a tremendous feeling of excitement about the Frank and Maureen Wilkens Science & Engineering Center. This new glass building will be located in the heart of campus and put science on display. It will replace a functionally obsolete science building that will be taken down when the new building is completed. The new Wilkens building will support a modern education and create and environment with unlimited possibilities to enhance students’ intellectual and practical skills. If you would like to read more about the project, go to www.ccccfoundation.org and click on Wilkens Science Center.

We thank you again for your generous support during 2019. Each donor to the College Educational Foundation makes a real difference as we support CCCC with student scholarships, and funds for new buildings and renovations. Thank you for all you do.

Sincerely,

Kathy McNamara, Chief Executive Officer

Each year we create and share this annual report of giving to express our gratitude to all donors to Cape Cod Community College Educational Foundation. You have made a difference in the lives of the College, our students and faculty. On their behalf, we say “thank you!”

At the College’s Commencement in May, two alumni were honored for their contributions and recognized with Alumni of the Year awards. Matthew Dolan and Frank Frederickson received this honor. Please go to p. 9 to read the profiles of these outstanding individuals who bring honor to the College.

The Foundation said goodbye in June to three Board members who retired from the board having served our mission with great dedication and passion for many, many years. David Willard, David Scotch, and alumnus Jim McEvoy each gave selflessly of their time, wisdom and professional skills to further the work of the Foundation in supporting Cape Cod Community College. We salute them for making a difference in so many lives.

The spread on the opposite page shares the news about the “go-ahead” on the design and construction of a new science building at the College. There is

“A new state-of-the-art building is a vitally important resource. It will enable the College to elevate the quality of education and better prepare students for today’s workforce.”

Mrs. Maureen Wilkens, a visionary and generous benefactor of Cape Cod Community College, is contributing $5 million toward the construction of the College’s new Science and Engineering Building. This is the largest single donation by an individual in the College’s history.

“The College is so important to our community. It provides outstanding higher education opportunities for our neighbors on the Cape and Islands and beyond,” said Mrs. Wilkens. “A new science building has been needed for a very long time. I’m pleased that the Commonwealth of Massachusetts is funding $25 million of the project but there is still money to raise to complete the project. I want to make sure, with this new building, CCCC will be able to provide the state-of-the-art Science, Technology, Engineering, Math (STEM) education required in the 21st Century.”

In July 2018, with tremendous support from the local state legislators, Governor Charlie Baker signed a bond bill guaranteeing $25 million to the College for a new Science Building. The total project cost is approximately $38 million. The College

is putting $3 million into the project. Cape Cod Community College Educational Foundation, Inc., is leading a $10 million capital campaign to raise the additional funds required for the new science building.

“Maureen Wilkens immense generosity to our college is truly remarkable,” said John L. Cox, President of Cape Cod Community College. “Her understanding of the importance of CCCC developed many years ago when she and her husband Frank first moved to the Cape. One of the initial gifts to the College came after Mrs. Wilkens met a young woman, a single parent, who was trying to afford higher education. The Wilkens established an endowed scholarship to annually fund the education of single parents. Since then, she has generously supported innumerable projects, most recently, the renovation of the College’s Nursing Lab. With this leadership gift, she is making an enduring impact on generations of students.”

The new Frank and Maureen Wilkens Science and Engineering Center is expected to be completed by 2022, and will create new, modern learning spaces that will allow faculty to better teach subjects related to STEM, which has a growing labor market on Cape.

Two individuals were honored at the College’s May 2019 Commencement Ceremony as the Alumni of the Year.

Frank G. Frederickson is the chief of the Yarmouth Police Department. He graduated from Cape Cod Community College in 1979, and earned a bachelor’s degree at Northeastern University, and a master’s degree at Anna Maria College. Frank is, remarkably, in his 40th year in policing in Yarmouth. He has worked at all ranks in the police department, beginning as a summer officer. He is in his ninth year as Chief of the department. Frank is a three-time recipient of the Department’s “Officer of the Year” award.

These are some of the factual milestones of Frank’s successful career, in which he has earned many awards and commendations. A recent award is, perhaps, most noteworthy because it shines light on the character of Chief Frederickson. The Cape and Islands chapter of the American Red Cross surprised him with a special award in recognition of his tremendous leadership and compassion in the aftermath of the killing of one of his officers in the line of duty.

Chief Frederickson supported the officer’s family, the Yarmouth Police family, and the greater Cape community through this tragedy. It was a role he never wanted but, as a recognized leader, with the training and experience to guide him, he carried – and continues to carry – the community through a truly difficult time. In his “spare time,” Frank is a frequent and consistent speaker in CCCC’s criminal justice classes. He is also a member of the College’s Criminal Justice Advisory Board.

Cape Cod Community College is proud to recognize Frank G. Frederickson as an outstanding graduate and role model.

Matthew Donlan is the new Chief Executive Officer at Addiction Treatment Center of New England. Until recently he was director of community affairs at the River Oaks Treatment Center/American Addiction Centers in Tampa, Florida. Matt explains, “Our mission is to transform lives and give hope to the hundreds of people battling drug and/or alcohol addiction.”

Matt is a person in long-term recovery from addiction. He credits Cape Cod Community College as an essential step in his mid-life career change. Previously, he had been working full-time as a union ironworker in Boston. He completed an Addiction Counselor Education Certification program at UMass-Boston at night and on weekends.

He then enrolled at Cape Cod Community College and adjusted his work schedule to meet his academic goals. It had been over 15 years since he had taken a math course, but he credits Professor George Bent with making Statistics a fun learning experience. He is grateful for encouragement from George and other faculty that led to his graduating with honors in 2015. He received multiple scholarships to complete a bachelor’s degree in mental health studies at UMass-Amherst in 2016. Matt took advantage of an offer to relocate to Florida and join American Addiction Centers in opening an addiction treatment facility in Tampa.

Matt’s life story is one of working hard to maintain his own recovery, while making a significant difference in the lives of others struggling with addiction and mental health issues.

Cape Cod Community College is proud to recognize Matthew Donlan as an outstanding graduate and role model.
