WELCOME FROM THE GOVERNOR-GENERAL
There can be few better ways to spend a summer’s Saturday afternoon than relaxing in the grounds of Government House and enjoying the wonderful music of the Canberra Symphony Orchestra. This is exactly what the people of Canberra and beyond have been doing for 35 years—bringing their blankets, hats, chairs and picnic baskets and soaking up the wonderful sights and sounds that make the annual CSO Prom Concert a true highlight.
Headlining this year’s concert will be Guitar Trek, a local favourite formed in Canberra 30 years ago and who have established a well-deserved reputation as Australia’s premier guitar quartet.
Conducting proceedings will be the ever-popular Graham Abbott, who will be well known to ABC Classic FM listeners. As always, Graham brings his own charm and unique presentation style, one which perfectly suits the relaxed nature of this event.
For the first time, there will also be a family play area offering fun and adventure for the next generation of concert goers—and perhaps for a few adults as well!
A prior commitment to attend commemorations for the 75th anniversary of the bombing of Darwin means I cannot be with you, but I am sure it will be a lovely afternoon. So please sit back, relax, and enjoy the music and atmosphere of the CSO Prom Concert, the first for the 2017 CSO season.

SEASON 2017
WELCOME Thank you for joining us today at the 35th annual Shell Prom Concert; one of the original family music events in the Canberra calendar. The CSO is delighted to share this iconic picnic concert with you and I know you’ll join us in thanking the Governor-General, His Excellency, General
the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove AK MC (Retd) for opening these beautiful gardens to us—they are the perfect setting to enjoy special time with friends, family and fine music.
It is music that brings us together here, and music that brings us together around the world. In these times of uncertainty, music reminds us of the good that humans can achieve and that ultimately, we share this fundamental language. Who better to inspire us today than popular maestro Graham Abbott leading your CSO in this joyful concert and joining us to kick off their 30th anniversary year, Canberra’s legendary quartet Guitar Trek brings their exuberant voice to the Prom stage.
Whether you’re a veteran 'Prommer' or this is your first Prom, you should know that we would not be here today without the generous support of Shell Australia. The CSO is proud and honoured to have been partnering with Shell since 1980. Shell Australia’s loyal commitment to Canberra institutions such as the CSO, Questacon and the National Library of Australia has been transformative for the organisations and for the community, and we thank Shell for their important contributions to our cultural life. Thank you also to our MC today, 2CC Breakfast presenter Tim Shaw. His support for the orchestra, both on and off air, is greatly appreciated.
In 2017, the CSO is extending new opportunities for you to experience music with a difference. In partnership with the National Portrait Gallery, the CSO is launching an Australian Series of three concerts with cutting edge Australian music curated and hosted by eminent composer Matthew Hindson AM. Each concert also includes an after-hours tour of the featured NPG exhibition. Join us on 2 March for the very first Australian Series concert, featuring the quintet Arcadia Winds as they weave musical stories around the current Popular Pets exhibition. For more information and tickets, go to cso.org.au.
In Queanbeyan Park on 4 March the CSO is delighted to be part of the Queanbeyan Multicultural Festival—Carnivale, supported by Icon Water in association with the Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council.
Then pack your picnic, grab your dancing gear and come to Commonwealth Park on Sunday 12 March for the free Canberra Day Symphony in the Park concert—ABBA Live! Sing along to their top hits performed by the CSO and nationally renowned tribute band BABBA.
Our first 2017 ActewAGL Llewellyn Series concert at the end of March marks the CSO debut of esteemed Australian conductor Jessica Cottis and a welcome return by pianist Daniel de Borah with music by Rautavaara, Shostakovich and Beethoven.
Today, as with all CSO events, we thank the ACT Government, the Australia Council and all of our partners and donors for their generous support; and we thank you, our patrons, for being here and uniting with us through the joy of music.

He is a frequent guest conductor with all of the major Australian orchestras and opera companies, leading choral societies and numerous new and early music ensembles. He has conducted Messiah more than seventy times, with all the major Australian orchestras and many other organisations, and has given first Australian performances of major Handel works such as Athalia, Ariodante, Agrippina and La resurrezione, as well as conducting the Australian premiere of Handel’s complete Carmelite Music for the Adelaide Chamber Singers. Graham is a Life Member of the American Handel Society.
An experienced conductor of opera, Graham’s repertoire includes Fidelio, Aida, Lélisir dámore, Julius Caesar, Orlando,

He was also Assistant Conductor for the Australian premiere season of John Adams' Nixon in China at the 1992 Adelaide Festival and in 2001–2002 was Music Advisor to Chamber Made Opera in Melbourne.
A respected speaker and broadcaster Graham has been producer and presenter of Keys To Music on ABC Classic FM since 2003.
Most recently Graham conducted Don Giovanni for State Opera of South Australia, Messiah for the Queensland Symphony Orchestra and Canberra Choral Society, Bach's St Matthew Passion for Opera Queensland, Beethoven Symphony No 3 for Camerata of St John's and the Melbourne Chamber Orchestra, Adelaide Philharmonia Chorus, Sydney Philharmonia Choirs, as well as concerts with the Adelaide, Melbourne and Tasmanian Symphony Orchestras. GUEST ARTISTS GUITAR TREK
Now a much loved part of the Australian music scene, the dynamic Australian quartet Guitar Trek was formed in 1987 specifically to launch a guitar family project, which has rapidly attained the status of a major new direction in the guitar’s continuing new development into the 21st century.
With new Australian music at its heart, the group’s fresh, innovative and popular approach to repertoire has taken it across all musical boundaries, breaking the sound barrier between different styles and tastes in the process. The new music of contemporary Australians rubs shoulders with Led Zeppelin, JS Bach, music of the Spanish masters, unbuttoned Brahms, the Beatles, the Greats of the Renaissance, George Gershwin, the Gypsy Kings and the sensuous rhythms of modern day Brazil.
Audiences and critics alike have readily acknowledged the outstanding innovative significance of Guitar Trek’s work and the group has been still more highly acclaimed for the extraordinary energy, assurance and musical quality of its playing. “The instruments were played with magnificent sensitivity”, enthused one critic, “and the transcriptions and arrangements were brilliant. As for the players, their individual and collective quality, taken with their imaginative musical leap into the unknown, has given chamber music in Australia a new dimension.”
Guitar Trek’s performing activities has included many tours for Musica Viva, performing in the capital cities as well as the regional centres of Australia, including performances in Musica Viva’s prestigious ‘International Series’. Other Australian performance highlights include appearances at the Adelaide and Sydney Festivals, and the Darwin International Guitar Festival.
Their latest album, Serene Nights spans 150 years and a kaleidoscopic range of musical cultures and colours – all brought together through the beauty and eloquence of the guitar quartet. Guitar Trek’s previous five albums have been released on ABC Classics and Tall Poppies labels and their music also appears on many classical guitar compilation CDs. Overseas activities to date include highly successful tours of the USA, Eastern Europe, Singapore, Brunei, Thailand, the Philippines, Korea, Taiwan and Vietnam.

“Beatles! Wonderful concert, great arrangements, and the orchestra appeared to be enjoying it all as much as the audience. The smiling faces and the buzz of satisfied enjoyment as the hall emptied was a further testament to the undoubted talent of this great group of musicians - and their conductor. Thank you all for the joy you give us.” Lorraine Higgins Kerry Rooney

GIVE, so that we can do more!In addition to the thousands who attended mainstage concerts at Llewellyn Hall, CSO musicians performed at 67 separate events in 2016. CSO musicians have accompanied joyful moments and provided respite from
grief at the Canberra Hospital, delighted listeners during Hearing Awareness week, provided music to various charities and at monthly Painting with Parkinsons get-togethers. Albeit temporarily, CSO musicians punctuated the routines of kids in special-needs schools. Delightful!
By virtue of individual donations to the CSO’s HeartStrings program, the annual Tax Appeal and Subscription Donation campaigns, plus support from the ACT Government, CSO musicians played music to a great many people through our education initiatives and community outreach programs in 2016.
You, too, can help us play more music and lift the spirits of those in need. Whether it is $5 or $5,000, your support means we can do more of this in 2017.
