4. Details of Chapter activities since last report

We made only one activity this year. The details of the activity developed by the student

chapter are annexed at the end of the report. This activity was achieved on October 4,

therefore it was not possible to send the report before the date indicated, on 1 October. This

year, only two grants have been used:

a) Activity Grant Available

b) Optics Outreach Kit Used

c) Visiting Lecturer Available

d) Officer Travel Grant Used

The grant d), was used by the active member Sorayda Trejos in the last meeting of leaders

and of the great event of the SPIE optics and photonics realized in August of this year. The

elements that have the Optics Outreach Kit (grant b)), we use them to complement the activity

that we did on October 4 of this year. The grant a), it has not been requested by some time

situations of all the members of the chapter to carry out a great activity this same year. But,

we want to do it at the beginning of the other year, with new students from the university.

Therefore we will request it for the year 2018. The grant d), will be approached to be

requested, for a teacher that we invite as chapter, and the professor notified that I could travel

in December.

5. Details of planned activities for the future.

For the next year, we plan to recruit with students entering the university in February

2018. To increase and renew our active members of the SPIE UdeA chapter. We do not

currently have monetary funds, therefore, we developed an activity that did not require a

high budget. What we developed was with materials already available in our laboratories

and what was still available from past activities.

6. Financial information: Zero dollars currently ($ 0,0 usd).

7. Order of activity.

First, the children were given an induction on the subject of optics,

and what in the laboratory is developed, such as studies and research. Then all the

children were shown various optical experiences, the spectrum visible through diffraction

glasses, with some yoyos and some spinner (brought from the SPIE event), it was shown

how white is composed by several colors. As the colored light can travel through an

optical fiber, to illustrate how the information travels. Among other demonstrations.

Several of the elements with which the children interacted were a gift as a visit and good

behavior in the laboratory. In the laboratory of optics and photonics, real research is done

(Information processing (holography, encryption, compression), visual optics, non-linear

optics, application to materials.), which was shown, and illustrated so that the children

understood what is being worked in the laboratory, and all the application that can have

light in research, technology, and industry .
