To improve people’s lives by mobilizing the caring power of Central Minnesota.

United Way of Central Minnesota connects resources to accelerate community wide solutions.

The United Way of Central Minnesota welcomed a new leader in 2018, Larry Olness. Larry’s breadth of United Way experience along with his innovative spirit led to many new opportunities for the United Way to have a direct impact in our community. He has also led a strategic shift in the way we communicate with donors and volunteers.

Our board of directors transformed itself in order provide better accountability and alignment of our key volunteer leadership with our key organizational initiatives. In addition to Governance and Community Impact, our board members now have a direct role in Workplace Giving; Affinity Groups such as Small Business United, Retire United and Young Leaders United; Planned Giving; and Volunteer Action. In 2019 the United Way, in conjunction with a partnership with Leighton Interactive, opened its first Volunteer Action Center. This Center is a central hub for connecting volunteers and provides space for hosting events, meeting with clients, and hosting interns, and offers access to an onsite volunteer connection portal, and more. While all of these changes were making the United Way stronger, we continued to be the safety net for our community in meeting basic needs, and rallied with partners to make a difference for Central Minnesotans around financial stability, education and health. United, we improved people’s lives by mobilizing the caring power of our many donors, dedicated staff, and engaged volunteers. Thank you, Central Minnesota!

Page 3: 2018-2019 ANNUAL REPORT LIVE UNITED

As the new President/ CEO of United Way of Central Minnesota, I have had the pleasure past of meeting with over 150 business and community leaders to learn about the challenges they face, the opportunities at hand, and why they believe so strongly in United Way. Additionally, I met with numerous agency leaders and individuals who are working towards or living through the situations we are addressing. I learned a lot in those meetings, but three things really stood out: acknowledgement, involvement, and belief.

First, there was an acknowledgement that we have challenges in our community that need to be addressed. This may seem obvious, but often rose-colored vision mars true progress, so the first step when moving forward is to acknowledge the challenge. Next, everyone wanted to get involved in helping to solve the issues and wanted to know what they could do to make a difference. This commitment of time and funds allows the idea of change to become a reality. Finally, everyone believed that there was a significant role for United Way to play in addressing the issues. As the support of our community is critical, the overwhelming support for United Way progress is reassuring.

United Way has been part of this community for 51 years and during that time, thousands of individuals, families, and children have had their basic needs met by receiving food and housing assistance. Children were better prepared to be successful in school because of efforts in partnership with the schools, and families have achieved financial stability because of the funds United Way was able to raise and allocate to programs quality programs in our community with measurable results.

My career with United Way includes 11 years at the United Way of Dane County in Madison, Wisconsin, and 13 years at the United Way of Central Florida in Orlando, Florida. I can honestly say that as rewarding as those experiences were, I am most excited by what we can accomplish together in Central Minnesota. I make this statement with enthusiasm and passion in our shared belief that Central Minnesota is the best place for everyone to live, work, raise a family, and retire.

Thank you for the opportunity to lead your United Way.

Larry OlnessPresident & CEOUnited Way of Central Minnesota

VOLUNTEER ENGAGEMENTDay of Caring Highlights United Way of Central Minnesota hosted Day of Caring on September 20, 2018. Day of Caring brought people together from across the community and made a positive impact through volunteerism.

Overall, more than 600 United Way volunteers completed 67 projects on Day of Caring – equaling 1,869 hours of service and an estimated dollar value to our community of nearly $51,547.

Beyond the numbers, some of the projects included: harvesting vegetables, construction projects, interacting with residents at long-term care facilities, packaging food and activities with children.

Thank you to all the United Way volunteers who helped make our community a better place to live and work. A huge thank you to UBS for being the Day of Caring event sponsor.

If you missed out on United Way Day of Caring and would like to coordinate a project for your company, community group, family, etc., please contact Mary Krippner at 320.223.7991 or [email protected]

Day of Action Highlights The walls in the new United Way of Central Minnesota Volunteer Action Center received a fresh coat of paint!

A Rainbow Play System was installed for Anna Marie’s Alliance so women and children can play safely outdoors.

St. Cloud storm drains were stenciled to keep our river water clean.

25 bowls were painted and will be given to youth who are staying at Catholic Charities Youth House.

Over 50 children had fun playing field day activities outside in the sun at Pleasantview KidStop.

Future children’s museum was cleaned to help with planning and development.

1872 Rolls of toilet paper were collected to be distributed to families in need this summer.

RETIRE UNITED Retire United directly addresses the older adult workforce population in our communities. By working with our workplace giving businesses, we are able to create a transition-type program for retirees who wish to remain tethered to our cause and efforts. It’s both an opportunity for individuals to participate in volunteer projects and support programs vital to the entire community. From a company’s perspective, it’s a chance to continue to reward loyalty and culture even through retirement.

Committee Members

Our goal is to always ensure our volunteers and supporters know of the opportunities presented and how we can best raise our hands together to continue to advocate and create change.

The group of 35 and under aged peoplesupport the work of United Way Central Min-nesota through fundraising, volunteer projects, and networking events.

This dynamic, tireless group is making lasting change across Central Minnesota and having fun along the way. It’s inspiring and a great reminder of what happens when we realize the collective power of network and shared vision.

To live better, we must LIVE UNITED.

We all know that giving to the United Way invests in community services dedicated to addressing our community’s most critical human service issues. And, as Leaders in Giving, we all set the standard for others to make a difference in the lives of so many in Central Minnesota. Last year, the United Way celebrated 51 years in the St. Cloud community. There is so much to commend: As Larry Olness joins the team as President and CEO, we ap-plaud him as the United Way continues to refine their mission in areas of education, income and health. The Neighborhood Resource Centers at Lincoln Elementary and Discovery Elementary continue to support families to increase parental involvement in school, decrease school transition rates and increase student attendance.

As workplace campaigns evolve, our Young Professionals group continues to inspire and innovate, staying connected to causes that engage emerging leaders’ passions. Additionally, our group of retirees also continues to grow, ensuring that our donors remain involved and informed no matter how their lives change. As we look forward to 2020 and beyond, the United Way of Central Minnesota is poised to advance the common good in more ways than ever. St. Cloud is a rapidly changing community. When challenges arise, the United Way continues to respond with both head and heart, supporting every family’s dreams of a better, healthier and more stable life. We’re completing our third year as your chairs and transitioning the position to Pat and Joy Plamann. Thank you to the United Way staff, the volunteers, and especially to all the Leaders in Giving. Thank you for advancing the common good for thousands of Central Minnesotans. Sincerely, Eric & Elizabeth ReisingerLeaders in Giving ChairUnited Way of Central Minnesota
