2018-19 DEMONSTRATIONS Our 2018-19 year includes excellent demonstrations! September 2018: Linda Wells showed us how she integrates different source materials into a single work. Website: http://wellsfineart.com

Figure 3: Mural by Linda Wells

January 2019: Nancy Lilly presented a demo that centered on achieving layers of malleable texture through the buildup of ground, of underpainting and lots of fixative. Website: https://nancylillyartist.com

February 24, 2019: Be sure to attend this meeting for a demonstration by Robert Douglass to learn about his techniques in landscape and structural pastel painting. Website: http://www.DouglassArts.com

April 26, 2019: This program will feature Jen Evenhus, our 2019 exhibit judge. She is a nationally recognized, award winning artist. Her bold use of color is what first attracts the eye. She is naturally drawn to patterns, shapes, and movement found in nature, cityscapes, interiors, figures and everyday objects, translating those into unique works of art. Jen captures their essence with simplification and exaggeration in contemporary impressionist and abstract paintings. Website: https://jenevenhus.com Our April and May demonstrations are sure to be something you’ll want to see. Check our APS website for these future details: https://austinpastelsociety.org

2019 WORKSHOP

The Beauty of Imperfection Saturday & Sunday, March 2 & 3, 2019 Location: Apache Shores Community Hall 14919 General Williamson Dr. Austin, TX 78734 (The studio is located in Lakeway, TX) This workshop is full, but members can attend her April 26th APS demonstration!

Because striving for perfection leads to paralysis, Master Pastelist Jen Evenhus kicks perfection out the window, giving students permission to experiment and play with pastel and other materials to create bold

expressive works of art as we step fearlessly toward the unknown. Using timed exercises to loosen up and reveal your innate intuition forces us to use bold strokes with wild abandon, creating happy little accidents and mark-making that reveal your personal style.

Students will work with landscape photos provided by the instructor, with their own photo reference, with still life/floral objects, and weather permitting, do some plein air sketching.

We will use contemporary impressionist, expressionist and abstract styles as we explore shapes, composition, positive and negative space, bold vs neutral color and mark-making.

There will be plenty of challenging exercises, instructor demos, one-on-one coaching,

critiques, discussions and painting throughout this intense fun workshop with PSA Master Pastelist Jen Evenhus. Come with an open mind and a willing spirit!

NORTH HILLS GALLERY NON-JURIED EXHIBIT

Our annual non-juried exhibit was held in November 2018. The theme this year was “Wildlife.” We had about 30

pastel paintings on display by our members. The reception included a mix of about 30 members and local residents, who voted and selected the award winning pastel paintings.

PASTEL TIPS AND TRICKS Got a technical tip to share? Let us know and we’ll publish it in out next APS Newsletter! Keeping a Record - Tip from Nancy Lilly

Nothing frustrates me more than using up a particular color of pastel when I haven’t finished a painting. I use a lot of Sennelier soft pastels. Some are

wrapped in paper with a tiny number on the bottom of the label. Others didn’t come with wrappers as I purchased them in a set. In the past when I ran out of a color, I’d get in the car and go down to Jerry’s Artarama art supply store here in Austin and stand there at the Sennelier display and try and figure out what the color was that I needed. Well, after years and years of fumbling around, I decided there had to be a better way, and there is. Check out Dakota Art Pastels website: www.dakotapastels.com. Under the PASTELS line in the header on the home page you will see a link to Color Charts. This is a wonderful thing. Dakota Pastels will make you a handmade color chart for many brands of pastel. (Art Spectrum, Blue Earth Handmade, Caran d’Ache, Sennelier, Townsend, Unison just to name some, but not all.) Here is how they explain this wonderful service, which I highly recommend using! “DAKOTA HANDMADE COLOR CHARTS Color charts made with the actual pastels are the most accurate means of selecting color. We produce the following color charts at Dakota Pastels. The charts we make are on Archival

White paper in an 8 1/2"x 11" format and are lightly fixed with Perfix. You can also purchase a blank chart that is labeled but not colored to make your own color chart description.”
