ILLUSIONS IN TRANSITIn 2019, Nottingham Arts Mela celebrates 31 years of Mela in the UK. Illusions in Transit is our theme - exploring the journeys of people, art and society, and offering six days which capture the creative and cultural spirit of the city of Nottingham, the Midlands and UK.

With a strong South Asian rooted arts and cultural offer, through music, dance, crafts and food, we offer spaces to activate the imagination, explore worlds where we can connect, or find a moment of respite perhaps. Our aspiration is one of a more collaborative and conscious community, where people from all walks of life can share, learn, laugh and be together.

The programme this year includes live performances, exhibitions, workshops, poetry and special community engagement commissions. The festival will be held at New Art Exchange, Arboretum Park and venues across Hockley.

When in a state of flux, unsure about the future, with changing lives, societies, political ideologies and perspectives – we seek a moment of harmony, happiness… inspiration.

Welcome to Nottingham Arts Mela 2019!

The boys are considered living gods and goddesses during this process, celebrated with immense religious fervour and gaiety. The second film, Dada and The Punjabi Princess (Dir: Chila Kumari Burman/UK/2017/14m), is a fusion of punk, pop art and Bollywood. Burman subverts our expectations of how Asian women look and behave through a playful engagement with a range of cultural and visual histories. The screening will be followed by a discussion between directors Ashok Vish, Chila Kumari Burman and Skinder Hundal.FREE

EXHIBITIONS

MEMORY OF LANDPhotographer-filmmaker Nirvair Singh Rai and visual artist Janhavi Sharma have embarked on a research project across Punjab and the holy city of Amritsar to create a new body of work. The images displayed remember the Jallianwalla Bagh massacre of 1919 which saw the British Indian Army fire upon unarmed civilians, assembled for a peaceful protest during the Sikh Baisakhi festival. Through visiting the site, and interviewing local communities, Rai and Sharma seek to understand the psychology of surviving grief through the memory of land.

NAE OPENWorks in painting, drawing, video, live art, sculpture, installation and mixed media by 56 artists selected by an illustrious jury from 700 submissions, representing contemporary diverse Britain in 2019.

MELA — ‘gathering’ Nottingham Mela began in the UK in 1988. This South Asian festival was one of the first opportunities for a celebration designed by this community in a public space. Far from home, it gave a sense of identity, and a chance for this generation of British South Asians to share art and culture which they had grown up with, inherited. Nottingham and other Melas which followed swiftly on from the first, have now become a regular part of the festival calendar across the UK.

In 2018, the Mela in Nottingham changed its name to Nottingham Arts Mela. For a number of years, the festival had moved towards not only showcasing, but looking at contemporary as well as classical expressions of arts media. Its essence is rooted in continually searching, adapting and changing with the communities it serves, in doing so, the global narrative became increasingly integral to the festival. Art and culture is a central part of the sharing of this journey, so we felt and feel, it should be open and accessible to those from all walks of life. In the quest to share this immense heritage, the beauty and elegance of classical South Asian art-forms, we have found also exciting new interpretations of these, contemporary ones, ones which grapple with some of the questions that society faces today. As communities change, as families change, as the world changes, the conversation becomes all the more diverse. Our belief is that this humble ‘gathering’ should offer a place for this to be celebrated and enjoyed as it did back in 1988.
