"The Baker's Bit" On behalf of the M anageme nt , I would like to exte nd a warm welcome to our support and opposition this afte rnoon . Since the last issue of the " Port Prog " we 've played 5 games. The first of those was our 4th round tie against Blackburn United. The 7-1 scoreline was a fair reflection on the game and the players' attitude was first class. Another very pleasing factor was the players ' discipline. We show ed great restraint in the face of what you cou ld only describe as severe provocation.

We spelt out our aim at the beginning of the season . That was, pure and simply , promotion . That in itself woutd be a tremendous achievement, but of course we know from our 3 league defeats that this will not be easy . But our aim remains the same . Anything after promotion would be a welcome bonus.

Our attitude so far in the Scottish has been good . Now we must begin to set standards . By that I mean we must endeavour to play our gam e at a certain level. In past games we 've dropped this standard and made life difficult . Against Carnoustie we played as we should , w inning 6-1. In our next league game the scoreline looked good in print , Tayport 5 Blairgowrie 2, but in actual fact we played poorly. Some players definitley let themselves down but we got away with it. We were 5-1 up from the 1st leg of the P.A. Cup and our next match was the second leg at Brechin . It ended 2-2. We made the next round. No futher comment. •

Last week we followed Pollok 's trail to Balbeggie , returning with a 7-1 vict ory and a much improved performance . So last month has been kind with 3 league wins giving us 6 valuable po int s scoring 18 goals and pushing us into second spot in the league table . Getting back to today , it's the 5th round of the O.V.D. Scottish Junior Cup . Pollok Juniors are the side we do battle against for a place in the last 8. Pollok? "Never heard of them!"

The other week , as luck would have it , I was in Glasgow visiting an old aunt when I bumped into this giant with a black and white scarf round his neck , a handful of programmes and a pocketful of macaroon bars . As I looked up to him, " Get your programme here big man " he says. Even though I had no intention of going to the game , 1 thought " There 's no way I'm refusing this bear ". " Nae problem Goliath , keep the change ", was my reply . So there's me in the middle of Glasgow a fiver light in the wallet , and only this flimsy 20p programme of Pollok v Glasgow Perthshire to show for it. Reading the programme I Was interested to see Tayport got quite a spread.

I w as especially taken by the following paragraph . "Off icials from Tayport visited Newlandsfield last season for all the advice they could get on the Junior game . Aher showing such sound sense, it 's a pity they may have to be given a prac ti cal lesson to go with the theory already picked up. Such is life though .•

My reply must be, that, all through history we 've read of the mighty being defeated by the meek , which reminds me of the verse written by a meek laundry maid (Maure en Kellock) .

I gue ss you 've heard of the fable of David and his sling When that mighty guy Goliath thought that he was king, So Pollok heed this warning from another David and his team , don 't take things for granted , they may not be as they seem , with all your cups and medals, and many other charms, you may find you're crying in your beer , In the Champions Pub, the Tayport Arms. (Eat your heart out Jim Leishman - ed.)

The only thing I would lik e to add is a message to our committee and ou r support , they should be under no illu sion as to the task ahead, Peter , Ronnie and myself will give it our best shot and if the players respond and " set new standards " I'm confident that one of the 8 balls will have the name TAYPORT F.C.

DAVIE BAIKIE, Co-Manager.

TODAY'S VISITORS Pollok could reasonably be de scribed as the Glasgow giants when it comes to discus sing Junior football. Their Newlandslield Park would be the envy of several senior clubs and their set-up including the adjacent thriving social club is professional in every way .

Last seaso n wa s a disappointment by Pol lok's own high standards . They lost the Central Championship by a point and didn 't win any cups!

Junio r Scotland team boss Tom Reynolds was appointed ma nager fo r this season and the team's record to date is no-thing short of im pressive .

Colin Crichto n is the side's =-~--top sco rer with 21 goals and 'keepe r Brian Cassidy can boast 10 shut-outs. It's their defence whi ch is one of Pollok 's stre ngths.

Not that Pollok have been content to rest on their lau rels. A measure of th eir ambition was the recent signing of striker Peter Curran for a reputed four figur e fee from Kilmar nock . Curran was on the bench last week but cou ld make his debut from the start today .

Chairman's Comment I'm pleased to welcome Pollok's players, officials and supporters to the Canniepairt today for what promises to be a great game . Little did our committee representation think when we left Newlandsfield Park last May after being Pollok's guests prio r to joining the Junior ranks that the parting co mment from a Poll ok official , " Maybe see you in the Scottish! " would become reality in such a short space of t ime . We 've come a long way at Tayport since August and played a number of games which coul d be described as milestones. None more so than today's game which will surely draw the biggest ever crowd to the Canniepairt . Pollok are the biggest name in Junior Football (Auchinleck, eat your heart out!) and their unbeaten run since the start of the season emphasises the task which we have today. Dave and Peter have put together a more than useful squad here at the Canniepairt and I'm confident that we are perf ectly capable of achieving the desired result. Finally , I trust that the followers of both clubs have an entertaining afternoo n regardless of the outcome and if we repay Pollok 's hospita lity it's in the pavilion and not on the park!

• .,,n •n~ .... Whilst the Juniors do battle with Pollok this afternoon the club 's Amateurs are meeting D.C.F.E at Graham Street , Dundee for the third successive week in a second replay of a 4th round North of Tay Cup •tie . A place in the last eight is at stake and Tayport will be look ing to the experienced striking duo of Bruce Burnett and Steve Graham to see them through . Bruce has been with the club since he was 15-years -old and has consistently topped the scoring charts in recent seasons while Steve, with senior experience at Brechin City , Forfar Athletic and Cowdenbeath may not quite have the legs of old but has discovered a rich vein of goals since the turn of the year.

The Fife team have lost their go al touch in recent week s and , with the title now seem ingly a forlorn hope , the target must be the local cup competitions.

The Strollers rapid rise up the table suffered a hiccup against Carnoustie last week but a top five spot at the end of the season is not beyond them .

WHAT THE PRESS HAVE BEEN SAYING

.,If Tayport were to win , it would be a UB40 job for me !" ... we stand to lose a fair four figure sum after laying them at 200-1 . I can 't sleept at night ." Bobb Hogg of Edinburgh bookie P. R. Barrett quoted in the "Racing Post " 3011191

Evening Telegraph 6/ 2/ 91 " Blackburn Utd comm ittee took their wives up north for the OVO Scottish Junior Cup fourth round tie against Tayport . The wives went shopping in Dundee while their men went to the match . After a 7-1 defeat the men wished they had jo ined the wives in the shopping ."

OVO CUP BETTING P. R. Barrett , the Edinburgh based bookmakers (see " What the press have been saying " are offering Pollok at 4/6 to win today 's tie , Tayport are 3/1 and you can get 5/2 for the draw .

Juniors in Tayport is nothing new

Research has revealed that Junior football was very much alive . in Tayport 100 years ago with Tayport Union playing in the Broughty Ferry and District Junior F.A. League competitions were a rarity in those days, with Cup competitions being to the fore . When Tayport Union lifted the Association Cup in 1893 it would appear that football as w e know it was still in its formative years. West Ferry received a bye in the 1st round for example because Harriers XI had a run that day! A crowd of 200 assembled at Garden Reach, Broughty Ferry (wherever that might be) to watch West Ferry lose 9-3 to Ardenlea in the Semi -final. Goals certainly weren 't in short supply. When Tayport Union defeated Ramornie (Ladybank) inthe Davidson Badge on 27/12/ 1892 the press reported " Union were in magnificent form and waltzed round their opponents to the tune of 22 goals to nil" . And in a game on the Common v Ardenlea Reserves the newspaper reported "the game was a farce . Union, taking matters easy , had it all their own way, and ran out winners by 25-0" . Union's secretary was H. Williamson, Cowgate . Some other names from those days . Secretary of the Union Reserve team was Peter Rae who stayed in Ogilvy Street . Rosebank F.C.'s secretary was Isaac mathieson , also an Ogilvy Street resident and another official was James Dryburgh who stayed in Bridge Lane .

Rangers even complained in those days! When Union Reserves drew 1-1 with Rangers (Broughty Ferry) on Castle Green , the home side complained that Union had fielded three 1st XI players .

Today's Referee Today's referee is Jim Carlin, a member of the Edinburgh and District Referee's Association . A Grade 2 referee , Jim had charge of last season's Jun ior Cup Semi -final between Linlithgow and Hill of Beath . This is his second visit to these parts this week having been in charge of Monday evening 's Dundee Utd v Hibs Reserve game at Tannadice . Jim is married, stays in Linlithgow and is a solicitor by profession .

* Pollok purchased their ground at Newlandsfield Park in 1932 for £4,980 thanks to a loan from the Pollokshaws Co-op . * Newlandsfield Park's record attendance was in 1945 when 15,000 watched Pollok beat Fauldhouse. * Both of Pollok's cup wins were at Hampden Park. * Glasgow Junior side St. Anthony's sold their ground lease at Moore Park to Rangers for £100,000 . * The Auchinleck Fanzine " 3 in a row" alleges that 90% of Pollok supporters are old, wh ile the other 10% are very old!

It also alleges that Pollok turned down £1 m for their ground!

OVD SCOTTISH JUNIOR CUP

There's no denying the magic appeal of the OVD Scottish Junior Cup. The two ties in the last round between today 's visitors Pollok and Glasgow Perthshire attracted almost 3,000 paying customers. That's more than all last Saturday 's seven game Senior second division card put together and only a few hundred short of Wimbledon's home gate against Norwich last week. With th e weather relenting and allowing th e Cup card to go ahead last week , a number of issues wer e resolved . Biggest talking point was th e exit of holders Hill of Beath who were beaten at the third attempt by Maryhill , leaving Tayport as Fife's sol e cup survivors . Maryhill are in Dundee this afternoon to meet North End in one of the two outstanding fourth round ti es. The last eight boasts an impr essive li ne-up . Al ready in the hat are Newtongrang e Star , Arthurli e, Dunipace and Aberd een's sole survivors , Stoneywood . Auchinleck Talbot await the winners of Darvel v Forth and Bonnyrigg Rose meet th e winners from today 's t ie at North End Park. Glenaf ton, for whom the legendary Alan Rough is goal keeper/manag er, have to overcome Fauldhouse today . Fauldhouse scored an impressiv e 3-0 win over fellow East side Bo'ness in last week 's fourth round .

KICK-OFFlp ... .

The players who scored1.-" - '-"-------' th e goals in that famous Lochee vi ctory now wear th e Tayport colours. Graeme Irons hit two of the goals and co-manager Dave Baikie got the winner . Mel and Dave weren't the only memb ers of today 's Tayport squad in action at Newlandsfield that day . Ian Christi e kept goal and George Malone was at full back. Fate has brought th e quart et tog ether aga in fo r another crack at the Glasgow giants and th e Canniepairt faithful will be hoping that they will again be on the winning side.

SPONSORSHIP To get a Junior side underway takes a great deal of support and the Club are indebted to the following who have shown their confidence in the success of the venture.
