SELECTED WORKS: 2012 TO PRESENT
JOSH MINGSAIA
1 I Mings
Born in Columbus, Indiana, I joke that I had no other choice but to be an architect. I grew up surrounded by buildings designed by the Saarinens, Roche & Dinkeloo, Pei, Venturi, etc… and learned from these buildings as I experienced them - about the poetic, site relativity, publicity, inclusivity, and most importantly optimism for the future. Each building is the architect giving part of themselves back to the community. The lessons learned in Columbus shaped my views on architecture and fuel a desire to pay the gifts I received growing up in Columbus forward through my work - utilizing four core values:
WHY AM I AN ARCHITECT?
PRAGMATISM AND POETRYArchitecture should be both pragmatic and poetic, allowing the functional and spectacular to come together creating a building that conveys meaning. Without this meaning, architecture has no structure and cannot speak.
SITE RELATIVITY / DIALOGUEArchitecture should be site relative connecting to both history and context, creating a dialogue and connection with the environment in which it is
constructed.
INCLUSIVENESSArchitecture should be didactic in its construction and speak to its materiality,
allowing one to read the various layers of the building to create their own story.
OPTIMISMArchitecture should always push itself forward into an uncertain future, creating a work of lasting value not only for the present, but for future generations.

Inspired by the historic context and nearby First Baptist Congregational Church, the 62-unit, 5 story, McCrory Senior Apartments inserts a new modern building into the historical fabric of the rapidly-changing West Town neighborhood. Brick, cast stone recalling quatrefoil motifs found at the church, bays, and mural inspired by the stained glass of the church inside the two-story entry lobby create site relativity and dialogue with the surrounding neighborhood fabric. As Project Architect since mid-2015, I have been responsible for design and construction documentation, coordination, and day-to-day construction administration.

DORCHESTER ART + HOUSING
Dorchester Art + Housing Collaborative is a re-envisioning of the former CHA Dante Harper townhomes, which had fallen into a state of disrepair. The five building renovation revived 32 mixed-income rental units with 2-3 bedroom units and a new Art Center in the center of development programmed by the Rebuild Foundation. The Art Center creates an inclusive and inviting space for programming, creating and displaying art, and connects to the neighborhood. Finished in 2014, I was involved as Staff Architect for a year during construction administration, assisted with design and finish selections, and created presentation drawings.

GRAND CROSSING ART + HOUSING
Building on Dorchester Art + Housing Collaborative, Grand Crossing Art + Housing expands Rebuild Foundation’s capabilities in providing arts programming to the Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood. Utilizing vacant land in the neighborhood, a 3-story Art Space and Housing building along with additional housing and workshops bookend E 70th Street, creating three distinct and inclusive nodes of programming along 70th, tying the neighborhood further together. Additional housing is located adjacent to DA+HC and Rebuild’s future St. Laurence Arts Incubator. During July 2017, I was involved as Project Architect developing the overall urban plan and conceptual design of the sites.

PHIL B. CURLSMANOR
The first phase in the revitalization of the Swope/Mt. Cleveland neighborhood, Curls Manor serves as an optimistic beacon of future development to come. The 4 story wood-frame building consists of two wings with a central node clad in standing seam metal panels. Brick and fiber cement break down the massing of the building creating a dialogue with the existing smaller scale neighborhood fabric. An angled bump out forms community space for gathering and socializing. Beginning in 2015 with design development, responsibilities included code analysis, coordination with consultants and city officials, construction documentation, and day-to-day construction administration.

SPRING HILL SR.RESIDENCES
Spring Hill Senior Residences, located on a challenging site originally slated to be a big-box retail store, conditions including a berm blocking views from surrounding context and existing easements were navigated in creating site strategy - building on the Northeast corner of the site and distancing from existing big box retail. Brick, bays, cornice, and paneling in a Mondrian-esque pattern break up the mass of the building, creating dialogue with historical aspects of West Dundee’s downtown. From initial conceptual design in 2015, responsibilities include design, coordination with clients, consultants, specifications, leading junior staff, and day-to-day construction administration.

THE BURNHAM ATWOODLAWN PARK
Part of a master plan to revitalize the Cottage Grove corridor that was formerly the site of Grove Parc Plaza, The Burnham combines several functions under one roof - senior housing, management offices, and Woodlawn Resource Center. With the color of the precast concrete recalling the limestone at nearby University of Chicago, cladding panels were placed on the facade along with use of form-liners and thin brick break down building mass along Cottage Grove Avenue creating a dialogue with the scale of the neighborhood. Beginning in 2013 with SD, responsibilities included construction documentation and administration, along with participation in design.

PARKLINEROW
Parkline Row is a transit-oriented development situated along 157th Street and adjacent to the Oak Forest Metra station. A major unifying feature on the site is a “green screen” which incorporates pragmatic solar, shading, and water management systems in a poetic manner. This feature will use solar energy to power site lighting, provide shading at patio doors, and feed into an integral gutter system. Additional storm water management techniques will be used along the parkway. As project designer, my role consisted of design, modeling, and production of presentation documents for submittal to the Illinois Housing Development Authority.

For the last few years, the idea of giving back - be it through volunteering, teaching/mentoring, leadership, etc… has been a passion of mine. In many ways it aligns with my personal values. I grew up in a disadvantaged family and saw my mother and stepdad work hard and sacrifice to give myself and my siblings opportunities they didn’t have. I didn’t get to where I am today without some help, and now it is my turn to give back.

Another way I strive to give back is through writing and the passing of ideas and places that inspire me. From buildings in my hometown to buildings and sights seen on my travels, I learn about each place and strive to pass that knowledge along.

THE ART OFARCHITECTUREWith pragmatism often overwhelming the poetic working on affordable housing, a couple of years ago I turned to painting as a way to express myself and my views on architecture. Drawing inspiration from buildings I have been to that greatly inspired me, the task becomes translating their poetry onto canvas - challenging my creativity and forcing me to be painterly and poetic. From the northern parts of Norway to my hometown, each painting displays the poetry of each building and focuses on aspects of each project that inspire me.
