LEVERAGING OUR MEMBERS’ VOICES TO IMPACT PUBLIC POLICY

BUILDING AN ENVIRONMENT OF ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AND GROWTH

Our Partnership public policy staff regularly work on behalf of our members in Washington, D.C., Austin and throughout greater Houston to present a collective membership voice on issues critical to the development and success of the region.

For example, in 2016, the Partnership:

• Launched Public Policy 2020, a strategic planning initiative for the Houston region.

• Deliberated with members over 140 policy issues across six major areas: education, energy, the environment, health care, transportation and quality of life.

• Advocated for access to high quality Pre-K programs across the Houston region through the Early Matters coalition.

• Identified five priorities for the 2017 State Legislative Session:

• Achieving comprehensive pension reform.• Protecting Pre-K investments.• Advancing economic development policies,

including incentives.• Improving commercial transportation corridors.• Ensuring that Texas has an effective workforce

development platform.

• Worked with state-level elected officials during the interim session to drive mid-term priorities.

• Prepared for the 115th U.S. Congress and the new Administration.

• Led several high-level international delegations with Houston’s new mayor, Sylvester Turner.

Partnership economic development experts work to bring growth to the region by promoting job creation and attracting capital investment. In 2016, the economic development team targeted several domestic and international markets as opportunities for Houston.

For example, in 2016, the Partnership:

• Advanced Houston’s position as a global business hub through recruitment or expansion of 22 companies, attracting more than 7,000 jobs and $2.3 billion in capital investment to the region.

• Adopted a Houston Metro Export Plan to benefit mid-size businesses by helping them better reach global markets and customers.

• Attracted investment from sector leaders including Amazon, UPS and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries.
