Assalamualaikum and Salam Sejahtera.

Dear Scholars,

To me 2017, literally went off like a speeding bullet. And then suddenly a new year is upon us, which means new beginnings and the utmost attempts for all better-ment. A good way to start the new year is by reflecting the past. So, where do I begin? Well, for most parts, it was a business as usual but there were a few small wins that were significant and worth mentioning in this issue. Our efforts to look for diamonds in the rough started about 4 years ago. We had the sweet taste of labour when they aced their PT3 with flying colours. I remember the many trips made to KYS Melaka and the engagement sessions conducted to further motivate our scholars. It all paid well and we were excited to see how far they would go with their new found success and make a difference to their life, family and community.

Last year, we saw 5 of our scholars were successful in the admission to top USA universities, making it the highest we had after initiating the efforts to increase the number of scholars in the States. Whereas at the home front, we were happy and proud to have 3 more of our Medical scholars graduating and we also had the few more scholars from UiTM joining the big YK family. Not forgetting our Asia scholars who continued to achieve remarkable results in the studies, some even graduated first in the course. Congratulations, all! Indeed, I was delighted to be part of our scholars fulfilling journey and I couldn’t wait for many more rewarding news in the years to come.

As we are not only developing our scholars in the academic spheres, I am particularly excited to hear that our scholars are also big into play-ing their role in contributing back to the community. I truly under-stand that it is a tall order to juggle many things at the same time but to maintain the academic standing and putting aside time to help the needy is one of the many traits we hope to inculcate in our scholars. It warmed my heart to hear those wonderful efforts and I pray that they would continue doing those noble feats to serve the greatest good.

2017 has been a good year. Together, let us hope that 2018 to be yet another remarkable milestone for all.

YK Pre - Departure Briefing

YK Pre - Departure Briefing is a session developed by YK for the Khazanah Global scholars before they leave the country to pursue their studies either in the UK, US or Australia. During the session, scholars will be briefed on their responsibili-ties as YK scholars, the expectations, emergency contact details, some survival tips, experience sharing and etc. We are fortunate to have fellow alumni and the Board of Trustees to share their experiences as well as giving advice on how to max-imise the individual potentials to the YK scholars that will be studying abroad.

Yayasan Khazanah Premier Scholarship Programme (YKPSP) 13

YK Structured Leadership Programme which is dubbed as YK Premier Scholars Programme (YKPSP) was introduced in 2014. YKPSP has been designed to develop and build the core leadership competencies (YK3P) of the scholars using the 4-box learning mix approach which are; 1. Formal-Based Learning (FBL), 2. Community-Based Learning (CBL), 3. Self-Directed Learning (SDL) 4. Professional Experience (PE).

YKPSP forms an integral and pivotal part in YK scholarship Programme where each module is built meticulously and tailored to the core objective to ensure that we produce premier scholars.

YK Dinner is an annual event organised by

Yayasan Khazanah (YK), for YK Board of

Trustees, current scholars and its Alumni

to socialize/network and update on

achievements as well as welcoming the

new scholars into “YK Family”.

The theme 2017 was “Stylo Stylista” and

attended by over 500 attendees.

YK Events serve the purpose of Yayasan Khazanah in several folds, namely; engagement, scholar’s development and providing exposure to enhance their leadership skills. Apart from giving the scholars the hands-on experience as well as the knowledge of event management, YK Events also allow the scholars to interact with each other from different scholarship programs, with the YK Team and alternatively getting the scholars to be involved in community service. There were three main events that were held annually.

The YK CR Day is an annual event organised by YK as part of our effort to instil leadership qualities in scholars by giving them the op-portunity to run a CR programme that will indirectly help to develop their social leader-ship skills as well as contribute back to the society. This year’s particular event was held at Ta-man Botani Shah Alam with the theme EX-PLORE, DREAM & DISCOVER. One of the objectives is to encourage and introduce a healthy lifestyle and activities to the young generation. Children from Rumah Kebajikan At Taqwa Puchong Perdana were invited to join the scholars for a day of great fun and adven-ture.

YK has introduced Bestari Study Grant since 2012 in collaboration with Ministry of Education (MOE). Among other schools involved are Yayasan Amir’s Trust School Programme, Yayasan Pintar’s and Teach For Malaysia’s schools. The motivational programme was intro-duced first time last year targeting Form 5 study grant recipients from all over Malay-sia.

More than 12 Civic and NGO organisations participat-ed to provide internship and career advice to partici-pating scholars. This initiative focuses on the im-portance of building human relationship via intern-ships and attachments at any of the organisation. In exchange, scholars would have better understanding of the word “HUMBLE” and “HUMILITY” for their future. YK believes that, it’s a very crucial component in building and creating leaders of tomorrow.

17 Partners and leading organisations participated in tjis event. It’s our 2nd year with 80% returning part-ners and we hope for better turnout in 2018. This concept of engagement enables both scholars and recruiters to have a brief conversation to gather inter-est and knowledge between both parties. This session leads up to potential placement for participating scholars and opens up a lot of options. A “Speed Dating” concept throughout this events allows schol-ars to utilise their pitching, conversation and persua-sion skills and techniques which have been provided throughout their YKPSP modules.

Our scholars were very fortunate to meet with our Chairman YB Dato’ Seri Mustapa Mohamed at Malaysian Hall London last January.

Meeting with Mdm Yu Mei Ying, International Admission Dept of Beijing Learning and Culture University (BLCU). Together with us are Pn Zam from Khazanah Beijing Regional Office and our scholars at Beijing.

One of the important aspects of M&M (Monitoring & Management of scholars) that YK focuses on is engage-ment. Face-to-face, one-on-one engagement is conducted at least once a year. Throughout the year, the Scholarship Managers continuously communicate with their respective scholars. The medium of communica-tion varies from WhatsApp group, email, Videocon or telephone call. The discussion during engagement fo-cuses on scholars’ academic performance, co-curricular activities, opportunities as a student in their respec-tive schools or universities as well as their general well-being.

YK Outreach Programme 19

YK Outreach Programme is one of the initiatives by YK to increase the awareness amongst local students and teachers about the opportunities and the available scholarship programmes offered by YK. Last year in 2017, YK visited many schools and covered over 40 schools nationwide; covering urban, sub-urban, of Peninsular Malaysia. Apart from giving the students and counsellors comprehension on the scholarships offered, YKOP also set as a pedestal to engage with the economically challenged background individuals.

YK Counsellor Programme 2017

Counsellor Development Programme 2017 was successfully held from 19th—20th May 2017 at Furama Hotel, KL. School counsellors from 89 se-lected schools participated in this event. This is our annual programme designed to assist the selected schools’ counsellors to identify the “right” students in their schools to go through the Yayasan Khazanah scholarship assessments. The Counsellor Programme is part of Yayasan Khazanah’s contribution back to the community and at the same time supporting Counsellors in nurturing the talents in their respective schools.
