As the fifteen passenger van swingsinto the parking lot, everyone stops tostare. You’ve all seen them – bearingtwelve-inch-thick Bibles, library booksand math joke shirts, they march up, amini-herd swelling around you.Dressed from head to toe in pajamas, with the exception of a Yoda-costumedchild, Mom strides next to them wear-ing a “Super Mom” shirt. These are thefew, the proud, the homeschooled.

Everyone has misconceptionsabout homeschoolers, both thehumorous, the ignorant, and the com-pletely insulting. Regarded as a sepa-rate species by many public and privateschool students, as well as adults, vol-umes have been written on home-schooling and its pros and cons. Likeother students, there are variations ofhomeschoolers, ranging from thosewho memorize Latin roots for fun andteach themselves physics, to those whobelieve their age determines their grade(nine years old – ninth grade!) andconsider their birthday an officialschool holiday. Homeschoolers oftenexperience awkward pauses and awedlooks when asked what school theyattend – homeschooling isn’t like other

school, of course! We get extra creditfor doing the dishes, are baffled bylocker combinations, only watch cableon vacation and study outside undertrees. We never do real school… thatwould be too normal! Continue reading to discover thetruth about home schooling myths I’vedebunked, so that the next time yousee a group of children wanderingaround the mall as though they’ve

never been outside their house, you’llknow what to think.

MYTH 1: HOMESCHOOLERSNEVER DO SCHOOL. Contrary to popular belief, learn-ing can happen in groups of less thanthirty students and many homeschool-ers do the same amount and caliber ofwork (if not higher) and study thesame subjects as that of other students.

We’re just able to finish school fasterbecause we’re not held back by timeconstraints – in the typical homeschool environment, you’re neverunder lockdown due to bomb threatsor bathroom murders. Additional ben-efits include being the salutatorian, valedictorian and in the top ten per-cent of your class.

MYTH 2: HOMESCHOOLERSHAVE NO FRIENDS...OR, THEIRBEST FRIEND IS THEIR PETROCK.

Everyone considers them “quiet”simply because they are knowledgeableand able to talk about more maturesubjects than who a celeb is dating. While some homeschoolers are antiso-cial, many just simply abide by theproverb: “Better to keep your mouthclosed and be thought a fool than toopen it and remove all doubt.” Mosthomeschoolers have friends just likeeveryone else, which are made throughextra-curricular activities, clubs, sports,co-ops, and the like. However, be fore-warned when befriending a home-schooler – we will spell out every word, use abstract literary quotes, and will

openly correct your grammar.

MYTH 3: HOMESCHOOLERSDON’T LEARN AS MUCH ASPRIVATE AND PUBLIC SCHOOLKIDS. Homeschoolers learn the samebasic school subjects as everyone else:Math, English, Science, etc., but theyhave the opportunity to take uniqueclasses and electives (because of thevariety of courses offered), and havethe opportunity to dabble in a varietyof subjects while learning new thingsbecause they’re not confined to thestandard public and private schoolclasses. They are free to pursue theirindividual interests and passions. As ahomeschooler, I have experiencedopportunities that other students don’tnecessarily have access to, one of thembeing my internship at the Good Newsnewspaper, which I pursued because ofmy interest in journalism. Other stu-dents don’t have time to pursue manyextracurricular activities because theyhave to be in school during a certaintime and have to choose from certainclasses; homeschoolers can complete

FIVE MYTHS ABOUT HOMESCHOOLING

To answer this question we must begin withan examination of what Christian education is –or more precisely what it is not.Christian education is not merely a safe

escape from the world. The purpose ofChristian education is not to hide our childrenfrom the world, it is to prepare them for it. Inthe words of Professor James K.A. Smith ofCalvin College:“…Christian schools are called to be like

Aslan in the Chronicles of Narnia: not safe, butgood. Instead of antiseptic moral bubbles,Christian schools are moral incubators that helpstudents not only to see the glories of God’s cre-ation but also to discern and understand thebrokenness of this fallen world.”Our classrooms are to be places of discovery

where understanding the complexities of God’screation is pursued. Places where the broken-ness of the world is not ignored but engaged.Racism, slavery, poverty, persecution, beauty, creativity – these things and more are wrestledwith and understood. Not from a foundation ofsecular humanism, which places man’s fulfill-ment at its apex, but from a foundationof Truth found in Christ Jesus and supported byHis Word, which places His glorification at theapex.

Scripture tells us that we are to be salt andlight in the world. It also warns us that if we loseour saltiness, the vibrancy of faith that drawsothers to us, our value it diminished. Whatvalue is there then in sending a child, who hasyet to acquire their saltiness, into the world totake on a task for which they are not yetequipped? There is no value in that – worse yet,it might even be destructive to the child. This isthe position of many both inside and outside ofthe church.

If, as they say, education is about “preparingyoung people for life,” then Christian educationis about preparing young people to live outa Christian life. It is about making them salty.Preparing them for a battle that requires matu-rity and is not waged against flesh and bloodbut against powers and principalities.

We would never think of sending a youthfulwarrior off to war without first training andequipping him. My nephew recently returnedfrom Afghanistan. He left just barely older than19 but returned much older. It was an experi-ence that was both horrific and strengtheningfor him. He found a metal inside of him that hedid not realize was there…a resolve not beforeseen in him. But he didn’t go into that challengeunprepared.

Months of training, long days of drills, moretraining, schooling, and bonding with those heserved – all of this occurred before he enteredthe fray. Shortly before he left he stayed at myhome (I think more for the food than the com-pany). I asked him about going to war and if hewas afraid. His answer did not expose any fear, which I am certain was there somewhere; whathe shared was his confidence in his training andhis platoon. He even boldly stated “I am the bestthey have in my company.” He saw death and hefelt loss but he returned. He returned becausehe left prepared.

The battle our children will enter in thisworld is, thankfully, very different from the onemy nephew fought. But it is a battle for whichthey must be prepared. A preparation that hap-pens within the classrooms of Christian school. It is not a preparation Christian schools

thinks they can, or even desire, to do alone. It isa preparation that must be accomplished inpartnership with both your home and your

church. Each supporting the other to achieve acommon goal. Three critical entities in a child’slife, each working together for the advancementof the Kingdom – not in competition but incooperation. Each must do their part, uniquelyand in balance, or the process will fall apart. It isa partnership of co-laborers – each with a differ-ent gifting within the Body for the growing ofchildren to the glory of Jesus.

Christian education is not public educationwith Bible overlaid upon it. It is equipping stu-dents to think Christianly – to be Christianscholars. To give them a lens through whichthey can see the brokenness of the world. It isthrough this lens that every subject is taught. Itis this teaching that will enable students toengage the world with confidence having beenarmed with the discernment needed to makechoices rooted in Christian values.

Our world is more connected and thereforemore complex than ever before. The argumentsused by the world, while old in content, are newand more difficult to defeat in their construc-tion. “Sunday school” answers and understand-ings are no longer enough.

We must sharpen our students’ minds withmore than knowledge; we must help them pos-sess the mind of a Christian scholar – a mind sosharp and bright that it can no longer beignored or marginalized in the discourse ofideas. A student so empowered will be able tohold true to their faith as they walk the halls of

higher education, which are steeped in human-ism, and walk out respected, influential and vic-torious. This is why we must integrate faith andlearning so that our students will integrate faithand living.

In the book Outliers, Malcolm Gladwell, presents the idea that 10,000 hours of practicewithin a field brings about mastery. While thereis some debate about the legitimacy ofGladwell’s golden rule of mastery none haveargued against the impact that that extraordi-nary number of hours would have on one’sdevelopment within the chosen field.

Imagine spending eight hours a day foralmost three and a half years being mentored byone of the world’s greatest chefs or pianists orathletes. What kind of an impact would thathave on one’s skill in that area? That concentrat-ed amount of interaction with anyone wouldmost certainly begin to shape more than justone’s ability. The reality is that not only wouldone’s skill increase but one’s worldview wouldbe altered. That is the impact that education hasupon your child. The average child spends between 15,000 to

20,000 hours in school during their journeyfrom kindergarten to senior year. Those num-bers don’t include time outside of class doingwork, team practice or rehearsals. Add thosetimes in and the numbers soar.

Christ Prep Football seeks to build godly men for thenext generation. We accomplish this by teaching core valuessuch as confidence, courage, humility, and self-discipline.We use the disciplines that football offers as the teachingdevice.

Christ Prep Football has been serving the Greater KansasCity homeschooling community for over 15 years. We areblessed to be one of the premier home school football pro-grams in the country.

While we have won several national championships, andhave had many winning seasons, our greatest accomplish-ments are visible when our players move on to becomegodly husbands, fathers, missionaries, military men, busi-nessmen and faithful members of the local church. Seeingyoung men develop the character of Christ and serve Himfaithfully is what this program is all about.

Our team is made up of students who attend ChristPrep Academy, homeschool students and private school stu-dents attending schools that do not offer football. Playingfor Christ Prep allows players to stay in their current aca-demic environment while playing competitive 11-man foot-ball. We have an “approved” status with KSHAA (KansasHigh School Athletics Association) which allows us to playpublic and private schools.

II Timothy 1:7, is our team verse. You cannot succeed inlife or honor God being ruled by fear. Football is one of thebest ways for young men to learn to overcome fear, to lovesacrificially and develop self-discipline. Focusing on theirspiritual lives, we have devotions after each practice, encour-age prayer and fellowship, and promote a Biblical approachto all areas of life.

Although most homeschoolersaren’t around multiple students andteachers every day, studies show thatthey have an easier time adapting tocollege and life after high school, andthat their graduation rate, GPAs, andstandardized test scores are higherthan those of the typical college stu-dent. A classroom might be a drasticchange from studying at the kitchentable, but studies show that home-school graduates are more likely tohave voted and participated in com-munity service when compared toother adults. Homeschoolers have the opportu-nity to learn basic life skills such ascooking, cleaning, balancing a checkbook and more because they’re athome and around their families more. One of the biggest advantages ofChristian homeschooling is establish-ing a biblical worldview in your child’slife that will help them remain rootedin and able to defend their faith whenthey leave for college.

MYTH 5: HOMESCHOOLERSARE A THREAT. Not all home-educated familieshave ten kids, and the life expectancy isso much lower since we don’t vacci-

nate (just ask any pediatrician that hasto deal with homeschooling mothers),although this might be offset by theorganic food supply coming from ourbackyard gardens. Only 2 percent ofthe U.S. school population is home-schooled, so we’re not about to stripthe teacher’s unions of their power. Weare too busy supporting creationistinstitutes and building robots to both-er with world domination, and, afterall, we never leave our homes.

This article is not written to assertthat homeschooling is right for every-one, or that all homeschoolers are

exempt from these myths; just likeother students, not all homeschoolersare driven enough to stay on pace andresist laziness, and many are trulystrange (you should meet my siblings). There are pros and cons for all types ofschooling, but keep in mind that thestereotypes people have of home-schoolers aren’t always true. The nexttime you meet a homeschooler, think“normal.” We’re just like everyone else– although, if you offer us pie, we’ll askhow you can give us 3.14 (just kid-ding!).

Those hours of impact will be givento someone. Someone who is intent ontraining and shaping your child. This is why Christian education is so

critical. Having a child attend aChristian school means raising themup to be Christian scholars who followChrist with their whole heart. It meansequipping them with the tools neededto evaluate their world through thelens of Christian values. It means building upon, not chal-

lenging or tearing down, the valuesand beliefs you hold in your ownChrist-centered homes.

WHY CHRISTIAN EDUCATION?Because 15,000 hours of influence

over your children will be given tosomeone. Shouldn’t that someone be

preparing your children to serve thesame Lord as you and your home? The answer is clearly “Yes, Lord,

yes!”You have been given stewardship

over one of God’s most precious pos-sessions – your children. Christian education is a part of being agood steward with that treasure.May each of us as parents, as we

stand accountable for that which wehave been entrusted, hear those pre-cious words:“Well done good and faithful ser-

vant.”Adapted from a presentation given by

Head of School David Cooper at an all-parent meeting at Front RangeChristian School, Littleton, Colordo.

PRIVATE SCHOOLScontinued from page 26

Who is influencing your child? Achild's early years lay a spiritualfoundation for life. In our modernsociety many things will influenceyour child. The Barna Group studyfound parents were still the majorinfluencers of children. This posi-tion was however now being sharedwith media and laws.School came in at the second

level. The 1,200 hours spent eachyear in school over roughly 12 yearsare seen as very influential.Christians may be surprised that

church was further down the list. The 100 hours or so a year inchurch can be very significant, yetother influences are seen as greater.Your child's teachers will have a sig-nificant influence.Jesus said: “A student is not above

his teacher, but everyone who isfully trained will be like histeacher.” Luke 6:41.Teachers are significant role mod-

els. Your child will imitate, orbecome like, their teachers. As par-ents it is important we help ensureour children have suitable rolemodels. The Apostle Paul himselfencourages us to “Imitate me as Iimitate Christ.” 1 Corinthians 11:1In selecting a school parents are

choosing who they partner with forthe education of their child.Education is more than gainingknowledge about the world aroundus. It is learning how to respond toand live out that knowledge.Different teachers do have very dif-ferent understandings of what isimportant in life. The Apostle Paul highlights the

foundational differences betweenChristians and non-Christianswhen he asks the question: “Whatdoes a believer have in commonwith an unbeliever?” 2 Corinthians6:15Paul urges Christians to not "be

yoked" together with unbelievers. He urges us to still be in the worldyet to avoid situations where we areobliged to follow, or adopt the val-ues of unbelievers. Non-Christianteachers can be dedicated and pas-sionate yet they cannot lead ourchildren into biblical truth aboutour world and their place in it. Jesusalso points out the obvious: “Can ablind man lead a blind man? Won'tthey both fall into a pit?” Luke 6:38In Christian schools parents,

teachers and church members canwork together to positively influencechildren. Other parents in theChristian school community willgenerally share a similar view of theworld. They will become additionalrole models to your children. Thissense of community and commonvalues can make the role of parent-ing much easier. The Biblesays “Train up a child in the way heshould go, and when he is old hewill not depart from it.”Proverbs 22:6

Choosing a school whichemploys practising Christians asteachers gives parents a greater sayin who will be a role model for theirchildren. Christian teachers are notperfect. Nor do they have all theanswers. Yet they are part of a widerChristian community workingtogether with, and on behalf of, par-

HOMESCHOOLINGcontinued from page 26

The importance ofChristian teachers

1. There are basically two kingdoms: a kingdom of lightand a kingdom of darkness. It seems strange to havethose who walk in darkness educate children of light. Itdoesn't fit.

2. If Jesus Christ is Lord, then He is Lord of all. We can-not divide things into secular and sacred.

3. All truth is God's truth, and God's Word sheds lighton our path. Only in His light can we see light.Education is not focused on possibilities but on cer-tainties found in God's Word.

4. Deuteronomy 6 tells parents that, in all they do, they

should provide a godly education 24/7.

5. Three key institutions that shape a child are thehome, the church and the school. Children are servedbest when all three institutions point them in the samedirection.

6. Only an education that has the liberty to address thewhole child -- social, intellectual, emotional, physicalAND spiritual -- reaches the possibility of excellence.

7. The best preparation for effective service is to be wellgrounded in one's mind before direct engagement ofthe culture.
