here this story sits in history gives me pause.
It does not sit in the heyday of the Weim
ar Republic; w
e begin tonight’s tale a few m
onths after the devastating financial crash of 1929. It does not sit in the height of N
azi power; w
e end before the 1930 election, four years before H
itler will becom
e Fuhrer. This story is nestled in the in-betw
een—a space w
here one can almost
imagine, m
aybe, it could have gone another way.
As you read this, folks behind the stage are
readying this space for real people today to em
body imagined people of that in-betw
een. They are not so different from
you. There is
the naïve, the passive, the respectable, the opportunistic, the fervent, the optim
istic . . . and over the course of only a few
months, they find
themselves caught up in w
hat we refer to as a
historical mom
ent that I suppose, to them, felt
like just another day. I suppose that is what all the
in-betweens feel like.
One could argue that w
e are always in an in-
between—
in between one historical m
oment and
another. And, if this is the case, I w
onder . . . have w
e staved off unimaginable horrors w
e will never
know?

TEThe w
orld of Cabaret is entering into the new
decade of 1930 in a B
erlin under the Weim
ar Republic. W
hat we know
, the characters do not. N
azism is on the rise, and G
ermany is about to fall
economically, spiritually, artistically, and pro-
foundly to its knees. And here w
e are in real time,
entering into our own new
decade of 2020. Our
world changes every day, and w
hile our access to know
ledge has spread exponentially with the
growth of technology, w
e are still incapable of know
ing one thing—
what w
ill come next. So, at
least for today, our next move w
ill be to watch
this production with our eyes like cam
eras, taking m
ental snapshots of scenes to log into our mem
-ory bank as another piece of our history on file. I hope you w
ill flip through your photo albums and
recall them from
time to tim
e.
Christopher Isherw
ood wrote in his 1939 novel
Goodbye to Berlin, “I am
a camera w
ith its shutter open, quite passive, recording, not thinking.” The am
ount of information w
e take in is astounding, our brain alw
ays working to filter w
hat will be
retained. We can focus like a cam
era, either up close or w
ith a wide lens. Isherw
ood wrote G
ood-bye to Berlin w
ith an awareness that w
hat he wit-
nessed in Berlin betw
een the years 1929 and 1933 m
ust be recorded. This is also the time and place
where our show
, Cabaret, is taking place.
In 1951, John Van Druten w
rote a play titled I Am
A
Cam
era based on Isherwood’s novel. W
hile Ish-erw
ood included multiple stories of people in his
work, Van D
ruten chose to turn his focus to one person: Sally B
owles, a perform
er in one of Ber-
lin’s nightclubs. He w
rites in his Note to Produc-
ers, “The story of Sally Bow
les appealed to me
when I first read it, over fifteen years ago. I knew
, then, that there w
as a play buried in it . . . She thinks of no one else for m
ore than a mom
ent.” H
e also chooses to write w
hat he finds to be the m
ost significant part of the play. “The mood of
the play—the establishm
ent for the audience of w
hat it felt like to be living in Berlin in 1930, and
the kind of life and people that one met there,
then—is its m
ost important quality.”
The story reached its musical form
, Cabaret, in
1966. The music w
as written by John K
ander and Fred Ebb (tw
o Jewish m
en), libretto written by U
S A
ir Force WW
II veteran Joe Masteroff, and direct-
ed by Broadw
ay legend Hal Prince. G
roundbreak-ing for the tim
e period in content, originality, and com
plete integration of the text, the music and
lyricist duo revolutionized a pre-war m
asterpiece, m
aking it an unbelievable success. With the 1998
revival (the version this production is based upon), w
hich became the third longest-running revival of
a Broadw
ay musical, m
ajor updates to the entire score w
ere made in the form
of synthesizers and a larger stage band and also included the m
usi-cians in the w
orld of the Cabaret as characters.
Possibly the most significant change, how
ever, w
as the addition of the hit ballad “Maybe This
Time,” w
ritten in for Bob Fosse’s m
ovie adapta-tion in 1972. The show
’s latest revival was in 2014,
a testament to its success and affirm
ation of its longevity as a show
.
Why has this story not only survived but thrived
for so long? Perhaps it’s the decay of humanity
for the pessimist, or the hope of building new
am
ongst the wreckage for the optim
ists, or even the fire of fight for those in betw
een. Maybe au-
dience mem
bers simply enjoy the m
usic. Or—
just m
aybe—it’s because the play continues to find
relevance in the age it’s being performed despite
the time and location of the show
never chang-ing. B
ut these are only my thoughts. W
e, as the audience of such a lyrical and poignant show
and as the cam
eras of the world, m
ust ask ourselves these questions begged by the w
ork: are we
bound to allow history to repeat itself, or can w
e use our m
odern age to our benefit in reshaping our future to w
hat we hope it can be? A
nd if we
can decide instead of a wide angle to refocus and
zoom our ow
n lenses as Isherwood did, w
hat will
we truly see inside the fram
e of our world today
compared to the w
orld that has already been cap-
tured in pictures we’ve seen in our history books?

COME AS YOU ARE. LEAVE DIFFERENT.
U of I students, come on in. In whatever clothes, whatever state of mind, from whatever world of experience, you are welcome here. We don’t have a dress code, we don’t have an opinion code, and we want the Center to be your kind of place. Because of the vital support of Krannert Center donors and the Krannert Center U of I student fee, U of I students never pay more than $10 for a ticket, and dozens of events each year are completely free.
Your presence helps to make Krannert Center a place like nowhere else—and what you can experience here makes your education like nobody else’s. If you are inspired by what you fi nd here, invite others to join you.
When you come to Krannert Center, we promise that you’ll leave different: refreshed, reaffi rmed, renewed!
