THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 8:00 PMAMIRAH SACKETT
Love Embraces All and other worksAmirah Sackett wants to reframe the dominant narrative about Muslim women in this country, and she’s doing it through dance. Founder of We’re Muslim, Don’t Panic, she believes in hip-hop culture’s ability to give voice to the unheard. Through the poetry of the 13th-century Sufi mystic Rumi, interpreted by Aja Black (The Reminders) and with original sound design by Chicago DJ Nevin Hersch, Sackett explores the barriers within ourselves and the walls that others build around us. Taylor, Rauschenberg, and Mid-Century Modern With Robert S. Mattison, Marshall R. Metzgar Professor of Art, Lafayette Paul Taylor’s early, experimental work was influenced by artist Robert Rauschenberg, with whom he created 17 pieces. Some were nearly lost to time until meticulously reconstructed and unveiled anew. With commentary by art historian Robert Mattison, Taylor 2 sheds new light on the duo’s seminal and rarely-seen 3 Epitaphs (1956) and Tracer (1962), as well as Junction (1961) and Party Mix (1963), works Taylor made with like-minded artists of the avant garde Alex Katz and Nancy Azara. When Angels FallFrench choreographer and aerial mastermind Raphaëlle Boitel is architect of a new form of theater that transports the imagination to unprecedented heights. In When Angels Fall, humans cling tenuously to nature against a cinematic dreamscape shaped by light and shadow. With extraordinary physical prowess and the derring-do of great circus artists, performers glide, soar, and dance on the edge of a vanishing civilization. Are humans predisposed to self-destruction? Envisioning the future is sometimes the best way to talk about the present.
