Catapult Games Let’s face it - being motivated to stay active can be a challenge for us all. Motivating some individuals to stay active at our day programs can be a challenge of its own.
Through creative thinking and a grant from the NYS Department of Health, Schenectady ARC’s Maple Ridge Center was able to purchase new gaming equipment and a highly anticipated virtual reality game called “Don’t Look Down”.
This is a fun and exciting game involves a lot of climbing. It was developed by the Schenectady-based software company Catapult Games, and is being used to promote physical exercise, concentration, decision-making and hand eye coordination.
Dane Jennings, CEO of Catapult Games has been a tremendous partner and resource through this project, working closely with Schenectady ARC’s MIS Department as the new equipment and software was being introduced.
“I’m excited to see how motivated people are to play this virtual reality game. It’s going to tremendously improve peoples’ desire to be more active in their daily lives”, said Kelly Dombrowski, Site Director of Maple Ridge Center.
Our Schenectady ARC family loves technology and we have found some great ways to meet the changing needs of the people we support. The Echo Dots help with many goals, including independence (timers for tasks and reminders, checking weather to know how to dress) and speech (speaking slowly and clearly). These devices can play music, answer questions, and be used to make to-do and shopping lists. We have developed apps for iPads with the help and support of industry professionals that assist with nutrition, plan goals, and organizational skills. These apps are developed specically for individuals with intellectual or other developmental disabilities. We have worked closely with individuals to learn more about their goals and interests, enabling us to enhance their computer knowledge, teach best use practices for their personal devices, and add specic technology goals within their plans. Individuals were so interested in learning more about technology on a regular basis that we created a Tech Club for the residents of one of our houses.
Individuals and families expressed an interest in learning more about assistive technology and using smart devices in their homes. We hosted an event where our guest speaker taught participants how to create a safe and connected home. She also demonstrated how to integrate home technology to empower people with disabilities to be more independent, stay connected and work toward personal goals. In addition to the presentation, our clinicians from the Speech department hosted a session for individuals we support to teach them how to navigate their own devices (iPads, smart phones) and helped them with specic areas of interest such as email, FaceTime, apps, games and e-books.
The implementation of Telemedicine has made healthcare more accessible and has increased patient engagement. Clinicians and people we support can share information in real time and patients can see a clinician without having to wait for an appointment or travel outside of their home.

Schenectady ARC’s Technology Committee has developed a variety of initiatives to increase and improve our use of technology for the agency and for the people we support.
Technology has the ability to provide unique opportunities to help the people we support work toward their goals. We have worked to bring new and expanded technology into our residential houses, our clinic and directly to the individuals in many of our programs. These initiatives included:
- installing Echo Dots at several of our residences
- developing additional apps for individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities
- working with individuals to incorporate technology into their plans to help them reach their goals
- hosting a “Tech Night” for families and individuals
- added the ability to use Telemedicine

Making a gift toWhen you donate to Schenectady ARC, you help us to improve our exceptional programs and services that are designed to help individuals with intellectual and other developmental disabilities. Your investment supports our mission of commitment to helping people in the Capital Region of New York enjoy healthy, rewarding lives as members of their community.
Schenectady ARC’s Planned Giving Program, The Erlicher Society, recognizes individuals who have chosen to support Schenectady ARC through legacy giving: for example, recognizing Schenectady ARC in a will, naming Schenectady ARC as a beneciary of a life insurance policy, or donation appreciated stock through an estate bequest.
The Society is named in honor of Harry Erlicher. In the early 1970’s, Harry Erlicher made a signicant bequest to Schenectady ARC. That gift has been a powerful force for good at Schenectady ARC - it provided funds for the construction of Maple Ridge Center, and it has provided on-going support for programs that are underfunded or not funded at all.
Today, more than ever, we need to build on the spirit of Harry Erlicher and encourage individuals to include Schenectady ARC in their charitable giving and their estate planning. As funding continues to present challenges, we need a strong source of non-governmental funds to make sure we can always provide the supports and services that people need, not just those the goverment chooses to fund.
In addition to joining The Erlicher Society, there are additional ways to support Schenectady ARC.
You can make an outright gift by cash, check or credit card, online at arcschenectady.org, by mail to Schenectady ARC, 214 State Street, Schenectady, NY 12305 or by phone via credit card at (518) 688-8278.
