W.L. Walker Co., Inc. was established in 1926 by William Lee Walker, co-inventor of the Tulsa Oil Thief™ (Tulsa Oil Thief Sampler). This became the first oil sampling device of the company, and continues to be the leading oil thief sampler of choice today. During the 1940s, numerous other types of sampling devices were added to the line, including the Lufkin Gauging Tapes and Plumb Bobs and various other products. By listening the customers needs, William developed new equipment for petroleum testing in the 1940’s, such as centrifuges, and a new style frame for gauge lines. As World War II came to an end, Arthur "Art" Walker, returned from the military to help this father run the company. Art began to seek new lines of equipment and develop new products. Art developed a multitude of centrifuges, including portable electric centrifuges and 12V water heated centrifuges, which used water circulation from the vehicles' system in order to heat the centrifuge. These new centrifuges would soon be able to run from 12 Volt or 115 Volt. In addition, explosion proof centrifuges were designed, and certified as CSA Approved Explosion Proof. Along these same lines, an inherently safe air driven centrifuge was developed. All of the
centrifuges that have been developed have met the specifications as stated in the API Manual of Petroleum Measurement ,Chapter 10.4: Determination of Sediment and Water by Centrifuge-Field Method. Art, too listened to the needs of customers which led to more new products being incorporated into the line of products. Art understood the value of plastic and glass bottles and cylinders for testing. He gained a distributorship for the Nalgene Lab Ware line in the 1950s, and Kimble Glass products in the 1960’s to continually improve the quality of all products. After four decades of maintaining the company his father founded, Art retired in 1986, and the third generation took over. Art's daughter, Anne Walker Brackett, became the next owner of the business. Anne is passionate about serving the industry. She has continued the development of the gauging equipment and incorporated CNC machines to ensure more efficient manufacturing. Anne and her team developed the Mark II Isotherm in the 1980’s, which has developed into an electronics line which has developed into state-of-the-art electronic equipment. Anne is a member of API and is a Chairman of the Chapter 7 "Temperature Determination" Working Group. She received her 30 year award at the API Fall Meeting in 2014. John Brackett is the fourth generation of the Walker family that will be operating the company. John and Anne are working alongside one another and the W.L. and our employees to expand the company that has been around for nearly a century. The W.L. Walker Company, both the Tulsa and Houston offices , are all members of a large family devoted to one another and to the customers they serve.

THE W.L. WALKER 18000 SERIES
12 VOLT WATER HEATED CENTRIFUGES Walker Heater Centrifuges incorporate a very sound and simple principle. The wasted energy in the form of hot water from the vehicle’s cooling system is circulated through a water tight section in the base of the machine. The heat is absorbed by the aluminum castings and in a very short time all parts of the unit are hot. The centrifuge is therefore heated with energy that does not make any additional demand on the car’s engine or electrical system. The only electrical energy needed is that used to actually swing the head and tubes during the centrifuging period. This design eliminates the need for separate oil sample heaters as all heated machines have preheater pockets built into them. This also reduces the need of additional demand on the electrical system or space for an additional piece of equipment. Another unique feature of this style machine is the square design with dual lids. This allows the preheater pockets to be placed inside for convenience and better heating. It enabled us to double the number of preheater pockets and permits easy cleaning of the machine. Also a hole in the center of the lid allows the operator to check the speed of the rotating head by using a hand held tachometer with extension. This model will meet the requirements of the API MPMS 10.4 “Determination of Water and Sediment in Crude Oil by the Centrifuge Method (Field Procedure.)”
CENTRIFUGES, Heated, 18000 Series, Walker, 12 Volt D.C. This model Centrifuge is equipped to handle the SHORT CONE and PEAR SHAPED Centrifuge tubes. Each machine has four preheater pockets, one in each corner. Dimensions are: 18” deep, 18” wide, and 10” high; lids open, 23-1/2” wide, 15-1/2” high. Wt. 52 lbs., shpg. wt. 63lbs. All have a intuitive soft start switch. For the type of centrifuge tube that may be used and the number of tubes that may be placed in a head, check below for your selection.

THE W.L. WALKER 115 VOLT THERM-O-CYCLE HEATED CENTRIFUGE EXPLOSION-PROOF C.S.A.
APPROVED For Class 1, Group D, HAZARDOUS LOCATIONS
The Explosion-Proof* Therm-O-Cycle unit is attached to the Explosion-Proof centrifuge as illustrated. The thermostatically controlled heating element will heat and, by thermal cycling action, circulate hot water throughout the heating chamber in the base of the machine. The heat is absorbed by the aluminum castings and in a very short time all parts of the unit are hot. This unit incorporates a low level float switch to shut the heater off in case of low water volume. This type design eliminates the need and space required for a separate oil sample heater. Another unique feature of the machine is the square design with dual lids. This allows four preheater pockets to be placed inside for convenience and better heating, and makes it easier to clean the machine. Also a hole in the center of the lid allows the operator to check the speed of the rotating head by using a hand held tachometer. This centrifuge will meet the requirements of the API MPMS 10.4, “Determination of Water and Sediment in Crude Oil by the Centrifuge Method (Field Procedure).” The machine can be ordered to accommodate four pear shaped tubes, or it can be ordered to accommodate four short cone tubes

The Walker Portable Electric Centrifuge is designed to eliminate the problem of having the switch near the whirling centrifuge head, tubes and shields, and to protect the operator. By removing the speed control from the machine and placing it in a separate control box, it allows the operator to turn the centrifuge on or off from a safe distance without the possibility of getting his hands or fingers in the revolving parts of the centrifuge. The power control system for the 12 volt is a “soft start” ON/OFF switch. This makes it possible to have a smooth transition from Start-up to the maximum speed in operating the centrifuge. The portable centrifuge is made in two parts. The centrifuge itself is composed of motor housing, motor, head, shields, rubber suction-cup feet and wire lead with male connector.
The unit can be used as a portable or it can be mounted in the vehicle. The 12 volt machine should be positioned away from the Power Control to give the operator the protection this type of arrangement offers. It is recommended that the samples be pre-heated before centrifuging.
The 115 volt unit does not require the control box, and plugs directly into an outlet. These units have a simple On/Off switch. control box which has a intuitive soft start switch., female connector for the centrifuge lead, and wire lead with cigarette lighter adapter. The two parts permit the complete unit to be carried in a very small area when not in use.

The 18400 Series Water Heated Air Driven Centrifuge adds another model to the line of fine W.L.Walker Centrifuges. These machines are inherently safe and meet API MPMS 10.4. Since the spinning operation is done with an air motor and the heating of the water is done away from the machine, there is no spark producing capability. The hot water can be supplied from any source available. If hot water is not available, the W.L. Walker thermo-cycle heater can be used.
The 18400 Series utilizes the time tested W.L. Walker body design that has been in use throughout the world for years. The four pre-heater pockets, available in pear shaped or short cone, are located one in each corner. The dual lids give easy access to the pre-heater pockets and enables the operator to keep the machine clean. The filter-regulator gives the operator the option to preset the pressure to the air motor, which controls the speed of the motor. The speed of the air motor can be checked by using a hand held tachometer inserted thru an access hole in the lids with an extension. The shut-off valve allows operation of the centrifuge. The adjustable in-line oiler lubricates the air motor while in use.
The air filter-regulator will reduce the air supply pressure down to the 60 PSI to 90 PSI level to produce the required RPM. Air consumption will range From 3.7 CFM to 7.2 CFM as determined by the use of a two-place or a four-place head.
The dimensions of the machine are 21 ” deep, 18” wide and 10” high, and with lids open the unit is 23-V2” wide and 15-V2” high. Wt. 55 lbs., shpg. wt. 63 lbs.

The 18500 Series Centrifuges
The Walker lightweight centrifuge is a new version of our fine Walker line of electric centrifuges. The same components were used to manufacture the electrical system, but they are now housed in a fabricated sheet metal housing that provides durability and heat holding capacity with lighter weight. For those interested in saving weight in their vehicles, this provides a 30 to 40 lb saving. In addition, handling by personnel is made easier. All major repairs can be done to this unit without taking it out of the vehicle. The motor comes out through the top of its housing. The electrical components are in the box on the front of the machine and the entire box can be replaced without taking the unit out of service. The only items that would require removal of the centrifuge would be the heating pads on the centrifuge bowl. This unique feature adds to the service capabilities of the unit, which has already proved its effectiveness for field use. It tightly controls temperature for the best possible heating of samples and centrifuging.
The unit is rugged, fully insulated and operates from the vehicle’s 12 Volt DC Electrical System. There will be no open doors, but a single small opening. Tachometer readings should be made through the tach hole with an extension. The machine is 20" wide by 221/2" deep. It is 10" tall, and 22" high with the lid open. The total weight is 33 lbs. The compactness and light weight of this unit are outstanding features for those needing to conserve space and weight.
The bowl heat for the centrifuge is controlled by a thermoswitch. It also has a manual hi/low switch. The machine is equipped with a temperature control that is set to produce an interior temperature of 140 º F, plus or minus 5 º. (60 º C.) The temperature of the sample should not drop below 125 º F (52º C.)

The Walker lightweight centrifuge is a new version of our fine Walker line of electric centrifuges. The same components were used to manufacture the electrical system, but they are now housed in a fabricated sheet metal housing that provides durability and heat holding capacity with lighter weight. For those interested in saving weight in their vehicles, this provides a 30 to 40 lb. saving. In addition, handling by personnel is made easier. All major repairs can be done to this unit without taking it out of the vehicle. The motor comes out through the top of its housing. The electrical components are in the box on the front of the machine and the entire box can be replaced without taking the unit out of service. It is 10-3/4" tall, and 22" high with the lid open.
The compactness and light weight of this unit are outstanding features for those needing to conserve space and weight. The light weight does not affect the performance, and it meets or exceeds the requirements of the API MPMS Chapter 10.4 “Determination of Water and Sediment in Crude Oil by the Centrifuge Method-Field Method”. Requirements in this standard make it necessary to closely monitor the heating of the sample prior to centrifuging and to maintain a minimum temperature during centrifuging. The bowl heat for the centrifuge is controlled by a thermoswitch. It also has a manual hi/low switch. Two preheater pockets are also controlled by a thermoswitch that is operated by a manual on/off switch and has a “heater on” indicator lamp. The machine is equipped with a temperature control that is set to produce an interior temperature of 140ºF, plus or minus 5º. (60ºC.) The temperature of the sample should not drop below 125 ºF (52ºC.) The total weight is 33 lbs.

This addition to the Walker line of quality products has been designed to meet the specialized needs of our customers. The Walker Hand Driven Centrifuge’s heavy duty construction and simple design make it ideal for field use. It has a smooth dual gear driven system. The gear ratio is 16 to 1 to assure efficient centrifugal force for S. & W. testing. The gear ratio and throw of the crank are designed to produce the required speed with the least effort consistent with good mechanical construction. This gear ratio allows the machine to start with a smooth effortless movement. There is a ball bearing at the base of the shaft housing and a bronze oilite bearing at the top. The crank shaft is supported by two bronze oilite bearings. The crank design provides ample clearance for the tips of the trunnion cups in all positions. The crank can be purchased separately, and the handle can also be replaced without purchasing the entire crank. The clamping lugs have serrated gripping surfaces and the clamping screw has a swivel bearing washer on the contact surface and a thumb screw lever for ease in tightening. The Walker Hand Centrifuge, with ordinary care, will give continuous service over a long period of time. All these features may be a more expensive way to make a hand centrifuge, but it assures a quiet, smooth running, high quality machine.

Available in both 12 Volt DC and 115 Volt AC. All parts are cast aluminum to give durability and long life in rugged field conditions. The 12 volt unit draws 4 amperes, and has a three-position switch with Manual-ON, OFF, and Thermoswitch-ON. The internal thermoswitch allows the unit to heat rapidly and then maintains constant temperature. This control system prevents excess heat from vaporizing the moisture which could give a false S & W reading. For higher temperature requirements, use Manual-ON (such as high wax contents).

HYDROMETERS
All hydrometers are precision grade and guaranteed to be well within the accuracy requirements of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). They are made of clear glass, thoroughly annealed to relieve stress. The streamlined body design settles quicker and air bubbles are not trapped on the instrument. Scales are printed on finest grade of paper and the gravity scale is a double scale so a reading can be observed from any position. The gravity scale has a registration glass strip fused in the top of the stem. The lower end of red strip is even with the topmost full numbers line on the scale. In all thermo-hydrometers, the ballast is of the solid alloy type with locking pin set in the alloy and anchored to the temperature scale. The purpose of the red glass strip and the locking pin is to show that neither scale has slipped or twisted. All API Gravity Hydrometers are calibrated on API Scale Modulus 141.5 at 60°F. Accuracy of temperature scale is within 1 degree. Certified hydrometers will be furnished at the customer’s request and to their specifications. We can furnish hydrometers with signed manufacturer’s certificate, or with an independent laboratory certificate. Many more hydrometers than are listed herein are available in API, Baumé and Specific Gravity, both in thermo-hydrometers and in plain form. Cost of certification will be based on price of the instrument plus charges. (Certification, transportation, etc.)
HYDROMETERS, API, Combined Form, 15”, 0 - 150°F API Chapter 9.3 of the MPMS, ASTM D1298, and E1000. These instruments combine API gravity scale with a thermometer in the body and are the standard and preferred size normally used for determining the gravity of crude oil and other liquid petroleum products, Length approximately 15 inch (374 to 387 mm), diameter ¾ to 1 inch (18 to 25 mm). Thermometer range is 0 to 150°F.

Special Tapes
GAUGING TAPE - METRIC, ENGLISHTapes are marked in METRIC AND ENGLISH with Chrome and Nubian finish, ½” wide, marked in feet, inches, and ⅛ inches on one side, marked every millimeter and numbered every centimeter on other side. Bob 42756.
OUTAGE TAPES When using outage gauging tapes, the tape is lowered into the tank until the plumb bob just penetrates
the liquid. The tape is then read at the reference point on the tank. The tape is rewound and the liquid level is read directly from the plumb bob. The reading on the plumb bob is added to the tape reading giving the total outage gauge.

These bi-metal thermometers are made of type 304 stainless steel, welded construction, hermetically sealed, actuated by a bi-metallic helix coil dampened with silicone for minimum pointer vibration and maximum heat transfer. Over range protection is 50% up to 500°F and 10% over 500°F. Heads are available in five dial sizesL1, 1¾, 2, 3, and 5 inch diameter. 1 and 1¾ inch units are guaranteed accurate within ±1% of the temperature range. 3 and 5 inch models are accurate within 1% of the temperature range and can be recalibrate. All models have anodized aluminum dials with distinct black numbers and graduations. The 3 and 5 inch models have antiparallax dials to avoid reading errors. The 1, 1¾, and 2 inch units are equipped with polycarbonate (Lexan) crystals for ranges up to and including 300°F. Heavy glass crystals are standard on the 3 and 5 inch models. Plastic, tempered glass, or shatterproof glass can be ordered at extra cost. (Do not use plastic crystals where thermometer head is subject to ambient temperatures above 150°F. In fact, if the head is subject to temperatures in excess of 300°F, please state the temperature.) Immersion of the stem should be at least 2 inches in liquids, 4 inches in gases. Stem length measurement includes the threads. The listing to the side is a list of standard temperature ranges available from the factory. Special dial ranges and stem lengths are available from the factory at extra charge. We offer our services to you on special ordering or stocking of thermometers not shown as stock items.
In the following groups, temperature ranges are shown that are usually in stock. Any temperature listed here that does not appear as a stock item can be ordered from the factory. All ASTM thermometers are made to “standard Specifications for ASTM thermometers E1.” All laboratory or chemical thermometers are made in accordance with the National Institute of Standards and Testing specifications. Most of these instruments are made of yellow back wide bore tubing that is properly aged and selected for uniform bore. All instruments are pointed and then calibrated with great care to assure accuracy. Only NIST certified instruments are used for control purposes.
All instruments are annealed to release stresses and this reduce breakage. Our thermometers have permanent fused pigment in the scales except where this fusing process cannot be used because of the scale design of the instrument.
The thermometers have fine sharp reading graduations for easier interpolation and easy to read numbers. Each unit has an expansion chamber for over range protection and is filled with inert gas under pressure to reduce column separation. All thermometers are filled with special distilled mercury except where a thermometer’s range extends below the freezing point of mercury (Approximately -37.89°F or -38.83°C). For units having temperature below this point, various liquids are used depending on the range and application.
Each thermometer is packed in a heavy transparent plastic tube. The clear tube also saves time in receiving, checking, and in taking inventory. There are many more types of thermometers, ranges, etc. too numerous to catalog. We can furnish you with any instrument you might need, either from factory stock or made to special order and to specifications. We are available at any time to help you with temperature needs.
All instruments can be certified by the W. L. Walker Company Lab. The customer should specify the number of points and their location on the scale that they want checked. . Factory certification is available and charges will be quoted on request.

CERTIFIED THERMOMETERS
W.L. WALKER can certify at temperatures from 32° F to 210°F (0° C to 99° C). The FACTORY can certify any temperature on the thermometer’s scale. Every certified thermometer comes with a certificate showing the corrections at each temperature tested.FACTORY certification usually takes 3 to 4 weeks, and WALKER certification usually takes less than 1 week.Verified thermometers from W. L. Walker can be done quickly if special situations exist depending
General Considerations for taking an accurate reading:
To eliminate parallax error, ensure that the scale’s reflection is visible in the mercury column and adjust the line of sight so that the scale graduation nearest the reading exactly hides its own image. The line of sight will be normal to the stem at that point. In reading thermometers, take account of the line’s appreciable width: consider the positions of the lines as defined by their centers.
PARTIAL IMMERSION THERMOMETERS indicate temperature correctly when they are immersed to specific depths. A mark and/or written distance on each thermometer indicates the proper immersion level.
TOTAL IMMERSION THERMOMETERS indicate temperature correctly when they are immersed to just barely below the reading.

There largest single cause for failure in precision thermometers in the lab is due to separated mercury columns. This can occur in transit or in the lab. The life of the instrument can be greatly extended if the following procedures are rigidly employed. Other methods may cause damage to the thermometer.COOLING METHOD: With the thermometer in an upright position, gradually immerse ONLY the bulb in a solution of solid CO₂ Dry Ice and alcohol so that the mercury column retreats slowly into the bulb. Do not cool the stem or mercury column. Keep the bulb in the solution until the main column, as well as the separated portion, retreats into the bulb. Remove and swing thermometer in short arc forcing all the mercury into the bulb. Most mercury thermometers can be reunited using this method regardless of range (with the exception of deep immersion thermometers) provided ONLY THE BULB is immersed in the CO₂. CAUTION:1. Do not touch the bulb until it has warmed sufficiently for the mercury to emerge from the bulb into the capillary.2. Never subject the stem of mercury column to the CO₂ solution as it will freeze the mercury column in the capillary and may cause the bulb to fracture. Please inquire for HEATING METHOD instructions.

All Tulsa Oil Thiefs have the following features: single trip (original with the Tulsa Thief), antifouling flat bail assembly, full opening horizontal closure system with rotating valve, two adjustable springs (one for closing tension, and one for tripping tension, for more flexible adjustment), side hanger on top casting for hanging thief on hatch or equipment case, adjustable graduated trip rod (trip rod makes fourth leg for holding thief in upright position as a hydrometer cylinder).
