The Panthers• The Panthers are slated for a big week of MVC play, taking on the MVC’s #2 and #3 teams in Illinois State and Bradley.• The Panthers continued their undefeated start to league play last weekend with Friday’s thrilling 3-2 victory Valparaiso and Saturday’s 3-0 victory over Loyola. • UNI currently leads the Valley in hitting percentage (.283), kills (709), kills per set (15.76), assists (668) and assists per set (14.84). • Karlie Taylor owns a league-high 4.81 kills per set, Piper Thomas holds a league high .419 attack percentage while Rachel Koop tops the conference at 11.71 assists per set. • Within MVC-only action, Karlie Taylor paces all individuals with 4.86 kills per set and leads the league in points per set with 5.39. • Nationally, Karlie Taylor ranks 8th in kills per set and 7th in total points.• Nationally, Rachel Koop ranks 7th in assists per set.• UNI is ranked 15th nationally in the NCAA’s RPI release from October 29. The Panthers are also ranked in the AVCA Top 25, with 86 votes the Panthers are tied at 25th.• This is the 29th consecutive season that at least 10 Iowa natives are on the UNI roster including the second year in a row that 14 of the 15 Panthers are from Iowa. Each of UNI’s last 8,785 points played dating back through last season have been played with only Iowans on the court.• UNI returns four of seven starters from last year, including Honorable Mention All-America honorees Karlie Taylor and Piper Thomas, MVC All-Freshman pick Jaydlin Seehase and libero Kendyl Sorge.• The Panthers rank No. 8 all-time in NCAA Division I winning percentage (.773). UNI trails only Penn State (.863), Hawaii (.852), Nebraska (.843), Florida (.833), Stanford (.813), BYU (.778) and UCLA (.774).• UNI, Hawaii, Nebraska, Stanford, Penn State and UCLA lead the nation with 37 consecutive non-losing seasons in NCAA Division I volleyball. 2018 UNI Volleyball TV/Radio Roster

UNDEFEATED IN MVCThe Panthers adjusted to Karlie Taylor being out of the lineup and still managed to go 2-0 last week and are 12-0 in MVC play.

The Panthers will take on Bradley (19-6 9-4 MVC) and then take on the 20-5 (12-1 MVC) Redbirds of Illinois State.

BRADLEY BRAVESThe Braves currently sit in third place within the MVC with a 9-4 conference mark.

The Braves rank first in digs per set, second in service aces, and third in kills per set and fourth in assists in the MVC.

The Braves are led by Erica Haslag and Hannah Angeli offensively. Haslag leads the braves in kills per set will 4.22, good enough for third best in the MVC while Angeli brings in 11.06 assists per set, good enough for fourth best int he MVC

UNI leads the series, 64-10

ILLINOIS STATE REDBIRDSIllinois State has put themselves solidly in second place in the conference with their only loss being to the Panthers.

The Redbirds rank second in hitting percentage, assists, kills, and digs while ranked third in service aces in the conference.

Courtney Pence leads the MVC in digs per set with 6.22 while Ali Line comes in at the #2 spot in attack percentage with a .364 mark. UNI and Illinois State are the only teams with two players in the top ten in hitting percentage.

MEET THE PANTHERS

#5 “DISC JOCKEY”Redshirt senior outside hitter Lexi Astor enjoys playing Frisbee golf when she is not on the volleyball court or in the classroom. Astor is majoring in exercise science and sports psychology with an emphasis in biology (pre-chiropractic).

#6 SORGE’S STREAKSenior libero Kendyl Sorge has never missed a set over four years at UNI. Sorge, an exercise science major, played her first 66 sets as a freshman defensive specialist before spending the rest of her career at libero.

#8 FAMILY TIESFreshman outside hitter Baylee Petersen is a daughter of Panther head coach Bobbi Petersen. Baylee and twin sister Sydney, a libero at Texas, each wear the No. 8 which was also Bobbi (Becker) Petersen’s number when she played for the Panthers from 1986 through 1989.

#10 FAMILY TIES, PART TWOFreshman setter and sociology major Tayah Mahi is the oldest daughter of Panther assistant coach Kalani Mahi. Her full name is Tayah Kealohilani’ikamahinala’ila’i Mahi (middle name: kay-ah-LOW-hee-LAH-nee-EE-cah-mah-HEE-nah-LAH-ee-LAH-ee.

#11 DOUBLE TROUBLEJunior outside hitter Karlie Taylor leads the Panthers with 15 double-doubles this year. Taylor, a family services major with a minor in psychology, has earned Player of the Week honors three times so far this season.

#12 BUZZ ABOUT BUSSWITZRedshirt sophomore middle hitter Kate Busswitz has been a force up front, recording 11 block assist last weekend. A communication and marketing major, Busswitz played at Prairie High School in Cedar Rapids under Lynnette Stecklein and former Panther Ashten Stelken.

#13 SWEET TREATSFreshman middle hitter/outside hitter Inga Rotto’s list of talents includes baking chocolate chip cookies. Rotto has also started each of UNI’s first 25 matches so far this season.

#14 KOOP’S TROOPRedshirt junior setter Rachel Koop leads the Valley in assists within her first season running the Panther offense. Koop, a psychology major that also minors

in social work, was a four-time state champion at Dike-New Hartford High School.

#15 CARLY’S CLUBFreshman middle hitter Carly Spies played club volleyball for Club Iowa alongside Panther teammates Tayah Mahi, Baylee Petersen, and Inga Rotto among other DI volleyball newcomers. Spies is a perfect 3-of-3 on kill attempts over her first five collegiate appearances.

#16 COME PLAY WITH J.J.Sophomore outside hitter Jaydlin Jean “J.J.” Seehase hit .464 over two outings against Evansville last season. Seehase is currently majoring in supply chain management.

#17 PIPER’S RECORD WATCHSenior middle hitter Piper Thomas enters the week just 1 kill shy from tying Kim Kester for 4th all-time at UNI in career kills (1,439). Thomas, a movement and exercise science major, is also the career solo blocks leader, surpassing Denise Cuttell’s program record (90).

#18 ATTENTION, CLASSJunior defensive specialist Abbi Staack is majoring in elementary education with an emphasis in special education. Both of Staack’s parents (Jerrod, Kari) have held teaching roles in the Waverly-Shell Rock school district.

#20 SERVE’S UPRedshirt sophomore defensive specialist Taylor Hedges tallied 200 digs this year a 30 against Indiana back in September. A biology major with a pre-nursing, emphasis, Hedges opened 2018 with three aces in an upset of #13 Creighton.

#22 THERE CAN BE ONLY ONEFreshman middle hitter Kat Barr is a native of Antioch, Illinois and the only out-of-state individual on the Panther roster. Barr was a 2017 Illinois Volleyball All-Star Game selection alongside Zoe Nunez (Notre Dame) and Taylor Baranski (Iowa State).

#23 “IT’S IN THE HOLE!”Redshirt sophomore outside hitter and biology major Jamie Sindlinger was a Class 4A runner-up in golf at Charles City High School in 2014. Older sister Jessie Sindlinger was a collegiate golfer at Iowa where their father, Mark Sindlinger, played at center in the 1986 Rose Bowl and earned All-America recognition in wrestling twice for the Hawkeyes.

MID-SEASON NON-CONFERENCETo break up the conference schedule the Panthers hosted #18 Marquette. Ina tough battle the Panthers dropped the match 1-3.

ILLINI CLASSICUNI closed pre-conference play by going 1-2 at the Illini Classic in Champaign, Illinois.

The Panthers swept Lipscomb and posted a season-high .385 team attack percentage against the Bisons. UNI lost in straight sets against #8 Illinois and #10 Creighton to end the tournament.

ACTIVE ANKLE CHALLENGEThe Panthers won Ball State’s Active Ankle Challenge by going 3-0 with wins over Ball State, Indiana, and North Dakota State.

Karlie Taylor was the tournament’s MVP after registering 55 kills (5.00 per set). Kendyl Sorge (4.18 digs per set) and Piper Thomas (42 kills on .309 hitting) joined Taylor on the All-Tournament Team.

HOME WEEKUNI opened its 2018 home slate with a three-set loss to Iowa State followed by a pair of 3-1 defeats to Washington State.

The sellout crowd of 6,415 for the Iowa State match marked the third-largest attendance in Panther history behind previous encounters with the Cyclones in 2013 (6,621) and 2011 (6,490).

TROJAN INVITATIONALThe Panthers went 2-1 for a second-place finish at #10 USC’s Trojan Invitational to start the 2018 campaign. UNI opened the season with a 3-0 upset of #13 Creighton and closed its tournament action with a 3-2 upset of #5 Kentucky.

All-Tournament nods went to Karlie Taylor (4.81 kills per set, 2.81 digs per set) and Rachel Koop (11.27 assists per set, seven kills on 11 attacks with no errors). Taylor was also named Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week for her efforts.

STIFF NON-CONFERENCE SCHEDULEThe Panthers’ non-conference slate features nine matches against teams either ranked or receiving votes in the AVCA Top 25 Preseason Poll.

13 CONSECUTIVE YEARS OF APR RECOGNITION, PERFECTIONFor the past 13 years the NCAA has recognized teams in the top-10 percent of the Academic Progress Report, and the UNI volleyball team has been on the list all 13 years.

In fact, the UNI volleyball team has had a perfect score of 1,000 every year.

UNI volleyball is one of only 85 programs nationally to have earned the recognition in each of the 13 years that teams have been honored.

POLLING NUMBERSUNI has been ranked in the AVCA Top 25 117 times in program history - the most in the Missouri Valley Conference. The Panthers’ last poll appearance came after the first week of this season (No. 17).

By comparison, the rest of the current teams in the MVC have been ranked 52 times (Wichita State - 35; Illinois State - 14; Missouri State - 3).

In the state of Iowa, UNI’s 117 poll rankings puts it on top. Iowa State has been ranked in 77 polls, while Iowa has been ranked in one.

UNI has been ranked in the top 10 in the AVCA poll on 25 occasions. Wichita State has twice been ranked in the top 10 for the second-best number in the MVC.

UNI’s highest ranking in the AVCA Top 25 is No. 6 (last achieved Sept. 15, 2003).

17 MVC REGULAR SEASON TITLESThe Panthers have tallied 17 MVC regular season titles through the years.

UNI won the regular season title in 1986, 1987, 1988, 1990, 1991, 1994, 1995, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2006, 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2013.

21 NCAA APPEARANCESIn its 21 trips to the NCAA tournament, UNI has posted 15 wins, advancing to at least the second round 12 times.

UNI has advanced as far as the NCAA’s Sweet 16 three times since 1999. In 2002, the Panthers went into the NCAA tournament as the No. 1 seed in the East Region.

PANTHERS PICKED TO WIN MVCThe Panthers earned seven first-place votes in the 2018 Missouri Valley Conference preseason coaches poll and are projected to finish first ahead of Missouri State, Illinois State, and Drake.

This is 15th time that UNI enters a season as the coaches’ pick to win the league crown. The Panthers have won 10 titles as the MVC favorite and finished in second place during the other four years.

FAN FAVORITESThe Panthers consistently have ranked among the national leaders in attendance, including ranking No. 15 in the nation in 2017 with an average of 2,437 fans per home match. UNI hosted Iowa State in front of a sold-out crowd at the McLeod Center on Aug. 29.

CAN YOU DIG IT?Last season, UNI set an NCAA record for the 25-point scoring era with 2,581 digs. The Panthers also topped the nation last year with 1,997 kills, 1,857 assists, and 15.24 kills per set.
