2019-20 MAVERICKS NOTES … Statistical research assistance provided by the Elias Sports Bureau, STATS LLC, Basketball-Reference.com, NBA.com/Stats, ESPN LUKA’S 20-5-5 STREAK: Mavericks second-year guard Luka Dončić recorded a streak of 20 consecutive games with at least 20 points, five rebounds and five assists from 11/1-12/12/19, before seeing that run come to an end after suffering a right ankle sprain less than 2 minutes into the game vs. Miami on 12/14/19. The 20-game run by the 20-year-old is the longest such streak since the ABA/NBA merger (1976-77). In fact, the five next longest streaks since the merger were all achieved by players 26-or-older – by Michael Jordan at age 26, Russell Westbrook at ages 26, 28 and 29, and LeBron James at age 33. What’s more, Oscar Robertson (twice) is the only other player in NBA history to produce a 20-5-5 streak of 20-or-more consecutive games. Robertson had a 25-game run from ages 24 to 25 in 1963-64. “The Big O” also had a 29-game run from ages 25 to 26 in 1964-65, which stands as the longest 20-5-5 streak in NBA history.

DONČIĆ’S TRIPLE-DOUBLES: Mavericks second-year guard Luka Dončić, who doesn’t turn 21 until 2/28/20, already owns the record for the most triple-doubles by a player before his 21st birthday in NBA history (16). He recorded eight as a rookie alone, breaking Magic Johnson’s previous such record of seven, which was set before the Mavericks franchise was even formed in 1980 (Johnson’s record had stood since 3/30/80). Dončić’s eight triple-doubles in 2018-19 not only marked a Dallas rookie record (previous most: 4 by Jason Kidd in 1994-95), but also represented the third-most by any rookie in the history of the league (behind Oscar Robertson’s 26 in 1960-61 and Ben Simmons’ 12 in 2017-18). His eight triple-doubles last year were also one off of Jason Kidd’s record for the most by a Maverick in any one season in franchise history (Kidd had 9 as a second-year player for Dallas in 1995-96). Kidd holds the team-record for most triple-doubles with 21. After earning NBA Rookie of the Year honors in 2018-19, Dončić has picked up right where he left off last season. The 6-7 Slovenian has recorded eight triple-doubles in 2019-20, including two 40-point triple-doubles, six 30-point triple-doubles and eight 20-point triple-doubles. He became the first player in NBA history to record multiple 40-point triple-doubles before his 21st birthday after he went for 42 points, 11 rebounds and 12 assists vs. San Antonio on 11/18/19 & 41 points, 12 boards and 11 helpers at Detroit in Mexico City on 12/12/19. LeBron James (once) is the only other player in league history to record a 40-point triple-double before turning 21 years old. What’s more, no Maverick had ever produced a 40-point triple-double prior to Dončić. In addition to being the only Maverick to register a 40-point triple-double, Dončić also owns franchise marks for 30-point triple-doubles (7) and 20-point triple-doubles (14). His seven career 30-point triple-doubles are the most by a player before his 21st birthday in NBA history. In fact, James (2) is the only other player to produce multiple 30-point triple-doubles before turning 21. In addition to posting 16 career triple-doubles, Dončić has also finished either one rebound or one assist shy of a triple-double seven times in his career.

It marked a new individual scoring record for an NBA regular-season game played in Mexico City. The previous record was held by Devin Booker, who had 39 points in both of the games the Suns played in Mexico City in 2016-17 (39 vs. Dallas 1/12/17, 39 vs. San Antonio 1/14/17). Dončić’s 41-point, 12-rebound, 11-assist effort also marked the first triple-double ever recorded in a regular-season contest played in Mexico City. His 33:39 were the second-fewest minutes needed to record a 40-point triple-double in the past 35-plus seasons. James Harden (43 points/10 rebounds/12 assists in 29:34 vs. Cleveland 1/11/19) is the only player to produce a 40-point triple-double in fewer minutes since 1983-84. The matchup between the Mavericks and Pistons on 12/12/19 marked the 29th game in Mexico since 1992, the most NBA games held in any country outside the United States and Canada. The game took place in front of a sellout crowd of 20,064 at Arena Ciudad de Mexico (it was the league’s 4th straight sellout in Mexico City). It was also the seventh game Dallas played in Mexico (third regular-season contest), more than any other NBA team. With the win, the Mavericks improved to 2-1 all-time in regular-season games played in Mexico City. Houston defeated Dallas 108-106 in Mexico City on 12/6/97, in what was the first NBA regular-season game held in Latin America. The Mavericks beat the Suns 113-108 in Mexico City on 1/12/17.

DONČIĆ WINS SPORTS ILLUSTRATED BREAKOUT OF THE YEAR AWARD: Mavericks second-year guard Luka Dončić was named Sports Illustrated's 2019 Breakout of the Year at SI’s Spokesperson of the Year event held in December 2019. According to SI, the award recognizes “spirit of achievement and arrival.” It’s given to a player who experiences significant growth from one season to the next. Honorees in recent years include New Orleans Saints running back Alvin Kamara, Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid and Cleveland Indians shortstop Francisco Lindor. LUKA AMONG NBA LEAGUE LEADERS: Mavericks second-year guard Luka Dončić is averaging team highs of 29.3 points, 9.6 rebounds and 8.9 assists per game this season. Among NBA leaders, he ranks third in scoring, 17th in rebounding and third in assists. Dončić scored at least 20 points in 23 of his first 24 games this season, before suffering a right ankle sprain less than 2 minutes into the game against the Heat on 12/14/19. In 25 games this year, he has tallied 25-plus points 20 times, 30-plus 12 times and 40-plus on four occasions. He has also recorded a league-high eight triple-doubles, including six 30-point triple-doubles and two 40-point triple-doubles. MAVS RECORD THIRD 40-POINT WIN IN 2019-20: After defeating Golden State by 48 (142-94) on 11/20/19, Dallas beat Cleveland by 42 (143-101) on 11/22/19 and New Orleans by 46 (130-84) on 12/7/19. It marked the first time in franchise history that the Mavericks won three games by 40-or-more points in a single season. Prior to 2019-20, the franchise record for most 40-point wins in a season was two (Dallas had 2 40-point victories in both 1984-85 and 1988-89). In fact, three of the team’s 10 biggest wins in team history have come this season. The Mavericks’ 48-point victory over the Warriors on 11/20/19 is their fifth-largest, while their 46-point win over the Pelicans on 12/7/19 is their sixth-largest, and their 42-point victory over the Cavaliers on 11/22/19 is their 10th-biggest.

MAVS WIN 10-OF-11 FOR FIRST TIME SINCE ’10-11: The Mavericks won 10-of-11 games from 11/16-12/7/19. It marked the first time they won 10-of-11 since their championship season in 2010-11. That year, Dallas won 17-of-18 from 11/20-12/27/10, 11-of-12 from 1/19-2/9/11 and 18-of-19 from 1/22-3/4/11. Over the 11-game stretch (11/16-12/7/19), the Mavericks averaged 122.8 points (.478 FG%, .382 3FG%, .799 FT%) and 15.7 3-pointers per game. They held their opponents to 104.7 points on 42.4 percent shooting (.313 3FG%) in that span.

DALLAS RECORDS SECOND 5-GAME WIN STREAK IN 2019-20: After winning five in a row from 11/16-11/24/19, the Mavericks rattled off another five straight wins from 11/29-12/7/19. Prior to recording two five-game win streaks within a span of 11 games in 2019-20, the Mavericks hadn’t won five consecutive games since 2015-16 (Dallas had a 6-game win streak from 3/28-4/8/16). During their first five-game win streak from 11/16-11/24/19, the Mavericks defeated Toronto (11/16/19), San Antonio (11/18/19), Golden State (11/20/19) and Houston (11/24/19), and won those games by an average margin of 23.8 points. Following their win at Houston (11/24/19), the Mavericks had led at the end of 18 straight quarters (the last time they trailed at the end of a quarter was at halftime of their game against Toronto on 11/16/19). Dallas’ second five-game win streak came in a different fashion. The Mavericks won the first four games (at Phoenix 11/29/19, at the L.A. Lakers 12/1/19, at New Orleans 12/3/19 and vs. Minnesota 12/4/19) after trailing by double digits in all of them. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, it marked the first time Dallas had such a four-game win streak within a single season since 1997-98 (that’s as far back as they can go on due to play-by-play limitations historically). The Mavericks trailed for only 34 seconds in their 130-84 victory over the Pelicans on 12/7/19 however. During its second five-game win streak (11/29-12/7/19), Dallas won those five games by an average margin of 19 points. DONČIĆ GOES FOR 33-18-5 IN JUST THREE QUARTERS AT NOLA: Mavericks second-year guard Luka Dončić poured in a game-high 33 points to go along with a career-high (game-high) 18 rebounds and five assists in just 28:29 in Dallas’ 118-97 win at New Orleans on 12/3/19 (he did not play in the fourth quarter). Dončić joined John Drew as the only players in NBA history to post those numbers in a game before turning 21 years old (Drew had three such games for Atlanta in 1974-75). DONČIĆ’S 15-POINT, 10-REBOUND THIRD QUARTER AT NOLA: Mavericks second-year guard Luka Dončić tallied 15 points and 10 rebounds in the third quarter at New Orleans on 12/3/19. He became the only guard in the last 20 seasons to collect at least 15 points and 10 boards in a single quarter. The 10 third-quarter boards marked a new career-high for rebounds in a single period. Prior to his 15-point, 10-rebound quarter against the Pelicans, No. 77 had hauled in exactly 7 rebounds in a single frame 8 times, including the first quarter of that same against New Orleans (12/3/19). Dončić finished with a career-high (game-high) 18 rebounds to go along with a game-high 33 points and five assists against the Pelicans.

DONČIĆ NAMED WESTERN CONFERENCE PLAYER OF THE MONTH: Mavericks guard Luka Dončić was named the Kia NBA Western Conference Player of the Month for games played in October/November. The 20-year-old became the first Maverick to garner the award since Dirk Nowitzki in April 2009. He also became the youngest Western Conference Player of the Month winner since the league began issuing the award by conference in 2001-02. It marked the eighth time in franchise history that a Maverick won Player of the Month honors. Nowitzki was the sole recipient of the award five times in his career (for December 2004, February 2005, December 2005, February 2007 and April 2009) and also shared the honor with Michael Finley and Steve Nash in November 2002. Aguirre was the first Maverick ever to take home the award, winning it for January 1984. Dončić led Dallas to a 12-6 (.667) record in October/November with averages of 30.8 points, 9.9 rebounds, 9.6 assists and 1.4 steals in 34.2 minutes per game. DONČIĆ’S IMPRESSIVE START IN 2019-20: Luka Dončić put together some of the best point-rebound-assist totals in NBA history through his first 10, 15 and 20 games in 2019-20. Through his first 10 games this year (10/23-11/11/19), the second-year guard racked up 283 points, 103 rebounds and 91 assists, joining Oscar Robertson as the sole players in NBA history to total at least 250 points/100 rebounds/90 assists within their first 10 games of a season. “The Big O” did it in each of his first two seasons – 255 points/102 rebounds/92 assists through his first 10 games in 1960-61 and 298/121/134 through his first 10 games in 1961-62. Through his first 15 games in 2019-20 (10/23-11/22/19), Dončić totaled 449 points, 156 rebounds and 146 assists, again joining Robertson (479/195/187 in 1961-62) as the only players in league history to put up those numbers through their first 15 games of a season (Robertson was also in his second NBA season then). After playing in his 20th game this season, Dončić had totaled 614 points, 206 rebounds and 188 assists. Russell Westbrook (623/209/225 in 2016-17) and Oscar Robertson (609/255/240 in 1961-62) are the only players in NBA history to rack up at least 600 points, 200 boards and 180 assists within their first 20 games of a season. In fact, “The Big O” only scored 609 points through his first 20 games in 1961-62, so Westbrook – who went on to win the MVP in 2016-17 – was the only player to match those numbers through his first 20 games of a season. Dončić also broke Mark Aguirre’s franchise record (585 in 1983-84) for the most points through the Mavericks’ first 20 games of a season.

DALLAS’ IMPRESSIVE ROAD START IN 2019-20: The Mavericks won their first four road contests in 2019-20 (at New Orleans 10/25/19, at Denver 10/29/19, at Cleveland 11/3/19, at Memphis 11/9/19), marking just the second time in franchise history they’ve started a season 4-0 on the road. The only other year they won four-or-more consecutive road games to begin a season was in 2002-03 (Dallas started 7-0 on the road that year). Dallas also became the only NBA team to win its first four road games in 2019-20. After dropping two in a row on the road (on 11/11/19 and 11/14/19), the Mavericks rattled off another four consecutive road wins from 11/24-12/3/19 (with victories at Houston 11/24/19, at Phoenix 11/29/19, at the L.A. Lakers 12/1/19 and at New Orleans 12/3/19) to improve to to 8-2 (.800) away from American Airlines Center. It marked the third time in franchise history the Mavericks started 8-2 or better on the road and the first since their championship season in 2010-11 (Dallas started 9-1 on the road in 2010-11 and 8-2 on the road in 2002-03). MAVERICKS SNAP LAKERS’ 10-GAME WIN STREAK: The Mavericks ended the Lakers’ 10-game win streak with a 114-110 victory at STAPLES Center on 12/1/19 (Los Angeles entered with a 17-2 record on the season). It marked the first time Dallas snapped a win streak of 10-or-more games since its championship season in 2010-11. That year, the Mavericks ended two 12-game win streaks. They snapped the Spurs’ 12-game win streak with at 103-94 victory at San Antonio on 11/26/10 and the Heat’s 12-game win streak with a 98-86 triumph at Miami on 12/20/10. DONČIĆ AVERAGES 30-POINT TRIPLE-DOUBLE IN NOVEMBER: Mavericks second-year guard Luka Dončić finished the month of November with averages of 32.4 points, 10.3 rebounds and 10.4 assists in 14 games. He became just the third player in NBA history to average a 30-point triple-double over any calendar month (minimum 10 games played), joining Oscar Robertson (5 times) and Russell Westbrook (twice). In fact, he became just the fifth player in league history (minimum 10 games) to even average a triple-double during any calendar month, along with Westbrook (8 times), Robertson (7 times), Wilt Chamberlain (twice) and LeBron James (once, in February 2018). Dallas went 9-5 (.642) in November. DONČIĆ RECORDS THREE 40-POINT, 10-ASSIST OUTINGS OVER 6-GAME STRETCH: Mavericks second-year guard Luka Dončić recorded three 40-point, 10-assist efforts within a span of six games from 11/18-11/29/19. After going for a career-high 42 points, 12 assists and 11 rebounds vs. San Antonio (11/18/19), Dončić went for 41 points, 10 assists and six boards at Houston (11/24/19), and a career-high-tying 42 points, 11 assists and nine boards at Phoenix (11/29/19). Over the six-game span, Dončić averaged 35.3 points, 10.7 assists, 8.5 rebounds and 1.7 steals while shooting 51.1 percent (67-131 FGs) from the field, 35.9 percent (23-64 3FGs) from 3-point range and 82.1 percent (55-67 FTs) from the foul line. DONČIĆ NAMED PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Mavericks guard Luka Dončić was named Western Conference Player of the Week for games played from Monday, Nov. 18 through Sunday, Nov. 24, 2019, marking the first time in his career that he has received the honor. Dončić led the Mavericks to a perfect 4-0 week with averages of 37.0 points (.554 FG%, .444 3FG%, .788 FT%), 8.5 rebounds and 11.8 assists per game and victories over San Antonio (11/18/19), Golden State (11/20/19), Cleveland (11/22/19) and Houston (11/24/19). He posted at least 30 points and 10 assists in all four games, becoming the youngest player in NBA history (20 years, 269 days) to record four consecutive 30-point, 10-assist efforts (the previous youngest was Oscar

Robertson at 22 years, 34 days). He also led all players outright in scoring all in four games and led the Mavericks outright in assists in all four. The reigning NBA Rookie of the Year became the first Maverick to garner Player of the Week honors since Jose Juan Barea in 2016 (Barea won the award for games played from 3/28-4/3/16). He also became the 13th different Maverick to win the award, joining Jay Vincent, Mark Aguirre, Roy Tarpley, Jamal Mashburn, Jason Kidd, Michael Finley, Steve Nash, Dirk Nowitzki, Jason Terry, Josh Howard, Monta Ellis and Barea. DONČIĆ BECOMES YOUNGEST PLAYER IN NBA HISTORY TO RECORD FOUR STRAIGHT 30-POINT, 10-ASSIST GAMES: Mavericks second-year guard Luka Dončić posted four consecutive 30-point, 10-assist games from 11/18-11/24/19 (42 points/12 assists vs. San Antonio 11/18/19, 35 points/11 assists vs. Golden State 11/20/19, 30 points/14 assists vs. Cleveland 11/22/19, 41 points/10 assists at Houston 11/24/19). Dončić (20 years, 269 days) became the youngest player in league history to record four consecutive 30-point, 10-assist outings. Oscar Robertson (22 years, 34 days) was the previous youngest to achieve the feat. Dončić also joined Michael Jordan (1988-89), Russell Westbrook (2016-17) and James Harden (2016-17) as the only players since 1983-84 to produce four consecutive games of 30-plus points and 10-plus assists. What’s more, no Maverick had recorded back-to-back 30-point, 10-assist games prior to Dončić’s four-game run. In fact, the 20-year-old Slovenian joined Mark Aguirre, Jamal Mashburn and Dirk Nowitzki as the only Mavericks to score 30-plus points in four-or-more consecutive games. After Dončić posted his second 40-point, 10-assist outing at Houston (11/24/19), he joined LeBron James as the only players in NBA history to record multiple 40-point, 10-assist efforts before their 21st birthday (James had 3 such games). Over the four-game stretch (which saw Dallas go 4-0), Dončić averaged 37.0 points, 11.8 assists and 8.5 rebounds per game. MAVS SCORE 135+ POINTS IN 3 STRAIGHT GAMES FOR FIRST TIME IN TEAM HISTORY: The Mavericks racked up 135-plus in three consecutive games (all wins) from 11/20-11/24/19, marking the first time in franchise history they accomplished the feat (Dallas defeated Golden State 142-94 at home on 11/20/19, beat Cleveland 143-101 at home on 11/22/19 and Houston 137-123 on the road on 11/24/19). In fact, they became just the second team since 1992 to tally 135-plus in three straight games, joining the Phoenix Suns (Phoenix went for 140+ in 3 straight wins from 2/17-2/20/09). Clippers on 2/24/19). PORZINGIS PRODUCES BACK-TO-BACK 20/10 GAMES: After recording 20 points and a game-high 11 rebounds in his return to Madison Square Garden on 11/14/19, Kristaps Porzingis posted 20 points and a career-high-tying (game-high-tying) 15 rebounds vs. Toronto on 11/16/19. PORZINGIS BECOMES FIRST PLAYER WITH 300+ 3FGM AND 400+ BLOCKS IN UNDER 200 CAREER GAMES: After tallying his 400th career block (in his 195th career game) at Boston (11/11/19), Mavericks forward/center Kristaps Porzingis became the first player in NBA history to total 300-plus 3-pointers and 400-plus blocks in less than 200 career games (he recorded 304 3FGM and 400 blocks through 195 games). MAVS PRODUCE 8+ DOUBLE-FIGURE SCORERS TWICE IN FIRST 9 GAMES: After they had a franchise-record-tying nine double-figure scorers in their 109-106 win at Denver on 10/29/19, the Mavericks had eight double-digit scorers in their 138-122 win at Memphis on 11/9/19. It marked the fifth time in franchise history that Dallas had multiple games of eight-plus double-figure scorers in the same season. The Mavericks had two such games in 1985-86, two in 1992-93, four in 2014-15 and two in 2015-16. The nine games in 2019-20 were the fewest needed to accomplish the feat (Dallas had its 2nd game of 8+ double-figure scorers 13 games into the 2014-15 season, which was the previous fewest games required to achieve the feat). LUKA AND “THE BIG O”: Mavericks second-year guard Luka Dončić recorded four 25-point triple-doubles in Dallas’ first eight games in 2019-20, joining Oscar Robertson (4 in his team’s first 8 games in 1961-62) as the sole players in NBA history to accomplish the feat. The 6-7 Slovenian needed the second-fewest games in NBA history (78) to record his first streak of 25-point triple-doubles. Only Oscar Robertson (5 in 1960-61) required fewer games to accomplish the feat. What’s more, Dončić joined “The Big O” as the only players in league history to go for at least 25-10-15 in consecutive games. Prior to Dončić, Robertson (22 years, 351 to 353 days) was also the previous youngest player to produce back-to-back 15-plus assist triple-doubles. The former EuroLeague MVP joined Jason Kidd as the only players in Mavericks history to record back-to-back games with 15-or-more assists (Kidd had three such streaks). The 20-year-old Slovenian, who had a 35-point, 12-rebound, 10-assist effort as a teenager last season vs. Toronto (1/27/19), also joined LeBron James as the only players in NBA history to record multiple 30-point triple-doubles before the age of 21 (James had 2 such games – both as a 20-year-old with the Cavs – 40 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists vs. Milwaukee on 4/9/05 and 36 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists at Philadelphia on 11/19/05). James (39 points, 12 rebounds, 16 assists) also had a triple-double in the Lakers’ win over the Mavericks on 11/1/19. It marked the first time in NBA history that two opponents recorded 30-point, 15-assist triple-doubles in the same game. Dončić (20 years, 246 days) and James (34 years, 306 days) also became the youngest and oldest players in league history to produce a 30-point, 10-rebound, 15-assist stat line, and they did it in the same game. The Mavericks also accomplished the feat in a 151-129 win over the Sonics in the playoffs on 4/23/87. DONČIĆ AND PORZINGIS BOTH GO FOR 20-PLUS POINTS IN EACH OF DALLAS’ FIRST 3 GAMES: Mavericks duo Luka Dončić (34, 25, 29) and Kristaps Porzingis (23, 24, 32) both scored 20-plus points in each of Dallas’ first three games of the 2019-20 season (10/23-10/27/19). It marked just the second time in franchise history that the Mavericks had the same pair of teammates score 20-plus points in each of the team’s first three games of the year (Jamal Mashburn and Jim Jackson both scored 20-plus points in each of Dallas’ first five games in 1994-95). Gene Shue ranks 16th with 784 career victories. Carlisle recorded his 750th career victory with Dallas’ 129-127 overtime win at Memphis on 4/7/19, becoming the 17th coach in NBA history to reach the milestone.

DIRTY, KP AND KAT: Former Maverick great Dirk Nowitzki helped revolutionize the power forward position with his perimeter shooting. In 2000-01, Nowitzki became the first player in NBA history, age 22-or-younger, to record at least 100 threes and 100 blocks in a season (he hit 151 triples and blocked 101 shots as a third-year player for Dallas in 2000-01). At the time, Nowitzki became just the second player in league history (regardless of age) to tally at least 100 trifectas and 100 rejections in a season (Robert Horry, who made 142 3s and blocked 109 shots as a 25-year-old for Houston in 1995-96, was the other). Even with the game changing and big men taking more outside shots, there have been only two other players, age 22-or-younger, to go for 100-plus threes and 100-plus blocks in a season since Nowitzki first achieved the feat. Kristaps Porzingis, who the Mavericks acquired on 1/31/19, is one of them, while Karl-Anthony Towns is the other. At age 21, the 7-3 Porzingis made 112 3-pointers and recorded 129 blocks for the Knicks in 2016-17 (in his 2nd NBA season). Towns accomplished the feat twice, in his second (2016-17) and third (2017-18) seasons for the Timberwolves (at ages 21 and 22). However, Nowitzki and Towns both played in all 82 games the years they went for 100-100, while Porzingis did it in just 66 games in 2016-17.

ROSTER BROKEN DOWN BY DRAFT POSITION: The Mavericks’ 17-man roster features six former first-round picks, three former second-round draft choices and eight undrafted players. Just two seasons ago (2017-18), the Mavericks saw a franchise-record 14 undrafted players appear in at least one regular-season game for them. Last year, only seven undrafted players saw action in a regular-season game for Dallas. The 2019-20 roster broken down by draft position is shown below:

A, B, C, D … WRIGHT: This past offseason, Dallas traded for former University of Utah standout Delon Wright. The Mavericks have now had an A-Wright (Antoine), B-Wright (Brandan), C-Wright (Chris) and D-Wright (Delon) all appear in at least one game for the franchise. Coincidently, all four of those “Wrights” have made their Mavericks debut in chronological order (Antoine first appeared for Dallas in 2007-08, Brandan in 2011-12, Chris in 2012-13, and Delon in 2019-20). What’s more, other than the aforementioned players, there has been only one other “Wright” that has appeared in a game for the Mavericks during the team’s 40-year history – Howard Wright – who saw action in three games for Dallas in 1990-91. HOW THE ROSTER WAS BUILT: The post-Dirk Nowitzki era began for Dallas this past summer after the big German announced that the 2018-19 season would be his last. The Mavericks went into the offseason looking to build around the reigning NBA Rookie of the Year, Luka Dončić, by adding some pieces via the draft and free agency. On the night of the 2019 NBA Draft, Dallas originally selected guard Deividas Sirvydis with the 37th overall pick, but later traded his draft rights to Detroit in exchange for the draft rights to former Nebraska forward Isaiah Roby and two future second-round picks. When free agency began on 7/6/19, the Mavericks signed forward/center Dwight Powell to a contract extension, after the former Stanford standout averaged a career-high 10.6 points per game for Dallas this past season. On 7/8/19, the Mavericks acquired guard Delon Wright from Memphis in exchange for two future second-round draft picks and the draft rights to Satnam Singh. On 7/10/19, Dallas signed free agent Seth Curry, bringing back the former Duke guard for his second stint with the Mavericks (Curry averaged a career-high 12.8 ppg for Dallas in 2016-17). That same day (7/10/19), the Mavericks re-signed forward Maxi Kleber, after the German led Dallas in blocks (78) and blocks per game (1.10) last season. On 7/11/19, the Mavericks re-signed forward Dorian Finney-Smith, after the former Florida Gator led Dallas in games played for the second time in his first three professional seasons (he played in a team-high 81 games in both 2016-17 and 2018-19). On 7/12/19, Dallas signed 7-foot-3 forward/center Kristaps Porzingis, who was acquired by the Mavericks from the Knicks on 1/31/19 (Porzingis missed the entire 2018-19 season recovering from left knee surgery). By acquiring the Latvian-born Porzingis, the fourth overall pick in the 2015 NBA Draft, and pairing him with the Slovenian-born Dončić, who was drafted third overall in 2018, the Mavericks put together a roster that featured two of the seven international players ever taken in the top 4 of drafts (that list, which also includes Pau Gasol, Yao Ming, Darko Miličić, Andrea Bargnani and Dragan Bender, excludes foreign-born players who played high school or college basketball in the U.S.). On 7/23/19, Dallas signed 7-foot-4 center Boban Marjanović, giving the Mavericks two players 7-3 or taller. On 7/25/19, Dallas signed guard/forward Antonius Cleveland to a two-way contract, after he averaged 16.0 ppg (second on the team) for the Mavericks’ 2019 summer league squad. Cleveland, who appeared in 13 games for Dallas as a rookie in 2017-18, also returns for his second stint with the Mavericks. On 7/29/19, Dallas signed undrafted guard Josh Reaves, who was another standout on Dallas’ 2019 summer league team. On 8/19/19, the Mavericks re-signed guard J.J. Barea, who enters the 2019-20 campaign tied with Devin Harris for seventh place on the franchise’s all-time games played list with 608 (Barea is returning from right Achilles surgery). The roster currently stands at 17 players. Of the 17, four are in their first season with Dallas (Marjanović, Reaves, Roby and Wright). Three are in their second stint with Dallas (Barea, Cleveland and Curry). Barea, who was a member of the Mavericks’ 2011 title team, is the only player with NBA championship experience. The roster also features seven players born outside of one of the 50 U.S. states or Washington, D.C: Barea (Puerto Rico), Ryan Broekhoff (Australia), Dončić (Slovenia), Kleber (Germany), Marjanović (Serbia), Porzingis (Latvia) and Powell (Canada). The seven international players on Dallas’ opening-night roster were the most in the NBA.
