FOREWORD

The 2019 Commodity Fact Sheets is the 26th edition of the annual

publication released by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA). The report is a compilation of basic statistical information for 50 commodities which are classified into food and non-food crops, livestock and poultry and fisheries.

Each commodity profile contains the following information:

production, area, yield, share in gross output in agriculture, prices, cost of production, exports, imports and domestic utilization. The report aims to serve as a quick yet comprehensive reference material for the various data users and stakeholders in the agriculture sector.

The PSA hopes to further improve the content and coverage of

this report. Thus, readers are encouraged to give their comments and suggestions to make the report more useful and relevant.

EXPLANATORY NOTES

1. Volume of production is expressed in metric tons and value of production is expressed in pesos. The values of commodities at current prices are taken from the Performance of Philippine Agriculture, a quarterly report published by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA). For commodities not highlighted in the Performance Report, the values are derived by multiplying the year’s volume of production with the average farmgate price in the same year.

2. The share in Gross Output in Agriculture is provided only for the commodities highlighted in the Performance of Philippine Agriculture. It is derived by dividing the value of production of the selected commodities by the total value of agricultural production at constant prices.

3. Major locations are the top provinces based on area planted for permanent

crops and area harvested for temporary crops.

4. Major producers are the top provinces based on volume of production. 5. Provinces with highest yield are provinces with the biggest production per

hectare or per bearing tree. 6. Data on cost of production per kilogram are updated estimates based on

given set of assumptions and procedures. The costs of production of temporary crops are expenses incurred in production during the period while those of permanent crops refer to maintenance costs of the farms.

7. Data on volume of exports and imports are expressed in net metric tons,

square meters, cubic meters and pieces. The data on value are Free on Board (FOB) value for exports and Cost Insurance Freight (CIF) value for imports expressed in peso terms.

8. Major markets/suppliers are the top exporting/importing countries based on

volume.

9. Data on domestic utilization are represented by net food disposable (NFD) and quantity of commodity that goes to processing. These data are generated by the Supply Utilization Accounts for Agriculture. NFD is the amount of food available in its original (unprocessed) form for human consumption. Net food disposable (NFD) is the balance or the remainder after all the “use” parameters are taken into account.

EXPLANATORY NOTES

1. Volume of production is expressed in metric tons and value of production is expressed in pesos. The values of commodities at current prices are taken from the Performance of Philippine Agriculture, a quarterly report published by the PSA.

The data on value are FOB value for exports and CIF value for imports expressed in peso terms.
