Homers have been a big part of LU’s offense this season with an average of one per game. Last season LU hit just 12 all year - an average of one homer every 4.67 games. The Cards already have 14 this season and are on pace for about 41 this year with an average of one homer every 1.36 games.
Between D1Baseball, Perfect Game, and the SLC, seven Cardinals have received all-conference preseason honors. Robin Adames, JC Correa, Cole Coker, Ryan Erickson, Jason Blanchard, Jorge Gutierrez, and Dylan Johnson were picked by those organizations as either All-Conference players or Top MLB Prospects in the SLC.

STORY OF THE CARDINALSHUNGRY LIKE THE WOLF - DURAND GETS OFF TO HOT START• After not appearing in any of the first four games of the season, Reese Durand has forced his way into the starting
lineup. He came into the final game at Tulane in the ninth inning and got a hit in his only at-bat, a triple. He then went 6-for-10 in the Cardinal Classic with a run and an RBI while not striking out a single time. For the season Durand has 15 hits with three runs scored, three RBIs, four walks, and six strikeouts.
GEORGE REACHES OUT• Avery George has started every game this season and is hitting extremely well with a .377 batting average. He’s
collected 29 hits with four RBIs and 15 runs scored and he’s drawn 12 walks while striking out just 11 times. The sophomore from Humble, Texas, has reached base in 30 consecutive games dating back to last season and is also riding a 19-game hit streak. The reached-base streak is two away from tying a record and the hit streak is tied fifth all-time.
LAMAR PICKED FIFTH, SEVENTH, AND EIGHTH IN PRE-SEASON POLLS• Lamar was projected to finish eighth in the Southland Conference by both the league’s coaches and sports information
directors, as well as fifth in the D1 Baseball preseason poll and seventh in the Perfect Game poll.
• Big Red finished tied for 10th last season with a 19-36 overall mark and a 13-17 record in Southland Conference play. A hot May was almost enough for Lamar to make the postseason in 2018 but one game proved the difference for Big Red.
ADAMES NEARING RECORDS• Adames comes into the season with 195 career hits,
just 62 hits away from breaking the Lamar University career hits record. The senior from The Bronx, N.Y., has averaged 65 hits a season in his three previous years at LU. He currently has 217 hits, needing just 40 more.
• He’s also on pace to capture the Cardinal career at-bats record which currently stands at 831. Adames has 704 at-bats in his career.
TOP 25 RECRUITING JUNIOR COLLEGE RECRUITING CLASS EXPECTED FOR 2020• Lamar received a Top 25 national ranking from the Collegiate Baseball Scouting Network for
its four junior college signees to the 2020 class. The Cardinals rank 22nd in the nation with Zach Bravo, Zach Sweet, Trevin Michael, and Braxton Douthit heading to Beaumont in 2020.
• Lamar beat out #24 Southeastern Louisiana and #23 North Carolina and trailed only two Southland Conference schools in the rankings - #17 Abilene Christian and #14 Sam Houston State.
WHICH ONE DID YOU WANT?• Lamar has three Coles (Coker, Girouard, Secrest) on the roster. Due to pinch hitting and defensive subs, twice in 2018
Lamar has had all three outfield positions manned by Cardinals with the first name “Cole”, with Cole Coker in left, Cole Girouard in center, and Cole Secrest shifted over to right field. In addition to the three Coles, Lamar also has two Smiths on the roster in 2019 - Tyler and Austin.

ALL-CONFERENCE NODS, PROFESSIONAL PROSPECTS• Cole Coker was the lone All-Southland Conference honoree from the league office with
his First Team Utility Player spot in the Preseason release, but several other members of Lamar’s 2019 squad are predicted to have big years according to national news sources.
• D1 Baseball named JC Correa, Jorge Gutierrez, Jason Blanchard, and Robin Adames as potential draft picks this season, and Dylan Johnson was picked by D1 as an impact freshman. Noah Sills, Grason Wright, Ryan Erickson, Jack Dallas, and Anthony Quirion were also mentioned as players to watch in the upcoming year.
• Erickson and Adames were named All-SLC by Perfect Game in their preseason release and Johnson and Blanchard each received honors as potential pro prospects.
SIGNIFICANT RETURNS ON INVESTMENTS• Of the 21 returning members of Lamar’s roster in 2019, 17 of those student-athletes were either junior college transfers
or freshman in 2018. Though certain parts of the 2018 season were a bit tough with the relative youth of the roster, the season ended on an extremely positive note as those young players got more experience at a Division 1 level of play.
• Major contributors from the 2018 season included multi-year Cards like Robin Adames, Ryan Erickson, Cole Coker, and Cole Girouard, but newer faces also played large roles in 2018.
• Avery George worked his way from a spot start in April into the starting right fielder by the end of the season, hitting .305 in 2018 with 25 hits including two doubles and a triple. He went 4-for-4 in the final game of the season which helped Lamar lock up a season sweep of McNeese for the first time in 10 seasons.
• Cole Secrest started off his freshman campaign with one of the hottest bats in the country. He strung together a .636 batting average against Missouri State and Texas Southern, collecting seven hits - including two homers - with eight RBIs and a run scored in the opening weekend. He also had a 5-for-5 performance at A&M-Corpus Christi that helped Lamar sweep the Islanders.
• Jason Blanchard started 12 of his 13 appearances in 2018 in the Sunday starter role. He ranked second on the team in ERA (3.49), starts (12), walks allowed (20), and opposing batting average (.269) among qualifying pitchers and was one of just six SLC pitchers not to allow a triple.
• Noah Sills was the Saturday starter and led LU in starts with 14 in 14 appearances. He pitched 78.0 innings with just 26 earned runs, striking out 50 batters while allowing just 17 walks. He pitched at least 5.0 innings in 10 games including a career-best 7.1 innings against McNeese on May 18. He started his Cardinal career with a 0.00 ERA through three games with 15 strikeouts and just two walks.
YES THAT CORREA• JC Correa, a junior transfer from Alvin Community College, is projected as the starting short stop for Lamar. JC is the
younger brother of Houston Astros phenom and 2017 Major League Baseball World Series Champion Carlos Correa.
• JC had a terrific two-year career with the Dolphins of Alvin CC; he hit .364 in 80 games with a .432 OBP and a .491 slugging percentage. He totaled 103 career hits with three home runs and 50 RBIs and drew 37 walks while striking out just 33 times. He is 5-of-6 in stolen base attempts and was drafted in the 33rd round of the MLB Draft by his brother’s team, the Houston Astros. JC was named a Perfect Game Impact Junior College transfer coming into 2019.
• Questions directed to JC Correa about his older brother are discouraged and JC has been directed to answer those questions only if he wants to. We encourage all Cardinals fans and members of the media to let JC Correa be his own player and enjoy his time at Lamar University.

2018 LAMAR UNIVERSITY BASEBALL NOTES
WILL DAVIS HEAD COACH WILL DAVIS, who served on staff at one of the nation’s most prestigious programs in LSU for eight seasons before posting a season under Lamar Hall of Fame coach Jim Gilligan, is in his second season at the helm of the Cardinal baseball team. He was hired as the head coach on Jan. 15, 2016. In a very short period of time Davis has left his imprint on the LU program. Davis coached the team to 33 wins last season, including victories over national powers like Baylor and Rice. Near the end of the season, Davis’ charges traveled to Stillwater, Okla., where they took two of three from the Cowboys. Several members of the 2017 roster benefitted from Davis’ guidance on the field. Seven Cardinals were named to the All-Southland Conference squad. In addition to the eight players honored by the league, four Cardinals were selected in the 2017 MLB Draft – the most Cardinals selected in a draft since 2009. Davis’ success on the field tells only part of the story. The future looks even brighter for the Cardinals as Davis has been the architect of two of the better recruiting classes in program history. His first full recruiting class as the program’s head coach was ranked tops in the Southland, and 73rd nationally by Perfect Game. Davis merely followed that up with a 2018 early signing class that also ranks tops in the Southland and landed another top-100 spot in Perfect Game’s rankings. Davis’ early success with the program should come as no shock to anyone who follows the team. During his lone season as an assistant on the staff, he helped the Cardinals post one of the best single-season turnarounds in 2016. Big Red made a 14-game improvement that year, which included a 15-game win streak and wins over nationally-ranked programs such as LSU, Arizona and Texas. With Lamar in 2016, he helped LU to six wins over teams that went on to compete in the NCAA Regionals and a fourth seed in the Southland Conference Tournament, highest seed since 2009. Davis was given the obligation to work in catcher development as well
as base running. He aided Bryndan Arredondo to first-team All-Southland Conference honors, first catcher to do so since Michael Ambort in 2007. Arredondo was one of four Cardinals on the first team and five overall. The Cardinals are doing more than finding success on the field under Davis. LU recorded better than a 3.0 grade-point average both semesters last year, and have graduated all nine seniors during that time. Former Cardinals Brent Janak and Bryndan Arredondo were named to the Academic All-Southland Conference team. The son of former Louisiana Tech head coach Randy Davis, he saw tremendous success with his alma mater, including a 2009 College World Series Championship, in which LSU downed Texas in three games. That season wrapped up with a 56-17 record, one of three 50-win campaigns with Davis on staff.

2018 LAMAR UNIVERSITY BASEBALL NOTES
Davis has been a part of four College World Series, three Southeastern Conference Championships and five SEC Tournament Championship teams. He advanced to at least the NCAA Regionals every season but one while he was on staff and won five SEC West Division Championships. He began his coaching career as the director of baseball operations at LSU in 2008, but was quickly promoted to assistant coach just one year later. Since, the Baton Rouge, La. native has coached in both the first and third base boxes along with the catcher and outfield position groups. He was a student assistant and bullpen coordinator in 2007 after his playing career ended. After he was designated as a recruiter and directed to find Louisiana prospects in 2011, he aided the Tigers to five-straight top-10 ranked signing classes, including the 2014 group that was voted No. 1 by Perfect Game. In that time, he recruited four student-athletes from Louisiana alone that were eventual top 10 round picks in the Major League Amateur Baseball Draft. He was key in recruiting Kade Scivicque who was picked as a first-team All-American and fourth-round draft pick. Not only did Davis recruit Scivicque, but after Davis was given the catchers position group he developed the senior into a finalist for the Johnny Bench Award, annually given to the nation’s top catcher. He was also a key component of Mark Laird’s career, a ninth-round selection in the MLB draft and All-SEC Defensive Team member; Laird was recruited out of Monroe, La. by Davis. His judge of talent extends to the mound as well, he found and signed Austin Bain who was able to claim a spot in LSU’s weekend rotation as a freshman. Other than the Tigers’ top recruiting class in 2014, they ranked fourth in 2012, seventh in 2011 and 2015 and 10th in 2013. Along with his recruiting responsibilities, he was the director of the LSU Showcase Camps, which has aided in the discovery and signing of 37 high school athletes. The former catcher began his work with the position in 2015, and helped two catchers on staff get drafted in the same draft, Scivique and Chris Chinea. Chinea was taken in the 17th round. Under his tutelage, LSU’s outfielders gained a reputation as being one of the best position groups in the nation. In 2013, the Tiger outfield committed just one error in 68 games. He helped in the development of Mikie Mahtook, now a major leaguer with the Detroit Tigers. He was an All-SEC Defensive Team selection along with Laird (2015) and Andrew Stevenson (2014-15). Offensively, he helped with the development of position players at the plate. During his final season with the Tigers, LSU led the SEC in 10 offensive categories, including batting average with a .322 mark. In 2014, they ranked second in the league in scoring (6.3 runs per game) and slugging percentage (.415). LSU led the conference in hits (722), doubles (128) and total bases (1,023), and ranked second in batting average (.305), runs (439), runs batted in (394), home runs (47), on-base percentage (.389) and slugging (.432) in 2013. He was also in charge of LSU’s Baseball Camps, the director for the “Coaches Committee” booster club, direct liaison of the LSU Baseball Alumni and oversaw all summer baseball placements for LSU’s athletes. Davis was a Tiger from 2004-07, and was a letterman on the 2004 College World Series team. He is married to the former Danielle Hall of Bogalusa, La., who was a member of the LSU Golden Girl squad. The two welcomed their first child Everly in September 2016. He graduated with a bachelors in secondary education (2007) and masters in kinesiology (2010), and was born May 29, 1984.
