The Parkview MIrro Center for Research and Innovation will better equip individuals and families, healthcare providers, health organizations and entrepreneurs to face the future.

The Parkview Research Center works with area physicians to test the safety and effectiveness of new medications and treatments. In the first 25 years of its history, the research center has completed more than 400 research studies in cardiology, neurology and oncology research. More recently, the research team has broadened its scope to include radiation oncology, gastroenterology and bioinformatics. Ninety research studies are currently available locally. Having easy access to research studies provides many benefits to residents in northeast Indiana, northwest Ohio and south-central Michigan.

The Parkview Center for Advanced Medical Simulation features three medical simulation labs equipped with technology to train physicians and other healthcare providers in complex skills within a safe, non-patient care environment. Sophisticated medial mannequins used in the Mirro Center are life-like in that they “breath,” “speak” and respond to treatment by the clinical team. These labs allow providers to learn procedures that prepare them to better care for patients in surgical, intensive care and acute care settings.

The facility’s greatest promise for transforming how healthcare is delivered to patients will take place in the Parkview Center for Health Innovation. This space is designed to generate creativity and collaboration as new solutions to healthcare challenges are developed.

The mission of the Parkview Mirro Center for Research and Innovation is to lead the discovery of “next-generation” technologies and medical practices that have potential to revolutionize healthcare and save lives.

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT & CEOK A R L R . L A P A N

Thank you for attending and supporting the fifth annual Ideas @ Work event. Over the last five years, this special day has been transformed from an event to a movement. This movement has reached diverse segments of our community and has served as a powerful catalyst for shining a light on under-represented entrepreneurs. It has inspired students to become entrepreneurial in their thinking and in starting new ventures, and it has supported our efforts to create new, non-traditional access points and on-ramps for entrepreneurs.

While the term entrepreneur has been romanticized, it has become increasingly clear to me that there are three main characteristics that define and distinguish an entrepreneur today. Entrepreneurs…

• Pursue an opportunity by validating a pain or problem; • Create and capture value in the marketplace; and• Manage uncertainties.

Through your ongoing support, including being here today, The NIIC and WEOC continually aim and aspire higher.

MEET OUR EMCEEA L E X I S S H E A R

Alexis Shear anchors ABC21 weeknights at 5, 6 and 11. She also helped launch the ABC21 Digging Deeper investigative team.

Shear joined ABC21 in 2016, and quickly exposed public safety concerns with the Fort Wayne Police Department and the Indiana Department of Child Services. Her series on an Indiana coal plant sparked public outcry, and her year-long investigation into a Huntington doctor who received no jail time for felony sex crimes prompted a lawsuit filed by ABC21 for the right to broadcast a public record. Other investigations uncovered campaign

contributions to Indiana’s then-attorney general from companies under investigation, an understaffed public defender system surpassing state caseload guidelines, and a systematic courtroom practice that allows parents to avoid paying child support.

Shear joined ABC21 in 2016 and is a member of Investigative Reporters and Editors. She has a master’s degree in journalism from Columbia University, and received her bachelor’s degree in Public Relations and Art History from the University of Miami.

When she’s not reporting, you can catch Alexis and Adam fixing up their new house in Fort Wayne, checking out the city’s food and beer scene, drowning a bucket of popcorn in butter at the movie theater, or (occasionally) trying to work off all those calories at the Y - make sure to say hi!

The business builder program is designed for women who want to start, grow, or accelerate their online or digital businesses in Northeast Indiana. There is no cost to participate for those accepted into the program. This support of Northeast Indiana entrepreneurs is possible through generous funders, The NIIC Ideas@Work Signature Event, and The NIIC.

The Program provides the opportunity for doubling or tripling the start-up capital potential for a woman founder upon completion of the two-phase program.

Note: Limited to up to 5 founders/entrepreneurs per cohort
