The Iridium System

With 66 Low Earth Orbit satellites, Iridium is the world's largest commercial satellite constellation.

The system, owned by the Iridium Communication Inc. Company (McLean, VA, United States), is a satellite-based, wireless communication network providing a robust suite of data services to virtually any destination anywhere on earth. It comprises three principal components: the satellite network, the ground network and the Iridium subscriber products including platforms fitted with Iridium modems.

The design of the Iridium network allows data calls to be relayed from one satellite to another until they reach the satellite above the Iridium Subscriber Unit and the signal is relayed back to Earth. The Iridium network offers a pole-to-pole global coverage.

CLS offers 3 main Iridium services for data communication: SBD, RUDICS, and CSD.

Overview of Iridium Data Services at CLS

SBD Iridium Short Burst Data (SBD) Service is an efficient network protocol designed for shorter sized data messages. SBD uses a proprietary network protocol to transfer data messages to and from the remote terminal. It is possible to send Mobile Originated (MO-SBD) and Mobile Terminated (MT-SBD) messages. Designed to send shorter sized data messages Average transmission power: 1W Max. MO message size: 1.96 Kbytes Max. MT message size: 1.89 Kbytes Messages are delivered with a raw Iridium Doppler location

(best accuracy: 1km - 80% within 10 km) Data are received by email in attached file Up to 5 different recipients email addresses Service is billed according to volume of data exchanged

RUDICS The Iridium Router-based Unrestricted Digital Interworking Connectivity Solution (RUDICS) is an enhanced gateway termination/origination capability for circuit-switched data calls across the Iridium satellite network. RUDICS is a data service designed to be incorporated into an integrated data solution such as remote asset monitoring, control and data file transfer.

RUDICS is typically best suited for applications that deploy a large number of units which report to a central host application. Some Iridium RUDICS applications switch automatically on CSD protocol when the RUDICS service is not accessible.

Bi-directional continuous communication (dial-up) Average transmission power: 4W Real data rate: 6 to 10 Kbytes / min Data are transferred by a phone call between an Iridium

modem (9522B or 9523) to another, then relayed to the host RUDICS server through the Internet (TCP/IP)

Service is billed according to the call duration Requires a SIM card (to be activated)

CSD The Circuit Switched Data (CSD) Service supports the transfer of relatively large data volumes (tens of kilobytes) using the Iridium dial-up capability. The Iridium Data Module (IDM) places a call to the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) or to another IDM then exchanges the data through that open circuit at approximately 2400 bits per second. CSD is best suited for the transmission of large data sets, for applications with a small number of deployed platforms. The service is billed according to call duration which is in direct proportion to the volume of data being transferred. This service is bi-directional. Bi-directional continuous communication (dial-up) Average transmission power: 4W Real data rate: 6 to 10 Kbytes / min Data are transferred by a phone call between an Iridium

modem (9522B or 9523) to another modem, relayed through the PSTN

Service is billed according to the call duration Requires a SIM card (to be activated)

PILOT Iridium Pilot is a global broadband maritime communication solution.

It provides broadband Internet data, up to 134 Kbps, and high-quality voice (up to 3 simultaneous phone calls), in one low-cost platform.

The Iridium Pilot is the successor to the popular maritime Iridium OpenPort terminal. It is designed to operate in extreme sunlight, frigid weather, high winds and rolling seas. Because the Iridium PILOT broadband service is not affected by extreme weather, many customers with mission-critical communication requirements rely on it to back up other platforms.

As a packet switched service, the Iridium PILOT Service substantially reduces communication costs compared to circuit switched services. And it offers a wide range of customizable voice and data plans allowing you to choose to suit your needs and your budget.

Iridium Pilot service relies on the specifically designed Iridium Pilot Kit (cf. kit details in the next section).

NEW! IRIDIUM VOICE & SMS CLS offers Iridium Voice & SMS services, designed to meet the needs of customers using Iridium satellite phones.

A pay-as-you-go offer (see CLS Iridium price list for more details) with the convenience of Iridium’s reliable, everywhere voice and data communication without the need to be concerned about a prepaid account expiring or having a low balance. Bi-directional continuous communication (dial-up) Works with all Iridium satellite phones SMS & Voice Service is billed according to the call duration / per SMS Requires a SIM card (provided by CLS) Global: pole-to-pole coverage on the Iridium satellite network

UPGRADED! RUDICS HOSTING SERVICE FOR ARGO PROFILING FLOATS CLS offers a specific hosting service for ARGO floats that use iridium RUDICS: a dedicated CLS account that allows all users to easily and securely manage their communication with their ARGO floats. Downloading data files and uploading mission files is easily carried out via FTP (or SFTP). CLS hosting is based on servers that are operational and monitored 24/7, with an active redundancy/backup across 2 separate processing centers to ensure a maximal efficiency and data safety. The key advantages of the hosting solution are:

No need to open a RUDICS account (saves 2200 EUR) 100% compatible with all float type No need to maintain a connected server 24/7 (backup, software & hardware upgrades, internet connection, etc.) No need to develop a communication interface to manage data communication Auto-archiving of all data files (up to one month after the end of contract) Maximum safety : server monitored and backed-up 24/7; 4 independent internet providers at CLS Quick activation of the service (vs. up to 2 weeks to register a RUDICS account) CSD / PSTN line for backup data calls Easy access to data through FTP / SFTP accounts CLS excellence in Customer support Detailed user’s guide provided

This solution was developed thanks to CLS’ strong experience with Iridium RUDICS communication and satellite systems, and thanks to our long-lasting collaboration with the ARGO scientific community and main floats manufacturers.
