John Stark, who fought in the Battles of Bunker Hill, Trenton, Princeton and Bennington during the American Revolutionary War. Due to poor health (at age 81), he was unable to travel in 1809 to be with a group of Bennington veterans who had gathered to commemorate the battle. He instead sent a letter to his friends, which closed with the words “Live free or die: Death is not the worst of evils,” the first part of which became the New Hampshire State Motto in 1945. Stark County was formed in 1839 out of Knox and Putnam counties. Eleven years prior, Isaac B. Essex had made a claim, and in the fall of 1828 cut logs and split the clap-boards for his house. Along with several friends, he hauled them to the proposed building site in 1829. They all camped in the woods the first night, but towards sundown of the second day, the cabin was raised, the roof on, and as Mr. Essex graphically said “we cut a log out and moved in.” This was the first home of non-Native American settlers within Stark County. ABOUT STARK COUNTYStark County is named after New Hampshire native Gen. John Stark, who fought in the Battles of Bunker Hill, Trenton, Princeton and Bennington during the American Revolutionary War. Due to poor health (at age 81), he was unable to travel in 1809 to be with a group of Bennington veterans who had gathered to commemorate the battle. WYOMINGThomas Park is where it’s @!Crafts, food, entertainment and activities, they’re all here, and especially for YOU! The Stark County Fall Festival Drive is two full days of excitement that will leave you wanting to come back again and again (you don’t have to wait until next year, either!). Our businesses have lots to offer, and if you’ve not been to Stark County lately, the updates are outstanding! For example, the recent-ly-renovated Paramount Theatre opened recently with sellout crowds for comedian Theo Von. Theo was quoted in the Peoria Journal Star, stating that, “On a personal level, I think that preserving cultural landmarks, especially in small towns, is extremely important. I also believe having a local home for the arts will inspire the arts in young people.” We’re looking forward to many more performances at the Paramount! Life is always full of surprises, and this year, the Fall Festival honors all of those who work so hard to make it happen. Past & present, thank you for coming; enjoy what we have to offer and leave knowing we have done our best for you! We’re still aiming to keep it simple and ‘old school.’ God bless!

The Rock Island Trail State Park is a 26-mile (42 km) long public rail trail in the west-central region of the U.S. state of Illinois. It was designated a National Recreation Trail in 2003. The trail passes through portions of Peoria and Stark counties. The south-ern end of the trail is currently located at Pioneer Parkway in north Peoria, Illinois, and the northern end is in Toulon, Illinois, the county seat of Stark County. The right-of-way served as a railroad line from 1871 to 1963, was unused in 1963-1989, and has been a public trail since 1989.

WEST JERSEY

LAFAYETTE

VENDORS & ACTIVITIES   West Jersey Methodist Church always has some of the best

baked goods and pies you’ll find in Stark County! You don’t even have to wait ‘til you get home to eat, either – the coffee will be hot and the conversation friendly, so stop on by!

And back by popular demand (not to mention overflowing garages and attics), don’t miss the annual “Trash & Treasures” jumble sale (one man’s trash is another man’s treasure, right?). You never know what bargains you’ll find, and you definitely won’t know unless you come on over to West Jersey!

The first settler in the township of West Jersey was Jacob B. Smith, who came from Fulton County, IL in February, 1836, building a log cabin and be-ginning the work of building up a home in the wilderness. By 1838, the area had been populated to the point where Joseph Palmer hosted a “celebration” at his house near Walnut Creek on July 4 at which forty-six persons took dinner. Caleb North delivered an oration, and the affair wound up with a dance, William Mason furnishing the music. George A. Clifford says Mr. Mason lived near the present City of Toulon and that he received nine dollars on this occasion, “the first money he ever took in for music.”

Between 1836 and 1850, several families from New Jersey settled in this part of the county. Among them were the Bodines, Boyds, Hazens, Wileys, Youngs and others. When the township system was introduced in 1853 these people requested that their township be called West Jersey, which request was granted and in that way the township was named.

The first schoolhouse was built in 1837 or 1838. By 1915, there were eight public schoolhouses in the township. As of 1916, West Jersey was one of the two townships of Stark County that had no railroad service. With the exception of a small tract of sandy land called the “Barrens,” the entire township was well adapted to agriculture and produced fine crops of corn, wheat, oats and other farm products suited to this section of the state. Fruit growing received considerable attention and West Jersey boasted some of the best orchards in the county.

West Jersey historical info from Stark County, Illinois and Its People: A Record of Settlement Organization, Progress and Achievement (1916)

La Fayette (pronounced Lay-fee-yet locally), is named after Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette (pronounced l-AH-f-ai-EH-t). Lafayette was a French aristocrat and military officer who fought in the American Revolution-ary War. A close friend of George Washington, Alexander Hamilton, and Thomas Jefferson, Lafayette was a key figure in the French Revolution of 1789 and the July Revolution of 1830. During World War I, a group of American volunteer pilots flew with the French Air Service from 1916 through 1918, when America formally entered the war. They named their squadron the LaFayette Escadrille in honor of LaFayette.

VENDORS & ACTIVITIES   Stahl’s Pumpkins & More: Located 1 mile west and 1 mile south of LaFayette. Pumpkins of

Moatzy, one of many names. Being known for her ability to cook & her love of children got her a start here in Wyoming. Working with the Wyoming Vets and yes, as our long-time Secretary for the Stark County Fall Festival, years of volunteering and being the other “Peg” made her who she was!Around Peg, there was never a dull moment and you never knew what you were going to get next, similar to that box of chocolates. A friend, helping hand, a fixer to a problem, a blast to be with and a joy to have in your life. She knew what you needed before you asked or saw what needed to be done, and always had your back.Phone calls often started with, “It’s me,” and you knew there was a problem to solve, and no matter the task, even if it was just a visit, it was always interesting. A lady when she needed to be and loads of fun to be with, and oh, she had moves! The ideas she came up with had already tried on her family, and if they lived, it was good enough for the Fall Festival!

Alas, ‘Fear Factor’ will be no more! From the Popcorn Ball Lady on Halloween, to the Fairy God Mother at Relay for Life, Peg was many things. She kept us in line, either by the book she kept at her side or by what she had locked away in her mind – we owe her so much for her time!Peg made the Fall Festival a success a million times over, as a hog calling ballerina or by winning the talent show with the duet of a lifetime with Roger – we laughed so hard, we cried! What were they thinking? Clearly, “I Got You, Babe!” Never knew they could sing, winners is what they were!Working with Moats, there was never “nothing impossible,” her most famous saying for all of life’s events was ; “It is what it is.”So as you venture out this year on our drive, do it with Peg Moats in mind. Take time to bless others with words that are kind, hug an old friend with Peg in mind. She truly was our ‘Pegger,’ a “one of a kind,” and we miss her greatly…

In Memoriam: Peggy Moats, 1962–2017
