Pirates pregame: Ray Searage will return. What about rest of Clint Hurdle's staff?
ROB BIERTEMPFEL | Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2017, 11:30 a.m.
MILWAUKEE — Yesterday, we discovered that pitching coach Ray Searage has agreed to an extension that will keep him around through the 2019 season. His contract had been set to expire after this season.
Searage's current deal was for two years. Some — not all, I am told — of manager Clint Hurdle's staff are on contracts of the same length.
Management generally is tight-lipped about the status of the coaches. Last weekend, after he and Hurdle got four-year extensions, GM Neal Huntington gave a vague "we're working on it" kind of response when asked about the coaches. If Searage's deal was done but not revealed, it could mean the front office is waiting until the fates of each coach is decided before making a general announcement. Nothing wrong with that.
So, what about the rest of Hurdle's lieutenants? The Pirates are on pace for a second straight losing season and had essentially tumbled out of the division race by mid-August. It would not be surprising if changes are made.
I want to stress that I haven't (as yet) gotten indications about the status of any coach other than Searage. So what follows is educated speculation.
Searage's renewal means there's a very good chance bullpen coach Euclides Rojas also will be back. They're a good tandem and Searage often has made a point to send credit Rojas' way when things are going well.
I also expect first base/outfield coach Kimera Bartee, third base/infield coach Joey Cora and bench coach Tom Prince to get extensions. All three joined the big league staff this season.
Cora eventually could be lured away if another team would offer a manager or bench coach job. Bartee has a good rapport with the players, but his duties with the outfielders were made difficult by Starling Marte's suspension and Gregory Polanco's rash of injuries. It's tough to coach up guys who are never on the field. Prince, who turned 53 last month, clearly is being groomed as the eventual replacement for Hurdle, who will be 64 when his contract expires.
Coach Dave Jauss would seem to have a job here as long as he wants one. The bench coach until this year, Jauss has been a conduit between Hurdle and the front office and has implemented many of the analytical advances the team has used.
Pirates catcher Francisco Cervelli jokes with hitting coach Jeff Branson during batting practice before a game against the Giants Friday, June 30, 2017, at PNC Park.
Hitting coach Jeff Branson and assistant hitting coach Jeff Livesey might be on the bubble. The Pirates rank 10th in the NL in on-base percentage; 13th in runs scored and OPS; and next-to-last in hits, home runs, total bases, batting average and slugging percentage.
Josh Bell struggled out of the gate, surged in July and August, and has scuffled some lately. Andrew McCutchen has not maintained the momentum he showed for two months earlier this season. Last night, when the Brewers threw a bullpen game and used seven different pitches, the Pirates racked up 11 strikeouts and managed only six hits.

Tyler Glasnow, Pirates lose despite Andrew McCutchen's 200th career homer
ROB BIERTEMPFEL | Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2017, 11:48 p.m.
MILWAUKEE — Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said he was looking forward to watching Tyler Glasnow pitch Wednesday against the Milwaukee Brewers.
Hurdle did not get to see too much, though, and not only because he was ejected in the first inning.
Back with the Pirates after a three-month stint in the minors, Glasnow's 13th big league start this season was just as unlucky as the first dozen. The right-hander put 10 men on base and did not make it out of the third inning in an 8-2 wipeout against the Brewers.
Glasnow (2-7) needed 77 pitches to navigate 22⁄3 innings. He allowed five runs on four hits, waked six and struck out three.
"When you walk a lot of guys, it usually doesn't end up well," Glasnow said. "I didn't have anything tonight. I was falling behind guys, not finishing pitches, not finishing counts. Ran into some trouble."
The Pirates' third-ranked prospect, Glasnow began the season in the starting rotation. He was demoted to Triple-A Indianapolis on June 10 after putting up a 7.45 ERA and issuing 29 walks in 541⁄3 innings.
After going 9-2 with a 1.93 ERA with Indy, Glasnow was given another chance with the Pirates.
"I don't have any expectations," Hurdle said before the game. "He went down (to Triple-A) and did the work, now he's got an opportunity to come back, do some work here and have some fun with it. I'm looking forward to watching him."
With two outs in the first inning, Andrew McCutchen crushed a first-pitch fastball from righty Chase Anderson (10-3), who worked on three days' rest after a tidy, 67-pitch outing Saturday.
The blast put McCutchen in company with Willie Stargell (475 homers), Ralph Kiner (301) and Roberto Clemente (240) as the only players to go deep 200 times with the Pirates.
"Close the book," Hurdle said. "That's good company to be in."
Glasnow's half of the first inning took about 20 minutes to complete. It included 35 pitches, four full counts, three walks, two strikeouts, one ejection, one mound visit and a broken-bat RBI single.
Three of the first four batters reached base. Neil Walker took a 3-2 fastball at the knees and seemed surprised when umpire Bill Welke called it a ball.
The call also stunned Hurdle, who was tossed for barking about it from the dugout.
"When he told me it was down, that's when I kind of tilted," Hurdle said. "Down never entered my mind. I thought it was strike three to start with. Obviously, what I shared with him never entered his mind."
Did Welke use the hook too quickly?
"I don't know if it was too quick or not," Hurdle said. "There are times when you cross the line, you pay a penalty. There are times when you make a bad call, and you need to move on."
Although Glasnow was struggling to throw strikes, the Brewers inexplicably tried a double steal. Eric Sogard was thrown out by a step at third base.
With two outs and two on, Hernan Perez dumped a first-pitch fastball into shallow center field. Walker scored on the single to tie it 1-1.
Glasnow tossed a 1-2-3 second, then came unhinged in the third.
Eric Thames reached for a curveball and whacked a two-run homer. With two outs, Glasnow gave up a walk and a single. Brett Phillips shattered his bat on a soft single that made it 5-1.
Including his time as a September call-up last year, Glasnow has pitched 801⁄3 innings in the majors. He's 2-9 with a 6.83 ERA and a 1.86 WHIP.
With the Pirates, Glasnow has shown the same nasty curveball that worked so well with Indy, and his fastball touched 99 mph. However, the control he harnessed in the minors has been hard to come by.
"He sprayed the fastball," Hurdle said. "He stayed aggressive. He used secondary pitches behind in counts. He threw the curveball and changeup. But the fastball command put him upside-down in counts."

Pirates notebook: Starling Marte hoping to play winter ball in Dominican Republic
ROB BIERTEMPFEL | Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2017, 8:45 p.m.
MILWAUKEE — Starling Marte wants to play in the Dominican Winter League to make up for some of the at-bats he missed while serving an 80-game suspension this season.
“I think I need it,” Marte said Wednesday. “I need to see a lot more pitching and take more at-bats.”
Marte said he hasn't told the Pirates that he wants to play in the DWL. The topic will come up when he is called in for his end-of-season interview with manager Clint Hurdle and general manager Neal Huntington.
“They'll probably tell me it's OK if I decide I want to play,” Marte said.
MLB teams have no say in whether or not a player goes to winter ball. The Pirates generally encourage their prospects, especially those who missed time due to injuries, to play.
“I want to hear from (Marte) on where he feels he is,” Hurdle said.
“Only he knows the feeling of going without half a season, then plugging back in and the challenges that have come with that.”
Marte, 28, was suspended April 18 after flunking a steroids test and returned July 18.
Through 65 games, Marte has made just 288 plate appearances and his .247 batting average and .655 OPS are career lows.
“There are a number of older guys who have gone (to winter ball) over the years,” Hurdle said. “Marlon Byrd went down a few years ago and it absolutely re-plugged in his career.”
In 2012, Byrd was released by the Boston Red Sox, then suspended for 50 games after testing positive for a PED. He rebuilt his swing in the Mexican Pacific League, then put up a solid season with the New York Mets before being traded to the Pirates in 2013.
Marte, who makes his home in Santo Domingo, D.R., wants to play for Leones del Escogido.
“I've been looking forward the past three years to playing there again,” Marte said. “It's fun to play winter ball because there's a lot of different (kinds of) pitching. Pitchers from every level — High-A, Double-A, Triple-A, veteran guys — are there. It's fun to play with those guys.”
Marte has played five seasons in the DWL. He was with Aguilas Cibaenas in 2009-10 and 2010-11.
He played for Escogido in 2011-12 and 2012-13.
Marte made his big league debut in 2012. He has not played winter ball since 2013-14, when he appeared in three games with Escogido.
EYES ON KANG
Jung Ho Kang, who has been stuck in South Korea all season without a visa to enter the United States, is expected to play for Aguilas this winter. Hurdle plans to go to the Dominican to watch Kang play.
“I'd like to see him in person,” Hurdle said. “I'd like to see him, on top of seeing him play. He's a guy you can have a conversation with, so I'm looking forward to seeing how that plays out.”
One of the Pirates' athletic trainers also will check in with Kang in the Dominican.
PLANET OF THE ACHES
Francisco Cervelli (irritated left quad) has run on the field in cleats the past four days and is taking normal batting practice. He will attempt squatting activities Friday.
“He's pretty driven,” head athletic trainer Todd Tomczyk said. “This guy wants to come back (this season). We're running out of games, so we're working through the balance with that, as well.”
Austin Meadows (oblique) has not resumed full batting practice. His status for winter ball remains in limbo.
Cole Tucker (broken hand) will miss at least the beginning of the Arizona Fall League season.
“We're hopeful he will have a normal offseason,” Tomczyk said, adding Tucker also is being examined by “other doctors” to aid his recovery.

Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy and his famous mullet will visit Heinz Field for the Cowboys game Saturday against Pitt.
ADAM BITTNER
Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy has the most celebrated hair in college football, and for good reason. His flowing mullet is symbolic of a man who doesn’t take himself too seriously in a sport awash with coaches who take themselves way too seriously.
It’s appropriate, then, that his flowing mane will make a visit to Pittsburgh, a city with a proud tradition of sports mullets, when the Cowboys face Pitt Saturday afteroon at Heinz Field. In celebration, here’s a look at how Gundy’s stacks up with some of the best mullets ever worn by athletes in these parts.
Jaromir Jagr — Penguins
Jaromir Jagr Mullet
I mean, c’mon. It doesn’t get any better than that. Jagr rocked different versions of the look through his lengthy career here, but he perfected it in the early 1990s around the same time he helped guide his team to back-to-back Stanley Cup championships. The curls. The length. It was Big Hair defined. It should be on display in the Smithsonian.

Doug Drabek — Pirates
Doug Drabek mullet
The first of several early ‘90s Pirates pitchers on this list, Drabek had the most consistently excellent flow and completed the look best with that full, bushy mustache. He strikes quite a contrast with Jagr, choosing to more closely follow the mullet doctrine of business in the front, party in the back. But it’s glorious nevertheless.
Bob Walk — Pirates
Bob Walk mullet
The former pitcher’s hair has been the subject of some debate in the Post-Gazette newsroom. Is it a mullet? Or is it merely long? By the Merriam-Webster definition — “a hairstyle in which the hair is short on the sides and top and long at the back” — Walk’s hair might fit the mullet bill better than Jagr. So we’re including the Pirates commentator on the list.
Mario Lemieux — Penguins

“Le Magnifique” had a mullet like a comet. It lasted briefly in comparison to his teammate Jagr’s, but man, did it cascade forth from his helmet spectacularly while it was there.

The only man not named Bradshaw or Roethlisberger to lead the Steelers to a Super Bowl shed his mullet by the time of his most memorable contributions in the mid ‘90s. But it was alive and well early in the decade.
Jaff Decker — Pirates

He didn’t have much of a Pirates career, playing in just 28 games between 2014 and ’15. But you’ve got to give the man props for rocking the hairstyle decades after it went out of style.

Joe Starkey: Pirates don't seem to hear what fans are trying to tell them
JOE STARKEY
I don’t think of Pirates owner Bob Nutting as a malevolent miser. He’s not Mr. Potter from “It’s a Wonderful Life.”
I think of him more as an oddly disengaged executive bean counter who can’t see beyond his pile of beans. And I don’t think that’s going to change.
Were he to look up, Nutting might notice his baseball team falling off the grid. I mean, he obviously knows that attendance (down more than 20 percent since 2015) and TV ratings are plunging like punctured parachutes. I’m just not sure he’s getting the message. Or realizes that a fix might begin with him.
I can’t see Nutting waking up one day and dictating this kind of letter to fans:
“You people were incredible the way you flocked back to PNC Park after 20 years of losing. The least I can do is pick up the tab for the drop in attendance these past two years. I get it. Nobody wants to hear us constantly linking attendance to payroll, as if it’s on you. It’s on ME. And you know what? I’m going to do more than cover the drop in revenues. I’m going to pump the payroll to try to create a product you can be proud of and maybe want to watch. Goodness knows, I can afford to splurge once in a while — especially with team values skyrocketing and all the revenue coming in from Major League Baseball these days. We’re not going to spend like the Los Angeles Dodgers, but after multiple years of stagnant payroll, we can certainly spend like the Cleveland Indians. It starts this offseason. It starts with me.”
Instead, he appears eager to stem the ticket revenue decline by any means necessary. Like dumping a perfectly good player (Juan Nicasio) to the last-place Phillies (who later traded him to the Cardinals) for no discernible reason other than to save $600,000.
If anybody in his organization told Nutting how catastrophically such a move — minor as it was — would play with a livid fan base, he didn’t listen. He couldn’t see beyond the beans.
Fans be darned, the Pirates did it anyway, then saw Nicasio, wearing the colors of the hated St. Louis Cardinals, rub it in everybody’s face by finishing off consecutive wins against his former team (every time Nicasio earns a save, an angel gets its wings).
Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports boiled the situation to its essence with the following tweet:

I know Pittsburgh is out of the race, but to let a quality RP like Juan Nicasio leave for nothing to save $600K screams of pure cheapness.

A real doozy.

The worst part of it, by far, was the offhand way in which they mentioned the savings. As if it wasn’t that important. As if it wasn’t the PRIMARY MOTIVE behind dumping Nicasio.
Wedged somewhere among the bouquets tossed at Nicasio (you’d think they were saying goodbye to Ted Williams) and claims of not wanting to see him go to a “direct competitor” (good thing he didn’t wind up in St. Louis), general manager Neal Huntington, or whoever crafted the statement, threw in this little gem: “We acknowledge the minimal amount of money saved by making this move.”
Minimal? Is there any amount of money this organization considers “minimal?” Even as we speak, it’s possible Pirates employees are digging behind couch cushions for change to throw in the jar labeled “Help Offset the Attendance Plunge.”
Please.
Yet while Nutting is always looking to cut corners on players (won’t it be fun watching Miguel Sano — a guy the Pirates failed to pony up for — playing for Minnesota in the home opener next season?) — he has doubled down on staff. He obviously believes Huntington, manager Clint Hurdle and pitching coach Ray Searage have a few more miracles left in them. All three got contract extensions this month, the latest being Searage.
I like the moves, but only to a point, because here’s the thing: Repeat miracles are always a bad bet. The Pirates need more talent.
Their days of outsmarting people have passed.
Huntington is mired in a Chris Stewart-like slump. Hurdle, as manager, can only do so much. Searage is a pitching coach. He’s a good one, but he’s not the enchanter people made him out to be. That much has become clear.
If you were among those crediting Searage with saves on A.J. Burnett, Edinson Volquez, Francisco Liriano, J.A. Happ and others, do you give him losses for Tony Watson, Daniel Hudson, second-half Ivan Nova, Jeff Locke, Jon Niese, starter Nicasio, early Tyler Glasnow and so many others? Is Gerrit Cole getting better?
The truth is that Searage can only do so much. The Pirates need more talent.
I’ll be the first to say that player failure tops the list of reasons for this season’s pratfall, but that doesn’t absolve management. It certainly doesn’t absolve ownership.
I asked to speak with Nutting in the wake of the Nicasio imbroglio but was told he won’t be talking until season’s end.
I understand. It must be difficult to pry him away from his pile of beans.

New delivery, old results for Tyler Glasnow in loss to Brewers
BILL BRINK
MILWAUKEE — Tyler Glasnow looked different on the mound at Miller Park Wednesday night. Gone was the rock step he used in spring training; instead, he began with his left foot slightly behind his right. His delivery was much quicker.
The pitches looked different, too. His fastball hit 99 mph and consistently topped 95, which rarely happened earlier this season. His changeup looked like a changeup, rather than a slower, straighter fastball. He got Neil Walker to swing over a good one.
Glasnow looked different on the mound. The results looked similar.
The 24-year-old right-hander did not complete the third inning during an 8-2 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers. He threw 77 pitches, only 40 of them strikes, to record eight outs. Glasnow issued five unintentional walks, allowed five runs and four hits, and struck out three. Of the 16 batters he threw a pitch to, he went to a three-ball count on nine of them.
“The overall fastball command continued to put him upside down in counts,” manager Clint Hurdle said. “… He had to work uphill the entire time it was out there.”
Glasnow dominated the minor leagues for years. This spring, the Pirates decided that the next phase of Glasnow’s development needed to take place in the majors, and gave him the final spot in the rotation. He started 12 games. He finished six innings in three of them. In 541/3 innings he walked 29 batters, or 4.8 per nine innings pitched, and had a 7.45 ERA when the Pirates optioned him to Class AAA Indianapolis June 10.
Unable to implement pitching coach Ray Searage’s suggestion to speed up his delivery and pitch less deliberately in the majors, the advice clicked after the demotion. He struck out 140 batters in 931/3 innings with a 1.93 ERA and earned another shot in the major league rotation as the Pirates give some of their starters a breather.
“I went down and it was kind of a wakeup call,” Glasnow said Sunday. “Just kind of a whole changeup of mechanics and switched everything up. Fastball velo went up and I had two off-speed pitches, and it’s a lot easier to pitch with three pitches than half of one.”
On Wednesday, Glasnow (2-7) threw only 20 of his 35 first-inning pitches for strikes. He took the first four batters of the game to a three-ball count and walked three of them.
“Walk a lot of guys,” Glasnow said, “it usually doesn’t end up well.”
He should have had Walker struck out looking at a fastball, but home-plate umpire Bill Welke called it ball four. Hurdle protested from the dugout and Welke immediately tossed him.
“When he told me it was down, I kind of tilted,” Hurdle said. “’Down’ never entered my mind. I thought it was strike three to start with. Obviously what I shared with him never entered his mind.”
The Brewers helped Glasnow out when Eric Sogard tried to steal third. Elias Diaz threw him out. After a walk to Travis Shaw, Searage visited the mound. The next pitch Glasnow threw resulted in a broken-bat RBI single, and Manny Pina struck out on a curveball well short of the plate to end the inning.
The second inning went better. Glasnow retired the side in order on 11 pitches. His issues resurfaced in the third.
Another walk to Sogard began the inning. Eric Thames homered to center field on a curveball at the bottom of the zone. Glasnow then retired Walker and Shaw, but walked Hernan Perez. Manny Pina snuck a grounder through the left side of the infield.
At this point Diaz, looking for anything to help Glasnow get ahead of batters, called for a first-pitch curveball and a second-pitch changeup to Brett Phillips. Both were balls.
“When you’re not ahead in counts, you need to try other things,” Hurdle said. “Many times a curveball or changeup can bring a pitcher’s fastball release point back into play.”
Phillips eventually blooped a broken-bat single to right field and brought home two runs.
“First start coming back, I’m going to just forget about this one,” Glasnow said. “I'm going to go out and work throughout the week.”
Andrew McCutchen hit his 25th homer of the season and the 200th of his career in the first inning. Only three players have more in Pirates history.“Stargell, Kiner and Clemente?” Hurdle said. “Close the book on it right there.”
