Just how long is a minute? Well ifyou are sitting in your doctor’swaiting room, waiting to be called, aminute can certainly seem like aneternity. Conversely, if youhappened to be at the ValentinesSeptember social event, a minutemay have felt like a blink of an eye.“Minute To Win It” was the themeof the evening, it was based on theTV program with the same name.Laura challenged the group with 10different tasks, each to becompleted in 1 minute or less. Afternumerous hardy laughs, Deb Isleyand Mikey Valentine emerged asvictors.

A big thank you goes out to Laurafor going above and beyond inorchestrating this fun event. Also, thanks to her support team of Mike,Jess, Mikey, Chris, Katelyn, and Bob& Charlotte Cryan.

You may or may not be aware thatwe are revising our Code ofRegulations. Not an easy task. BobCryan has been the catalyst and JeffFort the authoritative presence of asmall committee of which I am apart. Our objective is to becomemore in line with PCA National’sCode of regulations guidelines, andat the same time, produce adocument that is more detailed anddescriptive. We submitted a reviseddraft to National’s PolicyCommittee for their critique, subsequently adopting many of

their suggestions. Our committeehas several hours invested in thisundertaking, and we hope to ratifythe next draft, at the November 13Board meeting.

Next up on the social calendar is ourannual planning party, SaturdayNovember 11, hosted by Diane andJim Schoen. One of the mostimportant events of the year, it’swhen brilliant minds convene, tomap out the upcoming year’s socialcalendar. Please contact KimHarris,[email protected] if youhave an idea for an event, remember an event does not needto be held at a member’s home.

The planning meeting will beclosely followed by our HolidayParty on Friday, December 1st, atBrandywine Golf Club. The HolidayParty typically garners our largestattendance, it’s a great opportunityto welcome newer club members.Formal invitations will be mailedout in mid October.

The 2017 calendar year is quicklywinding down. I hope to see you atan upcoming event.

Take care.

Barney.

Minute To Win Itby Kim Harris

What a great idea for a party –thank you Laura Valentine! Themeof red, white and blue includingdessert specialties surrounded theevent. Even a big screen TV was puton with the Ohio State game. It wasan evening of all American fun forour Maumee Valley Region, now inits 45th year.

Mike and Laura put on a great eventfor our club. We had food, drinks, treats, prizes and fun interactionswith fellow Porsche enthusiasts. Before the games began, there wastime to admire and discuss eachother’s cars. They always look greatlined up and down a street together.

How much can you accomplish inone minute? Do you think you couldstack 10 nuts, blow 1 bubblethrough ring, knock over 3 waffleballs with nerf pistol or bounce bagof ping pong balls into glasscontainers? Well partygoers provedthey could handle these challenges

and more at the Valentine’s onSeptember 16.

Well, ok, some of us got a littlestuck on a challenge or two. Icouldn’t channel my inner 5 yearold and blow a decent bubble letalone push it through the ring. ThenBeth was barked at by Ferdinand tonot knock over that final waterbottle. And a few folks had jams intheir nerf pistols before three ballswere shot off their posts. Thesewere just a few minor setbacks.

Score one point for participatingand three for accomplishing thechallenge. Some folks breezedthrough the clever tasks put beforeus. Ultimate point winners were DebIsley and Mikey Valentine who willbe enjoying their Cold Stone giftcards as our final warm weather isstill here. The rest of us went homewith heads high wearing ourparticipation medals as a reminderthat we tried our best!

Roll Bar Recommendation – 1995 993 Cabriolet

Question: I missed a recent DE event because my '95 Cab is required tohave a roll bar. Has anyone installed one? Any recommendations? I want toget one installed asap. Thanks.

Answer: Submitted by Anthony Callas. As you probably already know, thereare quite a few options when it comes to Roll-over bars and or full Cages.

Let’s start with the terminology,

Roll Cage: A full cage that usually welds into the inside of the cockpit orpassenger compartment. This normally isn’t a good idea in a street driventrack car because of the lack of accessibility to the cockpit once it is fullyinstalled. We usually recommend a bolt in Roll-over bar or possibly bolt-incage at this point because it isn’t so permanent.

Roll-Over Bar: A roll-over bar sits behind the front seats and is just a simplehoop with legs crossing and facing rear wards for additional triangular typestrength. This works well and it is our first recommendation in a streetdriven track car. The neat thing about a roll-over bar is that it can easily beinstalled and removed without damaging much of the interior of theautomobile. Not to mention the fact that it’s a great place to mount yourshoulder harnesses for your 5/6 point harness system.

If you must go with a full cage and if it’s a street driven track car, Irecommend that you go with a bolt-in style set-up, for example from OGRacing, DAS Sport or Safety Devices just to name a few. These threementioned manufacturers are of high quality and fit well.

If you’re searching for a simple roll-over bar then the world is yours, thereare many to choose from. Here are some examples just to name a few, thepreviously mentioned including Porsche Tequipment, AutoPower and RSS.

I would also check with Cantrell Motorsports, OG racing and RSS becausethese companies have good reputations.

Using Jack Stands with Cayman – 2008 Cayman S

Question: I have watched numerous videos, read my Porsche User Manual, and searched the internet on this topic. My 2008 Cayman seems to have 4and only 4 places under the car that is acceptable to lift the car off theground. These are small, reinforced circles (buttons) just behind the frontwheels and just forward of the rear wheels. This presents a MAJOR

challenge if you want to pull all 4 wheels at one time. Brake jobs, Brakefluid flush, etc. are just two of many reasons someone may want to do this.

I have: two floor jacks: 1-low pro jack and 1 trolley jack, 4 adjustable jackstands, pair of ramps

I want to be able to lift the car and place all 4 jacks stands on the designatedjack point (buttons). It is super tempting to use the floor jack in the centerof the front and rear of car. Is there a safe place to do so? If not, what is thebest practice for this operation?

Answer: Submitted by Pedro Bonilla. In order to place 4 jack stands and liftall 4 wheels off the ground in your Cayman do the following:

1.- With the jack on the left rear jack point and lift until you can place a jackstand under the front left jacking point. Slowly lower the jack.2.- Move the jack to the right rear jacking point and lift until you can placea jack stand under the front right jacking point. Slowly lower the jack.3.- Move the jack to the rear of the car, at the rearmost part of thealuminum skid plate, in between the tow bolts and lift. This will raise bothrear wheels at once.4.- Place a jack stand under each of the rear jack points. Slowly lower thejack.

Your car in now ready to have all 4 wheels removed.

SRS Light Stays On – 2000 Boxster

Question:When I slid the driver's seat back, the SRS warning lightilluminated. The driver seat was replaced with a track seat a few years agobut this is the first time the SRS light came on. The DTC codes retrievedinclude: 03 Airbag warning supply and 46 Belt buckle, driver. I have visuallychecked wiring harness under the seat for damage or lose connection but allseems as intact as before. Disconnecting the battery did not extinguish theSRS light. Does the SRS system disable itself when the light is illuminated? What is a reasonable course of action to extinguish the light and return thesystem to operation?

Answer: Submitted by Pedro Bonilla. The SRS light can only be turned offby a Porsche Computer System such as the PST-II, PIWIS or Durametric. Itdoes not turn itself off when the issue that triggered is repaired as the CELdoes. Disconnecting the battery does not work either. The seatbelt bucklescan generate the SRS light in many cars. When the contacts becomesulphated or dirty the electrical resistance changes and the computer readsthat as a fault. Try using a good electrical contact cleaner and spray liberallyinside the buckle receptacle while rapidly depending the release button. This can clean the contacts. Then clear the SRS light as explained above.

Happy Porsche'ing, Pedro

Greetings PCAZone 4 Members,

Over the past fewmonths, I havetravelledextensivelythroughout thezone attending amultitude ofoutstanding

events affording me the opportunityto interact with a number of PCAmembers.

I was able to participate inMORPCA’s 3rd annual HPDE at theIndianapolis Motor Speedway alongwith nearly 300 drivers from all overthe country, with a large group fromthroughout zone 4. The outstanding3-day event is still the only one ofits kind permitted at IMS. Theweekend began with a gatheringheld in a pavilion near the iconicpagoda, as well as a reception thefollowing evening in the Hall ofFame Museum. This year there wasalso a party for all of the volunteersand instructors held at the DallaraIndy Car Factory in nearbySpeedway, IN.

I recently attended Northern OhioRegion’s Annual Rib Burn-off andsocial. This event is consistentlyone of their largest social events ofthe summer and included a people’schoice car show. In addition, therewas even live music provided.

I also recently attended EasternBuckeye Region’s Annual Summer

Party, an event I’ve been told Ineeded to attend since becomingZone Rep. The Summer Party is oneof the region’s most popular events. This year’s theme was a Toga Party, and it was great to see so many ofthe members participate. One of thehighlights of the evening was animpressive fireworks display.

As we look ahead to events beingoffered this month, there are somegreat opportunities to enjoy somemore time behind the wheel beforethe driving season concludes and itis time to store your car for thewinter. A number of regions havebeautiful color tours scheduled. Inaddition, there are still a few moreDEs available for those who wantanother opportunity to spend sometime on the track, as well asautocrosses, car shows, and thereare always terrific social events toattend. Make sure to get out andtake advantage of theseopportunities.

Please remember to check your inboxes, region’s newsletter andwebsite, as well as the Zone 4website http://zone4.pca.org for themost up to date information aboutevents available to you. Also, consider attending other regions’events, such as:

• October 3 is Rally Sport Region’sClub Meeting at Karl’s Cabin inPlymouth

A Porsche Adventureby Jeff Fort

When I attended the DE at Gratten(great job MVR members) my 1970914-6 started missing, so much sothat I didn’t run on Sunday. Thenext Monday I took the car to AutoAssets in Powell as they had workedon the car before and Chip Vance, the owner, races a six. I expected acarburetor or ignition problem. Badnews – cylinder #1 had only 75%compression.

As luck would have it, I also ran intoJay Kjoller at Gratten (not on thetrack). In the 1990’s, Jay rebuilt thetop end of my 73 911S. I had losttrack of Jay and learned that he hadmoved to Colorado but now livedbetween Toledo and Findlay. ThankGod, he agreed to work on myengine and, even better, to let mehelp.

What an adventure for me. I tookthe engine out to deliver it to Jay. Ihad never done anything like thisbefore and it scared me. Butactually, it came out easily. Shiftlinkage, half shafts, oil hoses in andout, electrical connections and gaslines. Still scary though, but at leastI wasn’t injured.

Jay confirmed the leak on #1 so ithad to come apart. Jay and I had itdown to the crankshaft in a day(after he had earlier got the engineon a stand and removed thetransmission). We expected to see acracked exhaust valve (the problemhe fixed on the 73 S) or somethingelse like that. The only thingdiscovered was some carbon build

up on the head where the valveseats.

But as long as we had gone thisfar . . . a more aggressive cam shaft, new crankshaft bearings, new valveguides, rebuilt distributor, machinethe heads and piston rods, etc. Whata joy to watch Jay – he knows theseengines like the back of his hand –and to marvel at the engineering.

When I bought the car over 15 yearsago, I was told it was a 2.5L “shortstroker.” This was a commonrebuild in the 70’s using the original2.0L crankshaft and 2.7L pistonsand cylinders. Jay confirmed that infact it is a 2.7L engine and thatmore is better. It has a desirableearly aluminum case (Porsche laterwent to magnesium), Mahle pistons,Nikasil cylinders and a later oilpump. Someone had even carved offthe bottoms of the pistons to makethem lighter. All in all a very nice, ifolder, rebuilt engine. Someoneknew what they were doing.

After the turn of the year I willprevail on Jay again and begin therebuilt. I can’t wait.
