
4. Leverage Google Classroom as online space for schools to share best practices, lessons-learned & asynchronous dialogue: Outdoor Classroom Manual
5. Leverage KAEE Outdoor Classroom Symposium to connect community partners with schools (strands: gardens, native/pollinator, trees)
6. Discuss high school internships (Locust Trace Agriscience Center, The Learning Center) and college interns (UK College of Ag, Food & the Environment and UK Office of Student Engagement)

Farm To School
Fayette County’s Farm To School program experienced
extraordinary growth and development during the 18-19 school year. A
highly collaborative initiative that includes community partners such as
Fayette County Child Nutrition, Fayette County Health Department, UK
Extension, Lexington Farmers Market, Farm Bureau, UK College of Ag,
Locust Trace AgriScience Farm and Local Food Association, Fayette
County Farm To School’s mission is to empower youth to make healthy
lifestyle choices by promoting the benefits of consuming locally grown and
produced foods.
For the 18-19 school year, Fayette County Farm To School piloted a revised
curriculum model for 4th and 5th grade students
that includes three 45-minute lessons to
teach environmental, economic and
human health benefits of local food. Each
lesson is accompanied by a local food Taste
Test such as local kale chips, blueberries,
sweet potatoes and honey.
To date this new model has been
implemented in 23 schools.

Tree Week 2018
Launched in October 2018 and in partnership with UK Urban Forest Initiative, local nonprofit Trees
Lexington, LFUCG Division of Urban Forestry and FCPS Operations, six FCPS schools participated in
citywide Tree Week by planting 45 trees. Participating schools include

No Idling Campaigns
In partnership with the KY Division for Air Quality and Earth Day
Network©, twelve elementary, four middle
and one high school have implemented a
No Idling Campaign that was strictly
voluntary, student-driven and included
measurable benchmarks. To
implement a No Idling campaign,
students and teachers collect
pre/concurrent/post campaign data and leverage awareness and
communication tools (flyers, newsletter templates, pledge cards, car tags,
Thank You notes) to keep parents informed of the health, economic and environmental benefits of No
Idling, particularly in afternoon carpool lines. All participating schools experienced a reduction of 40%
idling with some achieving a 60% reduction. FCPS has been recognized by KY Division for Air Quality and
nominated for the KY Association for Environmental Education special project award.

Miscellaneous Sustainability & Environmental Education Updates
KY American Water Excellence in Water Education Program
Piloted spring 2015, KY American Water has partnered with over a dozen of
our schools to purchase and install 20+ water bottle refilling station in many FCPS schools. The KY American Water Excellence in Water Education program has diverted over 1 million plastic water bottles from the landfill-bound waste stream.
Aquaponics in the Classroom
In partnership with FoodChain and KY State University, twenty-one schools
have launched classroom aquaponic systems by raising tilapia and growing
vegetables without soil by recycling water in a sustainable food-production model. In
the simple setup, tilapia produce large volumes of
ammonia-rich waste that nitrogen-fixing bacteria quickly
convert to nitrite and nitrate that the plants need. The
plants in turn filter the water by removing nitrates which
is then returned to the fish tanks. This system--monitored,
maintained and eventually harvested by students--is used
to demonstrate plant life cycles and structure, nutrient
cycling, high-yield gardening, ecological issues,
biodiversity, and sustainable farming.
