1. INTRODUCTION

This report is intended as an initial the data base of ground water levels of monitoring bores in the Southern complements a companion report Monitoring, Central Australia 1992.

reference for access to recorded by the network Region of the N. T. and

Ground Water Resource

It is designed to meet consultants, researchers, an overview of what data they can appropriately information.

the anticipated need of planners, and interested individuals to obtain are available for their use so that target requests for more detailed

Water levels are recorded on the data base sorted by registered bore numbers (RN). This is fine for access to individual bores when the number is known, however when data are to be accessed by geographical location the RN system of access is not very practical. For this reason bore data in this report are grouped into Monitoring Areas. Each such area has a geographical/geological significance typically all bores in such an area will belong to the same aquifer system -and often will monitor one specific water supply system and share a common set of monitoring objectives.

Each one of the Monitoring Areas is identified by the name given to it when it was added to the monitoring network. To further simplify access we have provided Table 1 which groups the Monitoring Areas into easily identified geographical regions. The location of the regions and the monitoring areas within them is also shown on a series of location diagrams (Figures 1 - 7).

The suggested procedure for access hence would be to deter~ine from Table 1 or from the location diagrams the names of the Monitoring Areas for which data are required, examine the bore data tables for these areas and there identify the registered nwubers of any bores for which more detailed data are desired.

The bore data tables as quality of record, and particular significance discussed in more detail

presented summarise record length, minimal water level statistics. The of each of the tabulated items is preceding the data tables.

2. REGIONS AND MONITORING AREAS

Figure 1 shows the locations of monitoring bores and the location of 6 Monitoring Regions. Each of these Regions contains a number of Monitoring Areas. Subsequent figures 2 to 7 show the location of the different monitoring areas within the monitoring regions.

Table 1 lists the names of these monitoring areas, and provides some general information about thern including the number of monitoring bores and tick marks indicating monitoring purposes. These purposes are classified as:

Town supply (Town)

Community supply (Comm)

Agricultural (Agri)

Developed (Used)

Supplies mostly high density dwellings (less than 2000 m2 per block)

Supplies lower density (rural style) (dwellings)

Supplies used for large scale irrigation

Is currently in use.

In any case where a supply has been ticked as 'Town' 'Comm' or 'Agri' but not as 'Used' that means that either the resource has been identified for a particular future use but is not developed as yet, or its use has been discontinued.

One general monitoring purpose which is implied but not stated explicitly for each of the Monitoring Areas is the maintenance of regional baseline data. Most Honitoring Areas will contain at least some bores which also serve this underlying base function. Areas without tick marks in Table 1 serve the COllection of regional baseline data only.

3. BORE TABLES

Tables are alphabetical above.

presented here order using the

for area

each monitoring names listed in

area in Table 1

Items shown on the tables include:

Length of Record - For convenience both the record length in years and the year when records start are shown.

Readings every - This represents the frequency of readings in weeks as an average of time between readings for the last five years.

Gaps in Record - If any interval between successive readings exceeds three times the average as described above then 'Yes' is printed in this column.

Average variation - For every year the annual variation difference between the highest and the lowest water during that year. This coluron lists the average of the variations for the entire period of record.

is the level

annual

Extreme Values - simPly the highest and lowest water levels recorded again for the entire period of record.

Least Square Line A least squares best fit line is determined for the last five years. The slope of this line is expressed in m/year. 1'. negative slopes means the water level is falling. The percentage error is the statistical standard error of the slope divided by the slope and multiplied by 100. A percentage error calculated in this fashion will appear high for best fit lines with small slopes. This should be considered before data are rej ected due to apparently high percentage errors.

All levels are shown here in metres from the top, usually the top of the casing, however for most monitoring bores elevation data are available in the data base and levels expressed as A.H.D. can also be provided in those cases.

For all bores with a short record indicated the statistical parameters printed in the summary tables should be used with the appropriate caution. For those bores with insufficient data where the columns for length of record or 'Readings Every' are blank all values printed in the other columns should be ignored completely.
