GraduationRequirements

StudentswhosuccessfullycompletetherequirementslistedanddetailedbelowwillreceiveaCanisiusHighSchooldiploma.RequirementsexceedthoseestablishedbytheBoardofRegentsoftheStateofNewYorkforgraduationfromhighschoolinNewYorkState.Graduationrequirementsareexpressedintermsofcredits.Onecreditgenerallyequalsonefull-yearofstudy.Coursesthatmeetlessfrequentlyawardhalf-creditsandquarter-creditsasdeterminedbytheadministration.SummerSessioncoursesdonotcountascreditstowardstheCanisiusHighSchooldiplomaortowardstheminimumloadofseven(7)coursesperacademicyear.SummerSessioncoursesarenotcalculatedaspartastudent’scumulativeGPA.Toensurecompletionofgraduationrequirements,Canisiusstudentsmustenrollinatleastseven(7)courseseachacademicyear.PhysicalEducationcountstowardsthisseven-courseminimumduringsenioryearonly.ThePrincipal’sofficemustapproveanyexceptionstothispolicy.Absenceinexcessoftwenty(20)daysforanycoursemaywarrantfailureanddenialofcoursecredit.ThePrincipal’soffice,inconsultationwiththeDeanofStudents,makesdeterminationsregardingdenialofcreditinthecaseofabsenteeismexceedingtwenty(20)days.

SchedulingandCourseSelection Courseselectionfortheschoolyeartakesplaceduringthelatewinter/earlyspringofthepreviousschoolyear.Thecourseofstudyfollowedbyastudentduringhisfouryearsattheschoolisahighlyindividualized,contextualdecision,andtheschoolisdedicatedtoassistingstudentsinmakingthecourseselectionsmostappropriategivenastudent’sprogress-to-date,commitmentsandresponsibilitiesoutsideofschool,andcollegeandcareerinterests.AlldecisionsregardingcourseselectionaremadeinthecontextofCanisius’requirementsandastudent’sindividualneedsandinterests.Canisiusexpectsthatthecourseselectionprocessbetakenseriouslyandbedoneinconversationbetweenstudents,parents,counselors,andfaculty.Throughoutthecourseselectionandschedulingprocess,theobligationisonthestudenttoensureprerequisitesforcoursesaremet,toobtainnecessarysignaturesandpermissions,andtofollowupwithhiscounselor,facultymembers,andtheAssistantPrincipalwithanyquestionsorconcerns.Oncethecourseselectionandverificationprocessiscomplete(typicallybyMayorearlyJune),astudent’scourserequestsareconsideredfinal.Alleffortswillbemadetoscheduleastudentinhisdesiredcourses,providedhemeetsthenecessaryprerequisites.Nonetheless,studentsshouldbeawarethatsomecourseswillhaverestrictedenrollment,someclasseswillbecancelledduetolowenrollmentorstaffingissues,andsomecombinationsofcourserequestswillbeimpossibletoschedulebecauseofconflicts.Inthesecases,theschoolwillcontactthestudenttoresolvetheissue.Canisiuswillnotconsiderrequestsforspecificteachersorspecificdailyschedules.StudentsenrolledinanAdvancedPlacementcoursemusttaketheassociatedA.P.examinMay.TheCollegeBoardchargesafeeforeachA.P.examastudenttakes.
