ORGANICALLY DRIVENBlue River Organic Seeds, as the name suggests, is dedicated solely to organic seed and organic farming. With knowl-edgeable dealers and support staff who are familiar with organic production, we focus our efforts to serve you, the organic farmer! It is our mission to provide 100% of our products as Certified Organic Seed. In this product guide you will see that we have achieved this lofty goal for all of our corn and soybean varieties for the 2020 planting season. These varieties are not only certified organic but are some of the most competitive in the seed industry today. Additionally, we are making great strides to increase our line-up of certified organic, varietal-specific, high yielding, and high-quality alfalfa and forage sorghum products. As we move forward, we will continue to invest in only the highest quality seed products, developed specifically for organically managed systems.

Blue River Organic Seeds was founded with a singular dedication to organic seed and organic agriculture, and we are 100% dedicated to continuing that path into the future. When you buy your seed this year and in future years to come, please consider that a very large percentage of any profit that we make goes back into the research and the selection of the best varieties for your certified organic operation. Why is this important? Your purchase of Blue River products helps ensure the availability of organic seed products in the future. Buying conventional, un-treated seed may save a farmer a small amount of money in the short term, but it does not ensure that the research and production of a diverse line-up of organic-specific seed will continue. If every dollar spent is a vote for the change you want to see in the world, take pride in buying certified organic seed for your farm whenever possible. Because of you, our customers, Blue River’s efforts can continue!

You have my sincere appreciation for your dedication to organic agriculture and the trust you place in us as your organic seed provider,

Stuart Grim

• Plant when 4-inch soil temperatures are 65 degrees Fahrenheit and rising; warmer soil temps are preferred for faster germination and canopy closure.

• Avoid planting in very wet or waterlogged soil; seed rot and soil compaction are significant risks of planting in wet soils.

• Ideal grain sorghum planting depth is between 1 and 2 inches.

• In heavier soils, plant seed at 1 inch deep. In lighter, sandier soils, plant seed at a max of 2 inches deep.

• Seed to soil contact is very important! Monitor your

TIPS FOR ESTABLISHING A GOOD GRAIN SORGHUM STANDsoil conditions and planting equipment. Adjust or replace worn components to ensure good seed to soil contact.

• For no-till planting, adjust coulter down-pressure and depth for each field and residue situation. Make certain that coulters slice through the residue rather than pinning it in the furrow. Consider using attachments that sweep, brush, or move residue out of the furrow.

• Practice good weed control methods prior to and during the first 6 weeks after planting. Do your best to control weeds at the “white thread” stage.

Blue River Organic Seed is dedicated solely to organic seed and organic farming. We believe that maintaining high standards in organic seed products is mandatory and should be a priority for all organic agriculture suppliers.

We are proud of the fact that almost all our seed products are produced on certified organic fields. We will only sell conventional, un-treated seed when we have no viable alternative (these products are labeled as “CNV”).

Therefore, almost all products in this guide are certified organic! Unless a product is labeled with “CNV,” you can rest assured that it is certified organic.

USA Grown:Blue River Organic Seed bags have a designation that proudly distinguishes the emphasis Blue River plac-es on true, United States grown products. The label, which reads “USA Grown,” signifies that the Blue River seed in that bag was proudly grown in the soils of the United States. This is especially important given the concern of imports affecting United States organic markets over the past few years. Blue River wants our customers to feel confident that they are receiving the highest standard of USA Grown organic seed.

What is PuraMaize?PuraMaize is hybrid corn just like all Blue River corn varieties. However, it has one very important advantage: the PuraMaize gene blocking system. Developed through traditional selective breeding, the PuraMaize gene blocking system obstructs GMO corn cross pollination contamination. Simply put: PuraMaize prefers its own pollen over the pollen of neighboring corn hybrids that do not contain PuraMaize. If PuraMaize pollen is present during the pollination window, all non-PuraMaize pollen is rejected, including GMO, Gene Edited and CRISPR pollen.

Why is this important to growers? The PuraMaize line strengthens the ability of organic growers to continue to farm organically without worrying about pollen drift from their conventional neighbors’ corn fields. An added benefit is that organic growers will no longer have to delay planting - widening their window for corn grain production.

What is a Workhorse Hybrid? As you look through this product guide, you might have noticed the horseshoe symbol on specific hybrids. When selecting corn products for your organic operation, it is wise to diversify with more than just one or two hybrids. A minimum of three hybrids is best if you have the acres to justify the diversity. By doing so, you spread out your risk for a better outcome during those years with unforeseen adverse weather conditions. A phrase like “don’t put all your eggs in one basket” comes to mind when planning for each growing season. The horseshoe symbol tells you that this hybrid may not be the highest yielding hybrid on your farm when you have an ideal growing season and great soil conditions, but this WILL be the hybrid that yields and stands better than average under a less than ideal growing season.

• Plant when 4-inch soil temperatures are 55 degreesFahrenheit and rising; warmer soil temps arepreferred for faster germination and canopy closure.

• Avoid planting in very wet or waterlogged soil; seedrot and soil compaction are significant risks ofplanting in wet soils.

• Ideal soybean planting depth is 1 to 1.5 inchesdeep. Soybeans are very sensitive to planting depth.Deeper planting is not recommended.

• Seed to soil contact is very important! Monitor yoursoil conditions and planting equipment. Adjust orreplace worn components to ensure good seed tosoil contact.

• For no-till planting, adjust coulter down-pressureand depth for each field and residue situation.Make certain that coulters slice through the residuerather than pinning it in the furrow. Consider usingattachments that sweep, brush, or move residue outof the furrow.

• If your soil is prone to crusting and you have rainshortly after planting, utilize a rotary hoe or a similarimplement to break the crust so that your seed canemerge properly.

• Practice good weed control methods prior to andduring the first 6 weeks after planting. Do your bestto control weeds at the “white thread” stage.

• Tine weeding or rotary hoeing when it does not looklike you need it is never a waste of time!

• Conduct a soil test. Alfalfa is sensitive to low pH - ideal pH range for alfalfa establishment is 6.5 to 7.0.

• If liming is necessary, consider the length of time it will take for the lime to react in your soil. You may need to apply lime up to a year before you plan to seed.

• When establishing a stand, take advantage of your region’s “rainy” season.

• In northern states, spring seeding is preferred. If establishing in southern states, late summer or early fall seeding is better.

• In both cases, keep in mind that alfalfa is sensitive to a hard frost before it has developed a crown.

• Spring seeding should occur after the threat of a hard frost has passed and late-summer seeding should occur at least 6 weeks before the average killing frost date.

• Alfalfa grows best when treated with rhizobium inoculum, a bacterial inoculant that will help it establish and fix nitrogen in the soil.

• If soil crusting is expected shortly after seeding, utilize a rotary hoe or similar implement to break the crust on the soil so seedlings can break through.

FallDormancy 5

The “Fall Dormancy” and “Winter Survival” ratings are industry-wide, standardized ratings designed to help growers select an alfalfa variety that will yield well and survive the winter for their region.

Fall dormancy rating (FDR) is typically rated on a 1-11 scale, with the lowest number indicating the earliest onset of fall dormancy and the highest number indicating a complete lack of dormancy.

Winter survival rating (WSR) is typically rated on a 1-6 scale, with the lowest number indicating a very winter-hardy variety and the highest number indicating a variety that is not winter-hardy.

FDR has implications for fall production levels and spring green-up: the later a variety goes dormant (the higher the fall dormancy rating), the more biomass it will likely produce in the fall and the earlier it will green up in the spring.

Blue River alfalfa varieties are selected with cold winters in mind: all are rated at 1 or 2 on the WSR scale with a 4 or 5 on the FDR scale. This ensures the highest level of production for regions with cold winters while also ensuring overwintering capability.

Pheasant 6

BMR Sudangrass hybrid

BMR Sorghum and Sundangrass hybrids contain a chemical called “dhurrin.” This naturally occurring chemical is meant to “discourage” herbivores and insects from eating the foliage out in the wild! When the forage material is chopped, trampled, chewed, frozen, wilted, or otherwise damaged, the dhurrin is converted to prussic acid (HCN). If the levels of HCN are high enough in the forage, it can be dangerous to livestock.

High nitrate concentrations in sorghum or sudangrass forage is usually related to high N fertilization combined with stressful growing conditions (like drought.) High nitrate concentration can be detrimental to animal development and is especially dangerous when fed to pregnant or lactating animals.

In either case, both scenarios are easily avoided through appropriate grazing, harvest, or fertilization management of your sorghum or sudangrass forage hybrids. See our suggested tips to avoid high levels of both prussic acid and nitrates and you will enjoy high-quality forage from your BMR sorghum and sudangrass hybrids all summer long!

SHOULD I BE CONCERNED ABOUT PRUSSIC ACID OR NITRATES IN MY BMR SORGHUM FORAGE?

BMR SorghumSudangrass hybrid

• Younger tissues and leaves normally have higher concentrations of HCN than older tissues or stem materials.

• Feeding your BMR sorghum forage as green-chop is a great way to prevent selective foraging and to dilute the concentration of HCN throughout the feed.

• Do not cut or graze until forage reaches 18” to 24” (overall field height).

• Ideal harvest is approximately 45 to 55 days after planting.

• For best re-growth and to limit consumption of HCN compounds, leave 6” to 8” of stubble after cutting or grazing.

• Do not green-chop within 7 days of a killing frost.

• If harvesting for silage, wait one month before feeding and wait up to two months if the forage was harvested as immature material (shorter than 24 inches).

• Wait at least 4 days after a thorough rain to harvest drought-affected forage.

TIPS TO AVOID HIGH LEVELS OF PRUSSIC ACID AND NITRATES

Brown midrib forages have reduced lignin content throughout the plant. Lignin contributes to structural rigidity in the plant but is not digestible by livestock. This reduced lignin trait increases the digestibility and palatability of the forage leading to higher quality haylage, balage, and silage.

BMR Sorghums offer excellent forage during the heat of summer when other forage grasses are less productive. They handle heat and drought like champs!

While great standalone crops, they also serve as excellent late-plant options, emergency forage crops, or as smother/cover crops.

BROWN MIDRIB (BMR) SORGHUM FORAGES PROVIDE VALUE!

• Ideal BMR sorghum seeding depth is between 0.75 and 1.25 inches.

• Adjust or replace worn drill components to ensure good seed to soil contact.

• If your soil is prone to crusting and you have rain shortly after planting, utilize a rotary hoe or a similar implement to break the crust so that your seed can emerge properly.

• Practice good weed control methods prior to and during the first 6 weeks after planting. Do your best to control weeds at the “white thread” stage.

• Crimson clover is frequently planted as a summer annual in the north and a winter annual in the south. It can also be used as a winter-kill ground clover in the north.

• Seed at 1/4 to 1/2-inch depth in a firm, smooth seedbed. Seed no more than 3/4-inch depth in sandy soils.

• For pure crimson clover stands, use a seeding rate of 15 to 18 lbs/acre (if drilled) and 22 - 30 lbs/acre (if broadcast).

• Red clover is frequently used as a spring-seeded biennial in the north and a (late-summer seeded) winter annual in the south.

• Medium red clover can be cut once late in the seeding year and twice in the second year.

• Seed at 1/4-inch depth in a firm, smooth seedbed and up to 1/2-inch-deep in sandier soils.

• For pure red clover stands, use a seeding rate of 15 to 20 lbs/acre (if drilled) and 25 to 30 lbs/acre (if broadcast).

Medium maturity hybrid with high oleic acid and consistent oil contentExcellent stalk and root strength resulting in great standabilityResistant to Downy MildewExcellent emergence and drought tolerancePrimarily marketed as high oleic oilseed but can also be sold as high quality bird foodRecommended planting rate is 18,000 to 23,000 per acre

MediumMaturity

• Seed at 1 to 1 1/2 inches deep in moist or heavier soils and up to 3 inches deep in sandier, dry soils.

• Plant when four-inch soil temperatures are 55 degrees Fahrenheit and rising.

• If soil crusting is expected shortly after seeding, utilize a rotary hoe or similar implement to break crust or utilize the shallower planting depth.

• Row spacing is typically the same used for corn planting, 30- or 36-inch rows. This allows for better weed control and harvest.

• Narrower row spacing can encourage disease formation, especially in humid environments or regions with reliable and adequate rainfall.

• Recommended planting rate is 18,000 to 23,000 plants per acre, depending on available moisture and regional climate.

• Sunflowers are not particularly sensitive to seeding rates because the head size and seed number will increase in a thinner stand. Therefore, we recommend planting at a rate that is appropriate to your weed management plan and moisture conditions.

• If seed and head size is important to you, consider using the lower planting rate.

HORNET SUNFLOWER SEEDING AND GROWTH INFORMATION

• Clovers grow best when treated with rhizobium inoculum, a bacterial inoculant that will help them establish and fix nitrogen in the soil.

• In general, clovers will germinate poorly in waterlogged or extremely acidic or alkaline soils. Once established, they handle moist, cool locations and moderate acidity very well.

• If utilizing red clovers for inter-seeding with corn in between the rows, seed when corn is near the V6 stage.

• If over-seeding or broadcasting, whenever possible, incorporate clover seed with a harrow or utilize a roller to establish firm seed-to-soil contact.

• In the north, most clovers can be frost seeded (broadcast) in late winter with the expectation that freeze thaw action and spring rainfall will move seed into the soil.

• Seed no later than the first week of June in the north because heat and drought can drastically limit germination.

• If seeding crimson or red clover as a winter annual in the south, seed 6 to 8 weeks before the average first frost date for your region.

• If seeding clovers with cereal grains, reduce clover seeding rates to approx. 10 – 12 lbs/acre and 1.5 to 2 bu/acre of the cereal crop.

• If seeding clovers with annual ryegrass, reduce clover seeding rates to approximately 10 - 12 lbs/acre and 18 - 25 lbs/acre for the annual ryegrass.

• Grain sorghum seed size is important! Older planting rate recommendations used lbs/acre, but this can be misleading with small seed size.

• Smaller seeded grain sorghum will require fewer pounds per acre than larger seeded varieties.

• Soil fertility, soil texture, soil moisture, and seasonal rainfall will affect seeding rates.

• For poor to marginal soils or in areas where drought is a significant concern, use a lower final plant population (30,000 to 60,000)

• For fertile soils or in areas where moisture is not limiting, use a higher final plant population (70,000 to 100,000)

• For acreages under irrigation, use a higher final plant population (90,000 to 110,000)

Monitor your soil conditions and planting equipment. Adjust or

TIPS FOR ESTABLISHING A GOOD GRAIN SORGHUM STANDreplace worn components to ensure good seed to soil contact.
