ABOUT UTAH VALLEY The Wolverines will enter the weekend with a 1-1 dual record after splitting a pair of contests at the Journeymen Northeast Duals two weeks ago. Utah Valley won nine of the 10 bouts en route to a 40-3 victory over Sacred Heart, before falling to Big Ten foe Purdue, 30-12. UVU is currently ranked 16th in the InterMat Tournament Rankings, 18th by FloWrestling, 20th by Win Magazine, 27th by TrackWrestling, and just outside of the latest NWCA Top 25 Coaches Poll.

UVU then took part in the Journeymen Collegiate Classic the following day and sophomore heavyweight Tate Orndorff led the way by winning the 285A title. The then 10th-ranked Orndorff went a perfect 3-0 with a pair of upset wins over No. 2 Tanner Hall of Arizona State and No. 3 Jordan Wood of Lehigh. After the big weekend, Orndorff earned Big 12 Conference Wrestler of the Week honors as well both USA Wrestling and The Open Mat National Wrestler of the Week accolades. He also moved up to as high as No. 3 in the national rankings, making him the highest ranked Wolverine in program history.

A total of five Wolverines will enter this weekend’s dual currently nationally ranked. Tate Or-ndorff leads the way by checking in at No. 3 at heavyweight, while senior Demetrius Romero is No. 6 at 165, junior Matt Findlay is No. 9 at 149, senior Kimball Bastian is No. 13 at 174, and senior Tanner Orndorff is No. 19 at 184. Tate Orndorff leads the group with a perfect 5-0 record on the young season. The rankings listed are the highest ranking taken from the latest InterMat, FloWrestling, TrackWrestling, The Open Mat, and Win Magazine polls.

ABOUT THE COMPETITION South Dakota State will come to town with an 0-1 record on the young season after falling to Binghamton last week by a score of 25-16. The Jackrabbits went 3-10 overall a season ago and 2-7 in Big 12 Conference action. One of their victories, however, included a 26-16 win over UVU in Brookings last January.

SDSU currently has a trio of wrestlers ranked in the current polls with redshirt freshman Tan-ner Sloan ranked fourth at 197, senior Henry Pohlmeyer ranked 16h at 149, and senior Zach Carlson ranked 19th at 184. Pohlmeyer is a two-time NCAA qualifier for the Jacks, while Sloan is off to a perfect 3-0 start on the season after winning a Daktronics Open title last week.

Friday’s contest will mark the 15th all-time meeting between UVU and SDSU. The Wolverines will enter the dual with an 8-6 series advantage despite having dropped each of the last five meetings.

The fourth-ranked Badgers will come to town with a perfect 5-0 record on the year after going 3-0 at the Battle on the Midway in San Diego on Nov. 1 with wins over Fresno State, Army and Navy, as well as defeating both Buffalo and Edinboro the following weekend. Wisconsin went 9-6 in 2018-19, 3-6 in Big Ten action, and placed 21st at the 2019 NCAA Championships.

The Badgers return a pair of 2019 All-Americans this season in 165-pounder Evan Wick and heavyweight Trent Hillger, and currently have five grapplers nationally ranked. South Dakota State transfer and 2018 National Champion Seth Gross leads the way as he’s the nation’s top-ranked wrestler at 133, while Wick (165) and Hillger (285) are both ranked second. Tristan Moran is ranked as high as No. 6 at 141, while Cole Martin rounds out UW’s ranked grapplers by checking in at No. 13 at 149. Gross will enter Saturday’s dual off of an impressive showing last weekend in freestyle action by knocking off a trio of fellow former national champions en route to winning the Bill Farrell Memorial Open at 57 kg. Gross picked up wins over Nick Suriano (2019 NCAA champ from Rutgers), Darian Cruz (2017 NCAA champ from Lehigh) and Nathan Tomasello (2015 NCAA champ from Ohio State) on his way to qualifying for the 2020 U.S. Olympic Trials in April.

Saturday’s dual will mark the fourth all-time meeting between UVU and UW. Wisconsin holds a perfect 3-0 series advantage after pulling out a hard fought 22-17 win in Madison last November. In a dual that came down to the final match at heavyweight, Hillger managed to pull out a controversial overtime bout over Tate Orndorff to lock up the victory for the Badgers.

POTENTIAL MARQUEE MATCHES With Tanner Orndorff slated to bump back up to 197 pounds this weekend, Friday’s dual against SDSU looks to pit the three-time NCAA qualifier and 19th-ranked Wolverine senior against fourth-ranked freshman Tanner Sloan of South Dakota State.

Then on Saturday, 2018 UVU NCAA qualifier and seven-time age-group Greco-Roman World Team member Taylor LaMont will look to dethrone the 2018 national champion and top-ranked Seth Gross at 133 pounds, while No. 3 Tate Orndorff will look for revenge against 2019 All-American and second-ranked Trent Hillger at heavyweight.

ROMERO SIDELINED IN 2019-20 Senior 165-pounder Demetrius Romero has announced that he will miss the remainder of the 2019-20 season due to injury. The two-time NCAA qualifier for the Wolverines is currently ranked as high as No. 6 in the nation at 165 pounds and became UVU’s first-ever Big 12 champion as well as reached the ‘Blood Round’ at the NCAA Championships this past March. Romero was off to a 2-0 start on the 2019-20 campaign but will now look to get a medical waiver and be back for his senior year next season.

WELCOME TO THE TOP 25 After spending a program record of 10 consecutive weeks in the NWCA Top 25 Coaches Poll last season, UVU will enter the week just outside of the NWCA Top 25 Coaches Poll. The Wolverines will also enter the week ranked 16th in the InterMat Tournament Rankings, 18th by FloWrestling, 20th by Win Magazine, and 27th by TrackWrestling. Utah Valley spent a week last season ranked 21st, which marks the highest NWCA ranking in program history.

OLYMPIC REDSHIRT NO MORE After previously declaring that he would take an Olympic redshirt and miss the 2019-20 sea-son, junior 133-pounder Taylor LaMont has since decided to return to action and will wrestle the 2019-20 season for the Wolverines. LaMont was sidelined in 2018-19 with an injury, but previously posted a 27-5 record as a freshman in 2017-18. That season he reached the ‘Blood Round’ at the NCAA Championships, became UVU’s first Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational champion, and earned the Wolverines’ highest national seed at the NCAA Championships by entering nationals as the No. 7 seed.

U23 WORLD GRECO CHAMPIONSHIPS A pair of Utah Valley wrestlers in Taylor LaMont and Tate Orndorff qualified for and represent-ed Team USA at the U23 World Greco-Roman Championships on Oct. 28-Nov. 3 in Budapest, Hungary. The appearance marked LaMont's seventh consecutive age-group World Champion-ships after competing at the Cadel level from 2013-15 and the Junior level from 2016-18. Orndorff led the way by going 1-1 while LaMont finished with an 0-1 showing. LaMont is a former Junior World bronze medalist after winning the bronze in 2016.

UVU RETURNS FIVE NCAA QUALIFIERS UVU welcomes back five of its program-record six NCAA qualifiers this season in now 149-pounder Matt Findlay, two-time qualifier Demetrius Romero (165), two-time qualifier Kimball Bastian (174), three-time qualifier Tanner Orndorff (now 184), and heavyweight Tate Orndorff. Romero, Bastian and Tanner Orndorff are all seniors for UVU this season, while Findlay is a junior and Tate Orndorff is a sophomore. Romero led the group by going 28-5 in 2018-19, while Tate Orndorff went 26-9, Tanner Orndorff 20-14, Bastian 19-13 and Findlay 17-4. Both Findlay and Romero reached the 'Blood Round' at the 2019 NCAA Championships.

2018-19 SEASON RECAP UVU has had a very successful season in which it spent a program record 10 consecutive weeks nationally ranked in the NWCA Top 25 Coaches Poll and sent a program-record six qualifiers to the NCAA Championships. After knocking off both No. 15 Rutgers and No. 13 Pur-due of the Big Ten Conference early in the season, the Wolverines found themselves ranked as high as No. 21 in the nation. After suffering a number of key injuries down the stretch, UVU then finished the regular season with a 10-14 overall record and posted a 1-8 mark in Big 12 duals. UVU alos crowned its first Big 12 Champion in program history last year in Demetrius Romero, as well as a record finish at the NCAA Championships by tying for 29th.

KEEPING IT IN THE FAMILY UVU doesn't have just one set of brothers, or two sets, but has a total of three sets of brothers on its roster this season. Senior Tanner Orndorff (184) and sophomore Tate Orndorff (285) make up one set, while senior Grant LaMont (157) and junior Taylor LaMont (133) make up another, and redshirt freshman Will Edelblute (125) and freshman Sam Edelblute (133) make up the third. Freshman RJ Bingham is also the nephew of UVU assistant coaches Ethen and Luke Lofthouse.

THIS IS (NOW) BIG 12 COUNTRY Following a nine-year stint in the Western Wrestling Conference, the Wolverines now call the Big 12 Conference home for the sport of wrestling. UVU, along with all five of its fellow former WWC member institutions, were officially added as affiliate members to the Big 12 on July 29, 2015. The new-look Big 12 now consists of core members Iowa State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and West Virginia, as well as affiliates Utah Valley, Air Force, North Dakota State, Northern Colorado, South Dakota State and Wyoming, as well as 2017-18 newcomers Fresno State and Northern Iowa. The move is unprecedented for Utah Valley, as it was not only an NCAA Division I Independent just 15 years ago, but also its entire athletics department competed at the Junior College level (NJCAA) until the 2003-04 campaign.

ABOUT UTAH VALLEY'S NCAA HISTORY Until 2003, Utah Valley University competed as a NJCAA athletic program. The 2003-04 season was the school’s first competing at the NCAA Division I level and also marked the first season that it added a wrestling program. In the summer of 2009, UVU’s provisional status was lifted and the program became a full member of NCAA Division I on July 8, 2009. Until then, UVU teams and individuals were not eligible to compete in NCAA championship events. After three seasons as a Division I Independent (2003-06), the Wolverine wrestling team spent nine years in the Western Wrestling Conference (2006-15) before joining the Big 12 Conference as an affiliate member in July of 2015. UVU also became a university in 2008, changing its name from Utah Valley State College (UVSC) to Utah Valley University (UVU).

Entering his 14th year of coaching at the helm of Utah Valley University wrestling, head coach Greg Williams has guided his Wolverines from a Division I Independent to a member of the Big 12 Conference during his tenure. Williams has also sent at least one Wolverine grappler to the NCAA Championships in each of the past 10 seasons. He has also coached a pair of All-Americans during his career -- in se-nior 125-pounder Benjamin Kjar (placed fourth) in 2011 and senior 133-pounder Jade Rauser (placed eighth) in 2016 -- and took a program best six NCAA quali-

fiers to nationals just last season. After spending nine seasons of competition as a member of the Western Wrestling Con-ference, Williams helped his team get into one of the most prestigious conferences in the nation in the Big 12 Conference in the summer of 2015. His Wolverines are one of eight wrestling affiliates to join the Big 12 in the sport of wrestling for the 2015-16 season, as they along with Air Force, Fresno State, Northern Colorado, Northern Iowa, North Dakota State, South Dakota State and Wyoming all now call the Big 12 home.

In arguably the program's best season of competition, Williams helped his Wolverines spend a school record of 10 consecutive weeks in the NWCA Top 25 Coaches Poll in 2018-19 as well as send a program record six grapplers to the 2019 NCAA Champion-ships. Williams also helped his Wolverines earn their highest NWCA Top 25 Coaches Poll ranking in program history by being ranked as high as No. 21 after knocking off both No. 13 Purdue and No. 15 Rutgers early in the season. Williams also helped lead a total of six of his wrestlers land a spot into the individual national rankings on the season, as well as helped crown the program's inaugural Big 12 champion in 165-pounder Demetrius Romero and guide a program record of five grapplers to podium finishes at the Big 12 Championships. After suffering a number of key injuries during the second half of season, UVU finished with a 10-14 overall record and a 1-8 Big 12 clip in 2018-19.

In 2017-18, he led his Wolverines to a very successful season in which his team compiled an 8-6 overall record and tied for fifth in the Big 12 standings with a 4-4 conference dual record. He also took a program-best five grapplers to nationals and helped Utah Valley break into the USA Today/NWCA Top 25 Coaches Poll for the first time in program history as the team debuted at No. 25 in early February. Williams also coached UVU's first-ever Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational champion and the program's first top-ranked wrestler in the nation in Taylor LaMont in the RPI. Along with holding down the No. 1 ranking in the country in the RPI, LaMont also reached as high as No. 6 in the national polls at 125 pounds and entered the NCAA Championships as the highest seeded wrestler in history at No. 7.

In 2016-17, Williams led his Wolverines to a 5-6 record and a 2-3 clip in Big 12 action. That season, UVU managed to take down a pair of ranked foes in No. 23 North Dakota State in Fargo as well as No. 23 Oregon State of the Pac-12 at home. The Wolverines went on to receive votes for the USA Today/NWCA Caoches Poll for just the second time in program history and sent a pair of grapplers to nationals.

During Utah Valley's inaugural year of competition in the Big 12, Williams helped his Wolverines pick up a 20-19 upset win at No. 18 Oregon State en route to receiving the program's first-ever votes for the top 25 poll. He also helped five Wolverine grapplers earn a spot on the podium at the 2016 Big 12 Championship, with two advancing on to the 2016 NCAA Championships and Jade Rauser earning All-American honors. After taking a program-record at the time of four grapplers to nationals in 2014, Williams followed that up by sending three in 2015 and two more in 2016. One of his two 2016 qualifiers was Jade Rauser, who not only earned All-American honors that season, but also became the school’s first-ever four-time NCAA qualifier. In all, Williams has coached 32 NCAA qualifiers, two All-Americans, seven conference champions, and a total of 27 NWCA Academic All-Americans since UVU became a full NCAA Division I member prior to the 2009-10 campaign. He has also helped his team land a spot on the NWCA Division I Top 30 Scholar All-American Teams list 10 times over the past 11 seasons. Williams also helped coach the program's inaugural NCAA Elite 90 Award recipient in 2018-19 in Matt Findlay, who held the highest cumulative GPA of any

of the 330 participants in the 2019 NCAA Championships with a 3.94 GPA while studying biology and minoring in Russian. In 2009-10, Williams had his most successful year when he led his team to a 10-3 overall record and a second-place conference finish with a 4-1 WWC record. That year he also coached UVU's first-ever NCAA Division I qualifiers as three Wolverine wrestlers punched their tickets to the NCAA Championships. That same season Williams also picked up Utah Valley wrestling's inaugural victory over a nationally-ranked program when his Wolverines upset the then eighth-ranked Boise State Broncos at home by a score of 22-20. In 2008-09, Williams coached his Wolverines to a school-record in victories with an 11-3 clip. Williams' Utah Valley grapplers also posted a 4-1 record in the Western Wrestling Conference that season as well. In Williams' 13 seasons of coaching at UVU, he has a tallied an overall record of 88-101. In his first season of coaching at Utah Valley (2006-07), he posted a 6-12 record and his squad finished at 9-11 in 2007-08 and also picked up the Wolverines’ first Western Wrestling Conference dual victory with a 39-4 win over South Dakota State. In 2010-11, 2011-12 and 2012-13, Williams respectively led his Wolverines to a 5-4, 6-10 and 6-4 records. He also helped his squad’s post a 6-9 tally in 2013-14 ago (2013-14), a 2-9 clip in 2014-15 and a 4-10 record in 2015-16.

Williams is the second coach in Utah Valley's short history, as the institution added the sport of wrestling prior to its first season of NCAA Division I competition, 2003-04. Williams brings over 20 years of coaching experience to UVU, including 13 years as the owner and coach of the Elite Wrestling Club prior coming to Utah Valley. He is a 14-time coach of the Utah National Wrestling Team and during his coaching career has tutored over 70 high school All-Americans. Williams' pupils include former UVU assistant coach, Justin Ruiz, who was previously the No. 1 ranked Greco wrestler at 211 lbs. Ruiz was a two-time All-American at Nebraska and a bronze medalist at 2005 World Championships. He began his coaching career at Sky View High School in Smithfield, Utah, where he led the school to an 87-8 record. Williams, a native of San Diego, California, graduated from University High School in 1979 where he was a California State Champion. From there, he moved on to Utah State University in Logan, Utah, where he was an All-American wrestler and a three-time NCAA qualifier for the Aggies. Williams graduated from Utah State in 1985 with a degree in Marketing Education. He and his wife Kristin have two children, Alexis and Taylor.
