Build a solid foundation for the LSU basketball program. Check. Recruit players that would work hard, play hard and be committed to the LSU program. Check. Change the mindset to believe in consistent winning. Check. Represent the University as coaches and players in a positive way both on and off the court. Check. Entering his third season as the head coach of the LSU Fighting Tiger basketball program, Coach Will Wade has been able to check all the boxes of program building that he set out to accomplish when he was named the 22nd head coach of the LSU program prior to the 2017-18 season. This past season, Coach Wade, his staff and players put together a team that posted a 16-2 record in the Southeastern Conference, winning the 11th regular season title in school history and going on to advance to the NCAA Sweet 16. But one sentence does not tell the story of the championship season, both on and off the court. How does a Coach and a team handle the worst possible tragedy, the death of a teammate? Not just a teammate, but a friend and a person known throughout the LSU community. Junior Wayde Sims was killed in the early morning of Sept. 28, just hours before what was to be the first team workout in preparation for the 2018-19 season. Coach Wade and athletic staff met early that morning with the team and began the long process of reflection and recovery. Coach Wade met with the media in a press conference later that morning that was televised live on many outlets including the SEC Network. He was honest and frank about the situation and thoughts and memories of Sims. His ability to get out in front of the ongoing situation answered many questions and stopped growing speculation about the death. The team dedicated the season to Wayde and his parents, which included former Tiger player Wayne Sims. Fingers showing Wayde’s 44 number were displayed prominently and Coach Wade’s mantra of “We’ll be playing with six” in reference to Wayde watching and being with the Tigers sure seemed to be prophetic. Time after time, the Tigers appeared to need a spark to stay alive for a win and things would turn around. LSU would go a perfect 9-0 in the league on the road, winning four overtime games and another at the buzzer. The Tigers would win 16 league games, one of their best overall 18-game league records. As good as the players were in November when the season started, the team showed improvement from start to finish and that was all due to Coach Wade and his staff and the work that was put in on the court, in the video room, in scouting reports and so much more. It was all part of the vision the coach has for the program. It’s a vision to have “unwavering commitment to put the team first, to put the state first, to put our school first to represent all of these folks in a first-class fashion. We are going to be a hard-working team that represents this great university that represents this great state.” Frank William “Will” Wade said those words on March 20, 2017 when he was named the head coach at LSU. He came to LSU after a stellar two-year stint as the head coach at Virginia Commonwealth University and two years at UT-Chattanooga. In two seasons at LSU, he is the first Tiger mentor to get the Tigers to post-season play in both of the first two seasons on the job. He’s been on the bench for 43 wins over two seasons and he is now one of just five LSU coaches to lead his team to an SEC Championship. Through the first two seasons, the Tigers under Wade have posted wins that excited the LSU fan base, another item that can be put on the positive check list for

the program. So far in two seasons, LSU under Wade has posted 16 wins in the Quadrant I rankings in the NCAA RPI/now NET rankings. After five in 2018, Wade’s Tigers posted 11 Q1 wins in 2019. That included at No. 4 NET ranked Kentucky, versus No. 9 Tennessee, No. 13 Auburn and at No. 21 Mississippi State. The Tigers also had the ability to win in so many different ways. In the final seconds (at Kentucky, versus Tennessee and Maryland) and on the road in overtime (at Arkansas, at Missouri, at Mississippi State, at Florida). The 2019 Tigers became the first LSU squad to go 9-0 in the league on the road and ended the year tied for the longest road win streak in the country. In two years, the Tigers have drawn four crowds that are in the top 12 single game attendances in the present seating configuration of the Pete Maravich Assembly Center. Fans are caring again about LSU basketball, not just because of wins, but because of what they have seen on the court. The fans have seen the things that Coach Wade promised when he took the job – an energized staff that was integrated in the game making coaching decisions and alterations as needed; player that were working hard to enact a game plan and making big plays. More than anything, LSU fans saw the advancement of returning players under Coach Wade and his staff and the way that the new player blended with the improved veterans. Wade, one of the younger coaches in Division I, who will turn 36 on Nov. 26, has also proven to be one of the most energetic both in practices and games, and his players have responded in kind. Wade has also brought analytics and trends to his coaching practices at LSU and his ability to know situations and tendencies has proven beneficial to the Tigers in his first two seasons.

PRIOR TO LSU The native of Nashville, Tennessee, directed VCU to a 51-20 record and two NCAA Tournament appearances in 2015-2016 and 2016-2017. The 2016 Rams advanced to the second round of the tournament, defeating seventh-seed Oregon State before losing to Oklahoma. Wade was the youngest head coach in the NCAA Tournament in 2016. In 2017, VCU lost to St. Mary’s in the first round of the NCAA tourney. Wade previously served at VCU as an assistant with the Rams under Shaka Smart from 2009-13. VCU was 113-37 during that time, reached three NCAA Tournament and won the 2012 Colonial Athletic Association Championship. He was part of the staff in 2011 when VCU advanced from the NCAA “First Four” all the way to the Final Four in Houston. Wade is credited with being a key figure in four top non-power five recruiting classes in his four seasons at VCU. Prior to becoming the head coach at VCU, Wade served as the head coach at Chattanooga for the 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons. His first Mocs squad went 18-15 in 2014, finishing 12-6 and second in regular season Southern Conference play. The 18 wins overall were the most by the program since 2008-09 and the 12 wins in league games was the

highest total since 2010-11. The team made the school’s first postseason appearance since 2009 in the CIT. Wade was honored with the Anton Foy Southern Conference Coach of the Year award for his efforts in 2014. The Mocs won 22 games in 2015 and finished 15-3 in the league as Wade guided Chattanooga to its first 20-win season since 2004-05. He finished his two seasons there at 40-25 and 27-7 in league play. In the two seasons prior to his arrival, Chattanooga was 24-40 overall and 13-23 in SoCon play. Wade was VCU Head Coach Shaka Smart’s first hire upon being named the head VCU coach in 2009. That reputation was cemented prior to his arrival on the VCU campus. He served as an assistant to Tommy Amaker at Harvard in 2007-08 and 2008-09. Much like at VCU, he was Amaker’s first hire. In their second year, the Crimson went 14-14, the first season of .500 or better in the program since 2001-02. Wade’s coaching start came at Clemson where he served as Director of Basketball Operations (2006-07) and Graduate Assistant (2005-06) after four seasons as a student manager (2002-05). There he worked for coaches Larry Shyatt (2002-03) and Oliver Purnell (2004-07). In eight years on coaching staffs at Clemson, Harvard and VCU, the teams had a record of 177-97 with six postseason appearances (2005-13). Wade is married to the former Lauren Deason, and the couple has one daughter, Caroline Elizabeth (2).

LAST GAME: LSU 109, NORTHWESTERN STATE 59 (Baton Rouge, 12/8/19) The Tigers topped 100 points for the third time under Coach Will Wade in LSU’s last game prior to final exams against Northwestern State. The 109 points topped the 105 the Tigers had against Samford in November 2017. Both of LSU’s previous 100 point games came in Coach Wade’s first season at LSU (2017-18). LSU continued to shoot well from the field, making 55.6 percent of their shots (40-72). It was the fourth straight game the Tigers were over 50 percent overall. LSU made 10 three-pointers, the second time this year LSU has been in double figures for three pointers. LSU has made 10 or more three-pointers 12 times in the Will Wade era with a 10-2 record. The Tigers had seven players in double figures with Javonte Smart getting 17 points, Darius Days and Emmitt Williams 16 points each (Williams 10 rebounds), Trendon Watford and Skylar Mays 14 each, James Bishop 11 and Aundre Hyatt 10. For Bishop and Hyatt, it was their first double figure scoring games of their LSU careers. It was the first time LSU had seven players in double figures since Nov. 12, 2011 when LSU had seven score 10 or more against Nicholls in a 96-74 win. LSU out rebounded the Demons, 47-25, and had 52 points in the paint.

INSIDE THE ARC Coach Wade has mentioned more than once in media sessions that the Tigers need to not settle with an out-side shot and go inside where the team has players shooting 60-plus percent from the field. The Northwestern State game (12/8) was the sixth time in the last seven games that LSU posted 60 percent or better inside the arc and two of those were over 70 percent:

LSU was 29-of-41 (12/3) against New Orleans inside the arc and 24-of-34 against Missouri State (11/29) in the two games the Tigers were over 70 percent inside the arc. Against the Privateers, to break it down further, LSU was 16/26 inside the restricted zone and 10/12 in the remainder of the paint area. LSU was 3-of-3 on the wings inside the arc. Breaking down the shots inside the arc against Missouri State, LSU was 12-of-16 inside the restricted zone, 5-of-9 in the remainder of the paint and 7-of-9 on the wings inside the arc. LSU is second in the nation in shooting inside the arc with a season percentage of 61.9 percent behind only Dayton at 65.9 percent. Utah is third at 61.3 percent and Auburn is fourth at 59.6 percent. Last year for the 2018-19 season, LSU was 52.9 percent inside the arc. Individually, LSU sophomore Darius Days is second in the NCAA in two-point field goal percentage at 85.0 percent (34-40). Colgate’s Tucker Richardson is the national leader at 86.7 percent. Second among SEC players is Isaac Okoro of Auburn at 73.2 percent.

OVERALL SHOOTING Even though LSU has continued to shoot the three-pointers (61-of-189), the Tigers as shown has had great success inside the arc and that has resulted in a field goal percentage through the first nine games of 51.7 percent (284-of-549). LSU is the only team in the league with a field goal percentage of over 50 percent (Mississippi State is 49.4%). Overall, LSU’s percentage is fifth best in the NCAA. The Tigers have gone over 50 percent from the field each of the last four games and six times already this season:

At VCU – 31-of-60 (51.7%)Nicholls – 28-of-56 (50.0%)Rhode Island – 38-of-70 (54.3%)Missouri State – 29-of-54 (53.7%)New Orleans – 34-of-62 (54.8%)Northwestern State – 40-of-72 (55.6%)

LSU is 5-1 this year when shooting 50 percent from the field and 12-3 in the Will Wade era at LSU. LSU has made 65 more field goals than opponents on 19 less attempts.

LAST YEAR PAINT POINTS BIG; STILL GOOD NUMBERS SO FAR Paint points were big last year for the Tigers as LSU had 40-or-more paint points on 17 occasions. According to ESPN Stats and Info that was the second most by any team in a power conference with the exception of Duke which did it 19 times. The Tigers topped 50 twice last year with 50 vs. No. 24 Furman and 58 at Mississippi State. That was last year with big men Naz Reid and Kavell Bigby-Williams handling things inside for the Tigers offense. LSU is a much different team without big post players but so far, paint points are looking good. LSU has had six games in its first nine with 40-plus points in the paint. LSU has topped last year with three games with over 50 points in the paint:

54 – vs. Rhode island (11/24)52 – vs. New Orleans (12/3)52 – vs. Northwestern State (12/8). The Tigers low was 24 in the first Jamaica game against Utah State (11/22).

AFTER NINE GAMES LSU is 7-2 for the second straight year after nine games entering this part of the season after the exam break. LSU was 6-3 after nine games in Will Wade’s first season, 2017-18.

SPEAKING OF NINE The Tigers have won nine consecutive games at home and will be looking to have a double digit win streak for the second consecutive year at the Maravich Assembly Center. LSU through the end of January 2019 had an 18-game winning streak (last 7 games 2017-18, first 11 games 2018-19), which tied for the second longest in the building’s history. Now after winning the last three games of the 2018-19 season, the Tigers won the first six at home this sea-son.

NON-CONFERENCE AT HOME LSU has won 15 straight non-conference games at home under Coach Will Wade dating back to a loss on Dec. 16, 2017 when LSU was beaten by Stephen F. Austin, 83-82 ... LSU was 8-0 at home in nonconference play last year. In the first 48 years of the Maravich Center, the Tigers have had undefeated nonconference seasons at home 19 times.

DARIUS DAYS Days started three games as a freshman. He has now started the first nine games of his sophomore season and has scored in double figures in each game this season. Days also got his first double double in the Nicholls game (11/16) with 17 points and 11 rebounds. It was so much fun, he did it again the very next game against UMBC (11/19) as he had 10 points and 10 rebounds. Against Missouri State (11/29), Days joined the 20-10 club, scoring 20 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Days was 7-of-13 from the field with two treys and 4-of-4 from the line. Days played just over 30 minutes and had a plus-minus rating of +25.

CAREER DOUBLE-DOUBLES

2019-2020 LSU MEN’S BASKETBALL

Page 6: 2019-2020 MEN’S BASKETBALL GAME NOTES FINAL FOUR

Days was +23 against New Orleans (12/3), hitting 5-of-8 field goals in getting his fourth double double of 12 points and 10 rebounds. Days is third on the team in scoring with a 14.2 scoring average and is the leader in rebounds at 8.2 a game. That is sixth in the SEC. He is overall 48-of-81 from the floor (59.3 percent) with 14 treys and that percentage is fourth in the league and 41st in the NCAA. The Raleigh, Florida native is tied for the team lead with 14 threes and is shooting 34.1 percent.

20-10 GAMES Days’ 20-10 game against Missouri State (11/29) was the fifth time that 20-10 had been recorded in the Will Wade era at LSU by four players – Duop Reath (2), Naz Reid and Aaron Epps. Since the start of the 2009-10 season, there have been 36 games of 20 points, 10 rebounds. A total of 32 play-ers have had at least three 20-10 games for LSU since the 1973-74 season.

EMMITT WILLIAMS Emmitt Williams knows what double double looks like having four last year and in his first start of the year against Nicholls (11/16), Williams recorded his fifth of his career with 11 points and 12 rebounds. He has had back-to-back doubles with 18 and 10 against New Orleans (12/3) and 16-10 against Northwestern State (12/8). Against the Demons, he was a perfect 6-of-6 from the field. Williams has had five games straight scoring in double figures including 27, a career night, against Rhode Island in Jamaica (11/24). Williams hit 12-of-17 field goals with a three and two free throws. He had nine rebounds in the contest. In the last four games, Williams is 32-of-43 from the field, 1-4 from the arc and 10-13 from the free throw line. He totaled 75 points in those four contests (18.7 points per game). Williams and Darius Days are part of LSU’s Florida connection as both are sophomores and both are from Florida. Days is from Raleigh and Williams from Fort Myers. Williams is second on the team in scoring at 15.4 points per game (12th in the SEC) and second on the team in rebounds at 7.9 boards a game (also with Days in the top 10 in the league at seventh). Williams is shooting 67.5 percent from the floor (54-80) and that is second in the league and No. 10 in the NCAA. Williams has shown a court savvy this year and he has improved after averaging 7.0 points and 5.4 rebounds a game last year. One of Williams’ strengths this year has come at the foul line where he is 28-of-35 (80%), up from last year when he was 59-of-86 (68.6%). He is 11th in the SEC free throw leaders.

TRENDON WATFORD A lot of eyes have been on the five-star recruit Trendon Watford of Birmingham, Alabama, who signed with the Tigers last May from Mountain Brooke High School in Birmingham, Alabama. Nine games in, he has eight games scoring in double figures and against UMBC (11/19) he posted his first col-lege double double of 12 points and 12 rebounds. He posted his season high of 18 points on 6-of-12 shooting with two treys against New Orleans (12/3). Watford is averaging 13.1 points per game and 5.8 rebounds a game. He is shooting 50.6 percent from the field (43-85) with seven treys. Watford did not start the game against New Orleans (12/3) because of an expected matchup situation the team had been practicing for but returned to the lineup against Northwestern State (12/8). Watford led Mountain Brook to three consecutive Class 7A state championships (2017, 2018, 2019) and aver-aged 23.7 points, 11.8 rebounds and 3.6 assists during his senior season. He finished his career in the top 10 in scoring in AHSAA history and set an AHSAA record with 1,909 career rebounds. He played in both the McDonald’s All-America game and the Jordan Brands Classic. Watford was on the Karl Malone watch list in the preseason.

LSU’S BAYOU BACKCOURT LSU’s Baton Rouge backcourt – sophomore Javonte Smart and senior Skylar Mays – has done what they needed to do in many areas on the court since they have been a part of the team, whether it is offensively scoring or passing. After nine games, Mays is leading the team with a 16.0 points per game and Smart is at 10.9 points. Mays’ scoring average is presently ninth in the league. The pair has combined for 72 assists with Smart dishing out at a 5.00 clip and Mays at 3.00. Smart’s assist total has been topped by 6 vs. Rhode Island (11/22), 9 vs. Missouri State (11/29) and 8 vs. New Orleans (12.3). But more importantly Smart’s assist to turnover numbers have improved dramatically. In the first three games of the season Smart had 13 assists but 17 turnovers. In the last three games, Smart has had 20 assists and just three turnovers. For the season, he now has 45 assists and 29 turnovers. He is sixth in the league in assist average and 56th in the NCAA. Mays has been good from the field in the first nine games, hitting 51-of-92 (55.4%), which is sixth in the league. He has made 14-of-35 (40%) from the arc and he is 28-of-32 from the free throw line (87.5%), sixth in the league and 61st in the NCAA. Mays seven games in double figures topped by 23 at VCU (11/13) and in Jamaica hit five treys and 10-of-13 field goals in a career best 30-point night against Utah State (11/22). He had 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting against Northwestern State (12/8). Smart had 21 in the opener against Bowling Green (11/8) and has five double figure games with 12 against New Orleans (12/3) and 17 against Northwestern State (12/8). Coach Wade early in the preseason said he wanted his guards to be involved in defensive rebounds and after nine games, Mays is averaging 5.2 boards a game and Smart 3.9. Smart has proven to be the heir apparent at point guard for Tremont Waters, who set LSU’s single season steals record a year ago and provided a lot of “wow” plays both offensively and defensively the last two years. Waters is off to life between the NBA and the G-League after being selected in the second round of the NBA Draft by the Boston Celtics. Smart and Mays both have their strengths and ability to make “wow” plays. Smart can make the three and make the pass and Mays can draw the fouls and his drive to the bucket with a finesse that makes defenders unable to keep up. Mays also is an academic star at LSU, having earned first-team Academic All-America honors from CoSIDA and the scholar-athlete for the league in men’s basketball last year. He also has gotten recognition from the league coaches as first-team All-SEC preseason selection.

Mays averaged 13.4 points and 2.1 assists last year and he is the leading returning scorer on the LSU team. Smart averaged 11.1 points a game and 2.4 assists last season. He showed his ability at the point, filling in for the injured Waters against No. 5 Tennessee when he scored 29 points in the February meeting. Mays needs five more assists to be top 30 in career scoring and top 10 in LSU career assists and steals.

MAYS ON OSCAR ROBERTSON LIST The United States Basketball Writers Association has announced its first watch list of 46 players for the Oscar Robertson Player of the Year award and senior Skylar Mays is on the list announced on early in December.

MARLON TAYLOR Taylor started 24-of-35 games a year ago, averaging 6.7 points per game and 3.6 rebounds. Taylor was the one with athletic, high-flying dunks that earned him a spot of couple of times on ESPN’s Top 10 plays on SportsCenter. Taylor has yet to dress for a game, but after summer surgery and another minor cleanup surgery in November, Taylor has been able to practice in the week before this game and is listed as possible to see his first action against ETSU. He has been seen on court with a coach prior to LSU’s last two games going through some shooting drills prior to the opening of crowd gates.

CHARLES MANNING, JR. It was after the exhibition tour of Spain in August that Coach Will Wade noted the good play of Charles Manning, Jr., in his first year at LSU after coming here from Florida SouthWestern State where he was named a third team NJCAA All-America after the 2018-19 season. The 6-5 guard averaged 9.7 points and 3.0 rebounds in the four games in Madrid, Valencia and Barcelona. Manning started the first two games of the season and had 10 points on 3-of-5 shooting and a three-pointer in the game at VCU (11/13). His best scoring came against UMBC (11/19) with 16 points on 6-of-8 shooting, 1-of-2 three-pointers and 3-of-4 at the line. He also had three rebounds and a steal in 22 minutes. He started based on matchups against New Orleans (12/3) and played 22 minutes, hitting 6-of-8 field goals in a 13 points, two assists, three block night. Manning is averaging 8.4 points and 3.9 rebounds through his first nine games. He is averaging 1.33 blocks per game.

JAMES BISHOP James Bishop got his first college points at VCU (11/13) scoring four points on 2-of-3 shooting in seven min-utes. He followed that up with nine points on 3-of-5 shooting and four assists in 19 minutes against UMBC (11/19). His first double figure scoring game came in the Northwestern State game (12/8) when he played a season high 22 minutes, hitting 4-of-7 field goals, including a three and two field goals, to score 11 points. Through the first nine games, playing primarily as the backup point guard, Bishop has averaged 3.7 points with five assists. Bishop is a freshman from Baltimore, Maryland.

AUNDRE HYATT When Aundre Hyatt made a three-pointer against New Orleans there was an outbreak of cheering from the LSU bench. Hyatt had scored a field goal in the opener against Bowling Green (11/8), but since then had been unable to tally until he hit his first college three versus the Privateers. Against Northwestern State (12/8), Hyatt hit two treys and had his first college double figure game of 10 points. After six games of not hitting a field goal, he was 4-of-10 overall and 3-of-9 at the arc in the last two games com-bined. Hyatt has come back nicely from a leg injury suffered late in the third of the four Spanish exhibitions in August. He continues to wear a knee brace for stability, but has averaged just over 10 minutes a game for the Tigers, averaging 1.7 rebounds a game.

NEW YORK CONNECTION While LSU has the Bayou Connection of Baton Rouge guards in Javonte Smart and Skylar Mays and its Florida guys in Darius Day and Emmitt Williams, Charles Manning, Aundre Hyatt and Marlon Taylor bring a “New York Connection” to the team. Manning is a junior college transfer who hails from Riverhead, New York, while Hyatt is a redshirt freshman that came to Baton Rouge from the Bronx, New York and Marlon Taylor is a senior who played on last year’s SEC Championship team from Mount Vernon, New York. Both Manning and Hyatt have made their debuts this season while the Tigers are still waiting for Marlon Taylor’s 2019-20 debut.

RETURNING NUMBERS Despite the top two scorers from last year being gone and three of the five, the Tigers are returning 54.3% of their scoring from last season, 48.7% of the rebound numbers and 44.5% of the assists. So far this season, returning players have posted 516 of LSU’s 768 points (67.2 percent) and 230 of LSU’s 321 rebounds (62.5 percent).

REBOUNDING LSU is averaging 40.89 rebounds a game, which is third in the league and No. 32 in the country. The Tigers are fourth in opponents rebounding at 31.4 a game. LSU’s rebound margin of 9.4 is third in the league and No. 15 in the country. LSU is fourth in offensive rebound percentage at 36.0. LSU has pulled down 104 offensive rebounds compared to opponents 185 defensive rebounds. The percentage is figured by taking the offensive rebounds and dividing by the total rebounding opportunities.

WE HAVE TO TALK TURNOVERS Well, we don’t have to talk about them as much as we were in the beginning of the season. In the first five games of the season, LSU averaged 19.6 turnovers a contest with a high of 26 and a low of 15 in those games.
