2019-20 DALLAS MAVERICKS GAME NOTES PAGE 1

2019-20 MAVERICKS NOTES … Statistical research assistance provided by the Elias Sports Bureau, STATS LLC, Basketball-Reference.com, NBA.com/Stats, ESPN

DONČIĆ’S TRIPLE-DOUBLES: Mavericks second-year guard/forward Luka Dončić, who doesn’t turn 21 until 2/28/20, already owns the record for the most triple-doubles by a player before his 21st birthday in NBA history (15). He recorded eight as a rookie alone, breaking Magic Johnson’s previous such record of seven, which was set before the Mavericks franchise was even formed in 1980 (Johnson’s record had stood since 3/30/80). Dončić’s eight triple-doubles in 2018-19 not only marked a Dallas rookie record (previous most: 4 by Jason Kidd in 1994-95), but also represented the third-most by any rookie in the history of the league (behind Oscar Robertson’s 26 in 1960-61 and Ben Simmons’ 12 in 2017-18). His eight triple-doubles last year were also one off of Jason Kidd’s record for the most by a Maverick in any one season in franchise history (Kidd had 9 as a second-year player for Dallas in 1995-96). Kidd holds the team-record for most triple-doubles with 21. After earning NBA Rookie of the Year honors last season, Dončić has picked up right where he left off. He has recorded five 30-point triple-doubles in 2019-20 and now has six for his career. It’s the most 30-point triple-doubles by a player before turning 21 in NBA history. In fact, LeBron James (2) is the only other player to produce multiple 30-point triple-doubles before his 21st birthday. What’s more, Dončić has set franchise marks for most 30-point triple-doubles (6) and 20-point triple-doubles (13). He’s the only Maverick to record a 40-point triple-double (42 points, 11 rebounds, 12 assists vs. San Antonio 11/18/19). Dončić and James are also the only two players in league history to produce a 40-point triple-double for their 21st birthday.

DONČIĆ BECOMES YOUNGEST TO POST 30-POINT TRIPLE-DOUBLE AT MSG: Mavericks second-year guard/forward Luka Dončić registered a game-high 33 points to go along with 10 rebounds and a game-high 11 assists in 36 minutes at New York on 11/14/19. MAVS START 4-0 ON THE ROAD FOR FIRST TIME SINCE 2002-03: The Mavericks won their first four road contests in 2019-20 (at New Orleans 10/25/19, at Denver 10/29/19, at Cleveland 11/3/19, at Memphis 11/9/19), marking just the second time in franchise history they’ve started a season 4-0 on the road. The only other year they won four-or-more consecutive road games to begin a season was in 2002-03 (Dallas started 7-0 on the road that year). Dallas also became the only NBA team to win its first four road games in 2019-20. MAVS PRODUCE 8+ DOUBLE-FIGURE SCORERS TWICE IN FIRST 9 GAMES: After they had a franchise-record-tying nine double-figure scorers in their 109-106 win at Denver on 10/29/19, the Mavericks had eight double-digit scorers in their 138-122 win at Memphis on 11/9/19. It marked the fifth time in franchise history that Dallas had multiple games of eight-plus double-figure scorers in the same season. The Mavericks had two such games in 1985-86, two in 1992-93, four in 2014-15 and two in 2015-16. The nine games in 2019-20 were the fewest needed to accomplish the feat (Dallas had its 2nd game of 8+ double-figure scorers 13 games into the 2014-15 season, which was the previous fewest games required to achieve the feat). LUKA AND “THE BIG O”: Mavericks second-year guard/forward Luka Dončić recorded four 25-point triple-doubles in Dallas’ first eight games in 2019-20, joining Oscar Robertson (4 in his team’s first 8 games in 1961-62) as the sole players in NBA history to accomplish the feat. The 6-7 Slovenian also joined Houston’s James Harden (7) as the sole players to score 25-plus in seven of their team’s first eight games this season. Dončić (20 years, 246 to 248 days) also became the youngest player in league history to record consecutive 25-point triple-doubles. The 6-7 Slovenian needed the second-fewest games in NBA history (78) to record his first streak of 25-point triple-doubles. Only Oscar Robertson (5 in 1960-61) required fewer games to accomplish the feat. What’s more, Dončić joined “The Big O” as the only players in league history to go for at least 25-10-15 in consecutive games. Prior to Dončić, Robertson (22 years, 351 to 353 days) was also the previous youngest player to produce back-to-back 15-plus assist triple-doubles. The former EuroLeague MVP joined Jason Kidd as the only players in Mavericks history to record back-to-back games with 15-or-more assists (Kidd had three such streaks). RAINING THREES: The Mavericks have hit at least five 3-pointers in a franchise-record 281 consecutive regular-season games (3/9/16-11/26/19). It’s the second-longest such streak in NBA history (Houston is currently riding an NBA-record streak of 285 straight games with at least five triples from 3/5/16-11/27/19). The previous team record was 56 straight games with five-plus triples from 4/10/15-2/3/16. Dallas went 22-of-38 (.579) from deep vs. Golden State on 11/20/19, tying a franchise record for most 3-pointers made in a game. Dallas also hit 22 triples once in each of the previous two seasons (22-of-39, .564, at New Orleans 12/29/17, and 22-of-53, .415, vs. Milwaukee 2/8/19). The 57.9 percent (22-of-38) 3-point field goal percentage put by Dallas against Golden State (11/20/19) marked its highest ever in a game in which it hit 20-plus threes. The Mavericks are 3-0 this season when they hit at least 20 3-pointers in a game (5-1 all-time). Dallas finished 1,022-of-3,002 (.340) from long distance in 2018-19, setting new team records for 3-pointers made and attempted in a season (Dallas went 967-of-2,688, .360, from deep in 2017-18, which was its previous most 3-pointers made and attempted in a season). LUKA AND LEBRON: Mavericks second-year guard/forward Luka Dončić poured in a team-high 31 points to go along with a game-high 13 rebounds and a career-high (team-high) 15 assists in an overtime loss to the L.A. Lakers on 11/1/19. His previous high-assist game was 12 (three times). Dončić became the third player in Mavericks history to produce a 30-point, 10-rebound, 15-assist effort, joining Mark Aguirre (30 points, 11 rebounds, 16 assists in win vs. Denver on 1/14/83) and Jason Kidd (33 points, 12 rebounds, 16 assists in OT win at Phoenix on 1/12/96). The 20-year-old Slovenian, who had a 35-point, 12-rebound, 10-assist effort as a teenager last season vs. Toronto (1/27/19), also joined LeBron James as the only players in NBA history to record multiple 30-point triple-doubles before the age of 21 (James had 2 such games – both as a 20-year-old with the Cavs – 40 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists vs. Milwaukee on 4/9/05 and 36 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists at Philadelphia on 11/19/05). James (39 points, 12 rebounds, 16 assists) also had a triple-double in the Lakers’ win over the Mavericks on 11/1/19. It marked the first time in NBA history that two opponents recorded 30-point, 15-assist triple-doubles in the same game. Dončić (20 years, 246 days) and James (34 years, 306 days) also became the youngest and oldest players in league history to produce a 30-point, 10-rebound, 15-assist stat line, and they did it in the same game. MAVERICKS TIE FRANCHISE RECORD WITH NINE PLAYERS IN DOUBLE FIGURES: The Mavericks tied a franchise record with nine double-figure scorers in their 109-106 win at Denver on 10/29/19 – Maxi Kleber (14), Tim Hardaway Jr. (14), Dorian Finney-Smith (12), Luka Dončić (12), Delon Wright

(12), Jalen Brunson (11), Kristaps Porzingis (10), Seth Curry (10) and Justin Jackson (10). The only other time in team history that Dallas had nine players reach double digits in a regular-season game was in a 147-124 win at Seattle on 11/6/86. The Mavericks also accomplished the feat in a 151-129 win over the Sonics in the playoffs on 4/23/87. DONČIĆ AND PORZINGIS BOTH GO FOR 20-PLUS POINTS IN EACH OF DALLAS’ FIRST 3 GAMES: Mavericks duo Luka Dončić (34, 25, 29) and Kristaps Porzingis (23, 24, 32) both scored 20-plus points in each of Dallas’ first three games of the 2019-20 season (10/23-10/27/19). It marked just the second time in franchise history that the Mavericks had the same pair of teammates score 20-plus points in each of the team’s first three games of the year (Jamal Mashburn and Jim Jackson both scored 20-plus points in each of Dallas’ first five games in 1994-95). Dončić (88 points, 29.3 ppg) and Porzingis (79 points, 26.3 ppg) accounted for 167 points (a combined 55.7 ppg) through Dallas’ first three games of the year. MAVERICKS PRODUCE BACK-TO-BACK 70-POINT FIRST HALVES: After scoring 72 points in the opening half at New Orleans (10/25/19), Dallas tallied 71 points in the first half vs. Portland (10/27/19). It marked the first time in team in franchise history that the Mavericks produced a 70-point first half in consecutive games. DONČIĆ GOES FOR 25-10-10 IN SECOND GAME OF 2019-20: In Dallas’ second game of 2019-20, Luka Dončić produced his first triple-double of the season (ninth career) with a game-high-tying 25 points to go along with a game-high-tying 10 rebounds and a game-high 10 assists at New Orleans on 10/25/19. Dončić (20 years, 239 days) became the youngest player in NBA history to record a triple-double within a team’s first two games of a season. The previous record was held by Oscar Robertson (21 years, 330 days), who did it in his NBA debut for the Cincinnati Royals vs. the L.A. Lakers on 10/19/60. DONČIĆ DROPS 34 IN SEASON DEBUT: Mavericks second-year guard/forward Luka Dončić tallied a game-high 34 points (12-19 FGs, 4-9 3FGs, 6-8 FTs), including 20 in the first half, to go along with nine rebounds, three assists and two steals in the team’s 108-100 season-opening win over Washington on 10/23/19. Dončić, who doesn’t turn 21 until 2/28/20, recorded the most points by a player 20-or-younger in a season debut in NBA history. The previous most was 32 by Atlanta’s John Drew at Chicago on 10/18/74. Dončić’s 20-point first half against the Wizards also marked the third 20-point half of his career (as a rookie, he had a 22-point 2nd half at San Antonio 10/29/18 and a 28-point 1st half at Cleveland 2/2/19). PORZINGIS GOES FOR 23 POINTS IN MAVERICKS DEBUT: Mavericks forward/center Kristaps Porzingis, who was acquired from the Knicks last season on 1/31/19 (but missed all of 2018-19 recovering from left knee surgery), scored 23 points in his Dallas debut vs. Washington on 10/23/19. It marked the second-most points by a Maverick in his debut with the franchise, behind Monta Ellis’ 32 in 2013-14 (achieved vs. Atlanta on 10/30/13). BAREA’S RANKS ON MAVS’ ALL-TIME LISTS: J.J. Barea, who is both the Mavericks’ oldest (35) and longest-tenured player (this year marks his sixth consecutive season with Dallas and his 11th season with the team overall), ranks seventh in franchise history in games played (610), tied for seventh in 3-pointers made (569) and ninth in assists (2,334).

20,000 MANIAACS: The Mavericks have sold out 728 consecutive regular-season home games, which is an NBA-best sellout streak. The streak began on 12/15/01 and Dallas has sold out an additional 67 playoff games during that same stretch (it’s 795 straight sellouts including playoffs). The Portland Trail Blazers (814 straight sellouts, 4/9/77-11/16/95) are the only team in NBA history with a longer consecutive home sellout streak (regular season and playoffs) than the Mavericks. The listed capacity for American Airlines Center is 19,200 but that can be surpassed because of attendance in the suites. Since moving into American Airlines Center (2001-02 season), the Mavericks have posted a home mark of 510-229 (.690) during the regular season. The Mavericks’ game versus the L.A. Clippers on 12/2/18 was their 700th regular-season game at the AAC and their game against San Antonio on 1/16/19 marked their 700th straight regular-season sellout in the building. Dallas’ 102-101 come-from-behind win over Portland on 2/10/19 was its 500th regular-season win at the AAC. The Mavericks have sold out all 41 home games in each of the last 17 seasons (2002-19). CARLISLE ON THE NBA’S ALL-TIME WINS LIST: Rick Carlisle, who holds an all-time record of 762-633 (.546) as a head coach, currently sits in 17th place on the NBA’s all-time wins list. Gene Shue ranks 16th with 784 career victories. Carlisle recorded his 750th career victory with Dallas’ 129-127 overtime win at Memphis on 4/7/19, becoming the 17th coach in NBA history to reach the milestone.

DIRTY, KP AND KAT: Former Mavericks great Dirk Nowitzki helped revolutionize the power forward position with his perimeter shooting. In 2000-01, Nowitzki became the first player in NBA history, age 22-or-younger, to record at least 100 threes and 100 blocks in a season (he hit 151 triples and blocked 101 shots as a third-year player for Dallas in 2000-01). At the time, Nowitzki became just the second player in league history (regardless of age) to tally at least 100 trifectas and 100 rejections in a season (Robert Horry, who made 142 3s and blocked 109 shots as a 25-year-old for Houston in 1995-96, was the other). Even with the game changing and big men taking more outside shots, there have been only two other players, age 22-or-younger, to go for 100-plus threes and 100-plus blocks in a season since Nowitzki first achieved the feat. Kristaps Porzingis, who the Mavericks acquired on 1/31/19, is one of them, while Karl-Anthony Towns is the other. At age 21, the 7-3 Porzingis made 112 3-pointers and recorded 129 blocks for the Knicks in 2016-17 (in his 2nd NBA season). Towns accomplished the feat twice, in his second (2016-17) and third (2017-18) seasons for the Timberwolves (at ages 21 and 22). However, Nowitzki and Towns both played in all 82 games the years they went for 100-100, while Porzingis did it in just 66 games in 2016-17.

Dallas has 13 back-to-backs this year. The Mavericks will play six back-to-backs that begin and end on the road, four back-to-backs to begin on the road and conclude at home, two back-to-backs that require no travel (begin and end at home) and one home-to-road back-to-back.

MAVERICKS TO FACE PISTONS IN MEXICO CITY: The Mavericks will face the Pistons in Mexico City on 12/12/19. It will mark the third time in team history that Dallas will play a regular-season game outside of the U.S. or Canada. Houston defeated Dallas 108-106 in Mexico City on 12/6/97, in what was the first NBA regular-season game held in Latin America. In the team’s most recent trip to Mexico City on 1/12/17, the Mavericks beat the Suns 113-108. A, B, C, D … WRIGHT: This past offseason, Dallas traded for former University of Utah standout Delon Wright. The Mavericks have now had an A-Wright (Antoine), B-Wright (Brandan), C-Wright (Chris) and D-Wright (Delon) all appear in at least one game for the franchise. Coincidently, all four of those “Wrights” have made their Mavericks debut in chronological order (Antoine first appeared for Dallas in 2007-08, Brandan in 2011-12, Chris in 2012-13, and Delon in 2019-20). What’s more, other than the aforementioned players, there has been only one other “Wright” that has appeared in a game for the Mavericks during the team’s 40-year history – Howard Wright – who saw action in three games for Dallas in 1990-91. ROSTER BROKEN DOWN BY DRAFT POSITION: The Mavericks’ 17-man roster features six former first-round picks, three former second-round draft choices and eight undrafted players. Just two seasons ago (2017-18), the Mavericks saw a franchise-record 14 undrafted players appear in at least one regular-season game for them. Last year, only seven undrafted players saw action in a regular-season game for Dallas. The 2019-20 roster broken down by draft position is shown below:

2018-19 SEASON RECAP: The Dallas Mavericks finished 33-49 (.402) in 2018-19, missing the playoffs for the third straight year (after they reached the postseason 15 times in a 16-year span from 2001 to 2016). Dirk Nowitzki played his 21st and final season with the Mavericks, becoming the only player in NBA history to play 21 years with a single team. Nowitzki, who made his 14th All-Star appearance in 2019 (he was named as a special roster addition by NBA Commissioner Adam Silver), finished his career ranked sixth on the league’s all-time scoring list with 31,560 points. Luka Dončić took the league by storm in his first NBA season, averaging a team-high 21.2 points, 7.8 rebounds and a team-high 6.0 assists per game in 72 games (all starts) en route to earning 2018-19 Kia NBA Rookie of the Year honors. Dončić, who joined Jason Kidd as the only Mavericks ever garner the Rookie of the Year award (Kidd shared the honor with Detroit’s Grant Hill in 1994-95), also became just the second rookie in NBA history (along with Oscar Robertson) to average at least 20 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists per game.

HOW THE ROSTER WAS BUILT: The post-Dirk Nowitzki era began for Dallas this past summer after the big German announced that the 2018-19 season would be his last. The Mavericks went into the offseason looking to build around the reigning NBA Rookie of the Year, Luka Dončić, by adding some pieces via the draft and free agency. On the night of the 2019 NBA Draft, Dallas originally selected guard Deividas Sirvydis with the 37th overall pick, but later traded his draft rights to Detroit in exchange for the draft rights to former Nebraska forward Isaiah Roby and two future second-round picks. When free agency began on 7/6/19, the Mavericks signed forward/center Dwight Powell to a contract extension, after the former Stanford standout averaged a career-high 10.6 points per game for Dallas this past season. On 7/8/19, the Mavericks acquired guard Delon Wright from Memphis in exchange for two future second-round draft picks and the draft rights to Satnam Singh. On 7/10/19, Dallas signed free agent Seth Curry, bringing back the former Duke guard for his second stint with the Mavericks (Curry averaged a career-high 12.8 ppg for Dallas in 2016-17). That same day (7/10/19), the Mavericks re-signed forward Maxi Kleber, after the German led Dallas in blocks (78) and blocks per game (1.10) last season. On 7/11/19, the Mavericks re-signed forward Dorian Finney-Smith, after the former Florida Gator led Dallas in games played for the second time in his first three professional seasons (he played in a team-high 81 games in both 2016-17 and 2018-19). On 7/12/19, Dallas signed 7-foot-3 forward/center Kristaps Porzingis, who was acquired by the Mavericks from the Knicks on 1/31/19 (Porzingis missed the entire 2018-19 season recovering from left knee surgery). By acquiring the Latvian-born Porzingis, the fourth overall pick in the 2015 NBA Draft, and pairing him with the Slovenian-born Dončić, who was drafted third overall in 2018, the Mavericks put together a roster that featured two of the seven international players ever taken in the top 4 of drafts (that list, which also includes Pau Gasol, Yao Ming, Darko Miličić, Andrea Bargnani and Dragan Bender, excludes foreign-born players who played high school or college basketball in the U.S.). On 7/23/19, Dallas signed 7-foot-4 center Boban Marjanović, giving the Mavericks two players 7-3 or taller. On 7/25/19, Dallas signed guard/forward Antonius Cleveland to a two-way contract, after he averaged 16.0 ppg (second on the team) for the Mavericks’ 2019 summer league squad. Cleveland, who appeared in 13 games for Dallas as a rookie in 2017-18, also returns for his second stint with the Mavericks. On 7/29/19, Dallas signed undrafted guard Josh Reaves, who was another standout on Dallas’ 2019 summer league team. On 8/19/19, the Mavericks re-signed guard J.J. Barea, who enters the 2019-20 campaign tied with Devin Harris for seventh place on the franchise’s all-time games played list with 608 (Barea is returning from right Achilles surgery). The roster currently stands at 17 players. Of the 17, four are in their first season with Dallas (Marjanović, Reaves, Roby and Wright). Three are in their second stint with Dallas (Barea, Cleveland and Curry). Barea, who was a member of the Mavericks’ 2011 title team, is the only player with NBA championship experience. The roster also features seven players born outside of one of the 50 U.S. states or Washington, D.C: Barea (Puerto Rico), Ryan Broekhoff (Australia), Dončić (Slovenia), Kleber (Germany), Marjanović (Serbia), Porzingis (Latvia) and Powell (Canada). The seven international players on Dallas’ opening-night roster were the most in the NBA.
