I have been volunteering for the United Way of Naugatuck and Beacon Falls for 16 years. It has been an inspiring and rewarding experience. It has been an honor for me to serve as Board President, and to partner with Board of Directors who are committed to helping those in need in Beacon Falls and Naugatuck. It has also been a reminder to be grateful, and to be constantly impressed by the wonderful human beings in this community that we serve. While one of the smallest United Ways in the State of Connecticut, we meet the challenge to have meaningful impact in our community through our work.

We serve a wide range of individuals in our communities through our partner agencies and raise funds annually through employee contributions and special events. The generosity of our donors and our event sponsors, the countless hours donated by our

volunteers and the dedication of our partner agencies never ceases to amaze me. Our United Way community is truly extraordinary.

Campaign Chair Ken Healy championed our campaign efforts, doing an outstanding job raising both funds and awareness of our United Way’s mission and its impact on the community. I would like to extend thanks, both personally, and on behalf of the community, to Ken and his team for their energy and dedication to our United Way.

Our Allocations Committee, led by Pat Peterson, spent many hours reviewing applications for funding, to make sure your United Way dollars are effectively placed within the community. The committee’s diversity and diligence are evidence of the vitality in commitment of the public in supporting our mission. I’d like to thank each of those volunteers. As is custom, the Allocations Committee meets with each of our partner agencies individually, reviewing impact analysis and programs, to ensure that your dollars met the need of our community. We are also thankful for the agencies’ thorough applications and their hard work in the process.

The Marketing Committee, led by Marylou Cunningham, continues to showcase the United Way with colorful and attention-getting advertising. This committee creates articles profiling both volunteers, agencies and donors for our website and social media, designs advertisements, and creates the United Way Newsletter. We continue to see our website develop with the assistance of Ion Bank. Please join me in thanking these dedicated volunteers working with us.

United Way also had a very successful year with special events. Our special events give United Way the ability to connect with the people of our community, while allowing us to add to campaign dollars in unique and fun ways. Here is a recap of this year’s events:

• Two very successful Designer Handbag Bingo events, spearheaded by Pat Peterson and Kathy McPadden

• Golf Tournament with NFL Alumni Partnership• Crowd pleaser Salem Bus Trip, thanks to Donna Andrew• Gobble ‘Til You Wobble, organized by Kim Ostuno and Courtney Ligi• The 12th Annual Festival of Trees• Jewelry Party Hosted by Marie’s Jewelry

The United Way is also proud to support the efforts of the CT Food Bank Mobile Truck, including soliciting for volunteers to assist participants, including the elderly, during the truck visits. Please join me in especially thanking both Executive Director Lisa Shappy and Finance Director Beth Mongelluzzo for their continued commitment, and for being such incredible role models in our community.

I am sincerely grateful to all of you for making my experience with the United Way of Naugatuck and Beacon Falls wonderful. Thank you to our donors, corporate sponsors, volunteers, partner agencies and staff. Live United.

Dear Friends,

It has been an honor to serve as the 2018 Campaign Chair. I am extremely proud to announce that our fundraising efforts were successful as we met this year’s ambitious goal of $415,000 which will allow us to fund our partner agencies. Our communities of Naugatuck and Beacon Falls are blessed to benefit from the commitment, dedication, and experience of our partner agencies. These agencies support our neighbors, families, and friends meet their basic needs, increase their financial and emotional stability and ultimately become more self-sufficient.

I am deeply grateful to those involved with making this year’s campaign a success. Much of this hard work is completed behind the scenes and goes without recognition. The members of the Campaign Team, Marketing Committee, Allocations Committee, and Special Events Committee work tirelessly to advance the mission of the United Way of Naugatuck and Beacon Falls. I am humbled by their willingness to sacrifice time from their busy schedules to serve in this capacity. I am proud of the diligence and professionalism displayed by each member while serving in this capacity.

I appreciate this opportunity to be part of the United Way of Naugatuck and Beacon Falls. I want to offer a sincere thank you to the Board of Directors, and our Executive Director, Lisa Shappy, and Finance Director, Beth Mongeluzzo. Their vision and exemplary leadership continually inspires me.

I would also like to thank those who donated to the United Way of Naugatuck and Beacon Falls. Our donors offered monetary contributions in addition to volunteering and supporting the partner agencies and their programs. We have seen countless numbers of individuals who at one time received benefits from the United Way and are now in a position to not only help financially, but also volunteer. Your donations help us complete this magnificent circle.

Sincerely,

Kenneth J. HealyCampaign Chair

The mission of the United Way of Naugatuck and Beacon Falls is to increase the organized capacity for the people of the Naugatuck and Beacon Falls communities to care for one another. This is done by identifying, communicating and responding to current and emerging needs in the communities we serve. To accomplish these efforts, we lead an annual appeal for funds and then determine how funds will be distributed to health and human service programs that serve Naugatuck and Beacon Falls residents.

The Allocations Committee facilitates the latter part of this process by interviewing all partner agencies that have applied for funding and reviewing their detailed applications to determine funding levels for

each agency’s program. During this process, each organization is interviewed by the committee and it is then that we (the allocations committee) have the opportunity to get a snap shot…a day in the life of the organization. This year, the committee recommended funding for 27 programs administered through 17 agencies serving Naugatuck and Beacon Falls.

I am grateful to the Allocations Committee and was inspired by everyone’s commitment to the process. Each committee member applied their insight and shared experiences to conduct a detailed review of all the organizations. The allocations process is completed over the course of six consecutive weeks. Thank you to each committee member for your willingness to give of yourselves each week to serve in this capacity and of your diligence shown throughout the review process assuring allocations were distributed in an unbiased way.

In closing, I would like to thank all who support the United Way of Naugatuck and Beacon Falls. It is through your volunteer time, funding and support that you provide that enables our local United Way to continue efforts to improve the lives of those in need.

It takes a Village. Live United.

Sincerely,

MARY CONNOLLY COMMUNITY CARING AWARD

PREVIOUS RECIPIENTS

Stephen Pretto was raised with his two brothers in Pawling NY. He graduated from Canterbury Prep prior to attending Temple University School of Pharmacy. After working as an immunizing pharmacist in Lancaster, PA during the late 80s and 90s, he returned to New England to join the management team of a small manufacturing company started by his father. After receiving an MBA from the University of New Haven, he began his tenure at Goldenrod Corporation where he currently holds the position of CFO.

Stephen has been a member of the United Way Board of Directors for over seven years - he is currently Secretary of the Board, and has served as Allocations Chair, Golf Tournament Co – Chair and also on the Campaign Team. His involvement in United Way began in 2010. In addition to the United Way, Stephen is involved with the East Coast Italian Greyhound Rescue organization and the Naugatuck YMCA serving on the Beacon Falls Initiative.

Stephen became involved with the United Way because he felt he could use his personal and professional experience to contribute to a socially responsible and unbiased charity. Having been a member of the United Way for some years, he has seen first-hand how the efforts of United Way impact the lives of those in need. Stephen has said many times “It motivates the benefactor in all of us”.

In 1991, Stephen married Susan , his high school sweetheart and longtime advisor. He belongs to several trade, civic, and recreational organizations. His hobbies include golf, scuba diving, wine tasting, and caring for the couple’s Italian Greyhound rescue dogs.

He is a perfect example of what the Mary Connolly Community Caring Award embodies.

Dear Friends,

As I reflect on 2018, I feel privileged to have had the honor to serve as chair of the Marketing Committee for this wonderful organization that helps so many people in need.

I would like to commend the 2018-2019 Campaign Chair, Ken Healy, and his campaign team for all of their time, hard work and tenacity that helped them achieve the goal of raising $415,000 for our community. The Marketing Committee is proud to support the efforts of the campaign team along with the many fun and exciting fundraisers that so many of you support so we can all help make a difference for those in need in

our community. We continually strive to advance the common good by increasing opportunities for children and youth to succeed, helping people become more self-sufficient in meeting their basic needs and increasing their financial stability.

It’s important to recognize our partner agencies for all the support and critical services they provide to those in need in our community, especially when state funding for these agencies continues to be a challenge.

A heartfelt thank you to the Citizen’s News and the Republican American for their generous donation of advertising space to help spread the word about our fundraising events and campaign updates.

We are extremely grateful to the many companies, their employees, and citizens of the community that generously support us financially as well as donating their time and talents throughout the year.

I’m very excited about the new events and fundraisers we celebrated this year. The United Way of Naugatuck and Beacon Falls, in conjunction with the CT Partnership for Children and the CT Food Bank, brought the Mobile Food Pantry to Naugatuck – it is held at the Naugatuck Event Center every second Thursday of each month. It has been a huge success serving families in need from many local communities, not just Naugatuck and Beacon Falls. We changed up our annual golf tournament this year by partnering with the NFL Alumni Association to help increase awareness of our event. New this year was the addition of Designer Purse Bingo that has proven to be a lot of fun and a hearty fundraiser. A super fun event was a Night of Music featuring the very generous and talented Senator George Logan and his band The Electric Lady – we are so fortunate for his dedication to the local citizens and to the United Way of Naugatuck and Beacon Falls.

Thank you to each and every one of you for making a difference and supporting our mission to Give, Advocate, Volunteer and to Live United.

Warm Regards,

Marylou CunninghamMarketing Committee Chair
