MissionOur mission at Internal Creations is to develop leadership, self-sufficiency, and life skills through classical guitar education to create responsible, fearless and independent leaders.

Vision

Internal Creations aims to obtain and revive an abandoned theater in Manhattan to become a music school and venue for all communities to come in, share, learn, be exposed and empowered through instrument learning and performances, primarily aimed at the underprivileged and underfunded demographics of New York City. Many parents or individuals cannot afford private instrument instruction for themselves or their children, but do have a lifelong interest and motivation for the field. Many people never have a chance to pursue the field of music due to lack of finances and Internal Creations dreams of creating opportunity for everyone no matter what the financial situation is in order to combat classism, which will strengthen unity among races and ethnicities in our communities.

Philosophy

Internal Creations is dedicated to helping develop our youth and community’s unique perspective of life and positive change through learning an instrument. Our programs are built and constantly enhanced to reflect a model of self-sufficiency and community building. Within this model, Internal Creations first addresses the technical and musical approaches to music and performing as an ensemble while simultaneously exposing and implementing life skills that correlate to music learning. We believe in the universal pillars of positive change we call the “Three P’s”, which stand for Patience, Persistence, and Perseverance. In our educational programming, Internal Creations provides instruments and professional musical instruction to NYC public schools taught through our curriculum that is bolstered through encouragement and empowerment,

Page 5: 2018- 2019 Educational Report - internalcreations.org · Internal Creations is dedicated to helping develop our youth and community’s unique perspective of life and positive change

focusing on supporting students when personal and musical challenges arise to accompany them on the journey of learning.

We make it a point to expose participants to motivational talks and inspirational videos on universal success and traveling the road to a life of freedom of fear to provide an awareness of greater possibilities and wider perspectives in the world. Additionally, all program participants are required to perform annually as an ensemble and provide multiple community service projects every year. This model recognizes that self-development and sufficiency is a lifelong practice just as learning an instrument and its relation to the experiences that life will bring. The classical guitar has a wide impact to make a positive social, emotional and professional change and is an effective way to introduce the fine arts to those who have never been exposed, which has drawn the attention of many young students to pursue fine arts study at an accredited four year university.

HighlightsintheNYCguitarworld

1) Exposing classical guitar with free community concerts

This year, we began our new program initiative to provide concerts for the community with the purpose to unite and expose our New York City neighborhoods the power and beauty of the classical guitar. We aim to provide these concerts in communities that do not have the opportunity or exposure to see a live performance due to financial hardships or lack of knowledge to musical performances in their area of residence. We noticed that many people think the only place to experience these concerts are at venues such as Carnegie Hall or Lincoln Center and are deterred by the stature and ticket prices of these venues. With the exposure of these community concerts, we unite everyone regardless of background to enjoy live music and experience relaxation for the soul provided by this style of music.

We began this initiative on October 29, 2018 with the help of our newest partners at Euro Strings who introduced and facilitated an extraordinary classical guitarist named Jesse Flowers to us at Internal Creations and our partners at Austin Classical Guitar in Austin, TX. In NYC, we presented Jesse Flowers to the Bronx community at Roberto Clemente State Park with the help of our long time friend, John Doherty. Jesse performed wonderfully to a very small and intimate group as expected. Though we had invited many people and elected officials of the Bronx districts, only a handful of people came out to enjoy the marvelous concert. However, this did not discourage Jesse or anyone in the Internal Creations camp because we understand that many people are not aware these events are happening, or do not know how to approach these types of invitations. That is why we are here, to expose and educate our people to know what is possible and available to us all in this world. Here is a link to Jesse’s beautiful performance:

Our second and third community concert was held on April 17 and 23, 2019 with the outstanding Italian guitarist, Emiliano Verrino. Our previous guest, Jesse Flowers, who remembered his experience with us in October, highly recommended Emiliano to connect with Internal Creations since he was coming to the United States for the first time ever. We are so honored to have provided an outlet for Emiliano to have his first U.S.A. debut performance in NYC. Emiliano performed for our Bensonhurst, BK community at Leaders High School on April 17th, which had a strong impact on the Internal Creations students, staff and families that were present. Our students became inspired and learned more about the classical guitar an its discipline. The growing attention to these events began growing organically as projected. After the April 17th performance, we had scheduled a performance in Manhattan at Civic Hall thanks to our event coordinator, Jabari Noel who made it all possible. The number of attendees grew from a handful of people to a total of 22 people who filled up the chairs at Civic Hall. The crowd was full of special people who shared their love and unity with us including the granddaughter of composer, Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, who learned of Emiliano through our promotions and event with Jesse Flowers back in October. Wow, that is amazing musical history that was with us on April 23rd! This not only came as a surprise to us, but also made Emiliano’s U.S. debut much more special and memorable. See Emiliano’s debut performance in NYC here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=up0OwZTa0tA

As said before, these community concerts are to unite people and spend an evening of love and harmony. There were so many of the audience reconnecting with past friends they have not seen for many years. That was not planned, that just happened when like-minded energies come together for a common cause. Just as we teach our students in our education programs, patience, persistence and perseverance make visions come to life and create special moments that are priceless. We as adults must model and show our youth what love, respect, and dedication can provide when people come together and be in harmony.

2) Expansion of guitar education programming

This fiscal year, we were very fortunate to maintain our programs at Leaders High School and Transit Tech High School thanks to the Vans Give a Band Grant and the support and trust from the leadership in these schools. Along with the recurring programming, we were able to improve upon these programs and begin our Rock Band initiative at Transit Tech High School and Leaders High School, which serves more students who already play other instruments besides guitar and can have an outlet to create music. This allows for more students to become involved in music making and learning the leadership, self- sufficiency and life skills taught by our mentors, which are applied by our curriculum. Though it is a different version of music making, the fundamental concepts of becoming fearless, and independent and responsible individuals.

We are thankful for being able to expand our programming to Multicultural High School where we once had a program in the beginning stages of Internal Creations. It has been so beautiful to reconnect to the Multicultural High School community as it has given us an opportunity to continue working with a demographic of students that just immigrated to this country and are new to the English language and the culture of the United States. These students and staff teach us about their culture on a constant basis which fuels our musical itch to learn and perform traditional Spanish music and teach the students about the different types of American and European compositions to expand all of our knowledge. These students have a respect for the guitar as it is a centerpiece in Spanish music and they show how much they love it by their dedication throughout the year. The progress these students have made brings the Multicultural High School and Internal Creations community so much joy and pride, which was shown through their performance.

3) Community Service

On April 18th, our Transit Tech students were going about their day as usual and unbeknownst to them, were going to demonstrate their long time preparation and discipline by having an impromptu performance requested by the principal for New York State Senator Julia Salazar. At 9 am, the students in the Transit Tech Guitar Ensemble were called out of their classes to rehearse and then execute a performance at the drop of a hat without their instructor being present, but instead of fearing such an immediate ask for performance, these brave students demonstrated their life skills of self-sufficiency, fearlessness, independence and leadership and got together for a self-lead rehearsal and executed a beautiful performance of 5 pieces they have been working on for Senator Salazar. These are the moments that measure the success of our programs; there is no tangible way to measure these results besides being there to experience them. We are so proud of these students for their dedication and bravery, we know it is never easy, but you did it!

4) Newest partnerships

Every step forward is made possible by our fruitful relationships with our partner organizations that help us achieve the goal at hand. We believe in working together at all times to make an effective impact on our communities and that is why we are grateful for everyone who believes and joins us on this mission. We are pleased to say welcome to our newest partnerships with Euro Strings and Reverb Gives! With Euro Strings, we are working together to provide concert and educational outlets for their competition winners overseas here in NYC with the mission to provide these concerts in untraditional venues. Our first guest and their competition winner was Jesse Flowers whom we hosted on October 29, 2018 at Roberto Clemente State Park and then sent off to Austin, TX to perform with our partners at Austin Classical Guitar. Our partnership with Euro Strings will allow for more unifying community concerts to take place in NYC and provide these wonderful artists an unforgettable New York experience. Plans for our next Euro Strings competition winner are already in process and will be joining us in February 2020.

https://eurostrings.eu/

Our second partnership came about thanks to our longtime partner, Hungry For Music, who recommended Internal Creations to none other than Reverb.com who has just formed their foundation, Reverb Gives. Reverb Gives helped provide much needed materials through In-Kind donations (Reverb Bucks) to our programs such as music stands, guitar racks and more. They allowed us to change a student life that has an interest in audio engineering and production by helping provide a recording set that he may use to record the programs rehearsals, concerts, and school events with professional equipment. This is what we mean by working together to create a strong impact and change the lives of our youth. It is belief and action like this that makes partnerships strong and efficient. We are proud to welcome Reverb Gives to the Internal Creations family!

Whatdoesitmeantohavea“familybased”curriculum?

Though we wrote about our family based curriculum in our prior annual report, it is central piece of our programming that helps students understand social emotional learning and maturity. When you are family, many times, there is unconditional love regardless of the circumstances and our students feel this in their time of need and success. Having students of different backgrounds come together in a classroom for one common cause is amazing in itself, but when they learn how to love and respect one another regardless of age, race, religion, ethnicity, or sexual orientation, it echoes beyond the classroom and that love reciprocates into our society making for a better world.

When students feel the understanding of what it is to show empathy for others, establish positive relationships, make responsible decisions and work with each other to manage emotions and goals, it makes a difference in how they view the world. This compassion and diligence becomes a part of their everyday life and as they mature into adulthood, they can build upon these skills and become fearless, independent and responsible citizens. Just as we learn in families, there is always a balance of positive and negative circumstances that shape us into the individuals we eventually become and it is important to teach our students about the balance of life. It is a disservice to our youth to just show the positive side of life and preaching a false lens of a utopia that does not exist, rather, we must teach them in this family setting how the negative influences the positive and vice versa. Our youth need to understand that the only way we know beauty is because we know ugly, and we know dark because we know light.

These are deep topics to speak on, but it can be adjusted to something they can relate to that is not so “scary”. Having a family based environment allows for these students to be exposed and learn about these life skills in a safe environment where these topics are merely to gain knowledge and they know nothing will happen to them. That is the importance of having a family based curriculum, to create a safe haven where students not just learn how to play music, but also learn about life in an environment where they trust, respect and love one another regardless of their perspective.

Thechallengeswehaveencountered

We all know what it means to feel growing pains in a physical way as we are developing from children to adulthood, but who knew you would actually feel it as an organization as well. This fiscal year had its fair amount of “growing pain” challenges that we, as your public servant, would like to share with you. These challenges came in many forms, ranging from professionalism to organization growth and each one with a different level of discomfort. However, we are an organization who practices what we preach to our youth and we view these obstacles as learning objectives instead of setbacks. As the great Frederick Douglass said, “If there is no struggle, there is no progress”.

What does a partnership and collaboration mean?

One of our most heartbreaking and biggest challenges we faced this year was a new guitar education program that failed immediately. Now, though this may sound like it is total defeat, but it is not. Instead, we learned that simply because there are established organizations both large and small, it does not mean that they understand the roles they must play when it comes to collaborations and making an effective impact. This is the perfect time to speak on this topic and understand what it really means to work together!

What is the definition of a partnership? Great question! The Merriam Webster’s dictionary defines it as “a relationship resembling a legal partnership and usually involving close cooperation between parties having specified and joint rights and responsibilities” Now, that does not mean much more than just two or more people being involved in a common goal who have the same rights or responsibilities, and that is why we must be able to understand what collaboration means. Collaboration is defined as “to COOPERATE with an agency or instrumentality with which one is immediately connected” or “the ACTION of working with someone to produce or create something”. The words “cooperate” and “action” are emphasized because both members of a partnership should be actively working together to make something work or come to fruition, which we learned the hard way that some other organizations are not willing to act on.

Communication

There is a reason why that specific program did not flourish the best way it could and the majority of it has to do with lack of communication. Unfortunately as we can probably all attest to, with so many vehicles of communication available, communication itself has become worse over the years. Besides the vast amount of social media platforms, there is email, text messaging, fax and the good old phone call, which for some reason never get a reply. The point is, that when communication lacks, work cannot get done effectively and efficiently. In collaboration, it can mislead one party and will keep it guessing as to how it can approach and fulfill its mission especially if that party is the guest at a school or organization. With little to no introduction to the schools community and no reinforcement of the program being offered how are students supposed to 1) know that the program exists and 2) understand that the program is valuable, if the school itself ignores it as well? It does not make sense, especially when the establishment is around

Page 13: 2018- 2019 Educational Report - internalcreations.org · Internal Creations is dedicated to helping develop our youth and community’s unique perspective of life and positive change

the students 5 days a week /40 hours a week and the guest organization sees the students only 2 days of the week for 4 hours total. How can we expect a program to thrive if the “partner” also does not show interest? It can’t, because the youth are a reflection of us adults, and if we do not care, they will not care. That is something that we all need to understand and take action in order to guide our kids the right way. There is a difference between “forcing” students to participate in a program and “guiding” them to participate in a program. The life skill of accountability is extremely important to be taught, modeled, practiced and reinforced for students’ lifelong successes.

Community concert awareness and attendance

In New York City we are aware that there are tons of events that happen every single day and it can be difficult to keep up with everything that’s going on in such a busy city that never sleeps. However, the majority of people in outer boroughs think that these events, especially for classical music, occur only in Manhattan in places such as Carnegie Hall and Lincoln center and an expensive ticket is required to attend. With our community concert programs in partnership with EuroStrings, we are working to change that mindset and expose people in under resourced communities that it is available to everyone and to explore a different area of music with the classical guitar. Due to lack of exposure and support of different styles of music in these communities, many people tend to ignore the opportunities being presented because they are not “popular” or viewed as anything valuable.

The concept of coming together for exposure is extremely important because many times in these communities, people do not know that these opportunities exist that can possibly help change their lives. Believe it or not, awareness to many opportunities, in this case, classical guitar music, is not common, as we would hope unless it is advertised in popular media. The goal is for those people in the community who do enjoy classical music and attend these events, show how valuable it is by actively inviting and engaging their fellow community members who may not even know what is going, to attend these events. This can open a door of possibilities for communities to congregate and become united. In my experience growing up in New York City, there was much information that I was unaware of, and no outlets that exposed me to them even though there were people around me who knew of these things. As conversations continue with people in these under served communities, the same rhetoric is said when it comes to not knowing about any services, events or information that is in their community. It is our job as organizations to let people know what is out there and encourage community members to expose these services and opportunities. We believe education and knowledge is the best asset we can provide our communities and a way to make a substantial difference to motivate and improve action towards unity and healthier communities.

Page 14: 2018- 2019 Educational Report - internalcreations.org · Internal Creations is dedicated to helping develop our youth and community’s unique perspective of life and positive change

What’s next for Internal Creations in 2019-2020? Juvenile Detention Centers This next fiscal year, we are working on expanding our guitar education programming and offering it for incarcerated youth in juvenile detention centers with the help of organizations, Artistic Noise and Friends of Island Academy. This will be made possible through their partnership and the alliance of the New York City Department of Corrections and Department of Probations for re-entry programs that allow youth to participate in the programming outside of the detention facility. This initiative was inspired by the amazing work done by our partners at Austin Classical Guitar, who have successfully been able to provide a for-credit guitar program for incarcerated youth at Gardner Betts Juvenile Detention Center that has changed the lives of many young people. Though it will be a new initiative for Internal Creations, we know it will be successful because we are not doing it alone, we believe in all of our partners coming together to make a difference in our NYC youth and the proven success from our partners will allow for success for Internal Creations programming at these juvenile detention centers. Community Guitar Ensemble in Washington Heights, Manhattan Teaching guitar in our NYC schools has been our biggest joy since we began our programming back in 2012 before Internal Creations was incorporated. Thanks to the love and support from the schools, now we are aiming to spread our reach and open our guitar ensemble programs to the entire local community! The question of why we are aiming to begin our community guitar ensemble is answered by first realizing the capacity needed in order to have an instructor in many different schools, organizationally, it would be most efficient to have 1-2 instructors serving an entire community in different districts than having 1 instructor per school. The second reason is to extend the opportunity to a greater number of youth whom attend different schools across the city that live in Washington Heights, the home of Internal Creations. This enables for us to serve youth who may not have Internal Creations music programing in their school and also extend our reach to adults in the community who wish to learn guitar and music if they never had the opportunity when they were younger. The final reason would be in connection to our juvenile detention center initiative. The goal is to be able to provide a location that participants in the NYC juvenile justice re-entry programs can volunteer and continue to grow and implement positive change in their life to successfully renter society with a purpose and creative outlet to keep them out of trouble in the future. We believe this can build a strong bond in our community because as music naturally brings us together, the participants will also be interacting with each other on a common theme, with no other worries except making music together. It will allow for parents and kids to become involved in a common goal, which can foster stronger relationships between the adults and the youth in our community. When Internal Creations provides this community ensemble, it will also provide a safe haven for adolescent youth to participate in to keep them off the streets during afterschool and weekend hours. Our curriculum will expand to also teach how to play cultural Latin music such as Bachata,

Page 15: 2018- 2019 Educational Report - internalcreations.org · Internal Creations is dedicated to helping develop our youth and community’s unique perspective of life and positive change

Merengue, Latin pop/rock and more which will be appealing to our community since it is 67% Hispanic. This can help our community by exposing the youth and adults to our services and many other services through local business and organizations that they may not be aware of for any other needs they may have. Ultimately, if we want to strengthen our communities, we must act as a community and join together in common causes. The same way politicians can hold town hall meetings and rallies; we can also unite people with music and provide an outlet to tackle problems by musically creating each other. We are working towards raising funds to allow this initiative to become reality and to finally have a location where Internal Creations can run its music programming outside of the school walls

FinancialData

Alongside all the wonderful programming we have had the privilege of providing to our communities. It has been part of our work to use 100% of our funds to keep our programs running and begin new initiatives that will benefit the community. We believe in transparency and letting the public know what is going on within the organization because we honor our trust with the people we serve and our supporters. In this fiscal year, 2018-19, Internal Creations was founded and incorporated there were many startup costs that the organization acquired in order to begin its work to the public. We are extremely proud to report that we still hold no financial liability at Internal Creations and all of our income has been used for our existing and newer programming initiatives such as our rock band and community outreach concerts. With your generous trust in our mission, we have been able to continue changing lives. Our organization is still a small, which only has our Executive Director and our 3 program instructors. The E.D. is receiving a very small administrative salary to continue the operations of Internal Creations running effectively and efficiently. As we progress, it is time to realize that more responsibility is taken upon the organization and its staff to ensure that our mission stays effective, efficient and honest and with that, we need to make sure the organization stays and grows in financial health and management. Key staff will be a necessary investment in the areas of development, accounting and program management as Internal Creations grows and finding the appropriate funding for these salaries will help us with solidifying our infrastructure. This year, we are planning to begin our fundraising plans in order to involve the communities we serve in the work that we do. We look forward to showing the public the services Internal Creations provide and how they have a positive impact on the people. We are so thankful for all of our supporters of all levels, without you, none of our work would be possible and a large amount of love and respect is given to you for being fearless supporters to a cause that can help shape our youth for a brighter future to come. Below are some diagrams of what our financials were for this past fiscal year.

Income Statement for the period 7/1/2018- 6/30/2019

Income Chart

As we can see in this diagram, our revenue has come mainly from the public schools that budget for our programming to be in their location. Our contributions incomes are both foundation grants and individual contributions, which we are working on building to further our strategic plans initiatives. As mentioned before, just because we are a non-profit, it does not mean non-profit organizations do not operate as their for-profit counterparts. It just means that the goal for the organization is to address a need and not profit from it allowing for selfless work that is geared towards the greater good. Resources go in and go out responsibly to make sure the mission is fulfilled. In our case, since our programs are in public schools for now, we charge the school a “fee-for-service” to cover our instructors program salary in order to make sure our mission gets carried out in partnership with the school. We as the other partner provide the programs with all program materials, supplies for our instructors and guest artists. The grants and contributions income allow for Internal Creations to cover operating expenses and provide the aforementioned materials for all our educational programming to make sure our programs are well equipped for success.

Page 19: 2018- 2019 Educational Report - internalcreations.org · Internal Creations is dedicated to helping develop our youth and community’s unique perspective of life and positive change

Expense Chart

This expense chart represents how the earned revenue is used to pay the instructors program salaries for teaching the program throughout the entire academic year. As in all organizations, the program salaries are usually the most prominent in the expenses because we need to make sure our valuable instructors get compensated for their time. This allows for our programs to be sustainable and have a strong retention rate with our teachers. Many will argue that non profits are a labor of love, however that is difficult to do in a city where people need to be compensated to keep a roof over their head. I always say, if our community is wondering how they will keep a roof over their head or how they are going to eat, the programs and mission ultimately suffer. Our next largest expense was the music equipment for our programs, which we are thankful for the support of Hungry for Music and Reverb Gives that provide in-kind donations for our programs, thus reducing the cash cost for us to cover operating expenses and further our initiatives. The majority of our expenses are geared towards our guitar education programs because our mission is geared towards developing leadership, self-sufficiency and life skills through learning the classical guitar for our young people and communities. We take contributions very seriously because your hard earned money is being entrusted to us to fulfill a need that will better our communities and our kids. That is why we are behind being 100% transparent with all our financials.
