  • CHAMBER VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED We have a big current need for people to help at our community events, including Independence Day, raffle ticket sales, and Thursday Night Live Courthouse Concerts. We especially need help with our visitors' booths at the Outdoor Expo, the Sun Dried Music Fest, Down Home Days, and the Ingham County Fair. This is another great way to network and boost your business, and it is great fun too!

Chamber volunteer opportunities are open to all associates and employees of Chamber member companies and organizations, their families, and friends. Those not affiliated with a business or organization may become Chamber associates at no charge by doing two or more hours of volunteering. For more information on where you fit in -- or to review the committee, activity, and event opportunities -- just call the Chamber office at (517) 676-1046.

The inaugural Mason Area Fireworks Fun Bike Ride event will take place the morning of Saturday, June 29, 2019. The rides will start and end at Mason High School, 1001 S. Barnes Street. Hosted by the Mason Firefighters Association and the Mason Area Chamber of Commerce, this first-ever fun bike ride event is set to run on paved streets and roads through mid-Michigan's Ingham County, including historic Mason, Dansville, Leslie, and surrounding townships. Net proceeds help support the Mason Firefighters Association annual fireworks display on the 4th of July, as well as the Mason Area Chamber of Commerce's parades and other community events. Routes are planned for all levels of cyclists. For enthusiastic cyclists, there is a 10-mile, 25-mile and 50-mile fun ride. There will be snack and water stations along each of those routes. Families with children may enjoy the special 3-mile family

loop and spend a more leisurely morning together. To participate, you may register either online or in person. Go to the website www.masonchamber.org and click on Events and then on the June 29 Fireworks Fun Bike Ride. For those enthusiastic cyclists, the registration fee is $30 with no shirt and $40 with a shirt (shirt size is guaranteed if registration is before June 14). per family in advance or on the date of the event. There will be a limited number of Fireworks Fun Bike Ride shirts in limited sizes available to purchase at check-in for the family loop participants and those who register later in June. The event begins at 8:00 a.m. in the south parking lot of the Mason High School and will run until 1:00 p.m. Those who have preregistered or are participating in the family loop may start any time before 12:00 noon. Local Modern Woodmen service project a success

Modem Woodmen of America members in Mason recently came together to revitalize the 9/11 Firemen Memorial. The project, which took place on May 20th at the Mason Fire Department, benefited the Mason Community and the families of the firemen who lost their lives on that dreadful day. "We're so happy to support our community in this way," says Randy, local Modern Woodmenvolunteer leader. "Events like this give our members an opportunity to make a difference." Coordinated by local Modern Woodmen members, the fraternal financial services organization's Summit chapters, chapters and youth service clubs provide opportunities for members to take part in social and educational activities and volunteer projects to meet local needs. For more information or to get involved, contact Chris Buck at (517) 525-2737. Modern Woodmenwas founded in 1883 as a fraternal benefit society. The organization supports members, families and communities with a unique blend of financial services, fraternal benefits and localimpact opportunities. In 2018, Modern Woodmen and its members provided $19.9 million and 470,000 volunteer hours to support fraternal activities and programs. • ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- LCC - MASON JEWETT CAMPUS by Mark Bathurst ([email protected])

You've read a lot about the pilot and maintenance technician shortage not only in the U.S. but throughout the world. In the maintenance realm, airlines, manufactures, MRO facilities, corporate flight departments and all other aviation maintenance operations are scrambling to find enough qualified, competent technicians to meet their demand. Boeing forecasts a worldwide requirement for 754,000 new technicians in the next 20 years. In the U.S. alone there will be a demand for 189,000 new technicians. Filling that demand is everyone's focus-employers, schools and now even Congress. As part of the 2018 FAA Reauthorization Act passed by Congress and signed into law, the bill authorizes the appropriation of $5,000,000 in the 2019-2023 fiscal years to fund various test programs of $500,000 each. These test programs would be an amalgam of an employer (airline, MRO, manufacturer, etc.), a state or local government entity and a school that teaches an approved FAA maintenance technician program under 14 CFR 147 (there are 177 FAA-approved schools in the U.S. that teach aircraft maintenance.) The test programs would be funded for the following opportunities: (1) To establish new educational programs that teach technical skills used in aviation maintenance, including purchasing equipment, or to improve existing such programs; (2) To establish scholarships or apprenticeships for individuals pursuing employment in the aviation maintenance industry, including obtaining airframe and powerplant mechanic certificates; (3) To support outreach about careers in the aviation maintenance industry in (a) Primary, secondary, and post-secondary school students; or (b) Communities underrepresented in the industry; (4) To support educational opportunities related to aviation maintenance in economically disadvantaged geographic areas; (5) To support transition to careers in aviation maintenance, including for members of the Armed Forces; or (6) To otherwise enhance aviation maintenance technical education or the aviation maintenance industry workforce, as determined by a unanimous vote of an FAA designated committee established to review applications.

This part of the FAA Reauthorization Act is designed to increase opportunities for individuals interested in aircraft maintenance careers and generally create awareness of the need for skilled technicians. Obviously, schools like LCC are very supportive of the direction Congress took and are extremely interested in participating in the test programs when made available by the FAA. --------------------------------------------------------------------

  • Final Note: Continuing a 47-year tradition, the Mason Area Chamber of Commerce publishes its "MASON in Motion" printed and mailed newsletter near the end of each month. This hard-copy newsletter has information about Chamber events and programs, new Chamber members, news from member businesses and organizations, and more - in a short four-page format. The several insert pages included in the newsletter each month are designed to be removed for easy sharing or posting within a business or organization. For this reason, the Chamber has decided to continue distributing this newsletter in the conventional manner with no opt-out. This also maintains value for limited advertising. Advertising inserts are just $100 per insertion to reach 450 key decision-makers in the Mason area. This newsletter is mailed to all contact people for Chamber members, Chamber volunteers, and select stakeholders. A .pdf copy of the newsletter is also available to all the same day it is delivered by the post office at the Chamber's website www.masonchamber.org. Deadline is the 20th of the month for all submissions. Items are included as space is available and submissions are edited for space and consistency of the publication. Since August of 2006, the Chamber also publishes a mid-month "MASON in Motion UPDATE" newsletter electronically. This e-mailed newsletter is forwarded to all who have submitted their e-mail addresses to the Chamber, provided they are associated with a Chamber member, are a Chamber volunteer, or are a select stakeholder. A link to the archive on the website for the .pdf copies of the printed and mailed "MASON in Motion" newsletter is included on the website. A .pdf copy of this UPDATE newsletter is also available to all at the Chamber's website www.masonchamber.org under the "Newsletters" tab. Deadline is the 10th of the month for all UPDATE submissions. All items submitted are included, subject to minor editing for publication consistency. It is the intention of the Chamber to limit broadcast e-mails to those who have e-mail addresses submitted to the Chamber to 24 times per year at most. Of course, those who are Chamber leaders and volunteers get much more frequent information e-mailed to them. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
