Seyed H. Aleali, MD - (Please read his biosketch.)

Candidate's Statement of Interest:

I am a hematologist practicing for over 30 years in Connecticut, and at the present a part time practitioner. During my years in practice Ihave been involved in city, county, and state medical societies in leadership positions and was the president in all. I have been amember of the AMA since my residency and a delegate for my State to our AMA for the past twelve years. My duty as a delegate will becompleted after the Annual Meeting. I have been a member of the Council on Legislation at the AMA for the past eight years, with myterm to be completed by July 1, 2018. I have also been a member of the Council on Legislation executive committee for the past threeyears.

During these long years, I have been committed to work on behalf of my fellow physicians, and ultimately the patients, at all levels oforganized medicine. I was recognized by the AMA and received the Leadership Award and was the recruiter of the year for twoconsecutive years.

I believe I am in an excellent position to help forward our agenda of the SPS and our AMA, and to help to achieve the goals ofpracticing physicians, and ultimately the health of patients.

That is why I would like to represent SPS as a delegate to AMA.

2018 AMA-SPS Governing Council Election Ballot

Richard L. Atkinson, MD - (Please read his biosketch.)

Candidate's Statement of Interest:

This is a critical time for health care and for physicians in America. The field of medicine is vastly different than when I entered 50 yearsago, not only in the advances in knowledge, but in what I can only consider deterioration in the ability of physicians to place theirpatients at the forefront of their attention. Physicians now have less time with patients, more administrative and legal vulnerability, andless financial security. Young people entering medicine have great stress and huge debt. We cannot return to the past, but we canfocus on improving the physician experience, enhancing the patient experience and satisfaction, and continuing the high quality oftreatment that our patients deserve. This will require thoughtful assessment and innovative solutions to deal with government, insurance companies, and others with a stake in medicine. I have served as President of The Obesity Society, the American Society forClinical Nutrition, and the American Obesity Association as well as serving on the Board of Directors of the World Obesity Federation. Iwas an advisor to multiple government agencies including NIH, HHS, VA, FDA, USDA, DOD, FTC, and NAS. I have worked in multipledifferent disciplines of medicine and been very active in establishing policies and influencing governmental and other agencies. Nowthat I am no longer treating patients, I would like to continue to contribute by providing counsel from my experience over the years tothe foremost medical professional society, the AMA.

Endorsement: The Obesity Society

Barbara S. Schneidman, MD - (Incumbent - Please read her biosketch.)

Candidate's Statement of Interest:

I have been involved with the Senior Physicians Section (SPS) as an educational program speaker, a governing council member, aschair, and I am currently immediate past chair. I have been a good fit for the position because my professional career focused on theareas of medical education, licensure, and board certification, with a focus on lifelong learning and fitness to practice. I have privatepractice and executive experience with three national medical organizations that add to my qualifications.

I have a history of working on the issues the SPS holds important, including senior physician competency, fitness to practice andphysician health. I am running for the delegate position in order to continue my work with the SPS and the AMA Senior Physician WorkGroup, the committee that is looking at senior physician competency. I currently serve on the Admissions Committee of the Universityof Washington School of Medicine and remain involved with several national medical organizations. I have had leadership experiencein multiple national medical organizations as well as having been an alternate delegate and delegate to the AMA from the AmericanPsychiatric Association.

In addition to my leadership experience, I bring energy and commitment to medicine and our AMA. Since the focus of the SeniorSection is on continuing competency for senior physicians and physician health, I will be a strong contributor and advocate to theseefforts in order to achieve this important mission, and I ask for your support and vote in my bid for election.

Ronald C. Thurston, MD - (Please read his biosketch.)

Candidate's Statement of Interest:

I would like to continue to maintain physician excellence and improve health care policy. I believe this is a professional responsibility forall physicians. I have served in a variety of active member and leadership positions in local, state and national medical organizations. I will bring my experience and perspective to the Senior Physicians Section.

I started off as a corporal in the U. S. Marine Corps, where I learned it was a good idea to go to college, and where I learned that it wasa great idea to go to medical school. I have been learning ever since.

While maintaining a solo/small group practice, I learned that somebody needs to keep the roof up so that we can practice medicine. And it’s us.

I have been involved in organized medicine throughout my career, with special attention to policy and politics. I am past-president ofthe Southern California Psychiatric Society and the California Psychiatric Association, and representative to our national assembly. Iserved as president of our county medical association and I am just finishing a 9-year term on the Board of Trustees of the CaliforniaMedical Association.

Ronald J. Clearfield, MD - (Please read his biosketch.)

Candidate's Statement of Interest:

My interest in the representational aspect of organized medicine stems from my conceptualizing and implementing a unique branchmedical society with three parent county societies. This effort led to my being a member of the AMA House of Delegates, representingPennsylvania, for sixteen years.

During that time I served eight years on the Council on Constitution and Bylaws, two as Chair, where I helped define and clarify theroles, responsibilities, and relationships of all segments of the AMA. I subsequently served seven years on the Council on Ethical andJudicial Affairs, where I was involved with the adoption of a revised and modernized AMA Code of Medical Ethics and worked on anOpinion regarding the determining of competence throughout a medical career.

As a retired physician, I recognize the need to represent the perspective of the Senior Physicians Section in the deliberations of theHouse of Delegates. My broad experience in the AMA allows me to understand the historical and practical methodology of Houseprocedures. I believe this knowledge, along with my familiarity with both the community and academic practice of medicine and recordof innovation, would allow me to contribute to House and Section deliberations on current issues and also future issues that willinevitably arise. I hope to merit your support for the position of SPS Alternate Delegate.

I am interested in many issues important to senior physicians. These include successfully maintaining the practice of medicine as weage, assuring excellent health, being a good patient, preparing for retirement and retiring with contentment.

I was director of the Massachusetts Physician Health Services for 15 years. I cared for many older physicians and developed expertisein the medical, mental health cognition, substance use and other issues facing the aging physician.

I presented at conferences on physician health and co-authored peer review articles. I have attended the AMA HOD meetings for 11 years, increasing my interest and involvement at both the national and local levels forsenior physicians. I have also been a regular attendee at the AMA SPS meetings for many years.

2018 AMA-SPS Governing Council Election Ballot

James F. Burdick, MD - (Please read his biosketch.)

Candidate's Statement of Interest:

In the Senior Physicians Section of the AMA Governing Council I will strive to help doctors meet technical and administrativechallenges for the benefit of patients and our profession. Doctors are subjected to meaningless requirements for them to certify theirquality. I hope to be a force in the AMA for strong convenient data that will be most in line with patient needs and allow us to return toour professionalism.

I began kidney and liver transplantation when immunosuppression was dangerous, before calcineurin inhibitors. I remain involved inexperiments to improve transplantation, providing me continuing experience with drug development reality, valuable to serving thisAMA role.

I was President of the OPTN contractor, UNOS, and later, as a Federal employee, was the Director of the Division of Transplantation inHRSA, HHS. I am on the Board of the Baltimore City Medical Society. This experience has provided me with a background in policy, systems and data analysis.

I authored a book, Talking About Single Payer. That prepared me to help the AMA with any options, including a national healthprogram. From this, I am convinced that doctors must be given, and must accept, an explicit authoritative role in care decisions usinga national transparent professional board protected from partisan political interest.

As the dominant U.S. medical professional society, the AMA must provide insight and guidance to our country regarding medicaladvances and systems in this challenging time. I believe we can do this and I stand ready to serve that commitment.

James J. James, MD - (Please read his biosketch.)

Candidate's Statement of Interest:

Given the increasing frequency and severity of hurricanes, mass shootings, wildfires, emerging infectious diseases, nuclear/radiationconcerns, etc., I believe it is incumbent on the AMA to reestablish its leadership in Disaster Medicine and Public HealthPreparedness. I believe the Senior Section representing our most seasoned and accomplished members is best suited to accomplishthis mission. As Editor-in-Chief of the leading peer-reviewed journal in the field, a retired general officer with 26 years of active dutyexperience, the past Director of the Miami-Dade County Health Department and the Director of the AMA Center for Disaster Medicinefor ten years, I believe I have the qualifications, credibility and experience to lead this effort. With your vote, we can do this together.

Candidate's Statement of Interest:

Health care is undergoing breathtaking scientific and technological change, while health care costs are considered unsustainable, withhuge challenges ahead in achieving comprehensive health access and equity, and in reducing variation in quality to improve outcomes, longevity, and the national health status. I would be honored and excited to be able to serve my profession through the AMA HOD inhelping to address the challenges ahead for patients and physicians, as well as to seize upon the opportunities for positive change forhealth and health care in the decades ahead.

H. Randy Reeve, MD - (Please read his biosketch.)

Candidate's Statement of Interest:

In May of 1972, I graduated from medical school. Two weeks later one of my classmates committed suicide. In July of 1976, I startedmy urology residency, and within two weeks one of my chief residents in urology committed suicide. In 1995, one of my physiciancolleagues committed suicide.

According to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, 300-400 physicians take their own lives every year, the equivalent of twoto three medical school classes. We lose a doctor a day to suicide. Compared with the general population, the suicide rate is 2.27among female physicians and 1.41 among male physicians (Am J Psychiatry. 2004; 161 [12]: 2295-2302).

If elected, I will visit every AMA section and gather ideas regarding physician suicide prevention. I would then put these ideas togetherand draft a resolution regarding how our AMA can help decrease the number of physician suicides.
