Your Goal
To explain and evaluate the potential impacts of a large music festival. This will help decision makers decide if a festival is beneficial to the residents
of Gisborne. 1: Create a report analysing Rhythm and Vines from a geographic perspective. This includes the following;
1: What is the purpose and significance of the event?
A: The purpose of Rhythm and Vines is... (consider money generated for event organisers, celebration of music and holiday festival)
B: Rhythm and Vines is significant to the people of Gisborne because... ( consider the profile of Gisborne and economic benefits for Gisborne)
5
C: What is the Spatial Nature of The Event?
Insert your annotated diagram / map of the event that includes (FACKTS) 1) location, size, distance here 2) interaction between people and the environment (+/-)
The above diagram shows
6
D: What are the specific features or characteristics of the event?
Describe the specific features of and characteristics of the event e.g. demographic of concert goers, length of concert, accommodation types, time of year and the acts who attend. Demographics:
Length of Concert:
Accommodation Types:
Time of year/Acts who attend:
7
2: Create a report that investigates the planning process involved in the Rhythm and
Vines event.
Before the event
A) Complete the table below to analyse the planning needed before the event
The Planning Process Time:
Who is involved: (List groups individuals)
8
Gather Information:
9
What compliance was necessary RMA/AEE Consent:
What are three legal aspects the R & V organisers need permission for to host the event?
Making the decision to implement the event:
Outline what information and groups/individuals are involved in the final decision making. You must also say how and why (values and viewpoints) they have reached the decision to go ahead with the event.
10
An evaluation of the planning process requires consideration of its strengths and weaknesses and how these have contributed to the success or otherwise of the Rhythm
and Vines event.
B) Evaluate the steps involved in the first stage (before the event) of the planning process (these steps are outlined in the previous table), providing reasons why these steps have contributed to the overall success or otherwise of the Rhythm and Vines event.
Your evaluation and analysis must include a range of specific examples that help support your ideas to gain Excellence.
11
During the Event:
Analyse how the organisers plan on overcoming any problems or issues that arise during the event? Problems could be found at the venue or in the wider Gisborne area
C) Problem experienced during Rhythm and Vines was:
D) Recommendations for organisers of future Rhythm and Vines Festivals to mitigate this problem:
12
E) Write a paragraph explaining how event organisers have complied with imposed regulations during the Rhythm and Vines. e.g. Police, District Council, Health and Safety.
F) Evaluate the success (or otherwise) of Rhythm and Vines planners in dealing with problems that arise during the event.
13
After the Event
The success or otherwise of the event can be evaluated in the post-event stage and should be completed within two weeks of the event date. This will include the clean-up and dismantling of the event. This stage involves analysis and evaluation of the event from different perspectives. This could include debriefs with those directly and indirectly involved in the organisation and running of the event. Participant’s perceptions maybe gathered using techniques such as surveys. It is also important to see how the media reported the event. Any event can have impacts – whether positive, negative, short-term or long-term. These impacts can also be broken down into social, economic and/or environmental impacts. The evaluation of these impacts assists in determining the sustainability of the significant event.
G) Explain the planning needed after the event with reasons why this was needed.
14
H) Evaluate the success (or otherwise) of the planning after the event
15
3: Explaining and Evaluating the Impacts of R & V
Impacts/ Definition Resource
Social Impacts - Refers to how people are impacted personally. It could include their happiness, well being, whether or not they feel positively or negatively about an issue. These can be direct impacts or indirect (e.g. trickle down)
16
Environmental Impacts - Looks at how the land, water, soil and air quality will or could be impacted by the hosting of a large event.
17
Economic Impacts - Focuses more on the dollar value an impact could have. Will people be better off or not if an event is carried out.
18
Social Impacts
The R & V festival now attracts 30,000 people each year. These festival goers stay for several days and increase Gisborne’s population by almost 50%. Initially, in the first few years there were issues that caused some disruption for local residents and this created some ill feeling. R & V organisers and the Gisborne City Council worked hard to fix these issues.
Identify and explain a range of social impacts in the table below
Social Costs Social Benefits
Direct
Impact
Indirect
Impact
19
Evaluate which of these two categories (costs or benefits) has had the biggest impact on the Gisborne area. Explain and Evaluate the Environmental Impacts of R & V – Complete the table below:
“The Resource Management Act and Gisborne’s District plan has meant that the R & V festival has had very limited impact on the natural environment.”
Environmental Impact –
these maybe short term
or long term, positive or
negative.
Evaluate how planning affected the extent of this impact (refer to
RMA and Gisborne’s District Plan role in R & V)

3.
20
Explain and Evaluate the Economic Impacts of the R & V Festival Looking at websites and other resources available explain and evaluate (+/-, short term / long term, large scale / small scale) how significant the economic impact of the R & V festival is for the Gisborne region? Make sure you use supporting evidence in your answer.
