P
The three letters "PCE" is a cultural blueprint that Twinsburg
coach Mike Bell wants his program to follow each day.
Playing the game with passion, being a great
teammate, doing everything with passion.
C
E
We talk about it being an all-the-time thing, not when it
is comfortable or convenient. What kind of player do
you want to be? What kind of impact do you want to
have on the program?
Everyone has dreams of being great, but to actually go
out and make it happen through hard work is something
we strive for. It has to do with effort.
“The nice thing is individually we control all of those
things in PCE,” Bell said.

BULLDOGS
THE OPENING DRIVETwinsburg is looking to extend its winning streak to four games and keep its Division II playoff hopes alive when it hosts Stow for a key Week 7 matchup.
The Bulldogs are a misleading 1-5 in that they have played a difficult schedule and have been mostly competitive. Stow is comingoff a tough 44-42 loss to Nordonia. Bryce Sheppert rushed 23 times for 217 yards and two touchdowns in the setback. Brian Cartwright scored on special teams and ran for a TD for the Bulldogs, who are averaging 23 points per game.
The Tigers are on a 3-game winning streak led by a balanced offensive attack. QB Adam Van de Motter has had back-to-back solid games running the offense and moving the ball in the air. Jamir James, Jameel Banks and James Besett are all dangerous offensive weapons.
Defensively, Twinsburg has been a bend-but-don't break unit, allowing some points, but making stops when needed. Rashad Jones-Land has been the most consistent producer on that side of the ball, but there are several playmakers.
The Tigers are currently 8th in Division II, Region 5, and with games against 6-0 Wadsworth, 2-4 Hudson and 5-1 Nordonia to close the year, this is shaping up as a critical game vs. Stow.
BELL RINGING - Tigers Head Coach Mike Bell discusses last week's game against Brecksville
and the upcoming week 7 game vs Stow
"I was really pleased with how well our young men handled themselves leading up to the beginning of the game. We had experienced some issues creating a certain amount of adversity and they handled it well, came out and took care of business, andplayed the kind of game they were expected to play. I can't say enough about the leadership our seniors are showing right now, I'm proud of them and all the other young men in our program."
"Stow certainly is not your typical 1-5 team. They have played some incredibly tough opponents and played them well. They haveguys on the field that are capable of making big plays at anytime and have one of the best players in Ohio on their roster, Adrian Woliver, who plays both ways this year. Despite all of those things the key to our success this week is going to be in our approach to preparation, and the mental mindset that we not only carry throughout the week but also the one we take on to the field with us on game night. Success this week will require both physical and mental toughness from everyone involved in our program."

The Stow-Munroe Falls school district is not totally unfamiliar with the new varsity football coach — he did his student teaching at Kimpton Middle School in the 1980s.
Tom Phillips was named in February to take over the reins of the Bulldog football program, filling the vacancy created when Mark Nori accepted the head football coach at Olentangy Berlin High School. Nori had coached at SMFHS for eight years.
At his hiring, Phillips said he was “very excited” to be at SMFHS.
“Stow-Munroe Falls is a great school community with high expectations academically as well as athletically,” said Phillips.
“As educators and coaches, we have a great opportunity to build positive relationships, be role models, mentor students as they experience many life lessons and encourage them to reach their full potential academically as well as athletically,” he added.
“We were looking for a coach who could take our program to the next level and the district team targeted a number of criteria. We have found that leader in Coach Phillips,” said Cyle Feldman, SMFHS athletic director.
Phillips is joining the Bulldogs after serving as the director of player personnel for the University of Cincinnati. Prior to that, he was the head football coach at Pickerington North High School for 10 seasons and at Bexley High School before that.
As a head coach, Phillips has a career mark of 91-48, winning or sharing conference titles in 2007, 2012 and 2013, qualifying for the state playoffs four times and earning a berth in the state semifinals in 2012.
A native of Youngstown, Phillips earned his bachelor’s degree in education from the University Akron in 1983 and a master’s in sports science from Ashland University in 1995.
Twinsburg won its third straight game with a 35-20 win at Brecksville-Broadview Heights on Sept. 28.
The Tigers dominated the Bees in yardage, 323-128.
Jamir James ran for two scores, Adam Van de Motter threw for two TDs and four different Twinsburg players found the end zone.
Jamir James and James Besett scored early to give the Tigers (4-2) a 14-0 lead. Jameel Banks hauled in Van de Motter's second touchdown toss of the night to put Twinsburg on top, 21-7, in the third quarter.
After Brecksville cut the deficit to 21-14, the Tigers responded with TD runs from Jamir James and Austin Cefaratti to put the game away.
Jamir James finished with 124 yards on the ground and the two scores. Van de Motter was very efficient, completing 9 of 14 passes for 146 yards.
Twinsburg helped itself immensely by converting 5 of 6 fourth downs.

TWINSBURG TIGER STADIUM
Mike Bell is in his fourth year as coach of the Tigers and is looking to build on his past successes, bringing winning football back to Twinsburg.
Prior to coming to Twinsburg, Bell served one year as the head coach at Eastlake North and had a very successful 12-year run as head coach at Lake Catholic in Mentor.
In 12 seasons at Lake Catholic, the Cougars won 6 NCL Championships, qualified for the state playoffs 8 times (playoff record of 17-8) with 5 Regional Title appearances (2003, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2010) and 3 state semifinal appearances (2007, 2009, and 2010).
Prior to 2002, Bell served as the Cougars' defensive coordinator for three seasons, winning the Division III State Championship in 2001.
Prior to coaching at Lake Catholic, Bell spent three years at Willoughby South as a position coach and defensive coordinator, four years at Maple Heights, and two seasons at his alma mater Pymatuning Valley.
The first step toward creating an improved future is developing the ability to envision it.
VISION will ignite the fire of passion, which fuels our commitment to do WHATEVER IT TAKES to achieve excellence.
Only VISION allows us to transform dreams of greatness into the reality of achievement through human action.
VISION has no boundaries and knows no limit.
Our VISION is what we become in life.

Aaron Shaffer - Linebackers Coach
Twinsburg coach Mike Bell has always been a strong believer in building a program and not just simply a football team that competes on Friday night.
Part of that is the involvement of those outside of the players and coaches, including the administration, the community and perhaps most importantly, the football parents.Bell said the Tigers are extremely lucky to have the support of The Gridiron Club at Twinsburg and he doesn’t take it for granted.
“It starts with our administration doing a great job getting our young men the equipment and necessities for the game, but when you think about all the extras to make us a first-class program that is where the Gridiron Club comes in and really helps us,” Bell said.
“There are a million ways for parents to get involved and I always encourage parents to get involved and do what they can because it doesn’t last forever at the high school level obviously. The years go fast.”
The Gridiron Club is an organization of football parents in grades 7 through 12. There is no fee to join and all members of the community are welcome to attend meetings. The Club meets the second Monday of the month at Twinsburg High School. Meetings begin at 6:00 p.m. All of the fundraising is run through Twinsburg Athletic Boosters.
The Gridiron Club raises funds to help support the team off the turf. From purchasing a new sound system for the locker room to feeding the boys on Friday nights and scrimmages, purchasing football gear such as t-shirts and cinch bags, senior gifts and hosting the end of year banquet. These events are important in developing a sense of unity and pride in the program.
Twinsburg Tiger Stadium is one of the most used athletic facilities in Northeast Ohio. Twinsburg officials say Tiger Stadium's field gets used upwards of 950 times each year for various athletic events and practices -- from football, to soccer, to regional sporting events.
In the summer of 2015, the Stadium received a major upgrade to the playing surface. New field turf was installed featuring a unique blue border and a large Tiger logo at midfield. The 'grass' has a “paneled” look of lighter and darker green shades every five yards replacing the carpet that was installed in 2005.
Tiger Stadium has become a perennial site for OHSAA football playoff games, hosting two games last year - the Division I Region 1 Semifinal (St Edward vs Stow) and the Division II Region 5 Final (Hudson and Warren Harding)

1 - What is your background and what led you from Virginia to Ohio?
As a military brat, I went to high school in Dayton (Stebbins) and then attended Ohio State where I received a Bachelor's Degree in Social Studies Education. I taught one year at Bexley HS and then worked as an Industrial Engineer for 6 years with Rockwell International.
However, teaching and coaching were always what I wanted to do, and so I returned to education and taught at Bishop Ready for eight years. During that time I coached field hockey (Bexley was State runner-up to Hudson in the late 80s), basketball, softball, and volleyball. I also played field hockey while in high school.
I moved to Virginia in 1996 where I began teaching at Manchester High School in Chesterfield County.I eventually entered administration and served as a Dean, Assistant Principal and Principal at various schools in the county, ending my tenure as Principal of L.C. Bird High School in 2018. I left that position to return to Ohio, to be closer to my family.
I am excited to begin my tenure as the principal of Twinsburg High School, and look forward to an exciting career here in the snow belt!
2 - What is the biggest difference in high school education from Virginia to Ohio (culture, students, parents, facilities, staff, athletics, etc.)?
Really, there is not a discernible difference in Virginia and Ohio as it relates to students, parents, staff, etc. Kids are kids, and student-athletes are student-athletes where ever you go. I have found the facilities to be nicer than where I was in Virginia but I think that is mainly due to turf field (pretty much a rarity in central VA).
I am a little biased about athletics, as my former school was an athletic powerhouse, winning 7 state championships in the past 6 years - 3 back-to-back football championships, 1 boys basketball, 1 cross country and one boys track. Our girls basketball was state runner up during that time as well.
But, Twinsburg is On The Prowl, with Girls Soccer as our most recent example (currently ranked 9th in the state and looking at an undefeated season!). Cross country, track and bowling are all contenders as well. Of course, football is back on track with their winning ways, and I love the way Coach Bell relates to his players.
3 - What do you feel should be the role of athletics in the student-athlete's high school experience?
Athletics builds character, and teams build relationships. While athletics should not be the end-all, be-all, they are definitely important to a comprehensive high school experience. Spectators as well as participants have an opportunity to be part of something greater than the individual, and that is an important lesson to learn.
4 - What is your favorite part of the Friday Night Lights experience or your favorite part of any game day?
I mean, everything about Football is exciting. I will say the tradition that many teams have of going over to the band at the end of the game to sing the Alma Mater is a tradition that I love. Schools did not do that in VA and I think it forms a band between the students, the band, and the student-athletes. Of course, I also LOVE winning.

OCTOBER 5, 1991: The Fresno State Bulldogs defeated the New Mexico Aggies 94-17. Fresno State fell short of the NCAA record for scoring against a major college opponent (100 points Houston scored in a 100-6 victory over Tulsa on Nov. 23, 1968) but the Bulldogs did tie an NCAA record for scoring in a quarter, 49 points in the second to match Davidson's total against Furman in the second quarter of a 1969 game and Houston's fourth quarter of its victory over Tulsa in 1968. Ten Fresno State players scored touchdowns, and Mark Barsotti, Calvin Means and James Allison had two each.
OCTOBER 5, 1996: Despite fanning 23 Baltimore Orioles (a modern-day postseason record) in game 4 of the American League Divisional Series, the 99-win Cleveland Indians were eliminated from the postseason, as the Orioles scored a run against Jose Mesa in the top of the 12th inning, winning the game 4-3, and the ALDS 3 games to 1. Indians starter Charlie Nagy pitched six innings giving up just two runs and striking out 12. Mesa pitched 3.2 innings and gave up the tying running in the top of the ninth and the go-ahead run in the 12th inning. Manny Ramirez and Omar Vizquel had two hits each for the Tribe, Sandy Alomar had two RBIs.
