Mina Griffioen Bachelor of Science, Public Health Science

Ms. Mina Griffioen works in the postbaccalureate intramural research training program at the National Cancer Institute/National Institutes of Health, where she is continuing her study of the genetic mechanisms of health. Her interest in research started in high school, where she conducted a small study examining the extent of contaminants in pre-washed lettuce from grocery stores. At the University of Maryland, she sought out further research training through the First Year Innovation & Research Experience (FIRE) Program focusing on genetic mechanisms of human cells and viruses. For this work, she won poster presentation awards at national scientific conferences, including the Rustbelt RNA Meeting. She also served as president of Supporting Hospitals Abroad with Resources and Equipment, a campus nonprofit that collects medical supplies for developing countries. Following her training at the NIH, Ms. Griffioen plans to apply to PhD programs and pursue a career as a scientist.
