Welsh National Sailing Academy entry to The North West Structural Awards 2016Structural Engineers: WYG Client: YGC, GWYNEDD COUNCIL
2017 LANCASHIRE & CHESHIRE REGIONAL GROUP
TechnicalProgramme
Welcome20172017 promises to be an exciting year for Engineers in the North West, with numerous notableengineering projects currently underway. For those of you that are new to the Institution I hopethat this book serves as your guide to what’s on offer in our regional group over the comingyear. Once again we have an exciting programme on offer which the committee has workedhard to organise. Whether it’s a young members’ social, one of numerous interesting technicalmeetings such as ‘designing for counterterrorism’ or one of our regular CPD sessions, I hopethere is something for everyone. I would urge you to utilise all that’s on offer, and encouragecolleagues, peers and younger members of your teams to get involved too.
As a members’ organisation, the success of our Institution is completely down to the supportand voluntary efforts of us, the members ourselves. The Lancashire and Cheshire RegionalGroup is recognised as one of the most active regional groups. To continue our success ofenthusing, mentoring and developing young engineers and providing a supportive communityfor professionally qualified members, the committee is always seeking new people to contribute to the regional group. I would be delighted to talk to anyone about how they couldcontribute over the coming year.
Hello and welcome to the 2017 ‘Yellow Book’.

The President’sGreeting
It is a huge honour to find myself elected President of the Institution of Structural Engineers for2017, and I approach the task with pride and not a little apprehension. Our members performa vital and challenging role for society, planning, designing, constructing and maintaining thebuilt environment around us, and it is a privilege to be able to represent them and this wonderfulprofession wherever I go.
During my year I hope to focus on the wide responsibilities we all carry to all of society; responsibilities that go beyond merely ensuring the structures we design or assess are safe andserviceable. We need to aim for excellence in all its many forms, and not to settle for less, if weare to build the kind of environment that future generations will thank us for.
We also need to adapt to the rapid changes that are affecting the way we work in a seeminglyever accelerating manner. Modern digital workflows, for example, are transforming the way design offices function, and our challenge is to find ways for engineers to concentrate on whatthey are best at, leaving the computers to do the rest, so that we can make the most of thecreativity, imagination and innovation skills that make us who we are.
I look forward to an exciting year ahead, and to encouraging members to reach out toembrace the wonderful opportunities that our profession affords us.

WHO’S WHO2017
Hunter has been heavily involved in the Institution, sitting on the Regional Group Committee since2005. He is also a recently elected Member of Council, a past chair of the Region’s Young MembersGroup and sat for 6 years on the Young Members’ Panel. However, he is not just anInstitution-aholic! Employed by Arup, he has developed a specialism in historic structures. In ‘reallife’ Hunter is a keen supporter of the “special relationship”, being born in the US and moving to theUK 13 years ago. As part of his international jet-setting lifestyle, you will find Hunter sailing yachts, searching for his lost golf ball and playing soccer (sorry, football).
Jonny has been on the regional committee for the last five years. Born, raised, educated andnow living and working in Manchester, Jonny is dedicated to the North West. He is passionateabout building design, particularly contemporary architecture and likes to think of engineers asbeing a creative bunch. In his working life, Jonny is a director of a growing structural consultancywhere he leads designs for a variety of building structures. He is also a visiting university lecturer.Aside from engineering, he is an occasional and aspiring musician playing both the trumpet andpiano. Any other spare time he has he’ll be out in the hills and mountains on foot, bike, skis orhanging on rope!
The regional group committee is always keen to welcome new faces, particularly from chartered, technician or associate members. If you feel likeyou have some great ideas how to utilise those membership subscriptions, please get in touch with the group’s secretary. And who knows, maybe one dayyou’ll join the distinguished list at the back of the book!!

Looking back on 2016, we’ve had another successful CPD calendar, with allevents being well attended. It wouldn’t have been possible without the willingnessof our high quality speakers to dedicate their invaluable time and effort to theevents.
Looking ahead to 2017, the industry currently has a spotlight on the importance ofthe promotion of creativity and elegance within Structural Engineering. This can bea somewhat elusive topic to try and teach or learn. To assist our members withthis, we will be hosting a Creative Engineers CPD Event, which will be aimed at encouraging the development of these skills.
To complete the calendar, we will be running events on Composite Design, Structural Concepts and Temporary Works, giving us a great balance of technical, practical and holistic topics. In addition, the annual Routes to Membership event isbeing held once again in June due to the invaluable advice and guidance it provides.
It is imperative to us that our CPD events provide you with the knowledge and learning required to develop professional and technical competency throughout all career stages. Therefore, if there's a topic you, your colleagues or your trainees are wishing was going tobe covered by a CPD event, or even if you have a topic you would like to present yourself, please get in touch with our CPD Events Secretary via [email protected]. Your input andfeedback will be greatly appreciated!
CPD courses are usually £50 per delegate, but some are free.
