When the scribes of the Pharisees saw that he was eang with sinners and tax collectors,
they said to his disciples, “Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?”
When Jesus heard this, he said to them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician,
but those who are sick; I have come to call not the righteous but sinners.” (Mark 2:16-17)
Here we are, in the heart of winter, and we find ourselves in a Bme of transiBon.
Christmas, the Epiphany and the BapBsm of Jesus have past, and now we wait for the
coming season of Lent. We soon will experience forty days of preparaBon that will bring us
to the foot of the cross—to the crucifixion and resurrecBon of Jesus. This Bme of waiBng,
combined with the cold bleakness of winter, lends itself to much quiet Bme, introspecBon,
and self-examinaBon. I don’t know about you, but too much Bme with my own thoughts can be a dangerous
thing. If I’m not careful, I can find myself focusing on my flaws and imperfecBons, and this can lead to feelings of
unworthiness.
Thank God for the gospel to rescue me from despair! The above story comes right aSer Jesus calls Levi the tax
collector (who took the name MaMhew) to follow him. Tax collectors were outcasts in Jewish society, for they
were helping the occupying Roman Empire and doing their dirty work. And yet, here was Jesus, not simply
calling Levi to discipleship, but dining with Levi in his own home! What a scandal this must have been!
But Jesus makes it clear that Levi is just the sort of person he comes for: “I have come to call not the righteous
but sinners.” He has come to call me, and he has come to call you! Just like the rag-tag bunch that he made his
Apostles, each of you is fully sinner and fully saint— beauBful and loved in God’s eyes. Jesus invites us to follow
him, and he assures you that you are acceptable just as you are.
So, as we prepare for Lent, I invite you to prayerfully consider parBcipaBng in Zion’s Lenten Bible study, “The
Path of Discipleship.” I am honored and excited to be leading this program with Pastor Jerry Peterson. It will
take place in the Fellowship Hall between services Sundays during Lent, from 9:30 to 10:15am. Each session will
consist of short lessons and table discussions. We hope each of
you will join us and share your many giSs, to help make our
preparaBon for Easter a truly blessed experience.

You may not know which direcon to take in life, you may not understand
what your future holds, but God does. So, when in doubt, run to Him. When
we’re moving fast and furiously through life, we forget that God’s Word is not
only our instrucon book for life, but it also holds power beyond anything we
can imagine. The Bible is the very voice of God. And when God speaks,
miracles happen. So listen to His voice, do what He says, and your life will
start to transform in powerful ways.

WOW, hope everyone had a great Bme for the holidays. We have only 4
months leS for WOW. Where did all the Bme go, just when we were having
fun.
Soon Blackhawk Courts Farm n Garden will have delicious vegetables from
the hoop houses that the kitchen crew will fix; also healthy and nutriBous
food for the children at WOW. What a way to end the season with healthy
choices for the program. Also along with the vegetables YaMe Moore will
come to talk about the vegetables that he has in the hoop houses.
ValenBne’s Day is coming soon and ColleMe Buchert has started the kids working on their
cards and hearts so the kids can give them to someone or to hang them up in their room. How
exciBng this is for the kids.
Just to keep everyone updated, if all aSer school acBviBes are canceled due to the weather
then WOW program will be canceled too. Please stay tuned to the weather. I will call volun-
teers to let them know that WOW will be canceled.
I welcome everyone back and glad to see you all. The WOW program is sBll in need of volun-
teers if you are bored on Wednesday come and check us out.

ALL ARE WELCOME!
Thank you to EVERYONE for your conBnued support throughout all the many fundraisers we

We had an interesBng and lively discussion during our Coffee and ConversaBon on January
11th. We hope more of you will join us on February 8th
at 10:00. Kathy Rasch will be our
hostess.
The Women of Zion, WOZ, are teaming up with Chicks with SBcks and making scarves. This
grassroots project is popping up all over the US. People are making and hanging them all over
fences, trees, and even tying them on bike racks. They are free for the taking. If you need a
scarf, feel free to take one!
We thought we might try this. Even if you don’t knit or crochet, we will take gently used
scarves in good condiBon. We will start out small, just around our church and the Cornucopia
food pantry. If you have scarves to donate please drop them off in the office or give them to
Sue Drilling.
As always, please check the bulleBn board by the library for updated informaBon.
