ゼミ紹介(特徴、雰囲気等) / What Seminar is like, including the topic, atmosphere, etc. アメリカの人種社会について学ぶゼミです。アフリカ系を中心とする公民権運動や、アジア系移民の歴史を主に学ぶ一方、4年生中心となる春学期には、アメリカ大統領選の歴史を人種問題と絡めて概観します。ゼミの雰囲気は和やか。学生の自主性を最大限尊重しながら授業を進めています。詳しくは <http://www.quon.asia/yomimono/waseda/seminar/2010/04/01/4048.php> を参照してください。数年前のものですが、ゼミの特徴や雰囲気をよくつかんで書かれています。

ゼミ学生によるゼミ紹介(特徴・雰囲気等) / Comment by Seminar student学生のプレゼンを中心に進むゼミです。授業は毎回、その日のトピックについて4年生の司会が概要をまとめ、3年生がテキストに沿って発表します。発表後は、学生の質問、そして先生からのコメントがあります。授業以外では、秋に3・4年生合同の合宿があります。映画を見たり、運動や課外活動を中心とした合宿です。また卒業式には、恒例となっている追いコンがあるなど、ゼミ生同志の仲が良いゼミだと思います。

ゼミ紹介(特徴、雰囲気等) / What Seminar is like, including the topic, atmosphere, etc. 1. The purpose of this seminar is to study the economies in East Asia including the Japanese economy. Specifically, students will study and discuss the current situation of those economies, their financial markets, their multinational firms, and Abenomics in Japan. In the first few classes of the fall semester, economic concepts and theories which are needed to study the listed topics will be reviewed. In addition, students will also learn how and where to obtain necessary data to understand East Asian economies and financial markets. 2. Since economic and financial issues are mainly discussed in the seminar, students who have never studied economics should not apply for this seminar. 3. We will have a zemi party after the first zemi class. In addition, we will have a zemi trip in October. Specific dates will be announced early September to those who join the zemi. All zemi members are strongly advised to join the two events. Out-classroom zemi activities (for example, parties for new members or graduating members, and meetings with OB/OG members) are regarded as important as in-classroom activities.

ゼミ学生によるゼミ紹介(特徴・雰囲気等) / Comment by Seminar student1.ゼミ全体の約1/3が韓国、中国、アメリカなどからの留学生が占めているとても国際色豊かなゼミであり、授業はすべて英語で行われます。非常に自由闊達な雰囲気で個々人の多様性を大事にしています。ゼミ生同士の仲がとても良く、歓迎会・送別会の他イベントも自分たちで自由に企画しています。2.歴代の先輩方の強い繋がりはもちろん、自由な風潮の裏にある個々人の就活に対する意識の高さと同期とのチームワークによって卒業後の進路という面で卓越した成果を残しています。15卒、16卒、17卒、18卒(予定)のゼミの進学先は以下の通りです。

1.Our seminar provides students with a diverse and open learning environment with approximately 1/3 of the students being from foreign countries including South Korea China and United States, while classes are held. ゼミ紹介(特徴、雰囲気等) / What Seminar is like, including the topic, atmosphere, etc. I have been away from SILS for my sabbatical leave, so there is no senior student at the moment. Students are expected to organize and participate in the field trip in a developing country. In the past, we have been to India, Indonesia, and Myanmar. For those who wish to be enrolled for this advanced seminar, please register for my economic development course offered at advanced level. Anyone interested in development issues in emerging markets and developing worlds are welcome to join the seminar. This seminar is academically rigorous but enjoyable.

The seminar strongly support and counsel students to develop their career plan, and many have joined the companies of their first choice. The alumni of this seminar are active in both academic and professional fields: some of which include the World Bank, UN, OECD, JBIC, JICA, trading companies (Mitsubishi, Mitsui, Marubeni, Itochu, etc.), IT companies (Google, Softbank, AU, NTT), finance (Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan), consulting firms (Abime, Boston Consulting), manufacturing companies (major automobile, home electronics); LSE, Oxford, Harvard, University of Illinois, Univ. of Tokyo, among others.

ゼミ紹介(特徴、雰囲気等) / What Seminar is like, including the topic, atmosphere, etc. This seminar is for students in their final semesters at the School of International Liberal Studies, especially students who have taken courses previously with Greg Dvorak. Further guidance about the seminar is listed in the syllabus, but basically this is a cultural studies course that uses feminism, ethnography, historiography, and Pacific Studies as possible methods for thinking about important topics in our world. Topics covered by Greg Dvorak in other courses (for example, militarism, war memory, indigenous histories, queer studies, Pacific Islands cultural studies, Japanese popular culture, etc.) will be addressed thematically, dependent on the interests of selected students. The instructor will provide a number of thematic and theoretical, enjoyable readings, films, and activities each semester but focus the seminar on the topics that interest students the most, in order to mentor them toward completion of a senior graduation thesis project. Students will do in-depth readings, research, and activities that matter deeply to them, and they will be required to lead seminar discussions. They will learn valuable skills in critical and creative thinking, cultural inquiry, gender studies, ethnographic field research, historical/archival research, writing, presenting/performance, and applying their knowledge in society. Based on the notion of coral as a connective, organic, migratory, diverse organism that forms massive reef communities, I structure this advanced seminar as a "reefing experience" where all of our diverse backgrounds, ideas, and topics come together to form a thriving, meaningful site of encounter. Together we will engage in various classroom and extra-curricular activities where appropriate. Additional seminar activities may also be planned together with students in order to make this a productive, exciting, meaningful and very enjoyable experience.

This seminar was, in fact, offered at another university before, and students often undertook a diverse variety of projects within the scope of cultural studies, ethnography, and history, often engaging in in-depth field projects. In future semesters, students will also be able to read theses written by their sempai as a way of getting more insight, too.)

ゼミ紹介(特徴、雰囲気等) / What Seminar is like, including the topic, atmosphere, etc. The seminars have a very informal style. The course design is focused on exposing students to research methodologies and to research approaches in Middle East studies. At the same time, students will read parts of some "classic" works in the field too. There will also be plenty of discussion around current events and other topics beyond those in the course outline. Reading and other preparation for the course is not too heavy, but students must come to class prepared, including having done any set reading or preparation.

ゼミ紹介(特徴、雰囲気等) / What Seminar is like, including the topic, atmosphere, etc. Students in this seminar will engage with media convergence and commercial entertainment. Those who are unfamiliar with this term might think of franchises such as Harry Potter, The Hunger Games, Pokemon, and The Matrix, and how they use both commercial and fan-produced media to create a large, "transmedia" experience. Historically, much of the experiences of these franchises revolved around merchandise and advertising masked in the skins of popular franchises, but today, these side texts are becoming more meaningful in the ways in which they relate to stories, worlds, and audience experiences. We will engage with various readings and audio-visual texts in order to better understand how media convergence functions in tandem. Basically, in this seminar, you learn how to read The Matrix. Students will learn to analyze the value of transmedia texts, while also becoming proficient in creating transmedia experiences of their own.

ゼミ紹介(特徴、雰囲気等) / What Seminar is like, including the topic, atmosphere, etc. 主なテーマ、宗教間対話、宗教思想と文化、異文化理解、人間理解、幸福と癒し、全人的教育、など。ひとりひとりが自分自身の関心、個性、問いかけを大事にしながら、研究、対話、交流 を通して共に探求し、参加者全員が作っていく創造的なゼミと言えます。学術的な議論だけではなく、それそれの生活や人生経験から感した事考えた事を率直に 話しわかちあう場にもなっていると思います。

多種多様な興味を持つゼミ生に共通するテーマがひとつあるとすれは、それは、異なった文化的、宗教的、社会的背景を持つ人たちが出会った時に、どのような問題が生し、どのような対話、共存、再創造の可能性があるかという事です。共通の問題意識を確認しながら、各自のテーマを皆で考え、積極的な意見交換を行っています。

一人一人のモチベーションと、思考と発見のプロセスを大事にし、自由で話しやすい環境を維持するために、少人数でアットホームな雰囲気を維持しています。

これまでに扱った資料としては、フロム『愛すること』、フランクル『夜と霧』、 アマルティア・セン『アイテンティティと暴力』、ハスカル『ハンセ』(部分)、キルケコール『死 にいたる病』、ドストエフスキー『罪と罰』、ブリクセン『バベットの晩餐』、映画『ガイアシンフォニー』などがあります。

希望者には、2013−14年度、16年度参加者からの「後輩へのメッセージ」をメールにて送ります。

ゼミ紹介(特徴、雰囲気等) / What Seminar is like, including the topic, atmosphere, etc. 授業の雰囲気:Our seminar is relatively small compared to other seminars, but this makes it easier to get to know each other, and gives more opportunities to speak your opinions in the class.We also sometimes go to the Korean town to have Korean food with our professor.

学習内容:The main focus of our seminar is to get a deep understanding of the contemporary Japan-Korea relationship through studying Korean history and literature. Professor Toshinori Hotei, who specializes in Korean literature, organizes this seminar. Beyond literature we also study Korean history, politics and many other subjects related to Korea in general. Movies are frequently used in class to visually understand historical events. All students are welcome regardless of their nationality, as long as they have a strong motivation to understand Japan-Korea issues. In fact, more than 30% of students were international students last semester. However, you are strongly recommended to have academic-level Japanese skills since we read a lot in Japanese. We sometimes even deal with articles written in old-style Japanese. Students sometimes research outside of class depending on their own interests, and they will have a presentation on their research at the end of each semester.This semester we will learn about the evolution of Japanese views towards Korea, starting from the period of Seikanron (征韓論), or the policy of conquering Korea by military force during the end of Edo period, all the way through the end of the colonial period. We will also watch the movie “Dear Pyongyang” and learn about the North Korean Repatriation Program (帰国問題).

ゼミ紹介(特徴、雰囲気等) / What Seminar is like, including the topic, atmosphere, etc.  私自身の研究分野は惑星科学ですが、過去の卒業生の進路(大学院、金融、エネルギー、医学部など)は多岐に渡るため、狭い範囲での卒論を要求しません。卒業生で医学部に進んだ生徒の卒論テーマは、血流のシミュレーションですし、エネルギー関係に進んだ生徒の卒論は、惑星形成のシミュレーションです。国際教養で天文学、物理学、化学を学べる唯一のゼミなので、このジャンルに興味のある学生は一緒に勉強しましょう。ここ数年、ゼミに所属せず卒業する学生も増加傾向にあるようですが、これまで出会った人の中には、社会人になってからマスターやPhDプログラムに進んでいる方も沢山いました。そのベースとして学部時代に卒論を経験することは非常に有益になるので、近い将来だけでなく遠い将来も見据えてゼミへ所属することは大切なことだと思います。

ゼミ学生によるゼミ紹介(特徴・雰囲気等) / Comment by Seminar student 自然科学には非常に多くのテーマがあり、多くの人にとって、なにか小難しいものという印象があります。 しかし、科学は非常に魅惑的で、面白いものです!時には少し難しい内容もあるかもしれません。もちろん理系分野についての知識があるに越した事はないですが、科学についての基礎から始めるので、文系の学生でもきちんと勉強すれは、十分に理解できる内容となっています。一学期目は力学の復習をして、簡単なシミュレーションを学びます。ほんの少しでも科学に対しての興味や、やる気があれは、是非私たちと一緒に勉強しましょう!私たちは各学期ごとに異なる教科書を使用して、皆で決めた分野についての勉強をしていきます。ちなみに今年は量子力学をやりました。国際教養学部の他のゼミとは一風変わった事について学ぶので、就職活動の際にも、ゼミについて聞かれる事が多いですよ! 卒業論文については、ゼミで学んでいく中で、一人ひとりが関心のある分野を決め、そのテーマについて勉強し、卒業論文を書きます。 卒業した先輩方は、SIer企業のシステムエンジニア、ソフトウェアエンジニア、ゲームプログラマー、金融機関、広告代理店やコンサルティングファーム、商社、大学院など、理系文系問わず様々な分野で活躍しています。  Science is a very broad subject and can be very demanding and overwhelming at times. However, science is also very fascinating! Rather than just studying from the books, we have the chance to think outside the box. Although some materials can be heavy, we approach matter and science from a liberal arts point of view. Knowledge about the subject beforehand may be helpful, but it is not entirely necessary! All you need is the interest and enthusiasm to learn science! We study by using a new textbook every semester and the subjects vary from programming, artificial intelligence, physics, math, astronomy and many more! Throughout the seminar we choose a specific topic that we are interested in regarding the field of matter and science. And upon graduating some of the member from this seminar course have chosen careers in Software Engineering, Video-Game programming, Financial company, Infrastructure, Graduate school for medical science, etc. Let’s enjoy learning science together!

In particular, you will study theory of banking and game theory such as(1) Freixas, Xavier, and Jean-Charles Rochet. Microeconomics of banking. MIT press, 2008, (2) van Benthem, Johan. Logic in games. MIT press, 2014.

Economic theory examines economic phenomena by rigorous logical ways such as mathematics. So you need to be patient to study it in the seminar. So, if you have never had any class of economics before, you need read basic textbooks of economics by yourself before the seminar.

ゼミ紹介(特徴、雰囲気等) / What Seminar is like, including the topic, atmosphere, etc. 英語や日本語に限らず様々な言語の音声、音の仕組み、音声習得、言語音声教育に関心がある人のためのゼミです。基礎の音声学、音韻論を中心に、発話、知覚、発音や第一・第二言語習得を中心に勉強します。音声以外の一般言語習得に興味のある人も歓迎します。実験や調査を通したテータ収集、分析を奨励していますが、文献調査による研究も可能です。様々な言語の研究を歓迎します。音声実験室を備えています。 This seminar is for students who are interested in the sound of language, speech, acquisition of sound, and sound education of various languages in the world. In this seminar we will study general phonetics and phonology, speech production and perception, language acquisition, and pronunciation. Students in the seminar conduct experimental studies, field work or literature survey based research for their graduation projects. If you are interested in speech and sound of language, you are welcome to apply. Our zemi is equipped with a phonetics laboratory.

ゼミ紹介(特徴、雰囲気等) / What Seminar is like, including the topic, atmosphere, etc. The seminar has two special features: 1) There is little direct content-based instruction by the professor in charge and instead the seminar is devoted to individual directed research projects chosen by each student member. Seminar presentations and individual consultations relating to the projects thus form the core of the seminar activities. The key is to choose a topic that you are truly curious and passionate about. 2) The seminar has traditionally divided roughly equally between the three sub-populations making up the SILS community: overseas students; returnee students; and junjapa students. Parties and other social activities to foster supportive relations within the seminar group are important, but trying to encourage and stimulate other members academically is also a key function of the seminar presentation sessions.

ゼミ紹介(特徴、雰囲気等) / What Seminar is like, including the topic, atmosphere, etc. If you are serious about improving your Spanish and broadening your knowledge about the Spanish-speaking world, this course may be suitable for you. This seminar is not just about how to improve your language skills in Spanish, but more importantly is about how to broaden your knowledge and connect it with other areas of studies, in order for you to become a well-rounded educated person. In this seminar, we explore many different themes related to the Spanish-speaking world, such as immigration, Japanese-Peruvian communities, border issues of Mexico and U.S., and Latin American history, culture, and literature in general. A typical class is that one or two students bring current topics that they are interested in and engage the class in discussions. We then have a discussion on different reading materials guided by me (the professor). There are reading assignments for each class. I normally give a lecture on discussion topics to give a background, but the majority of the seminar time is spent for a discussion. Students are expected to give presentations on a variety of themes and to participate in class discussions. The seminar is taught in Spanish and requires at least an intermediate level of Spanish (Prerequisite: Spanish V at SILS or its equivalent).

ゼミ紹介(特徴、雰囲気等) / What Seminar is like, including the topic, atmosphere, etc. In this seminar we will explore a wide range of cultural practices and expressive forms in modern Japan, ranging from music and film to literature, social criticism, and urban space. Although the historical focus will be on 1945 through the 1960s, students are free (pending instructor approval) to explore other historical periods and non-Japanese cultural contexts for their own research and graduation thesis. Since this is an advanced seminar focusing on Japanese culture, all students must be able to handle reading assignments in Japanese as well as in English. Class discussions will be primarily in English, but students may use Japanese when necessary. Also note that some of the cinematic materials to be discussed are only available in Japanese (without subtitles), so listening comprehension in both languages is also required. Students who wish to take this seminar should be prepared to attend class regularly, complete all assigned readings, actively participate in class discussions, and do their very best to produce a high-quality graduation thesis. Please note the following: 1) This is essentially a bilingual seminar (English/Japanese), and while discussions will be conducted primarily in English, all students should be prepared to handle readings and audiovisual materials as well as classroom discussions in both languages. Senior theses written for this seminar should be based on research conducted in both English and Japanese (although you are welcome to extend your research to other languages). 2) This seminar does not include Japanese-style "gasshuku"(合宿); after-class "nomikai" (飲み会) are limited to once or twice a semester. 3) The professor takes both the research and writing of senior theses seriously. Students are expected to work hard in order to produce a high-quality graduation thesis. Theses may be written in either English or Japanese. In this seminar, however, it is the academic quality of the thesis, rather than the language in which it is written, that counts most. 4) The professor has virtually no knowledge of, or special interest in, manga, anime, computer games, or otaku culture in general. Students interested in these facets of Japanese culture (which are, obviously, significant) should choose a different seminar. 5) Cell phones and smart phones are to be turned completely off (not merely on silent mode) and kept out of site during class.

ゼミ紹介(特徴、雰囲気等) / What Seminar is like, including the topic, atmosphere, etc. 森川ゼミでは、日本のガヴァナンス全般について研究します。日本政治、経済、社会の動きを通して、ゼミ生の人生を考える授業でもあります。一度しか無い人生をどうとらえ、どう生きてゆくのか…、日本あるいは母国の指導者になるべく使命を持つゼミ生はどのように国のあるべき姿、世界のあるべき姿、さらには自分自身の人生を考えるべきか等について考えてもらいます。そのためには、日本政治や経済への基礎知識をはしめ、ゼミ生自身のマナー・言葉使いに至るまで、幅広く習得していただくことになります。お互いの関係は一生続くという前提で教えています。授業ではしつけが厳しいです。しかしみなさんの人生を変える最大のチャンスだと感しることができるはずです。

This course examines the role and impact of advertising in society. In this class we will consider the economic, legal & regulatory, ethical, and social issues that surround advertising. The class operates as a seminar, and active participation is mandatory.

ゼミ紹介(特徴、雰囲気等) / What Seminar is like, including the topic, atmosphere, etc. In this seminar, students are exploring ways in which linguistic theory and knowledge can be applied to actual situations. One important focus is second language learning and teaching, but we also welcome students interested in other applications, such as translation or language policy, as well as students interested in the use of computer corpora for linguistic research, and students interested in semantics and pragmatics. Many of the students in this zemi have experience teaching a language (either as a volunteer or in a paid position) and of course, everyone has experience learning foreign languages. We make use of this experience in class discussion and presentations. The seminar is conducted in English, but it is open to students interested in linguistic theory or applications of linguistics to ANY language. This zemi is multi-lingual! All students in the zemi are expected to write a graduation thesis in English. Here are just a few of the topics from past years: the use of English in Japanese advertising; attempts to revive the Ainu language; attitudes toward the use of Taiwanese dialect in the media in Taiwan; bilingual education in international schools in Japan; computer-mediated communication and English education; English loanwords in Japanese, and how to teach them; Japanese language education for refugees in Japan; politeness in English and Japanese foreign language textbooks; a functional analysis of code-switching among SILS students; translation of children’s picture books from English to Japanese: translation of Korean literature into English; the Englishization of Rakuten. After graduation, some students of this seminar have at first gone to work in companies, such as banks, trading companies, hotels, software companies, and as staff of Waseda University. Some students have become language teachers at the junior high, high school or university level, teaching English, Japanese, or other languages. Some graduates have gone on to graduate study (in Japan, the US, and the UK) in areas including linguistics, applied linguistics, anthropology, and accounting. Finally, after graduate study or working at their first job for a few years, some students have applied their language abilities to jobs in translation and editing, study abroad, or working for government and cultural agencies.

ゼミ学生によるゼミ紹介(特徴・雰囲気等) / Comment by Seminar studentComment from an SP1 student: Vickyゼミは言語学について幅広く学ぶことのできるゼミです。 ゼミではプレゼンテーションをする機会が多くあり、先生を含めたクラス全体のティスカッションが活発に行われます。卒業論文に向けて本格的に準備を始めるのは4年生に入ってからなので、まだ卒業論文で何について書きたいか分からない人も心配いりません。Vickyは優しい、猫好きの先生で、いつでも卒業論文などの相談にのってくれます。また、Vickyの家でのホームハーティーなど、ゼミの時間外にゼミ生同士の親睦を深める機会も多数あります。今年はゼミ旅行として夏休みにマレーシアへ行く予定です。 Comment from an SP2 student: Vicky zemi is a very heart warming zemi. In this zemi we study Linguistics. For our graduation thesis we first deepen our understanding toward Linguistics in the first semester by doing presentations and discussions. We start thinking about some possible graduation thesis topics. In the second semester we get an overall picture of topic we would like to write about and get ready to start writing the graduation thesis. In the third semester we write, complete and submit the graduation thesis. This may sound like a hard process. However, Vicky would give you advice for your graduation thesis, so there are no worries. Aside from academic writing we do for this zemi, we have several events throughout the year. Each semester we have at least one party and sometimes we go to Vicky’s house to have a home party. This year during the summer break we will be going to Malaysia. I highly recommend you to become a member of Vicky zemi if you choose to write your thesis on Linguistics.

ゼミ紹介(特徴、雰囲気等) / What Seminar is like, including the topic, atmosphere, etc.  学生生活最後の3学期間を、自分の選択した歴史に関するテーマに没頭し、その成果を卒論として完成させることを目的とするゼミです。学生の関心は多様で、かつての卒論のテーマの一部を記すと、日本史の領域では、戦国時代の国家統一の問題、江戸期の警察機構、日本最初の女子帰国生、日本のインクルーシブ教育史、化粧品を巡る文化史、沖縄と米軍の問題、沖縄独立運動史など。比較史として日英の移民受け入れに関する比較研究、日中韓の歴史教科書の比較。また国際関係史としては、日本のアメリカ移民史、戦間期の日米関係、戦中期の日本と東南アジア、戦後の日朝関係、ウクライナ・ロシア関係論。またの美術史領域では、日本の文化財保護、ルネサンス期のイタリア絵画。外国史の領域としては、トルコの社会史、スペインの文化・宗教史、ベネツィアの歴史, エルサレムの歴史、チリ現代史、チモール独立運動史、などであった。  ただ、教員の専門との関係から、日本の歴史や国際関係史に関するテーマの学生が多く、基本的には日本語によるセミナーとなっている。しかしSP2, SP4の学生も参加しており、必要に応して、英語に切り替わることもある。  教室外では、早稲田大学セミナーハウスへのフィールドトリップや、ゼミ修了後の食事会なども一学期に数度の割合で開かれている。今年も、合宿を検討している。 For SP2 and SP4 students, If you prefer to conduct research and writing in English on the subject of Japanese history, I will organize special tutoring/seminar sessions in English. ゼミ学生によるゼミ紹介(特徴・雰囲気等) / Comment by Seminar student大和田ゼミでは文化・表現を主なテーマとして取り扱っています。これまで博物館や美術館を訪れ、日本をはしめとした様々な文化に直接触れてきました。フィールドワークを基軸としたアクティブな活動ができ、学生の積極性が促されます。卒業研究も文化・表現という広い枠組みの中から各々興味のある分野を選択して挑戦することができます。  ゼミの雰囲気は和やかでありながらも自由度がかなり高いと言えます。そのためか、卒業したゼミ生は外資系をはしめとして国内・外資証券会社・銀行、総合商社、食品関連企業、新聞社、公務員、TV局等と幅広い分野で活躍しています。  ゼミ選択に迷っている方がいましたらぜひ一度様子を見にいらしてください。 This advanced seminar is a seminar which is led by Professor Owada Eiko, an expert in the field of American literature. In this seminar we have so far done a museum visit and made presentations. Through this seminar we have learnt the depth of Japanese culture. This seminar has a very friendly atmosphere which anyone can become part of. ゼミ紹介(特徴、雰囲気等) / What Seminar is like, including the topic, atmosphere, etc. Zemi Introduction & Selection This advanced seminar series, under the general rubric of ‘Creative Industries’, has the following three semester sub-themes, in this order: Cultural Industries, Selling Sensibility, and Creative by Design. The rationale for the seminar themes, and much detail of what we do, can be found at www.pokazemi.wordpress.com. The full range of topics in weekly detail are shown for the full three semesters, as are assessment items and their weighting. There are also a range of materials on the website that we have been using recently in class so it will give you some further feel for what we do. Prior to applying, students are encouraged to have a look at the first text (or reviews of it) which is Richard Caves’ Creative Industries (2000, Harvard University Press) and perhaps Creative Confidence by David & Tom Kelley, which is one of the key resources for the third and final semester. Caves’ book is a profoundly rich source of insights into the cultural industries but also requires effort on the part of readers. It provides an analytical foundation for the seminar series as a whole.

How the seminar is run The seminar may involve several short excursions each semester, generally within Tokyo to cultural institutions and design precincts but to date I have not had any seminar camps (‘gasshuku’) and currently do not plan to do so. Any such initiative would be with the collective consent of seminar members. I do not hold seminar drinking parties (‘nomikai’). Students are, of course, welcome to socialise amongst themselves as they see fit but participation is never an expectation of membership of the seminar. All organised activities are academic in nature and which I take responsibility for. Consequently there is no student seminar coordinator (‘zemi - cho’). Please note the graduation thesis must relate in some way to the key themes of the seminar and be written in English but the latter should not discourage students who are raised in Japan.

The theory part will explore theories from social sciences and humanistic subjects and the application part will focus on how these theories can be applied to the historical and contemporary issues in Asia. Students in the class wrote research project reports that were eventually used in their job search as well as various levels of career building stages. The general atmosphere is very relaxed, and the instructor provides individualized guidance to all students to complete graduation thesis writing in time. The seminar puts an emphasis on writing. This culture seminar won a thesis competition in 2013, and three student research projects from the class of 2013 zemi were selected to attend a renowned international conference. Also, the class of 2010 and 2012 participated in academic conferences held at Yonsei University located in Korea. ゼミ紹介(特徴、雰囲気等) / What Seminar is like, including the topic, atmosphere, etc. 教育またはコミュニケーションに関するテーマで卒業研究を行ないます。  3年次では、質的研究方法を学びます。2人から4人のグループで質的な研究プロジェクトを一つ完成させ、学年の終わりに行なわれるゼミ合宿で発表します。4年次では、個別に卒業研究を進めます。春学期に文献を読み、研究目的と研究方法を定めます。夏休みにテータを収集し、秋学期にテータを分析して卒業論文を書き上げます。ゼミは、ティスカッションが中心で、毎週、読む、あるいは書く課題が出されます。  これまでに先輩たちが取り組んだテーマには、次のようなものがありました。(卒業論文の題名とは一部異なります。)「純ジャハSILS生はどのようにSILSで成長していくか」、「自己教育とは―プロフェッショナル6人に聞く―」、「盲導犬の教育に携わる人の意識」、「人が絵画を鑑賞するとき、商業的価値を示す文字情報に影響されるか」、「日本人が同一の事物を異なる語句で言い表わす意識(「りんごジュース」と「アップルジュース」など)」、「大学生が使用する悪態語〈バカ〉にはどのような意味があるか」など。  学問をしたいと思っている、真摯な学生さんを求めます。

ゼミ紹介(特徴、雰囲気等) / What Seminar is like, including the topic, atmosphere, etc. The seminar focuses on the art and skill of interpreting between English and Japanese. We focus on the actual practice of interpreting, using real (recorded) speeches made to live audiences as primary texts. We will interpret speeches on varieties of topics including but not limited to international relations, politics, economics and culture. The seminar presupposes fluency in both languages, and thus the students must be comfortable and confident in speaking both English and Japanese fluently. The first few months will be used to train students in the basic core skills required for interpreting. We will then move on to actual interpreting, first with easier topics and then with more sophisticated topics. The classes will be conducted in a friendly but professional manner, so the students need to come prepared, be alert in class to provide constructive comments to peers, and be interested in a variety of topics.

This course is NOT a language acquisition course. Fluency in the two languages (English and Japanese) is a requirement for this seminar.

"A small, cosy seminar that allows for plenty of in-depth discussion. The biggest plus of joining a smaller seminar like this is definitely the opportunity it gives you to practice and try out the different techniques you're learning. In the case of interpretation studies this is probably even more important, since it's a skill you build through practical experience. Another great thing about this seminar is the relaxed feel it has; no one minds stopping to discuss questions, or just talk in general about the issues you come across during the work in class. All in all, it's a great seminar for those looking to improve their interpretation or translation skills in a familiar, relaxed setting!"

ゼミ紹介(特徴、雰囲気等) / What Seminar is like, including the topic, atmosphere, etc. This course is aimed to orient students in Russian language research on topics of Russia’s social and economic development and assist students majoring in Russian Studies to master their proficiency in Russian language as applied to socio-economic disciplines. The course is developed to guide students through the process of interdisciplinary research on political economy of Russia (or a transition economy of choice). The course emphasises the importance of institutional design for economic development. Particular focus is set on the concepts of New Institutional Economics (NIE) and New Comparative Economics (NCE). This course is designed to acquaint students with contemporary Russian language research on the topics of socio-economic development. Expected Learning Outcomes include students’ ability to: understand modern academic Russian language used in socio-economic disciplines; write research notes/ summaries/ literature reviews in Russian language; and deliver academic presentations in Russian language on the themes of their specialisation.

ゼミ紹介(特徴、雰囲気等) / What Seminar is like, including the topic, atmosphere, etc. International Political Economy (IPE) is a sub-field of international relations. Students who attend this seminar are normally interested in the politico-economic dynamics of international trade, global finance, foreign investment, or regional cooperation. Basic knowledge of international relations, comparative politics, and international economics is preferred. So, if you have taken classes such as Introduction to International Relations and/or International Political Economy, you may find it easier to participate in class discussion and prepare your graduation thesis. In the class, we read classic works in IPE and discuss the research projects of individual participants. After class, we enjoy social lives at Nomikai and exchange information on job-hunting. Joint seminars are sometimes held with other advanced seminar students at Waseda and beyond.

ゼミ紹介(特徴、雰囲気等) / What Seminar is like, including the topic, atmosphere, etc. For fall 2017 semester, I will accept students who only have to take two semesters (Fall 2017 and Spring 2018) AND have applied to graduate in 3.5 yewars. In the first semester, students will be introduced to various archival and online sources. They also will develop a research plan for their thesis and begin research/writing. In the second semester, students will complete the writing of their graduation thesis and present their findings. Graduates from this semester have gone on to graduate school or work in the communications, retail, cosmetics, beauty, fashion, information technology, transportation, and manufacturing industries. Note: Students of this seminar are required to have completed the “History of American Advertising.” Some background in related fields of advertising, marketing, consumer culture, and media studies is highly recommended. This course is reading and research intensive.
