A Prayer for the Fourth of July

"Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord."

(Psalms 33:12, ESV)

Eternal God, Stir thou our minds and stimulate our hearts with a high sense of patriotism as we approach the Fourth of July. May all that this day symbolizes renew our faith in freedom, our devotion to democracy, and redouble our efforts to keep a government of the people, by the people, and for the people truly alive in our world.

Grant that we may highly resolve on this great day to dedicate ourselves anew to the task of ushering in an era when good will shall live in the hearts of a free people, justice shall be the light to guide their feet, and peace shall be the goal of humankind: to the glory of Thy holy name and the good of our Nation and of all mankind.

Amen.

(This Congressional Prayer was offered by Chaplain, Reverend Edward G. Latch on Wednesday, July 3, 1974.)

July is a month of transitions in leadership. Elders and Deacons who have served faithfully for three or more years step down from their time of serving and leading this congregation and new Elders and Deacons are Ordained and Installed and begin to learn about the challenges and blessings of saying “yes” to God’s call.

I want to take this opportunity to thank Larry Moore for his service to Ormond Beach Presbyterian Church as an Elder on the Session.

I want to take this opportunity to thank Linda Neely for her service to Ormond Beach Presbyterian Church as a Deacon.

When you see them in the coming months, please thank them for their faithful service to this church. They have offered one of the most precious gifts a disciple can offer – their time and talent.

I want to take this opportunity to thank the following newly ordained and installed Elders for saying “yes” to serve on the Session – Janet Foley, Virginia Norred, Randy Pechin, and Samuel Thomas.

I want to take this opportunity to thank the following newly ordained and installed Deacons for saying “yes” to serve on the Board of Deacons- Dana Chenault, Candy Christman, Kassie Manza, and Patt Thomas.

When you see one of our newly ordained and installed Elders and Deacons be sure to thank them and to encourage them as they begin their term of service by offering to help them.

I want to also take this opportunity to thank and acknowledge those leaders who will be continuing to serve us on the Session and the Board of Deacons.

Elders – Jim Carley, Bruce Miller, Ann Myer, Al Perkins, Bill Thompson, Carol Layton, David Morgan, Dan Roll.

Deacons – DeDee Blanchard, Janice Danielson, Linda Adams, Bonnie Thompson, Sherrilee Jarvis, Jewel Johnston, Joe Santos, Carolyn Williams.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR DONATIONS. Our contact free canned food drive was a huge success. Each day, our volunteers took trunk fulls of donations to Family ReNew and Halifax Urban Ministry. Thank you for your dedication to serving Christ and reaching out with his love to our community. Stay tuned for more Outreach opportunities in the future.

Congregational Care Parish Plan Update- Ormond Beach Presbyterian Church maintains a Congregational Care Parish Plan which is administered by the Board of Deacons. As the terms of Deacons expire, new Deacons are ordained and installed so your parish captain may change accordingly.

Most recently the Deacons have helped communicate the church’s re-opening plans and have begun annual telephone calls to those members who live in hurricane prone areas to encourage hurricane readiness and to offer assistance to those who may need help if their area is evacuated.

Thank you Becky Navidomskis, Linda Neely, and Susan Steele for your service.

Welcome Deacons Dana Chenault, Kassie Manza, and Bonnie Thompson!

In the Midst of Hurricane Season, you’ll likely hear names such as Arthur, Bertha, Cristo-

bal, Dolly, and Edouard this year, as these are the first hurricane names of the 2020 season. If you live in a hurricane prone area, there’s no time like the present to prepare your home and stock up on non-perishable food and water. You should create an evacuation plan in case local officials issue an evacua-tion order and share this plan with family and neighbors.

Familiarize yourself with emergency shelters, including those that are equipped to handle special needs or pets, and with local transportation systems. Votran, Volusia County’s Public Transit System, provides transportation to emergency shelters and continues its normal bus stops during emergencies. Flagler County Public Transportation is available by advance reservation.

Volusia and Flagler counties provide emergency notifications via phone calls and email, or by an app that can be downloaded. Visit www.volusia.org/emergency or www.flaglercounty.org/emergency, or call Volusia County Emergency Management (386) 258-4088 or Flagler County Emergency Management (386) 313-4200.

Deacons place annual telephone calls to those members who live in areas likely to experience severe weather to encourage hurricane preparedness and to make sure contact information for church records is up to date. To make additional changes to your hurricane readiness information, contact any Deacon or the church office (386) 441-0300.

Join us for Worship

During the continued presence of the COVID-19 virus and as we return to worship in our sanctuary, we are asking all worship attendees to observe the health and safety guidelines that have protected us this long difficult spring. We will continue to provide on-line worship services for our most vulnerable members with pre-existing health conditions who need to stay away from crowds for several more weeks. If you are feeling sick, have an unexplained cough or you are just getting over a cold - please stay home and join us for our on-line worship. We are offering two (40-minute) worship services on Sunday morning at 8:00am and 10:30am in the sanctuary with limited seating capacity. Please consider selecting the 8:00am worship time so that we can welcome everyone who wants to attend worship. We are asking every person who attends worship to wear a face mask while in the sanctuary. • We will refrain from greeting one another with handshakes and hugs. • Greeters inside the sanctuary will place worship bulletins on pre-arranged pews that

guarantee social distancing. You are asked to select a seat where a bulletin has been placed. Members of the same household – may sit together.

• Pew Pads and Offering plates will not be passed in the pews. Offering plates will be placed at

the doors as people leave so that you can drop your offering envelope in the basket as you leave.

• We will not sing during in-person worship service until it is safe to do so. • Following the Charge and Benediction please continue to maintain social distancing as you

leave the sanctuary and return to your vehicle. • We will not be having Coffee Hour after worship until it is safe to do so. • Sunday School Classes will resume later in the summer. • There will be no nursery care until later in the summer. We know that these guidelines may seem restrictive and bothersome. The safety of every member is our top priority. We thank you for your patience and forbearance as we move forward.

Thank you, thank you so much for all the wonderful gestures around Graham’s death. All of the food, phone calls and prayers meant so much for the both of us. You are a wonderful church family.

Thanks again, Carol Helnebdach

Online Learning-

Our small groups and Sunday School classes continue to be ways in which we stay in touch without being together in person and grow in God's Word in these times. If you would like to join a group or for your group to have a chance to meet via phone or video conference, contact Pastor Leigh. Our groups that are meeting via zoom video or telephone are:

Library Class, Sunday Mornings, 9:00 AM Sunday Jam for Children & Youth, Sunday evenings, 8:00 PM Mom's Group, Wednesday evenings, 8:00 PM

Intergenerational Gatherings - Our Intergenerational Planning team has been

meeting (via zoom) and praying together and brainstorming and we are excited to announce that when we are able to gather in person, we will be inviting everyone to join us

for socially distanced gathering to reflect on the wonderful and meaningful movie, A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood. We will share some favorite children's books and explore Scripture and stories about feelings, grace, forgiveness, death, and what it means to live with our neighbors.

ANSWERS to last months WORD SEARCH the names of sixteen of the 66 books of the Bible hidden in this paragraph.

I once made a remark about the hidden books of the Bible (merely by a fluke). It kept people looking so hard for the facts and for others it was a revelation. Some were in a jam, especially since the name of the books were not capitalized, but the truth finally struck home to numbers of readers. To others it was a real job. We want it to be a most fascinating few moments for you. Yes, there will be some really easy ones to spot. Others may require judges to help them. I will quickly admit it usually takes a minister to find one of them, and there will be loud lamentations when it is found. A little lady says she brews a cup of tea so she can concentrate better. See how well you can compete. Relax now. There really are sixteen names of books in this story.
