SLI supports the efforts of individuals with diverse abilities to achieve independence and actively participate in the community.
President’s Message

SLIhadafullandexciting2018!Inadditiontocontinuousimprovementinprogramsandservices,therewerenumerousadditionsrelatedtotraining,technology,security,safetyandcapacitytonameafew.
SLIwasfortunatetoreceiveagrantfromtheFHLBankTopekain2017.
Thisaffordedustheabilitytomakeupgradestothreeduplexesincludingnewliftchairsforthestairs,flooring,countertops,fencing,landscaping,deckandfoundationworkandmanyotherupgrades.Alloftheremodelingandupgradesareexpectedtobefinishedin2019.
CapacitywasincreasedinavarietyofwaysincludingtheadditionoftheReliasonlinetrainingprogram,fourtransitvansobtainedthroughaKDOTgrantandincreasingdirectcareprofessionalturnoverbynearlysixpercent.OurwebsitewasrebuilttopromoteawarenessandeducationofSLI,increasecommunityinvolvementandmoreuserfriendly.Thedatabasewasupgraded
tocapturealldonorinformation,integratewithourspecialevent,reduceduplicationsandincreaseaccuracyandefficiency.Biometricreaders,asimplifiedprocessforstafftoclockinandout,weretestedforstafftimekeeping.ThishelpsSLImanage,withgreateraccuracy,employeeschedules,overtimeandotherpayrollfunctions.
SLIpurchasedaneglectedbuildingsouthofourofficethatwasdeterminednottobeinhabitable.Sinceparkinghasbeenachallenge,thebuildingwasdemolishedtocreateadditionalparking.ThiswillincreasesafetyaroundSLIofficeswithbettersightlinesandadditionalparking.ThegreenspacewillgivetheCommunityIntegrationProgramadditionalspaceforgardeningandrecreation.
InaccordancewiththestrategicplanandduetoathreepercentincreaseinHomeandCommunityBasedServicesfunding,startingpayfordirectcareprofessionalswasincreased.Employeesatisfactionincreased,KPERS457wasaddedasanadditionalretirementbenefit,SLIsecuredlowerpremiumsforemployeehealthinsurance,addedahiringbonusandincreasedretentionbonuses.
TheCommunityIntegrationProgramincreasedenrollmentfrom49to59people.Participationinthisprogramincludesvolunteerism,educationalclasses,artsandtherapeuticprograms,recreation,socializationandjobtraining.
TheUniversityofKansaspartneredwithSLItodeliverthe“StoplightHealthyLivingProgram”thatofferedclassesfocusedonsafeandhealthylifestyles.SLIhad25clientsparticipateinthisprogramanditwillbeofferedagainin2019aspartoftheCommunityIntegrationProgram.
E.S.C.A.P.E.(Empowerment,Socialization,Caring,Attitude,Positivity,Entertainment)wascreatedbySLIstafftosupportwomeninourservices.
Finally,SLIwasawardedathree-yearaccreditationfromCARFInternational,thehighestawardthatcanbeearned.SLIhasparticipatedintheaccreditationprocesssince1997.
Weextendoursinceregratitudetooursupportivecorporationsandcommunity,withoutwhomwecouldnotachieveourmissiontosupportthosewithdiverseabilitiestoactivelyparticipateintheircommunityandincreaseindependence.

Independent Living Program Targeted Case Management
• Community Integration Program (day services)focusesonlife-enhancingactivities,activelearningand communityinvolvement.Theprogramkeeps59individualsengagedinactivities,volunteeringover800hoursamonthinthecommunity,learningdailylivingskillsandresponsibilityandjobskills. • Community Livingserves97menandwomenwholivein21SLIhomeswith24-hourstaffing24/7/365daysayear.Clientsservedrangefrommildtoprofoundphysicallyand/ormentallydisabled.Theyareprovidedasafehome,trainedstaff,transportation,medicalsupplies,nutritionalfoodandothersupportsasneeded. • Independent Livingserves33menandwomenwhohavegaineddailylivingskillsandindependencetoliveontheirownwithminimalassistance.Mostoftheseclientshaveapart-timeorfull-timejob. • Job trainingisprovidedforclientsthathavetheabilitytowork.Theprogramteachesappropriatebehavior,workethic,dresscode,resumebuildingandinterviewskills.Asanincentive,clientsarepaidminimumwagewhentheyparticipateinSLI’sjanitorial,landscapeandcardetailcrews. • Target Case Managementprovidescasemanagementfor186childrenandadults.Casemanagersassisttheclientandtheirfamiliestodevelopandimplementthepersoncenteredsupportplanandtoidentifyandmaintaineligiblestateandfederalfunding.Casemanagersmeetwiththeirclientsatleastonceamonth.

MelissaSmithwasbornin1963toBobandAudreySmithinHouston,Texas.ItwasearlyininfancythatherparentsbegantoquestiontheirpediatricianthatsomethingwaswrongwithMelissa.AttheageofeightmonthsMelissawashospitalizedandanewpediatriciandiagnosedherwithcongenitalfamilialdysautonomia.Melissa’sdoctorgaveherfatheramedicalreferencebooktoread.ThebookhadseveralcolumnsofthedocumentedinformationonthedisorderthatMelissawasdiagnosedwith.EventhoughBobandAudreyhadlittleinformation,theywererelievedtofinallyfindoutwhatwashappeningwithMelissa.
Congenitalfamilialdysautonomiaisarareinheriteddisordercharacterizedbyinsensitivitytopainandaninabilitytosweat.Melissaneedstobecautiousofexposuretoextremeweathersinceshehasnobodytemperaturecontrol.
“Melissahasnofearofanything,becauseshecan’tfeelanything,”saidAudrey.
ItwasthenrecommendedthatBobandAudreyinstitutionalizeMelissa.Thiswasthetypicalrecommendationandpracticeatthetime.Parentswerenotencouragedtokeeptheirdisabledchildrenathometoraise.Theyweretoldthatshehadmentalretardation,wouldgoblindanddeafandbeinavegetativestate.However,Melissa’sparentsdecidednottoinstitutionalizeher,butraisedherandtaughtherintheirfamilyhome.
In1964,herparentsweretransferredtoPhiladelphiaandaresearchdoctorheardaboutMelissaandaskedtodoastudyonhertofindoutmoreaboutherdiagnosis.Itwasthenthatthecorrectdiagnosisofcongenitalfamilialsensoryneuropathywithanhidrosiswasgiven.
Melissalearnedtoread,writeandbecamequiteeducated.WhenMelissawas18,shegraduatedfromTopekaWestHighSchoolandBobandAudreydecideditwastimetoletMelissagrowanddevelopfurtherindependenceawayfromtheirhome.TheyheardaboutSLI(ShelteredLiving,Inc.)andfromthenonMelissahaslivedinahomewithassistanceandsupportfromSLI.
BobrecallsthatasparentsitwouldhavebeenmoredifficultforthemtopushMelissatobecomemoreindependentbutwiththesupportofSLIshewasabletodothatinasafeandsecureenvironment.
WiththehelpfromSLI,MelissawasabletogetajobontheproductionlineatabookbinderycompanyinTopeka.Inordertogettowork,Melissahadtorideabuseveryday.ThisallowedMelissatheabilitytobeindependent,whichwasadreamcometrueforher.
Melissalovedworkingandearningherownmoney.Shewasabletogoonacruiseandpayforitwiththemoneysheearnedworkingatthebookbindery.
TheservicesatSLIhaveallowedBobandAudreytobeveryinvolvedinMelissa’slifeandtohavethefreedomofanormalparent/adultchildrelationshipandthesecurityofknowingtheirdaughterissafe,happyandsecure.
LisaJackson,president/CEOofSLI,said“MelissahastouchedmanypeopleatSLI;herfriends,staffandroommates.Sheisaverytenderhearted,strongwilledanddeterminedwoman.BobandAudreymadeadecisionyearsago,despitewhatthedoctorsrecommended,basedontheirvaluesandlovefortheirdaughter.Wearesothankfultheydid.”

SLI Transportation Fleet Partnership
Kansas Department of TransportationhaspartneredwithSLIformanyyearsinsupportingourtransportationfleet.Thegrantreceivedmadeitpossibletoaddfournewtransitvehiclestoourfleetof43with16thatarewheelchairaccessible.SLIprovidingtransportationforourclientsgivesthemindependenceandtheopportunityforcommunityinvolvement.In2018,weprovidedover138,000vehiclemileageforclientstothegrocerystore,work,dayactivities,shopping,church,medicalappointmentsandcommunityactivities.
Safeguarding & Advocacy for SLI Clients
Blue Cross Blue Shield Kansas FoundationsupportedourSafeGuardandMedicalAdvocacyProgramthatprovidesadvocacyforSLIclientswhocan’trepresentorspeakforthemselves.Whenaclientisadmittedtothehospitaloremergencyroom,itisessentialthatSLIstaffbewiththeclientduringthisvisit.Iftheclientisnonverbal,theSLIdirectcarestaffwillexplaintothemedicalteamtheproblemandthehistoryleadinguptothehospitalization.Adirectcarestaffmembercankeepthemcalmandexplaintothemwhatishappening.ThesupportofBlueCrossBlueShieldisimportantforthewelfareofthechildrenandadultswithintellectualdisabilitiesweserveandourcommunity.
