Morning Plenary 9:00–10:15 a.m.

Your co-op, your community, your home

Moderator: Karen Brodeur

All over the world, co-ops are doing a whole lot of good! Co-ops meet the needs of people whose needs aren’t being met otherwise, and they exist in every area of the economy. Co-ops are rooted in communities by their very nature. They are accountable to their communities and the people who use their services, because these same people own the co-op.

Today, we’ll look at a how you can use a new resource to help engage your members in a better understanding of their role in your co-op. And we’ll explore how our housing co-ops in New Brunswick contribute to the international co-op movement by enhancing our own governance, engaging in local and global efforts and protecting our assets for the future.

Morning WorkshopsChoose one 90-minute workshop 10:30 a.m.–12:00 p.m.

1. Good governance: a role for everyone

Fazeela Jiwa (Your co-op: enhancing good governance)

All members of your co-op play an important role in its success. This means that co-op members need key information to make good decisions and take part in the democratic and social life of the co-op. We’ll talk about the specific governance responsibilities that members and directors each have, and how to make sure that members, the board and the manager all work together. That way everyone can play a full role in supporting good governance in your co-op.

2. Co-ops around the world

Nicholas Gazzard (Your community: local to global)

The 2012 International Year of Co-operatives was a high point in the history of the global co-operative movement. It reinforced our co-operative identity, raised the co-operative profile and provided an opportunity for co-ops in communities across Canada and around the world to showcase the co-operative difference. But when the International Year was over, the obvious question was, what next?

In order to build on the Year’s successes and project co-ops into the future, the International Co-op Alliance (ICA) created a Blueprint for a Co-operative Decade, a strategy document aimed at making co-ops the fastest-growing business model by the year 2020.

Join us to hear from Nicholas Gazzard, President of Co-operative Housing International (CHI) and CHF Canada’s executive director, on how Canada’s housing co-ops have a stronger voice in the international co-operative movement.

3. Long-term planning using asset management tools

Dave Howard and John Wilkinson (Your home: protecting your assets)

Keeping your co-op in good repair is really important. It can be overwhelming for your board to know where to start and difficult to know where to focus to get the best results with limited co-op dollars. Good planning using asset management tools helps your co-op with the big picture. It shows you all the things that are in need of repair and which you need to fix first. We’ll discuss how using these tools, like a building condition audit (BCA) and a capital plan, will help your board start on its way to long-term planning. Join us to learn how co-op members can ensure our homes are in great shape for the future.

Lunch12:15–1:45 p.m.

Enjoy a buffet lunch while networking with other co-operators from across Nova Scotia.

Afternoon Workshops Choose one 90-minute workshop 2:00–3:30 p.m.

4. It’s your duty!

Fazeela Jiwa and Cathy Volans (Your co-op: enhancing good governance)

Co-op members expect their directors to provide principled leadership and live up to the highest standards of conduct. But what’s the right standard? And what exactly are a director’s legal and ethical duties? We’ll discuss how to build members’ confidence in their elected directors and what tools are available to help.

5. The amazing story of co-op housing

John Wilkinson (Your community: local to global)

Co-ops have a rich and inspirational history—from the founding pioneers to your own co-op communities in Nova Scotia. Our members are living that story, but often have difficulty explaining what a housing co-op is to others, or how the co-op principles relate to day-to-day life. We’ll work together to learn about co-ops and learn how to share key points with our members, so they too can take pride in their own role in the co-op story.

6. Co-ops: All shapes and sizes

Karen Brodeur and Nicholas Gazzard (Your home: protecting your assets)

The co-operative model is a very versatile and flexible framework for providing affordable housing. But in this critical time of housing need, the co-op model isn’t being used to its full potential. We’ll explore how co-op housing can break away from the old way of doing business and learn about some local initiatives where increased scale and different structure are creating a path forward for more co-op housing.
