LETTER FROM RITA MANCERAThank you for being there for Puente for our 20th year!

This was a powerful and impactful year at Puente. By far, I am most proud of the eighteen women who completed the two-year college program in Early Childhood Education offered by Puente and our partners. The language exchange program (Cafecito), loved by students and volunteers, continued building the united community we want on the South Coast, and Puente’s community health workers brought more services, screenings and information to the farms, ranches and nurseries in the region.

This year, we activated the local vote through voter registration and outreach. I will never forget the honor to have Dolores Huerta join our 20th anniversary celebration. She mobilized us all to vote and stay civically engaged!

Thanks to your generous support and investment in Puente, this year we also:

• Graduated our largest class of toddlers fully ready for educational success in preschool• Provided community members with information on their legal rights• Connected youth to jobs• Made college more affordable and attainable for local students• Started the process to become a trauma-informed organization• Alleviated the spending burden for low-income individuals and families• Led an unprecedented bilingual, bicultural, Town Planning Initiative• Activated a local rapid response network to support immigrant families

Este fue un año poderoso e impactante en Puente. De lo que más me siento orgullosa es de las dieciocho mujeres que completaron su programa universitario de dos años en Educación Infantil ofrecido por Puente y nuestros colaboradores. El programa de intercambio de idiomas (Cafecito), apreciado por estudiantes y voluntarios, continuó formando la comunidad unida que queremos en la Costa Sur y las promotoras comunitarias llevaron más servicios, chequeos e información a las granjas, ranchos y viveros de la región.

También activamos el voto a través del registro y la información a votantes y tuvimos el honor de contar con Dolores Huerta en la celebración de nuestro aniversario 20. ¡Ella nos movilizó para votar y permanecer involucrados cívicamente !

On the South Coast, one of the most serious threats to people’s health is invisible. Many locals struggle with chronic high blood pressure, as Puente’s Health Team knows from its outreach work.

“Our population is at risk for high blood pressure. We see it at the clinic a lot and it is a big concern,” says Vicente Lara, Puente’s Program Director.

But reducing blood pressure often requires lifestyle changes around stress, nutrition and exercise. And that starts with learning about solutions – which is why Puente was thrilled to partner with the American Heart Association for a blood pressure workshop for locals in May 2019.

Fifteen local adults diagnosed with high blood pressure attended the three-part workshop, called ‘Check. Change. Control.’ A Spanish-speaking community health worker taught them how to monitor their blood pressure. They talked about healthier culturally relevant ingredients for meals and strategies for getting more exercise. At the

end of the workshop, they all received blood pressure monitors.

Lara has already observed changes in people’s diet and exercise regimens. “More people started coming to our walking/running group, they joined the Zumba classes. And there are more conversations around nutrition,” he says.

Puente reached a major milestone in June 2019 when six toddlers graduated from its bilingual childcare co-op program into preschool, the biggest class ever. Puente’s Early Childhood Education Team marked the event with a large celebration. The boys and girls donned with little caps and gowns received special certificates as did their parents. The celebration drew 57 adults – relatives, teachers and volunteers.

“It felt like a huge thing for us. It told me just how much the community is involved with children’s education here, and how much they appreciate what happens in children’s lives,” says Arlae Alston, Family Engagement Director for Puente.

Puente founded the Sueños Unidos/United Dreams Cooperative in late 2016 to fill a chronic gap in access to high-quality childcare for local toddlers ages 18 to 36 months. The co-op is free for low-income families, and uses a personalized child-development approach to prepare kids for preschool.

“When I got here, people told me families needed childcare. But no one really believed it would happen. It was more like, ‘If you can do this, it would be a miracle,’” recalls Alston. Now the data shows that the children from the Sueños Unidos Cooperative are entering preschool highly prepared.

Investing in young children now builds sustainable individuals in the future.

Puente alcanzó una meta importante en junio de 2019 cuando seis niños pequeños se graduaron de la cooperativa de cuidado infantil bilingüe y pasaron al preescolar, la clase más grande hasta el momento. El Equipo de Educación Infantil de Puente marcó el evento con una gran celebración. Los niños y niñas vestidos con su toga y birrete recibieron certificados especiales, así como sus padres. La celebración reunió 57 adultos: familiares, maestros y voluntarios.

We all have experienced some type of trauma or chronic stress. Now Puente is using trauma-informed best practices across all our programs to help transform the South Coast community and change how we view behavior from “what is wrong with you?” to “what happened to you?”

In January of 2019, Puente contracted with Trauma Transformed and the East Bay Agency for Children to provide Puente and the La Honda-Pescadero Unified School District (LHPUSD) staff with Trauma-Informed Systems Training 101. In addition, a 10-person cohort from Puente and LHPUSD was formed to create a group of trainers.

In the near future, these trainings will also be available in Spanish as two members of Puente’s education team are also getting certified as trainers.

“The impact of generational trauma can be profound. It can inhibit good relationship building and the ability to trust, or in children, the ability to pay attention in school,” says Puente Clinical Director Joann Watkins.

Over the years, Watkins and her team have seen the effect that generational trauma has on entire families. Trauma impacts our DNA, so the intergenerational transmission of trauma can be passed on to our children. A systematic and preventive approach is what’s needed to stop the cycle and create new best practices on how we address trauma and chronic stress in our community.

The trainings were made possible by a grant from the Sand Hill Foundation, and the curriculum comes from HEARTS: UCSF Healthy Environments and Response to Trauma in Schools.

Todos hemos experimentado algún tipo de trauma o estrés crónico. PLANNING PESCADERO’S FUTURE

In March 2019, The Pescadero Town Planning Initiative culminated in an unprecedented gathering at Pescadero Elementary School. More than 200 South Coast residents spent a day together discussing and voting on their long-term visions for the community.

“People all throughout our community see the need for change and improvements and want to be involved,” says Rita Mancera, Executive Director of Puente. Last year, Puente, as part of the Sustainable Pescadero Collaborative, convened an all-volunteer Steering Committee consisting of community members, school representatives, trustees from The Pescadero Foundation as well as Puente staff to bring the effort to life.

Puente leveraged a grant from the Silicon Valley Community Foundation to fund outreach efforts and ensure a bicultural and bilingual process, which included hiring a Spanish-speaking consultant to engage Latino participants through focus groups.

On the day of the gathering, locals identified their top priorities: public use trails, new housing, a laundromat, a community center, a public pool, a town plaza, and solutions for water/septic issues.

The findings will now be used by advocates to press for change in Pescadero. They are also meant to help anyone who wants to start a business or invest in town.

“This was the little engine that could,” says Mancera. It was not a government agency that led this effort or funded it – instead our community banded together with one common goal.”

More than 200 community members came together to set their long-term visions for a sustainable Pescadero.

Brandon Marín started classes at his dream school, UC Berkeley, in fall 2019. Even before he got to campus, he had his ideal dorm picked out. But it wasn’t always easy for Marín, the son of Pescadero farmworkers, to imagine himself at Berkeley. That changed when he joined Puente’s Youth Leadership Development and Employment Program at the age of 14. Puente staff helped Marín believe he could take on the world. “Over the years, they’ve provided a lot of help with examples of careers to look into,” he says.

Not only that. When Marín struggled with math and science in high school, in addition to school resources, Puente staff found tutors for him. By the time he graduated, math and science were his strongest subjects.

Since its launch in 2007, 183 South Coast students have been part of Puente’s youth program. Data shows that students like Marín benefit most from consistent academic support, coaching, and job/life readiness skills over several years. In 2018, Puente was accepted into the competitive PropelNext program to transition its legacy youth program into a new program called IDEA, the Individual Development: Economic & Academic Program.

Puente’s Education Team will work more closely with the Pescadero High School staff on academic interventions and case management for 10th, 11th and 12th graders. Moving forward, Puente expects students will either matriculate into college or enter the workforce earning 20% above the minimum wage; increasing their earning potential during their lifetimes.

A NEW ‘IDEA’ FOR YOUTH SUCCESS

Since its launch in 2007, 183 local students high school and college students have received academic support, enrichment programming and paid internships. Puente provided scholarships totaling $106,186 during the last year.

Araseli Rico Villareal has been a permanent resident since 1986, when she and her husband gained amnesty under President Ronald Reagan’s Immigration Reform and Control Act. Her American children went to Coastside schools and grew up speaking English. But she never thought about becoming a U.S. citizen herself – that is, until President Donald Trump was elected.

“I wasn’t sure if he was going to allow legal residents to be here, and I wanted to make that permanent,” she says. She reached out to Puente to help her apply for citizenship.

Even documented residents have felt the chill of immigration sentiment in recent years, says Corina Rodriguez, Puente’s Director for Health and Community Development.

“I am overwhelmed with joy whenI see individuals after their naturalization ceremonies. There is a special glow in their faces,” she says. “They can now affirm this is in fact their land.”

Puente’s citizenship program offers community members one-on-one citizenship tutoring sessions with local volunteers, along with partial scholar-ships or zero-interest loans to cover the $725 government application fee. Since 2009, Puente has helped file 56 U.S. citizenship applications and provided tutoring to 98 participants.

Villareal passed her citizenship test and was sworn in as a U.S. citizen in 2018. Her twin sister is now in the process of applying, too.

Araseli Rico Villareal ha sido residente permanente desde 1986, cuando ella y su esposo obtuvieron amnistía bajo la Ley de Reforma y Control de la Inmigración del presidente Ronald Reagan.
